Brothers Jesse and Tyler Rice run a farm-in-the-back, restaurant-in-the-front concept where on-site gardens drive the weekly Garden Creations menu. Lauded by Visit Florida and Southern Living, it’s the city’s clearest expression of farm-to-table done by actual farmers.

I recently visited Backwoods Crossing at 6725 Mahan Dr, inTallahassee, FL. I had a very good lunch here. I sat in the bar area and had a very good person taking care of my drink and food order. I ordered the blue crab corn bisque which I thought was too light and a delicious Caesar salad w grilled chicken. A very good restaurant.

Google
Fantastic restaurant! Now included in my Tallahassee top 3. I started with the Rowdy Shrimp app. Think Bang Bang with more of a Buffalo spin. Great crunch, just the right amount of heat in the sauce and complimented with blue cheese crumbles. Speaking of blue cheese, I had the house salad with their homemade blue cheese dressing that was delicious! Salad was a large portion of mixed greens with tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and shaved parmesan. I followed that with the black and blue boar burger, a blackened 70/30 mix of pork and ground beef with blue cheese crumbles (done with blue cheese for a few days). I finished with the apple crumble. There were no issues with parking and the seating was comfortable. All the food was really good with the boar burger as the standout. If I had any critique, maybe the apples were a little too crunchy in the desert; but it was still good. Finally, the service was outstanding. I look forward to returning so I can try some of the dinner selections. Oh, and there's a very friendly cool cat (Hades) hanging out in the garden.

Google
Such a great little spot. Farm to table food! All our food was amazing. We were only in town over the weekend and made it possible to go every night it was just that good. Service was great. We had a pretty big multi family party and they made room for us pretty quickly at a very busy time. Perfect stop right off of I10! Would absolutely recommend Backwoods Crossing!

Google
Visiting from out of town & a google search lead me to this place. It was exceptional. Great vibes from the staff and the atmosphere alike. Food was amazing. Highly recommend Jade, she was great. If I come back into town I will def come back. You can’t beat farm to table, it hits different than a chain restaurant. Check this place out!

Google
I've been here twice and it never disappoints. Delicious craft cocktails and the food is next level. They have huge garden areas out back and grow most of their own food. Fresh and delectable!

Google
Southern food 100% is great tastes. We have a variety dishes. Love the cat fish fillet’s and seafood heaven. For starter crab cake was amazing.

Google
Visiting from Jacksonville, and Backwoods Crossing was a standout experience! The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The crab cakes were packed with crab meat, perfectly golden, and paired with fresh herbs that elevated the dish. Every plate had generous portions and a thoughtful balance of flavors. The quality of the ingredients was clear with every bite. The atmosphere inside and outside the restaurant was just as impressive as the food. The interior had a warm, rustic charm with unique decor, creating a cozy, inviting vibe. The outdoor space was peaceful and beautifully designed—perfect for enjoying a relaxing meal surrounded by nature. To top it all off, the staff was super friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. The prices were very reasonable and matched the level of food and service. If you’re ever in the Tallahassee area, Backwoods Crossing is a must-visit. Honestly, we’d drive back from Jacksonville just to eat here again!

Yelp
"This is what happiness tastes like!" said my kid. Delightful experience and excellent food. We went on a Saturday night around 6:30 pm. We waited 20 minutes and were seated. We walked around the gardens, petted a cat, and visited the chickens while we waited. The food was fresh, interesting, and delicious. We like the relaxed atmosphere and high caliber food. We tried the Tuna a la South, Seafood Heaven, and Stolen from N'awlins. Everything was beautifully plated and tasted incredible. We ended with meal with a hearty shared bread pudding. Service was friendly and she was able to answer all of questions about the menu and make excellent recommendations.

Yelp
This is a very unique place. Farm to table theme, with some of the gardens right outside. I had the catfish bites over crits. Spectacular. My friend had the brie pressed sandwich, also great. We started with the garden charcuterie board. Had a lot of stuff that was tasty, but some insane hot pepper. They should warn you! My mouth burned for 20 minutes, and I like hot food! Service was acceptable, maybe a little slow at times. They also had no draft beer, as it was too hot outside. I did not understand this, but whatever. Worth stopping here.
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Tuesday is two for one draft beers. The old fashioned was excellent. I ordered the Hog in the Henhouse and it was delicious. Could have used a little more salt/seasoning but that's a very minor complaint. Everyone else also loved their dishes which included the Stolen from 'Nawlins and the special lamb shank. Staff was very courteous. Great meal.

Yelp
This place was great! Especially if you want farm to table food! They have a dessert menu and specials too. The service was great, our waitress refilled our waters constantly and check up on us regularly! The place is very southern and offers lots of places to sit. There are booths, tables, and high top sitting! Overall this place was great and filling!

Yelp
The street taco egg rolls were really good. It was on the fresh garden menus that they change weekly. I wanted the stuff chicken but they were out of it when we came. I will be back to try it.

Yelp
We had a great experience here, our server Elizabeth is a big part of what makes this place great, she is very knowledgeable, professional and engaging and a pleasure to interact with. This restaurant is truely a farm to table venue, it's surrounded by gardens filled with fresh ingredients that are incorporated into many of the dishes offered here. They have an exceptional drink menu with $10 Martinis only Monday's, I chose to upgrade my Dirty Martini to Ketel One Vodka and added (3) cheese stuffed olives for twenty-five cents each and well worth the investment. We enjoyed a Wild Boar Burger with their house sauce and a generous portion of bleu cheese crumbles cooked medium served on a fresh sourdough roll I chose the Pork Collards both selections were exceptional I highly recommend this combo - the collards were some of the best I've had anywhere, there's hot pepper vinegar on the table that added a complexity that makes this a signature dish. The burger is definitely a must try as well. We also ordered the Grill Chicken Brie Sandwich with curly fries, the chicken was tender and moist and finished with a hint of citrus served on the delicious sour dough roll as well. Deciding to dine here was a great choice and although the parking lot was mostly filled we were seated immediately without a wait. The prices were very reasonable and a great value considering the crafted food and drinks and the exceptional service, it also appears to be a local's favorite which means everything to a business that puts this much effort into everything they do, this is definitely worth your bookmark...

Yelp
Drop a star from previous review. The service is still excellent. The food is just ok. I like the ideal of natural ingredients. But it was not sit well with my stomach. I got the blue crab corn bisque. The creamy soup is good. Crab meat is crump size. Can tell much crab meat. I got the prime rib sandwich. The meat is sliced. Not sure it worth the money. Overall is good. But can be better

Yelp
We have been eating here for lunch every 3-4 weeks for years. Today we went because we both love fried okra (one of the specials). It turns out that the okra consisted of one piece used as a garnish. The dish was described as "garlic-lemon grouper dip, corn tortilla chips, panko fried okra". What a disappointment! In addition there was an off odor in the whole restaurant today. Sewage? Backed up drains? Garbage? We will not be back.

Yelp
Best fresh and delicious food! Large portions. Service was amazing! What a lovely surprise finding this restaurant on our long drive home. I will always stop here on our travels. I highly recommend, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Always delicious. Farm to Table makes for great flavors and fresh food. Stuffed crab balls and Catfish PoBoy. Bread pudding was amazing.

Yelp
It was a $20 burger, which is crazy but it was freaking delicious so there is that. Service is quick and friendly, no complaints

Yelp
Best food we've eaten in years, so flavorful and creative. We are looking forward to going back! Both kids and adults loved it, the atmosphere is charming, the garden was really fun to explore, and we love the fact that they have so many options for various types of eaters.

Yelp
Everything about this place was just phenomenal! I picked it while on a long road trip home from Florida to NM based off of the menu descriptions and proximity to the highway/route. I was not expecting farm to table freshness as I didn't take much time to read their info, but afterwards I did a bit of research and their story is as intriguing as their food. You can definitely taste the freshness and the vibrancy in their foods. I was greeted by a super friendly cat who also waited for me so he could say goodbye when I left. Inside was very nice, good atmosphere and friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Didn't mind me asking a million questions and had detailed recommendations. I started with basil buttons for an appetizer, they were perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. I had the shrimp salad, and everything about it just kept getting better with each bite. I swear new flavors just kept emerging and they worked so well together. The warm Brie cheese paired well with the blueberry jalapeño reduction and the caramelized apples, and of course the grilled/sauteed shrimp was fresh and the portion was generous. This is definitely a place I will be coming back to on future trips this direction, I only wish it was closer or we had one closer. I look forward to tasting whatever they have in season next time I stop there.

Yelp
We had a group of about ten for lunch at the Backwoods Crossing. The atmosphere was perfect to celebrate July 4 th and this down-home country of ours. We each ordered from their farm to table menu with satisfaction. Hope to meet there again. Thank you Backwoods Crossing, the Ladies who Lunch.

Yelp
Date Night at Backwoods Crossing was GREAT. It is now ranked as our #2 favorite restaurant in Tallahassee. We are kind of ashamed and disappointed to learn that although it has evolved over the years, this Farm-to-Table spot has been in Tallahassee since 2016 (in different versions of its current self). Here' why it's #2 for us: The Service. Sohanie was fantastic. And true to her Sanskrit name, she was beautiful & pleasant and also timely, informed, attentive, and willing to engage. Great smile and good energy from her. The Vibe. If you have visited Farm-to-Table spots, this has the same feeling. We read the origin story of Backwoods Crossing after we left and the only thing better than that story was the service and the food. The Food. The basil button mushroom appetizer and the crab claw cakes appetizer were nicely portioned and flavorful starters. We had our eyes on just the crab cakes but Sohanie steered us toward theushrooms and we were pleased. The pesto sauce was a tasty and unique addition to grilled mushrooms. For our main courses, we ordered the Seafood Heaven and the Country Catfish. Both were served over yellow grits. The fry on that catfish was special: It was light, crispy, and spot on salty. The blackened shrimp was delicious and the cream cheese filling in the crab bites/balls was different and surprising good. The Drinks. The special cocktail included Tito's, peach, and chimichirri. It was too sweet, light on the alcohol, and needed citrus plus a little salt. We asked for lime and it enhanced the flavor. The Dessert. Bread Pudding (Yes!). Apple Crumble (No) because it was over spiced and we couldn't taste the apple. The Story. Great story of two brothers coming together to cook great food and grow the produce for self sustainability. Love it.

Yelp
Our first time visit food, service, and ambiance was fantastic. Farm to table food was great.

Yelp
Wow. The portions of food are huge. We ended up splitting a steak and frankly there was still too much to eat. 1. The steak was well prepared (over a grill, sizzling!). 2. The veggies were perfect. It was a mix of carrots, Brussel sprots and other fun stuff yum! 3. The crab balls were delightful. My only knock, not enough of the dip that came with them! Our server was awesome. They had local craft brew beer, which always makes me happy. Overall this is a really great place to visit in Tallahassee. I won't even take a star for the horrible parking.

Yelp
The food: crab soup was great with plenty of crab, heavy cream a few very fresh slivers on scallions added a nice touch. Next; the catfish poorboy Perfectly cooked catfish with rhe right proportions of lettuce, tomato and sauce all on a super soft sub roll. The beer batter breaded fries were also damned tasty...nice and crunchy. My wife had a chicken Ceasar salad. She said the chicken was moist and tender, the fried bacon was terrific and the blue cheese was the best she has ever tasted. Overall dining here was a great experience. A very generous serving of wine too. Very prompt and friendly wait staff too.
google avatar

Yelp
Looking for a unique dining experience? Come here where they grow their herbs and veggies serving you what's in season. They have a season al menu along with permanent menu items. All handcrafted with flavor that won't disappoint.

Yelp
Service was first rate, always refilling drinks and pleasant. The food was good, but the water here is horrendous, even with lemon. It lives up to the farm-to-table vibe.
google avatar

Shae R.

Yelp
The service needs a bit of work in terms of customer engagement and acknowledgement, but maybe with not all crew members. The food has been great on almost all visits. Crab cakes are the bomb!!! The atmosphere is pretty decent and comfortable. Love the farm tour. Hope that expands and is more engaging for customers. Love the uniqueness!!!

Yelp
We were traveling back to Jacksonville from Perdido Key and googled lunch spots in Tallahassee. This popped up as the number one spot on Yelp and it was very convenient to I10. Once I checked out the menu, I thought this would work for both me and hubby. I am a vegetarian/pescatarian (wild caught seafood only) and he is a carnivore. We pulled into a very rural looking restaurant and questioned my decision. It's behind a low rent motel and a bit different from places we typically go to. We were greeted right away and seated. It took a few minutes before our server Natalie came over but she was very nice. She asked if we had been there before and we said we had not, so she gave us the run down. She explained the farm to table concept etc. I had researched the restaurant but appreciated her sharing her knowledge with us. Unfortunately, when telling us what they were out of, it was the prime rib sandwich, which was the only thing my husband would want there. I asked about the Gulf Shrimp appetizer to confirm they were true wild caught shrimp and not farm raised, and sadly they are farm raised. Please do not advertise farm raised shrimp as Gulf Shrimp. This is not the farm to table concept you advertise. We then debated leaving or staying. We asked if they could make a regular burger not stuffed with all the vegetables and that was not an option either. We settled on a chicken sandwich for the hubby and I had the caprese sandwich. We added the two different fry options as our sides. I also had a few glasses of Chardonnay. The sandwiches were both tasty. The fries were straight off a food delivery truck and not made in house. The wine was nice enough though warm for Chardonnay. The atmosphere is rustic. The concept is great however the execution is not there. Over rated for its concept in my opinion.

Yelp
Had a really awesome lunch here! the service was super great, jakayla (I think her name was) was so sweet. started with the mozzarella logs, then we had the stolen from nawlins pasta and the Brie apple chicken sandwhich. Everything was unreal, the pasta was truly delicious and loaded with chicken sausage and veggies. The portion was huge as well. Loved the tiramisu for dessert too, the baileys cream really complemented the cake. Can't wait to come back!!

Yelp
What a great find as we were driving from Pensacola to Jacksonville! Easy access right off of I-10. Saturday night 6:30PM had a wait time of 1hr15min - however the 4 high top tables at the bar are FCFS ... we quickly moved there. Incredible waitstaff - very attentive and friendly. The decor is eye-catching. And the freshness of the ingredients makes this a 5-star dining experience. The food was filled with flavor and the bread pudding literally melted in your mouth.

Yelp
Had dinner last night at Backwoods Crossing. Such a cute and charming place. Very welcoming! We started with deviled eggs which had a smoky flavor and were on top of their amazing collards. Along with the pickled peppers, some of the best greens I have had. Then moved on to a terrific green salad. All the produce was very fresh tasting and the vinaigrette was perfect. I had the Black and Blue Boar Burger which was SO good. Very juicy and the tang from the blue cheese was just enough. The sourdough bun was delicious. Soft but held up to the burger and just a hint of sweetness. I took half home so I could try the key lime pie! I can't wait to return!

CJ Y.

Yelp
Wow, just wow! I stumbled upon this place on the way down to Panama City thanks to Yelp. Immediately, I was caught by the produce growing outside and the farm to the table atmosphere. My server was incredible - if management reads this, she let my try the mashed sweet potatoes before I left and I was blown away- give this girl more shifts for her perfect attitude. I recommend the deviled eggs with the bonus of greens as a garnish! My spin Cobb salad was perfect with their homemade honey mustard dressing - which may be the best honey mustard I've had. I also tried the Nawlins pasta and was not disappointed. Really a 10/10 place from the service to the food.

Curlie Joe’s D.

Yelp
Highly recommend love this place ! N'awlins dish was epic! Great beer selection. You will not be disappointed in service quality and quantity. I highly recommend

Yelp
Finally got an opportunity to go here and it was excellent. The service was great, our waitress was very attentive and kept us informed. I think our order took a bit longer than usual due to the braised pork dish, but the person who ordered it was over the moon and said it was excellent. I had the crabbie patty and it was very good! I appreciated the pescatarian and healthy options they had. The interior was super cute as well, and the bathrooms were clean. We got there right when it opened so I imagine there might've been more of a wait if we'd gone later since it was a Saturday morning. Overall I definitely recommend and will come back at some point. It's a bit out of the way but understandable since they need the extra space to grow the ingredients they use in their dishes. You can tell how fresh everything is, and the small agriculture space outdoors adds to the charm of this restaurant.

Yelp
Always great, food and service. We enjoy the family environment as well as the meal. Highly reccomend.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a couple times and I have loved everything I've ordered! The seared tuna sandwich, mammoth burger, and stuffed crab balls were both so amazing and definitely worth the price. The restaurant itself is also just so adorable and I love the homey feeling! I definitely recommend going here!

Yelp
Had lunch with family and friends for A total of 9. The server was very accommodating. We came I w/o reservations and were seated in less than 20 min. The service was good, but the food was amazing. We order multiple appetizers ( catfish , crab balls and mozzarella cheese logs). For main dishes we had their burgers, chicken sandwich, crab salad, prime rib sandwich. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The burgers were amazing. But the hot chicken sandwich is a must. Their curly fries were also delicious. This a great spot for lunch. I highly recommend Thai place.
google avatar

Vernest A.

Yelp
Pretty good food, I'm a big eater so I definitely look for quality and quantity. LoL!!! And my food must come to the table hot, can't stand Luke warm or cold food. The food here was very good. I will return.
google avatar

Andre L.

Yelp
The service was fair to good, albeit it was crowded when I ate there. After reading about its history, food ingredients, etc. I was persuaded to try it out. Unfortunately, the menu offerings were not as extensive as I was expecting, the quality of food spoken of was not delivered, and it was a bit over-priced. I will try again on a slower day sometime soon to give it a better opportunity to convince me!
google avatar

Yelp
I was taking my best friend out to dinner cause she has been sick. Went to Ruby Tuesday's cause was close but they had staffing issues and were closing early. Looked on Yelp to choose another alternative and noticed how well rated this restaurant was. It deserves all those stars it has received. The service was great and Dane was our server. I tried the southern style chicken cordon bleu. I have to say it was fantastic. Better than regular cordon bleu. Bread pudding for dessert. Best I have found since my grandmother's. Anyone in the area should try this. They raise a lot of their own vegetables and herbs and you can tour that area if you want. Overall am so glad that Ruby Tuesday's had issues which put me in the position to find this place. I am not from the Tallahassee, FL area but will definitely stop in again when in the area.

Yelp
The food is so amazing, keeps your taste buds exciting.. Will return for more entries
google avatar

Lorraine G.

Yelp
Always crowded. Seems like there's a wait whenever you go, but it's worth it once you seated the service is impeccable and the menu is creative and delicious. It is a farm to table restaurant so they grow a lot of their own produce. We sat in a booth and found it very cozy
google avatar

Yelp
Food was outstanding. You can't go wrong with the big foot. Service excellent. Ambiance is great, walk in the garden. Going back for sure.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best meals! We had kind of a hard time finding a place; but we lucked out dining here! Great space, gardens everywhere, too bad it isn't a nice day, so we ended up inside at the bar. Our server Taylor was great, and I have never had food come out of the kitchen so quickly and so perfectly; not to mention innovative cocktails. I had a blueberry mojito, and a shaved steak sandwich. Wayne went for a mayflower margarita and the Beast Burger. He decided on a second drink for dessert, I had the key lime pie. Each dish was prepared as ordered, plated and almost too perfect to eat! But we did and so appreciative of the reviews that led here
google avatar

Gladys L.

Yelp
It was my first time even though I live in Tally for about 7 years now. They grow their own veggies and I must say, the salad was delicious. Staff were friendly and accommodating. I just wished they would have some option for gluten sensitive folks. But all you really can eat is the salad. Inside is super cute. And if you are lucky you get some entertainment by watching cute cats playing outside.

Rick B.

Yelp
Food was wonderful, fresh and amount was way more than I could eat. Drinks were alcohol forward which is what all drinks should be. Service was very attentive. Overall a great experience.

Yelp
Met some friends for dinner; first time back at this restaurant since COVID! Great food! Our server was very nice/pleasant. The rating involves being somewhat uncomfortable during our dining experience due to the temperature in the room - it was quite chilly! Our server mentioned that she'd have the manager adjust the temp, though this didn't seem to make much difference. We all had to eat with our coats on, which was not ideal. Several of us ordered coffee before the meal to help keep us warm (I usually save the coffee for the end of the meal to go along with dessert). :o) Notably, the first round of my coffee was lukewarm, and I had to send it back. But, the second round was to my liking - piping hot! :o) Overall, aside from the issue with the room temperature, we really enjoyed the food. We ordered several appetizers for the table, all of which were yummy: jalapeno catfish bites (without the jalapenos and with the spicy beast sauce on the side) and cheese grits, Mahan Mozz Logs (mozzarella sticks), Stuffed Crab Balls, Basil Buttons. For our entrees, I ordered the Tossed Quinoa Caesar salad with blackened chicken, which was oh-so good! My husband ordered the Mammoth with a garden salad. Other orders at the table included the Apple Brie Chicken sandwich. Our meal was topped off with the peanut butter swirl cheesecake - delish!!! Others in our party ordered the bread pudding, which they also thoroughly enjoyed. Looking forward to sampling other menu items for our next visit! Hopefully, there won't be an issue with the temp. :o)

Yelp
Cool spot Farm to Table Lots of options Great for large crowds Kids Lots of parking Food was tasty Wait staff was very kind Great find in Tallahassee

The R.

Yelp
They always exceed my expectations with food and service. Although service was a little slow at times, it was great being able to spend more time with friends outside in the gardens.

Dean T.

Yelp
I ordered The Beast which is their signature burger medium rare. It was a dry flavorless slab of overcooked cheap meat. Maybe the other items on the menu are good but the burger was beastly for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Last night we saw an episode of Diners, Drive-in's and Dives that highlighted Backwoods Crossing. We happen to be flying into Tallahassee today and thought we would give it a try. It was delicious!!!! I highly recommend stopping by. We had the majority of the tiny bites, the jalapeño Catfish Bites were out of this world. The Mozz Logs - huge and great. The truffle bruschetta with the pickled peppers were excellent. For an entree we shared the Hog in the Henhouse - Amazing. The Crab Cake Stack was our favorite thing. To end our meal we had the bread pudding, it was spectacular. Stop by this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Nice farm to table concept ! I enjoy the atmosphere in this restaurant. Just be aware there is a special menu if you want things from the garden. Not all items contains items from their garden. I ordered the ahi salad and the meat was great. The salad was wilted, but when asked, they replaced it willingly and happily. Also I tried the harvest soup and it was very good

Yelp
The best buffalo chicken sandwich in Leon county, for starters. And it goes to say everything else is delicious and the ingredients are always fresh!

Kathryn E.

Yelp
The food was awesome. The service was awesome. The atmosphere was awesome. The restrooms were very clean.
