Backyard Bowls Review - Beverly Grove - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Remember when we were young and nothing mattered? When you didn’t pull your shoulder taking a nap and the only responsibility in life was to not die before summer break? #TBT. It’s hard not to feel that sense of youthful nostalgia walking into Backyard Bowls, the shiny acai bowl hangout spot on Beverly Blvd. Acai berries are definitely the new “it” fruit that unlike the blender of lies Jamba Juice fed us for a decade, doesn’t actually kill you. In fact, quite the opposite. “Superfood” is usually a term we prefer to associate with things such as ranch dressing, pierogis, and french fries dipped in a Wendy’s Frosty, but apparently acai berries is actually one. Who knew? If you want to see the effects of this berry yourself, just look around. Everyone at Backyard Bowls, both behind the counter and otherwise, looks like a Quiksilver ad from a Barbie fever dream. Everyone appears to be 18 years old but could be well into their mid-40s. Believe in the berry. But of course Backyard is much more than acai. Every bowl on the menu is topped with a cornucopia of impressive looking fruit. You order at the front counter first and head to the back to pick up your delicious pile of health. But that’s not before making a stop at DJ Blender Booth. You read that right. A sound proof glass booth in the middle of the store where all the blending is done so not to disturb the pure eardrums of its patrons. We live in the best time. Backyard Bowls is a Santa Barbara staple and its first LA locale is hitting on all cylinders. It’s quick, healthy, and surprisingly fulfilling. So head over and plop down at one of the space’s picnic tables. It’s LA’s latest fountain of youth. Food Rundown Island Bowl With a blended acai base and topped with everything under the sun, this is a crowd favorite and the best example of what makes this place awesome. Green Bowl You honestly feel a few years of your life getting tacked back on with this guy. A base of acai, kale, and spinach gives this bowl a kick the other bowls lack. Power Bowl If you’re looking to bulk up this summer, this is your order. Basically every naturally occurring source of protein is located in this bowl. HULK SMASH! Pangea Bowl Probably the strangest bowl in an already strange place, get ready for such ingredients as Pitaya, Aronia Berry, Baobab, and Bee Pollen. We have no idea what those mean, but we’re into it. Berry Bowl The signature bowl at Backyard, this is sweet goodness right here. The Goji berry can be a tough chew but at the same time, what are we even talking about?" - Brant Cox

On the Grid : Backyard Bowls

"Better life through better food. Backyard Bowls opened their first doors in Santa Barbara back in 2008, and have since grown to open 4 locations, including one in LA. Backyard Bowls offers one of the best acai bowls around, using only organic, sustainable, and locally produced ingredients in all of their menu items. I recommend Diego’s Power Bowl which has a base of acai, banana, strawberry, hemp protein, and peanut butter hemp milk, topped with banana, hemp seeds, granola, and honey. It’s healthy, tasty, and filling - the regular bowl size is definitely enough to fill you up, and if you want a smaller portion, the Berry or Island Bowl in the kids size are a great option!" - Amanda Proudfit

The island bowl is amazing!!! So creamy with generous portions and fresh fruit. Add peanut butter and honey, you won’t regret it! Came here 3 out of 4 days on our trip after trying it once.

Google
Backyard Bowls is hands down one of the best spots in town. Every time I walk in, I’m greeted with fresh ingredients, friendly staff, and a vibe that instantly lifts your mood. Their support of the local community is something I truly appreciate. They don’t just serve food, they show up for people and causes that matter. Whether I need a healthy breakfast, a quick lunch, or just something that makes me feel good, Backyard Bowls always delivers. Plus, their bowls are so good they make you forget you're eating something healthy.

Google
Everything was great! Very healthy açaí bowl with tons of options. Very glad I stopped by. The staff was amazing and full of smiles!

Google
Slightly disappointed, came in and ordered a smoothie, at 12:26pm. There was a group of four ahead of me, each ordered a bowl. I noticed there were about 5 employees that I saw working and sadly it took 20 minutes to get my smoothie. I realize fresh food takes time, but 20 minutes for $12 smoothie seems like a long wait time. Always been a fan of BYB, actually worked there myself many years ago, wish wait times were not so long. Thanks anyways, they always taste delicious.

Google
Super yummy acai bowls and smoothies 😍 Very affordable as well, and kind staff! Definitely recommend!🤍🤍

Google
Just have to express how much I love the smoothie bowl here. One of the best!

Google
Bowls were huge and delicious! The large is enormous for only a couple dollars more. The bowls are super tasty but I would say they should be served in a wider bowl so that more toppings can be enjoyed with the actually açaí underneath. It was quite busy on a Saturday morning so be prepared for a little wait. I think it’s worth it. Got the warrior bowl and Santa Barbara

Luis Diaz

Google
Small breakfast spot that gives huge portions. There are plenty of delicious options, particularly the acai bowls, and a create your own bowl feature as well. I got the power bowl with protein and it was very filling. Decorative seating area that gives off a chill vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
HUGE BOWLS! For $30, these two for the size were crazy, there was so much açaí and it was icey as well which was delicious. The employees also let me replace the hemp granola with cacao nibs which made me very happy. The strawberries were very tart though. Community is lucky to have this cute spot. Lots of places to sit in the cute side area.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Friday around 2:00pm. The worker who took my order was friendly. I was handed a plastic table number and they brought my order to me. It was pretty busy but I was able to find a spot to sit on a bench. I ordered a regular berry bowl and it was filling as a stand alone meal. Next time I would not order it with Goji berries as they were too hard and sticky for my taste. Decent açaí bowl overall.

Yelp
My friend and I went on a whim while stopping by Santa Barbara. I got a small island bowl and my friend got a small berry bowl. We were going between the small and regular size. But since we had a snack before, we decided on the small. And it was the perfect size! Also depending on the time that you go, parking can be a hassle. We went on a Saturday around 2pm and we circled around for parking a few times. Fortunately, people come and go frequently to all the shops and restaurants nearby so it's not impossible to find it...just might need to wait a bit. Overall, solid açaí bowls and cute eatery in Santa Barbara! So glad there's a few more locations all over SoCal.
google avatar

Amelia S.

Yelp
Stopped in for smoothies and an açaí bowl. The shop is cute with a small seating patio. The folks working there are friendly as well. I loved the mint chip smoothie! It was tasty, refreshing, and balanced in flavor. DH got a super green smoothie and enjoyed that as well. We also tried a dragon fruit açaí bowl, which was also very good. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
I love backyard bowls! Made the mistake of ordering a regular and that thing is HUGE. If you love your acai bowls this is the place to go.
google avatar

Rich S.

Yelp
These açaí bowls were amazing. We both had the medium power bowl. Loved how they mixed the açaí, peanut butter and hemp milk together. All the fruit was super fresh tasting. It was a hot day so the bowls were very refreshing. We arrived right before a big rush and they took our order quickly. Took about 15 min to get our bowls but well worth the wait. If you can get a seat it's a nice place to hangout and enjoy the bowl. Will be back
google avatar

Yelp
Great customer service, price is pretty average for acai bowls. Very refreshing, fruit is very fresh and good quality

Yelp
Always our last stop when visiting SB, always delicious, fresh, and consistently good. My fave is their Spartan Muesli bowl with extra honey. Super good, cold, filling and sweet. Service is fast and the employees are always chill and happy! We'll see you next year!
google avatar

Alexa D.

Yelp
This spot is consistently good! It's a wonderful option when you want to eat something healthy and made with love. I got the blue smoothie with pea protein powder and it was amazing! It had a fruity and creamy flavor with a little ginger kick in the aftertaste. Amazing flavor and texture. The employees are so friendly and were quick to take my order and give me my smoothie. I'm so grateful for them! Not much ambiance in the place itself though they do have a cute outdoor seating area. I prefer to take mine to go!

Yelp
Came on a weekday morning. While there was constant people coming in, there was never really a line. It's right across from a parking lot, which is free until 11:00, so parking was easy. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We ordered 2 different bowls (Island and Power), and they probably took 5 minutes to come out. If you eat there, they give you an actual bowl and spoon. I appreciate that it's less waste. The bowls were both fresh and delicious. The rest of the menu looks great too. I love all the local and superfood options. They have several locations throughout the LA area as well, so I will definitely look them up when traveling around. Good stuff!

Yelp
Everytime we're in Santa Barbara, we try to make room for an acai bowl here. Got the Island Bowl as usual. The fruits always taste so fresh and the acai portion is good too. We find street parking nearby all the time. Or you can park in the public lot right in front of the store. There is a seating area adjacent to the store but not a big one. Service is always friendly here.
google avatar

Ayesha A.

Yelp
Love the acai place! They have a great variety to choose from and the freshest fruit on top. I never had one without sweet fruit :) They are definitely big, so you get full quickly.
google avatar

Mona A.

Yelp
I ordered the açaí smoothie and the Santa Barbara açaí bowl with added peanut butter--both were delicious. I've been coming here since my UCSB days, and it's a classic for açaí with consistently great ingredients. You order at the counter, take a number, and they bring your food to the table. The service is good, and the beachy, casual ambiance is perfect for a summer day in Santa Barbara.
google avatar

Lexi A.

Yelp
The Santa Barbara Bowl is hands down my favorite! I visit often, especially in the summer - it's the perfect meal for a hot day and great to take down to the beach. Always delicious!

Yelp
We found free parking right on the front row in front of Backyard Bowls. We were craving smoothies and came here for something refreshing. I ordered the green bowl, and I also ordered a mermaid smoothie for my son. It was not on their menu in the restaurant, but I saw it on instagram. So we gave it a shot! I loved my green bowl. It was with fresh fruit that was so amazing. I wasn't a big fan of the mermaid smoothie as much.

Liane M.

Yelp
Incredible bowls and smoothies. You will get plenty of food for your money. Great variety of fresh ingredients to include in your bowl or smoothie. I had the Blue Moon and added protein and turmeric. So good and filling. My husband had one of the Açaí bowls, chock full of fruit, nuts, and seeds. The seating isn't great, but fine for a quick stop. Staff were friendly and helpful in navigating their menu options. Would go back again!
google avatar

Brianna L.

Yelp
a great açaí place with a lot of free parking! the staff are super helpful with any questions and there are many places to sit outside. both these bowls had a lot of fruit and were really filling. the agave added some good sweetness! would really recommend the power bowl for anyone who likes peanut butter!
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
SO YUMMY!!!! I came back twice in two days because it was so delicious and we were craving some more acai bowls with fresh fruit. I got the island bowl, the protein bowl and the Santa Barbara bowl. The seating is adorable with most of it being outside. The people working there are super chill and we did have to wait a while for our food to come but it was worth it!

Yelp
I love it. I really do. Periodically I will get a strong craving for an acai bowl or one of their smoothies, like the "Lion" one with ashwaganda, lion's mane, black pepper, bee pollen. It's likely that I crave Backyard Bowls after stints of eating a lot of Mexican food or carbs or something. It's not unlike when you are traveling and eating a lot of rich food, and badly need a big ole' salad. When I get this hankering, BB really hits the spot, as it did an hour ago (today I got a medium-sized Berry Bowl with mushroom blend and cacao nibs as topping. It was spectacular.) It's giving me really good, positive energy. Which says a lot because I woke up super salty this morning. I'm naturally curious about the total sugar content, and that, along with the price, is the only thing that keeps me coming back more regularly. But I'm grateful to have this place around for when those strong cravings arise!

Chelsea T.

Yelp
Possible the best açai... I've been coming here since 2020 every time my family and I visit SB, and they are consistently delicious. Quality ingredients, does not taste like the scoopable açai from other shops. It's refreshing, filling, and so nice to eat on the patio outside. And, the employees are so nice even when they have a rush of orders with a line out the door. Must come try if you are in SB!! (and the price is not jacked up like other places!!!)
google avatar

Nellie M.

Yelp
Its good! It's fair price for what it is and the service is fast! I am not the biggest fan of mushy oatmeal, but some people like their oatmeal like that, I still ate it though. My father got a DELICIOUS bowl which he finished in a matter of minutes. I cannot quite recall the names of these two. But it's nice. I like the atmosphere and the newspapers they had for customers to read.

Yelp
A group of friends and I were having a weekend getaway in Santa Barbara. We went to Backyard Bowls to start off our morning! FYI - this place gets pretty busy and we had a large group, so service can be a little slow. They have a parking lot with free parking for the first 75 minutes though! I got the small Berry Bowl. I loved the portion! Back in the Bay Area, this is usually the size of a medium. The fruits were fresh and plentiful. I wish the Berry Bowl came with coconut flakes though (I feel like that's usually a staple for an "original" açaí bowl, but it's an extra charge here). I tried a few bites of my friends' orders. If you want something more tropical, go for the Island Bowl. If you like nuts, the Warrior Bowl is a good option!

Gabriella R.

Yelp
Stopped in for a protein smoothie and after some recs from the employee (who was very patient with my questions), went with the Dune Day Crusher. It was so good! My bf got the Blueberry Fields smoothie which was tasty and refreshing. While waiting, we sat outside in the cute patio area. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Santa Barbara!
google avatar

Yelp
I go to the LA Beverly Grove location regularly so I am already a fan. I recently learned Backyard Bowls started in Santa Barbara so it was the perfect spot to get a good açaí bowl during our vacation. Since the bowls are made to order and they seemed busy, the wait was about the 15 minutes, which was mentioned when I placed my order. I like the choice of toppings, and it's easy to customize your order. My go to order is the regular Berry Bowl (5 stars). It has an açaí base with toppings like delicious granola, gogi berries, bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. I didn't add honey on mine. My husband enjoyed his large Island Bowl with gluten free granola. Backyard Bowls delivers good quality and memorable bowls with 4 star service.
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
Got a Hercules on a recent trip through the area. A small busy shop with walk up counter service. My order taker was kind and friendly. Paid at the terminal and waited. My buddies all did the same. As I mentioned it was busy the shop obviously has a lot of customers, all told fifteen minutes maybe from time of order to smoothie received? Okay not great but okay. The drink itself, also okay. There are a ton of smoothie and bowl places around nowadays and it takes a lot to stand out. As such just average. It served its purpose for our visit - it was an okay smoothie, not great and also not bad. But just like a lot of other berry and banana ones out there. Anyways, you get the idea. 3 Stars 00835

Yelp
(Overall: 79% | C) - Overall, the service was pretty good, but the food was mediocre. (Avocado Toast: 80% | B) - Aligned with their mission, this avocado toast is very natural with fresh watermelon radish on top of avocado toast. The pickled onions add good texture and flavor to make the taste pop. Some points for improvement is that the bread looks under toasted, and the overall presentation of the toast can be better assembled. (Acai Smoothie: 72.5% | C) - This is a decently prepared smoothie that tastes natural and healthy in line with what its supposed to be. Unfortunately though, the straw that was provided had zero suction power and it made drinking this very thick smoothie very challenging.

K S.

Yelp
My cashier was the (white) girl with the black curly hair, she was very short with me and incredibly unfriendly when I was trying to order. It seemed like she was annoyed that she had to take my order. She was so much friendlier with her coworkers asking them questions like "what's your favorite holiday" and joking around. When I got my bowl she just handed it to me and didn't smile or say anything. The bowl I got was delicious, I just will not be returning because of the poor customer service.
google avatar

Pamela R.

Yelp
Always amazing! Berry bowl with peanut butter on top is my fave! The smoothies are also very good if you're looking for something lighter
google avatar

adriana m.

Yelp
This place perfect for a healthy breakfast. We order some açaí bowls, avocado toast & butternut toast. I had to say my favorite was the avocado toast. The spread was some type of tomato paste and I order egg whites with it. It was amazing. If you are looking for a quick healthy breakfast this is definitely your spot.
google avatar

Magz B.

Yelp
Go-to açaí spot in SB! Bonus: they keep the bowls cold and ready if you don't get your bowl right away.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
They're really good, but I saw something that I was like, REALLY? This girl behind the counter had her apron hanging off of her head. I was like eww. The coconut shavings better not be hair!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for a lunch while visiting SB for a wedding and it did not disappoint!! Backyard bowls has been a favorite for over a decade and I knew I had to come here for the berry bowl in my quick trip down south. The location is a bit out of the way from the beach (about 10 min walk from the pier) but well worth it. I got the berry bowl and added PB in a size regular. My bf got the avo + egg toast! The regular size is huge! I probably could have shared this with 2 others but this is a great problem to have. I found the acai to be super fresh and delicious. The avo + egg was a pretty underwhelming: there was a single greasy fried egg atop a small avocado spread toast. the egg slipped all over the place, the toast part lacked flavor, and I must say it was one of the lower end avo toasts I have had. In their defense, avocado toast is not what they are known for and so I don't expect it to be the best thing in the shop to be toast...regardless I wouldn't order it again! Thanks for the overall yummy experience Backyard Bowls!!
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Dare I say...the best açaí bowl in Santa Barbara?? It's a bold statement but it honestly might be true. The açaí base is not too sweet but not icy either. It's topped with delicious berries, granola, banana, and the most fabulous honey I have ever had. I personally recommend the berry bowl if you like a good ratio of fruit to granola on your bowl. I always get the regular size and it's a great amount of food and leaves me full. Pro tip: order ahead for pickup! It'll save you some time waiting.
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
Long time fan of Backyard Bowls! The perfect choice for a light meal or snack. It's always super fresh! Their menu is filled with yummy options. I personally love the island bowl. Yesterday I opted for the super green smoothie and love it now too! This location is fun for people watching and hearing the sounds of downtown Santa Barbara. Can't recommend this spot enough!
google avatar

Payal P.

Yelp
My first time going here but it was a good experience! Staff was really nice and they were helpful with questions. I got the tropical bowl which was really fresh and delicious. The only topping I wish they had was Nutella!
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
The best açai! High quality stuff, truly love all the hard work they have put into each bowl. The only downside is I can never talk to a person on the phone, it's all automated. Also I wish they were open a tad later than 5pm.
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
We love Backyard Bowls and have been customers since they originally opened! They've gotten MUCH more popular since then (yay) so it takes a bit longer to get your food, but the quality is still the same! Pros: The bowls are LARGE and will be a filling meal for 1-2 people based on the size. Generous portions of açaí, fruit, granola, and honey. They have some delicious combos and haven't met a bowl we didn't like. They have a reward system now which is always a great incentive for more visits (newer than the old school punch cards). They have some seating that is "outdoors" in a room with a garage style roll up door that feels airy and like you're outdoors. Shared picnic table, bar stools, and a few smaller tables. Can also get your bowls to go and hop down to the beach a block down to enjoy! There is some street parking nearby and a public lot that is free for 75 minutes. You can also order online (when the system is open) for pickup to save you some wait time. Cons: Wait time can be lengthy (but worth it!) and online ordering isn't always turned on. This is a very specific and weird con but I hate their to-go spoons they cut up my mouth with their sharp edges. So I just bring my own spoon.
google avatar

Nina L.

Yelp
Yummy acai bowls and good quick breakfast spot to fuel you for your Santa Barbara adventure. I'm not sure I can give any acai place in the US a 5 star review after having the privilege of tasting the real thing in Brazil. Good value for the price for the amount of acai and fruit you get. They also make smoothies. I ordered a small Island bowl, which was more than enough for a light breakfast. Kept me full until a bigger lunch. Give Backyard Bowls a try if you're looking for an afternoon pick me up or a light breakfast.
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
Stopped by here while visiting the area. Service was quick and attentive when answering my questions. I ended up getting a cup of coffee with coconut milk and a warrior açaí bowl. Lots of veggies and fruit packed into this dish. 10/10 would get this again!
google avatar

natalie r.

Yelp
the acai bowls are so delicious and eating it feels so healthy yet so filling. the actual store is really cute for pics and aesthetically pleasing. the portions are HUGE for an acai bowl place. worth it will be back!

Nithya N.

Yelp
Great delicious acai bowls. The staff is friendly and the portion size is great. I like their protein options. Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
Delicious, large acai bowls! This place serves refreshing and large acai bowls. I got the Santa Barbara bowl, and I enjoyed the toppings and mixture that were in it. The fruits tasted fresh, and there were a fair amount of toppings. The only comment I have to say about the place is that I wish the bowl itself had a bigger diameter, which would allow more room for toppings or make it easier to eat the toppings with the acai (hopefully that made sense). The price of my bowl was about $12, which is very reasonable. Most acai bowls tend to be more expensive than this, but this was a reasonable price, and the bowl was worth it. The employees were super friendly and patient with me (while I took quite a few minutes to decide). They all wore masks, and provided the bowls in a timely manner. This place is located in a small plaza, but the plaza isn't overly busy so parking should not be an issue. There are a few small tables outside for people to eat the bowls. Overall, I highly recommend going to this place. It's delicious and worth it!

Geoff S.

Yelp
This place was amazing. The employees were very engaging and helpful. The bowls were great, they were fine to modify orders and the whole place has a great energy. They remembered us from our visit the day before and gave us a great lunch recommendation.
google avatar

Lerna O.

Yelp
Came here for the first time last week. I ordered the blue moon smoothie and it was a really subtle and wonderful flavor. You can slightly taste the ginger in the drink but it worked well with the rest of the flavors. Definitely recommend the blue moon.
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
My favorite acai bowl. Been coming here for 5 years and it has never failed me. A part of a cute small plaza with parking right next to it. The açaí is also smooth and never icy
google avatar

Jordyn C.

Yelp
We got acai here during our visit to SB. Incredible taste, value, service, etc. We were so pleased that we were able to split a bowl and they were still both filled to the top with acai and toppings. All fruit toppings were perfectly ripe and their granola was my favorite. We enjoyed it on their patio in the sun. Will be returning when in town again.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Yummy place! No option for small, regular size is large. A lot for one person to eat. Good to share!

Dani N.

Yelp
Backyard Bowls is always something I look forward to on a warm Summer morning right before a day at the beach. It's definitely more of a treat rather than a healthy meal, but very filling nonetheless and gives you energy for hours. They are very generous with their fresh fruit, peanut butter, coconut and granola toppings. Some toppings are limited to their seasonal availability. I've been coming here for years but generally as a special occasion treat as they are so pricey and full of sugar. I've had everything from the Acai Oatmeal to the Green Bowl. The Hercules is my go-to smoothie here, but again very sugary and not the healthiest protein shake. It's made with hemp milk which gives it the perfect texture and thickness but is often very heavy. My go-to is generally the Dragon Bowl because I love the pitaya kiwi mix. If you want the cheapest, least filling option I'd recommend the Berry Kid's Bowl. That is the only bowl they small in that size. This Backyard Bowls is located on lower State St next to Santa Barbara Roasting Company. It has its own 75 min free parking lot and street parking nearby, though i've never seen the lot full. You can park here and walk State St up and down after enjoying a bowl or even head down to the pier. It's a really nice central location, limited seating indoors and out, though. It's generally pretty busy so expect to wait a few minutes for your order to be done. They also have a drink fridge inside with kombuchas, waters and teas to go. Great morning spot to stop at before exploring the main touristy areas of SB.

Yelp
What is better than fresh fruit? The answer, an açaí bowl jam packed with a medley of fresh fruits and topped off with a soirée of toppings. Even better is the availability of customization to allow you to create the perfect arrangement of your choosing. Personally, I love adding an extra bed of yogurt for the fruit to cozy up on adding an enjoyable balance of sweetness and tart with every scoop. A must try on a hot day or as a healthy meal alternative.
