11 Bars Where You Can Drink Malort in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"For a while Malort was probably the best bet at this literary-influenced bar, but a change in management and new additions to the team have yielded a new cocktail menu that will make the visit worthwhile. No worries though; it seems it hasn’t shaken the days of yore just yet. Kitchen manager Daniel Warsaw has been experimenting with an in-house Malort hot sauce to go with his delicious bar grub, and for the nippy weather, bartender Waites Laseter likes to “spike Hot Toddies with Malort to give it some attitude.”" - Paula Echevarria

I rarely would give any place a 5 star unless they undoubtedly EARN IT. Backspace bar and kitchen was exactly my vibe. Quite, great beer selection and some really good eats from the kitchen the bar tender meatball was really nice and seemed pretty board. The food was tasty and the atmosphere was great. This is the golden age of small bars online Nola.

This was the first place we stopped into when we got to NOLA and I'm so happy that we did. There are a lot of different beers to try and I recommend trying the Who Dat by Urban South. It's a local beer that I wish I could get back home. I was shocked at how good the pulled pork fries were. This much flavor in the food from a bar is not something I'm used to back home. The price for everything shocked me the most. You couldn't get that anywhere for so cheap. The bartender was so friendly. He gave a list of places to try out while we were here. We'll definitely be back here the next time we're down!

Google
absolutely delicious. if youre around and you are wanting something affordable yet delicious, this is definitely the place to go. We got the burgers, fries, brussel sprouts, and the fried pickles. All absolutely amazing and i am not at all a fan of brussel sprouts, but after this, i might have to make an experiment.

Google
Had two Bloody Marys and the BLT. Fries were well seasoned and crispy. Everything was delicious. Had the Laybrinth and Swamp people playing on the T.V. 's with no sound. Great playlist of music playing overhead. Relaxed ambiance made it an enjoyable evening in the Big Easy.

In from Galveston TX. This place has history as it was Evelyn'S BAR UNTIL 2012. Google it and you will see. Tyler took great care of us

Doug Tilman

Google
A place off the beaten path where locals go after work. Reasonable prices. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Always visit every time I am in NOLA.

Google
Great little traditional bar away from the carnage on bourbon street. Sell shots, cocktails and cans of beer. Lovely staff and great sounds. Went for drinks, so can't comment on food.

Google
We stayed a couple doors down from Backspace and found ourselves there all three days/nights of our stay. The drinks and food are extremely affordable and the bartenders were great company. Everyone treated us like we were regulars and we had the best time.

Yelp
I was so happy to see that this bar survived the pandemic. I've always loved it's quasi hunting lodge feel and incredible drinks. It's definitely not on one of the busier streets and it's closer to Canal than Esplanade so it's easy to slide in and get a seat at the bar. I love their Blue Hawaiian and Espresso Martinis. We also had some pulled pork loaded fries which were a nice twist on Poutine. The bartender was super friendly and quick with the drinks. I kid you not when I say a burger is $11! I live in Milwaukee, where you're lucky to find a burger under $15 these days.

Yelp
We were looking for a beer and a burger....this place was perfect. Dark pub feel, with a great and affordable beer menu. The food was spot on. I had a bacon cheeseburger and fries. Hangover helper for sure!!

Yelp
Small place with table seating and bar seating. We popped in around 4:30 on a Friday and there was a decent crowd. Seemed like it was just the one bartender working. All orders are placed at the bar. Got the fried pickles and a spicy chicken sandwich. Food did take a little bit to come out, which was surprising as most people there were just drinking (not eating). The fried pickles were great, perfect amount of batter and not 5000 degrees when they came out. The chicken sandwich was also good, I just wish it had a smidge more sauce to it. It was not very spicy either - which was nice. Overall, food was good. Prices were decent for French quarter. Service was fine. I would say don't come in here expecting to be blown away by the frills. It's a bar.

Yelp
Food was absolutely horrific! Ordered fried pickles, honey chicken sandwich with fries, and hubby ordered chicken club with brussel sprouts. Sandwiches came out and my husband got the same thing as me. He decided to just eat it instead of sending it back and waiting for another sandwich. There were only 2 other people in there, but yet it took a good 20 minutes to actually get our food. At first they looked really good until we cut them in half. It seriously looked like dark meat, but the guy insisted it was a breast. If it really was, then that chicken is bad. It was gray! Pickles and fries tasted like they were pulled out of month old oil. The only thing that was good was the brussel sprouts.

Yelp
Such a cool little nook and just close enough to our hotel but also just outside the hub of tourist traps. The atmosphere is dark and pubby, cozy, and different. The burger was one of the best I've had in town, and their Brussels sprouts were a great burger side dish. I try to avoid the Quarter when in town, but when I'm ever staying close by there again I will definitely be back for another burger and quiet spot to chill.

Yelp
We had a lovely lunch here. It's a dive bar feel with a really solid burger and fries! The burger has a wad of brie and it's just amazing. The food came out quickly and the bartender chatted my husband up about the music scene and it was a nice spot to be during a quiet rainy Monday after the aquarium. I recommend splitting the fries and getting the burger!
google avatar

Yelp
Went here after we got to House of Blues and found out it was closed for maintenance, and we loved it! Cheapest bottled beers in town, $3. Our tab was $27 total; a beer, cocktail, and an app, including 20% tip. Service was quick and vibes were good! Would def recommend to stop in for a meal and a drink.

Yelp
The backspace burger is hands down one of the best burgers in the city. It's seriously delicious. We also had the popcorn chicken. These are cutlets that are breaded, cut and then fried. Not a dry (previous frozen) nugget, it was so good. The spicy honey dipping sauce was too. Friendly bar staff. I recommend skipping the specialty drinks and going with classics. Really great experience, will definitely go back.

Yelp
This is a really cool little "dive bar" just off Canal. It has a relaxed, upscale dive bar feel. The bartenders don't like to make a lot of fancy drinks, but what they do make is delicious. They're funny and the clientele is laid-back, chill and friendly. If you're trying to get out of the craziness of the French Quarter, this is the perfect place to stop for a quiet, tasty drink.

Yelp
Decent bar space with good eats and solid margaritas. We ordered the fried pickles, chicken bites and jalapeño poppers and they came out super fast. The bartender was super sweet and the chef brought the food out himself. The only minus here was the lack of lighting particularly in the back corner and the absence of soap in both bathrooms. Overall, it's a solid bar with a cool vintage ambiance and some nice menu selections.

Yelp
This is a dive bar that I would absolutely be a regular of, were I local. Cheap beer, cheap food, and a roadhouse atmosphere. Is this a NOLA destination? Probably not. Backspace doesn't have the typical Cajun menu. But when you've had your full of crawfish, grits, and gumbo and just kind of want a hamburger and fries and wash it down with a basic beer, this is your jam. Heavy woods, broken in seating, and loud music played at a medium volume is the feel. The bartender isn't your friend, but he's here to get what you need. I like it.
google avatar

Guy K.

Yelp
In A Nutshell: -Backspace is a bar along Chartres Street in NOLA. -Situated w/ a couple of other bars next door, you can bar hop into this place if you are looking for more creative drinks like the sazerac. -The Sazerac is the official cocktail of New Orleans. -I tried it here & it was good, one is enough. Overall, this was a nice bar to escape the humid heat & to enjoy the Sazerac.

Yelp
Nice dive bar. You order at the bar and take a seat where you like.Ordered the pulled pork nachos and the burgers. The nachos were good not great. The burgers are a complete other story. They were great highly recommend.

Yelp
Chill spot. Very neighborhood feel. Didn't get food, but bar bites looked good. Had the maple old fashioned, which was a little heavy on the maple but otherwise was great.
google avatar

Wasabi PomMami ..

Yelp
Sick ambience. The bar is decorated perfectly and it definitely sets the tone for a legit bar in NOLA

Yelp
This will sneak up on you if you're not paying attention. Right around from the Marriott New Orleans. Is this gem of a place! I was greeted by a nice gentleman at the door + pulled in by the great service of the bartender, Hallie! She was one of the best bartenders I have had the pleasure of meeting! She was patient with me and my co-workers as we decided what we wanted to drink. Her personality and accommodating nature and great musical taste kept us there ordering drinks that all tasted delicious. Miss Dominique in the back. Cooked up some of the best bar food I have ever had. The place is real cozy and allows for real intimate but also comfortable interactions!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little bar just a block away from the madness of Bourbon Street. Bar seating, table seating, or comfy leather chairs by the fire! Order at the bar then sit. Great little side salad. Deliciously crisp and flavorful fried pickles. And Literary Giants and typewriters decorate the bar!!! Friendly bartenders that make strong drinks!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Like many if the reviews, I ordered the signature Backspace Burger. I was not disappointed. One of the reviews I read was 3 months prior to my visit, and the prices increased in that short time. Don't accept prices in reviews to be today's prices. The place was rather dark with very little air circulation.

Yelp
Dive bar to the max. Ok food. Dive bar attitude from bartender. Empty on Sunday night but close to Marriott hotel.
google avatar

Grace R.

Yelp
Tina the bartender was extremely nice and made me an excellent expresso Martini and for my husband a very good Moscow Mule. The food was delicious, we had shared a fried chicken sandwich and shoe string French fries . The bar was full when we got there, but after the football game was over most people left. Tina said that around 9pm it will be full with a new crowd. I will be back again when I come back to New Orleans.

Yelp
The food here is fresh and tasty. Their burgers are well made and flavorful and the boudin balls are one of the best i've had. Service can be slow and you will need to order from the bar if you grab a table. They have a decent selection of beer and our bartender made a great Old Fashioned.

Yelp
This is a perfectly lit bar with thoughtfully curated music, pleasant and competent staff, and surprisingly good bar food. If it's your first visit and you just want to dip your toes, you can't go wrong with the Backspace Burger ($13) and fries (+$3) washed down with a $2 Miller High Life (or PBR or Rolling Rock) or two. In this case, "perfectly lit" to me means dim but not too dim, with a wall of windows facing the shaded street that gives you that 100+ year old West Village NYC feel inside. It's just a great space and vibe with old-world tavern lighting design that isn't dominated by the trendy and harsh exposed filament bulb fixtures that have become an epidemic across indoor civilization. Their graceful wooden bar stools are beautiful and unique. I don't live in New Orleans, but as soon as I walked in here I felt like a local. Looking forward to coming back on the next trip down!

Yelp
THE BEST BURGER IN NOLA! As well as great drink deals outside of the craziness of Bourbon Street. Really cool, clean bar on a smaller and less crowded street in New Orleans. I have no cons for this review other than you may have issues parking (but that is ALL of the city). Amazing reasons to go here: - Incredibly friendly staff: they will hook you up with a smile - Awesome drink deals. We're talking $4 happy hour liquor. Good luck finding that on Bourbon Street - Insanely delicious food. Highly recommend not only the burger but the loaded fries of the day. HAND CUT - Laid back crowd - Super clean bathrooms and bar space - Excellent drink selection I honestly would love to keep this place a secret but I also want it to get lots of your business. Must stop here if you are looking to get off Bourbon Street for a much better drink and to be around some cool people!

Johnny B.

Yelp
Momma always said, some of the suckiest food in NOLA can be eaten on Canal Street. This place: BINGO! "Best burger in the Quarter?" Who wrote that? The wasted guy out front holding an almost empty SoCo bottle? My "Classic" with cheese was tasteless, bottom-grade "meat." Had no weight to it, not a hint of juice and the bun was like something out of ca. 1975 lunchroom bread. Terrible. The shoestring fries were lame, too. I won't bother commenting on the service - because there was none. Oh yeah! I had to fumigate my table myself. Boo!

Marina H.

Yelp
The BEST burger we could have had on our first night in nola. The food here is no joke. Service was quick and friendly. Nice chill ambiance. We plan on coming back again before heading home. definitely stop by Backspace

David L.

Yelp
Fantastic little place with phenomenal food and a great atmosphere. The bartenders Hallie and Jain are the best in the business. And they both have great playlists for your listening pleasure. Definitely our new favorite place in NOLA versus all the chaos of Bourbon Street.

Mark W.

Yelp
What can I say... it is a dive bar. Cool environment, great staff and we all enjoyed our meals. I myself was looking for a great burger, and they did not disappoint. Would highly recommend.
google avatar

Jaap B.

Yelp
Well, that was a big disappointment. Sorry, they ought to list the kitchen closes at 7pm. Or, do they open at 7??? Regardless, didn't get any help from the bartender. He simply didn't take our order. Paid for our beers and walked out. Place has an okay ambiance.
google avatar

Tyler G.

Yelp
Just a really chill and affordable place. We loved our food--Backspace Burger and Popcorn Chicken. The menu doesn't say anything about the Broccoli Bites having cheese, but they do, just FYI. If I were still a drinker, I'd be here every day of my trip for the $2 PBR. I enjoyed my soda with cranberry and a lime and B enjoyed her favorite, the Mango Cart. Very cool spot.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
2.5 stars is probably more appropriate but at least these folks are honest. And I made it in time to snag the last of the Pimms for my Pimms Cup on a random Sunday night. The interiors were giving man cave/smoking room. The bartender was friendly enough but a bit harried. Still he greeted us and said goodbye when we left. A nice stopover on the way to wherever you're going next.
google avatar

Akeita M.

Yelp
We love this hidden gem! The fireplace set the atmosphere. It's a chilly weekend. Jake made us wonderful drinks. The staff and patrons were awesome.

Wendy P.

Yelp
The ambiance was rich in local flavor. The food was good and not too expensive. Typical neighborhood bar food.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Gone to a lot of New Orleans bars, music venues and restaurants - never felt more uncomfortable or more likely to be scammed than at the backspace. It felt like they were trying to get me to forget my credit card while we were there. It was more than weird. They clearly target tourists. Only go here if you want to be part of a credit card scheme.
google avatar

Jeremy N.

Yelp
Came here to have dinner. Yes, I know it's a bar. Sat down at the bar. Looked at the menu and was immediately told they were out of almost all the sides. Wanted to have a burger and fries and they were out. Every other side we called out was also out. We left and went to another location on bourbon street. Not sure how the food would have been. We didn't go back because we didn't want to experience the same thing. The burgers and food look good on yelp...just not sure how it tastes as they were out of most items. Disappointed about that. If I came back, I might give it a try. Because the reviews were good. Only reason for the reduction in the stars. The staff was friendly so there is that!
google avatar

Yelp
Took a night off from Cajun-Creole food and went to a dive bar near our hotel. A great hole-in-the-wall bar that you walk up and order at the bar and then find a seat (which there are not many available to start with.). When ordering, we were told they were out of Fish & Chips and the Pulled Pork Sandwich. I ordered an 100% Wagyu Beef Burger w/smoked bacon, grilled onions & brie cheese. Then a side of Loaded Fries w/cheese, rum braised pulled pork, spicy jalapeños & spicy aioli. What I got was a well done burger with very little bacon and no Brie. Even overcooked and missing/light on a few items the burger was pretty damn good still. My Loaded Fries were supposed to come with melted cheddar, and yet it arrived with more of a cheese sauce which was really good as well.

matt p.

Yelp
Man. The burger sounds good. Too bad the bartender insisted on leaving door open on one of NOLA's rare days when it was 30 degrees outside( not exaggerating, I checked, it's 30 degrees outside as I write this in The Chart Room). Not going to sit in that. Not going to order food that will get cold quick due to the open door draft. So, congratulations, people know you're open. Your door is open. You lost us.

Genevieve S.

Yelp
Loved my jalapeño burger & salad! I ordered honey mustard dressing & chef came out & said she didn't have that & whipped me up something amazing! Yummy place in the Quarter w/out the insanity of drunk customers.

Lindsey B.

Yelp
Great little place. Cozy fire, phenomenal staff, five-star loaded fries. It's small but the staff and atmosphere are a nice break from Bourbon Street shenanigans.
google avatar

Yelp
Talk about a neighborhood anchor, thank gawd for places like backspace bar & kitchen. The kitchen is open until 5am, every damn day! You may be unimpressed by this, but when you are in Nawlins, this is good information to know. Tried and true is what it is all about and this place has it in spades. It actually reminded me a lot of the brown bars I used to frequent in Holland. They are not just slinging your typical bar food until 5am, this is nawlins after all, folks expect more. We had rolled into town from Chicago and did a ghost tour, so after all day in the car and all night of walking the streets, we were ready for a bev and bite. It was also turkey eve, so places had started rolling up as we were headed back to our hotel. As we started stressing about food, Yelp app to the rescue! Filter for places open late and several came up in proximity to us. I am not going to lie, backspace was the closest and it had good reviews. We were not disappointed. The food was above average, the atmosphere was old school swanky, the service was warm and friendly, and the vibe chill. We parked in a booth in the corner and split a burger with some grilled veggies on the side. Kudos to backspace for getting me, instead of delivering the staple of broccoli and carrots, they do just like they do, they delivered zucchini and squash. Another reason to love backspace, they like their fries super crisp just like me. Additional kudos to backspace for having hooks under the bar, always a sure sign of a good bar. Next time in nawlins, I will definitely stop into backspace again and you should too.

Charles D.

Yelp
Lunch: Not gonna lie. They do serve a really good burger on a sweet-ish bun. Very addicting. Small cut fresh fries with good seasoning. Had a little spice. Price was very good too. Place is cozy and out of the way feeling. Now the mouse that scampered behind my feet and towards the front door is another thing. But considering that this is New Orleans...
google avatar

RJ H.

Yelp
I really want to give this place a higher rating but service was a little suspect here. They were out of a lot of items which is fine, just gives me a reason to come back, however service was a little slow. Very friendly but slow. I get the impression that the bartender/server is new which I'll give some grace for as well. The food was great! I'd absolutely come back for the food and hope the service improves with experience.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
I've been obsessing over coming here since before my trip to NOLA and I was not disappointed. The staff and bartenders here are so wonderful and the food is good too. The menu is small but it doesn't really matter. I would love to come back, or ya know, have them move it to Michigan ;)
google avatar

Rich N.

Yelp
Love this place with its laidback vibe with the 80's music and non touristy environment. Boudin balls were very good as well.

Alyssa C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite bars in New Orleans. Great music and drinks. It is super laid back and away from the bourbon street noise.
google avatar

Tara K.

Yelp
Stopped by on our way shopping, stops at shops along the way and went in for a drink and a snack. We ordered spicy margaritas and a blueberry Gimlet. I've had better spicy margaritas($11 ea), and at the same time this really isn't a place I would expect a great margarita, if that makes sense. I wish it had some salt on the rim. The blueberry Gimlet (was made with Tanqueray and receipt say it was a double? Don't recall her asking for that. $14) was very tasty, I've never tried a Gimlet before. We ordered 2 apps, fried pickles($9) and Brussel sprouts($7). They were both plentiful and delicious. The pickles had a cornmeal coating, which was different. The Brussels had some jalapenos in it, and if I remember correctly, some balsamic on them. There were 3 of us, and we couldn't finish the apps. Jake was our server, he was nice and attentive. The decor was really unique, leather sofas and seating, with framed photos of authors on the brick walls.

Aaron S.

Yelp
I had the BLT and the boudin balls which were alright but I completely lost my appetite when I saw a mouse run across the floor multiple times. I wish I would have looked closer at the reviews from a few years ago because this isn't a new problem for them. Yuck

John B.

Yelp
Food was very good and prompt from ordering. Bartender could have been more interactive being she was very cute.
google avatar

Lorena C.

Yelp
Went to this spot bc it was near where we were hanging out and the reviews were decent. We got take out so first thing, there's no free parking unless you use the valet next door and just run in really fast, if they aren't busy. The backplane burger: like this whole experience Average. The Brie, unremarkable, the fries: shoestring and ok. Brussels sprouts: delish. Order on the phone, staff was friendly and service was quick. Not a place I'd return to, but I was curious so now I know.
google avatar

Sue F.

Yelp
We came to this gastropub per Yelp reviews. It was easy enough to find and the atmosphere is very unique. They have very unusual drinks and a good selection of local beers. There were 3 bartenders and 8 patrons during our visit. My DH ordered the burger and I order the Hemingway sandwich. The burger was good but the homemade chips were a bit on the greasy side. The Hemingway was good but the fries were limp. We sat at a table and ordered at the bar. When my husband wanted his 2nd beer he ordered it at the bar and after the bartender took his order he proceeded to make a drink for another patron and talk to another. After a long wait he looked up and scurried down to my husband telling him he was sorry for the wait. The music was great, the food was OK, but the service needed some improvement.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Understaffed. The girl working the bar was the only one there and it was unrealistic for her to serve everyone at once. I waited 20 minutes at the bar to order before leaving. I do think they know their cocktails and drinks. She made a big much of different and complex drinks before I bailed.
