"Bad Axe, “the world’s biggest urban axe throwing club,” started in Canada, and now has locations in dozens of U.S. cities, including one in Northeast (2419 Evarts Street NE). The new 4,600-square-foot location will serve beer and wine (no food) and sit in the heart of the growing development at 2985 District Avenue in Fairfax. Bad Axe will host competitive leagues, birthday parties, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and corporate and team-building events. Guests also have an automatic chance to join the global competitive league affiliated with Bad Axes. World Axe Throwing League (WATL) broadcasted their World Championship on ESPN last year, and one of its Bad Axe employees was a winner." - Tierney Plumb

Google
We had a lot of fun! The staff was so helpful and they teach us how to throw in so many ways and kept observing us until we got it right. I will definitely give it another visit!

Google
Really cool, straight to the point spot. The area is really nice and easy to park with. Instructors/Coaches/ employees all are really nice and helpful. Don’t be shy and ask for help, I know I wasn’t. It is so much fun and once you get the hang of it, it becomes addicting! Definitely a cute date idea or just a place to exert some energy!

Google
Did a reservation for a group of 4 here. Instructor was friendly and helpful. Hatchets were sharp and in good shape. We had a great time, and we're pressured to do anything we didn't want to. Recommend coming for a good time but nothing too serious.

Myself, boyfriend and 9 year old son were invited to an adult party at Bad Axe. Robert was an amazing coach. Walking through the door you’re greeted with amazing staff and an easy check in process. Robert was very thorough with instructions and safety. He took extra time to show the younger boys how to throw. We played a couple of games and were taught some trick shots. I will definitely come back and schedule parties at this location in the future.

Google
Fun experience! Went for a company team building experience. For 12 people, they only gave 2 throwing lanes. Didn't get a lot of one on one time to really throw and get the hang of it but still fun!

Veronica

Google
I liked the experience overall! Some places only allow a couple of throws per session, whereas here we were able to throw the axe for 45 min non stop. The place is clean and in a nice area. The front desk gave us instruction for safety and came by periodically with tips how to get the most out of our throws which was great. Looking forward to another round.

Google
Had such a great time on Mother's Day! Kendal was so helpful and patient with us, because when our family gets together, we have a blast and bring the noise!

Google
Had a great time with friends on my birthday. Entered the building having never thrown an ax before, but was soon able to hit the target consistently with one- and two-handed throws. The staff was friendly and explained the process very well, and they even gave my group some fun ways of keeping score and starting a competition. Would definitely come back again to throw the big axes!

Yelp
This place ROCKS. Some friends and I set up a session here last minute and late night, and we had an absolute blast. The instructor was super friendly and fun, but he also made sure we felt really safe. The actual axe throwing was crazy amounts of fun, and the instructor was able to provide a lot of tips and feedback such that everyone was nailing targets by the end of our session. Needless to say, you should definitely check this place out if you can, especially given how convenient its location is!

Yelp
No reservations accepted unless you're in a decent sized group, so it's walk-in only and first come first served. Bae and I got there early on a Saturday so we wouldn't have to wait long and there was a sign on the door that said next group at 6:00pm. As soon as I opened the door and without greeting, the front desk girl said something dismissive like "we're full until 6pm" without saying hello first and before I could even speak. She needs to go to etiquette school or something, cuz girl what in the entire fawk. So anywho, bae and I walk around Mosaic for a bit then come back a little before the next time slots. They only do digital waivers, no paper copies or ipads for you to sign in the business. You have to use your phone, which I thought could use some improvement. The intro to the activity is really fast and you can tell the guy has to do it all day every day, so he rushed through it. LOL! They're better off filming it and having a waiting room with the ipad consent forms and video showing technique and safety tips. The experience is really fun, but some people are horrible throwers so watch your toes because the axe can go sliding. Be safe and be mindful of others throwing because they don't care about your safety. I was kinda bad at it but I still had a really good time. There's even a way to keep track of points like bowling.

Yelp
I've been to this location about a three times before the pandemic and twice since. Although it is a little pricey - around $30 an hour not including tip, it's a great experience. For parties (pre pandemic) there's a guide that will help the party going, suggest games, give you tips. Post pandemic, they socially distance the lanes so different groups are not next to each other, they have an industrial sprayer to spray down the axes and the boards, and there's ample hand sanitizer. Masks are mandatory. For parties of 6 or less, it's walk ins only. Sometimes you just have to get lucky to get a lane, especially since they have to leave some empty for our safety. Parties of 6 and above can reserve a spot. All and all, although it's pricey, it's a great experience every time. They have an axe throne for photo opportunities as well. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We reserved a lane to celebrate our friends birthday, it was a very nice experience. It was a little packed since there was a lot of groups at that time. You can bring your own food, which was great since we had a birthday cake with us. I would definitely visit again.

Yelp
Entertainment - 4/5 Excitement Level - 3.5/5 One thing's for sure, I now know the weapon I can use most effectively in a zombie apocalypse. A throwing axe. Part of the fun of this is you have no idea who will be good at this endeavor. Despite being neither the strongest nor tallest in my group, I was easily the best. And better yet, everyone can play. My wife - who was highly skeptical - eventually started landing axes with regularity and said she enjoyed it far more than she expected. Our group ranged in age from 17-36 and everyone had a good time. The only downsides are there are no refreshments (the website says you can BYOB including alcohol, but when we got there, were told we couldn't drink the alcohol) and it is a bit repetitive after an hour. We eventually did a team HORSE style game that was fun, but I'd have appreciated a bit more variety (if nothing else, different types of targets). One target was particularly beaten up and made it much harder to sick the axes in. But these quibbles are minor. I would definitely recommend Bad Axe for a fun hour or two.

Yelp
9/21/19 A new way to relieve stress and practice your aim with a hatchet. This store has been open for a few weeks now and maybe the first of it's kind in Virginia. Not likely, but possible. Loved seeing the black and red and the black and blue utility kilts on the male employees. These were the kind of kilts I was looking at earlier on this year for the Renaissance Festival in Maryland. You can go here and practice your axe throwing with a group of friends or do it by yourself. This is also a great idea for a date night. It could be a different idea than the usual dinner and movie. It cost $20 an hour per person that walks in off the steeet...(varies by location) Its $30 per person in a group party...(varies by location) Wanna compete in a 8 week tournament? $120...take home money unknown. It might look boring just watching after a while, so I advise participating in the axe throwing. You maybe bad at axe throwing, but you can get better. Then the badass that you are will become good. You might get to take on the owner and battle for ownership of the store...hope you like a challenge.

Yelp
Cool experience. This is my second time Axe throwing. Our instructor seemed very flustered which took the fun out of the experience in the beginning. However as the night went on my group had more fun.

D S.

Yelp
We got here at 8:58pm, posted closing time is 11pm, we were asked to leave since employee told us they are closed, Not accepting any more customers for the night

Heba E.

Yelp
They are still functioning during coVid! I came before covid had a great time with some friends. It's a good place to have some in door fun

Maggie R.

Yelp
We made a reservation on a Friday night and almost had the whole place to ourselves for about the first hour. We had a great coach named JT who was the ABSOLUTE BEST! He chimed in with tips and suggestions to improve our throws when we struggled but never overdid the feedback. He also recommended a game for us after we got some practice throws in and tracked all our scores. He let us play as much as we wanted. By the end of our time, he was cleaning up our area and we saw him casually throwing with a screwdriver as he put things away... and still had excellent aim. He was awesome! Thanks for showing my friends and I a great time as we celebrated a birthday!

Sheilaiiiiiiiiiiis I.

Yelp
We had a great time during our team event with JT. Thanks for all of the instructions and tips! We will definitely return!

Marri G.

Yelp
Was not a fan of this location. It was very crowded and we were on top of each other's lanes. No alcohol allowed as opposed to other axe throwing places I have been. The coach did not take much time teaching/coaching those of us new to axe throwing to help us improve. She spent most of the limited time she was with us explaining new games which seemed fairly pointless considering we had difficulty landing axes on the board.

Shelly Z.

Yelp
I came here during their open house weekend and had a great time! Everyone was friendly and the instructor was great! It seems easy watching others do it, but it was harder than it looks and my instructor gave me tons of helpful advice on throwing. Everyone was super friendly and it was quick and easy to check in and get started! Definitely recommend for a fun group activity.

Lily H.

Yelp
Our group's first time at axe throwing, we were debating between this location and a couple competitors in DC; settled for this due to location. Easy parking in the garage right next to it. Easy check in process, complete a waiver, show your coach, and your in the axe throwing room. We had 6 people and 2 lanes reserved for 2 hours. The price is not cheap by any means, and the main reason for -1 star. $45 per person for the 2 hours! A lof of that cost must be going to their risk insurance. Our coach was Josh and he made our experience really fun and memorable. He explained the rules but in an entertaining manner, and stayed with us the whole time block to offer us various games AND he kept score - how cool is that? He was quick on his feet and just hilarious. If we had an unguided experience, it definitely would not have been the same, so thank you Josh!

Maria N.

Yelp
Fun place. Fun times. A good place to try something new. The staff is helpful and gives pointers on how to throw the axes. And the location is great as it is in the the mosaic district in Fairfax where parking is free and some is close by. I highly recommend this place to try something new. It is a bit pricey per hour though.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Lots of fun. Different experience and was a great place to do a double date. Will probably be back in the near future.

John K.

Yelp
It was great and lots of fun. Our group had a blast. Willing to do again! We had a great coach who gave us tips and new game ideas like "King of the hill", darts, teams, or just 21. Kinda sucks no drinking but then again, would I want a total drunk next to me throwing axes??? Maybe not. But a beer or two wouldn't hurt. Again, lots of places to eat and drink next door so not really an issue.

Lillian D.

Yelp
My group went for a teaming event and had a blast yesterday! The instructor was great he provided lots of direction and had us compete against each. I'll definitely go back great outlet of frustration and sport!

W F.

Yelp
Had a great time here, I think more people should come to this place. It's fun, you get to release some stress or whatever emotions you're dealing with. It's a lot harder than it looks. I fun with some friends definitely looking forward to going with more of my friends in the future. They make sure everyone is safe there with the coaches.

Alan K.

Yelp
Very disappointed. I left a 5 star rating in the past for this same location. We checked the website to see walkin times. 3 to 12. Perfect. I even called to see if we should book or can just do a walk in to save money. We went with walk in. So we got my boys and one of their friends and drove 45 min. We get there and a girl working their said we are not doing walk ins. So we said we will reserve a spot. She said no we are closing at 6:30 since the guy coming in for night shift is sick. There were 2 other couples walking in at same time. Turned them away too. On a Friday night. So highly disappointed to tell my kids the place is closing because they are poorly managed.

Greta W.

Yelp
We had such a great time. JT was our coach and he was amazing! He taught us to throw, left us alone but visited to help and coach us on what we were doing to make us more successful. Fun atmosphere, laid back. Everyone there seemed to be having a wonderful time.

Christine K.

Yelp
Came here to kick off the beginning of the school year with some teacher friends et al. Never did axe-throwing so I had no clue what to expect. This is easily the most fun I've EVER had. We reserved a lane for about eight of us. $40 per person for two hours of throwing was more than reasonable, especially considering it costs about the same as some bowling places but is far more exciting. Our friend also had a birthday recently, and since we were in a large group he got in for free! Betsy was wonderful! She was patient and gave us the rules for safety clearly and concisely. She then took some time to explain the two different kinds of axes and the different ways to throw them. We spent the first 15 minutes of our two hour block practicing and getting tips on how to stand, how to position our arms, and how to throw with more consistency. And then we played some games! We played two games of (their version of) Horse and then had enough time to play a knockout game. It was an absolute blast and I'm planning on coming back for my birthday. Well worth the money. The front does sells alcohol, and I believe you can actually have food delivered to the place as well. Be sure to wear close-toe shoes when you come in, and if you're the type of person who gets tired in loud places be sure to bring a set of earplugs. The sound of axes clattering on the floor can get LOUD. Best day ever!

Monique T.

Yelp
Great Family Fun. Very knowledgeable instructors. Location was perfect also! I'll be back for sure!

Kristin F.

Yelp
Absolute TERRIBLE customer service. Make sure you read the fine print!!! Lots of hidden things in there prior to booking! Staff was not helpful at all either! Do not recommend!

Yousi F.

Yelp
love this place! the staff is friendly and fun, the room is happy and bright, and throwing axes is such a stress reliever! also, super shout out to a cool staff who had the patience to take 100 pics of us as we searched for the perfect cute and instagram-able angle. i also like how environmentally conscious the business is, and how they do everything with e-sign, instead of printing out pages no one ever really reads just to sign a waiver.

Cameron B.

Yelp
Fun, loud, fun, difficult, fun, frustrating, fun, friendly staff (go JT), fast learning fun, and, not as dangerous as it might seem. tux way in the back of a massive and sprawling shopping and living Center in northern Virginia, bad Axe is one of the new growing members of the axe throwing fun and bonding experiences growing throughout the region. Unlike in the district, which you can sport cocktails and beer as you practice your overhead tomahawk chop, this location does not sell alcohol or promote food consumption, it's all about throwing the axe and having fun. With plenty of staff on hand to help walk you through the essentials it really comes down to practicing by throwing. over the head dominant hand on the bottom, released with open palms, don't try to flip the risk, it actually comes pretty organic pretty fast. I came here with a couple of friends during their walk in the place was only half crowded when we got there allowing both me and my friend to have our own Lanes. We spent about 40 minutes perfecting both the two hand and the one hand throw, and it actually started to come pretty easily towards the end. As the day wore on larger parties came in. The staff warned that large group parties do have priority over the lanes so walk-ins should be weary of coming at peak times Friday and Saturday evenings. A lot of fun and actually you break a little bit of a sweat don't be shy and don't be scared.

Bree D.

Yelp
This place was so much fun! Our coach, Josh was amazing! He was so upbeat, friendly and so helpful. It was literally like talking to a friend. This has become my gf & I's new hobby lol don't miss out, go!!!

Renee C.

Yelp
This review is only about the reservation system since we didn't make it there. The walk-in hours are very limited so we had to make a reservation. I selected 6 pm, chose my group size, and was required to prepay for 2 people at $44 each plus tax. After putting in my credit card for $95, the site comes back with a message that "if this reservation is within 48 hours of the reservation time, your time may not be available, and someone will be touch with you by email or phone." About an hour later, I get a call and the young guy says 6 pm is not available. He offered up 4 pm, but that would not work for our group. When I asked if my money would be refunded, he said it will be 'within 5-7 days'. So, their system allows you to make a reservation, takes your money, then tells you it's not available and can't process a refund for 5-7 days, INSANITY.

Yelp
Wow!!! Where to begin? Showed up and boy was it busy! Even on a Monday night too!!! With covid going on we were surprised to only see 1 employee (Kendal). She greeted my wife and I, informed us about the wait and covid restrictions all friendly and professionally. Then as we waited 30+ mins for our time slot we were astonished by her cleaning, coaching, taking payments, and checking in on us. She then took us to our lanes and we had a blast! It's very rare when you see someone these days so squared away and giving a damn. This young lady deserves this shoutout!!!

emanuel l.

Yelp
It's was fun, definitely would go back, and the trainers were very helpful for being our first time kinda wish they had a bar or food but oh well.

Dana S.

Yelp
I was excited to see an axe throwing place open in Fairfax! I went in to celebrate my birthday with a handful of friends. None of us have tried axe throwing before so we were excited for a challenge. We were partnered up with a coach who showed us the ropes. About an hour into our scheduled 2 hour session the fire alarm started to go off. A worker made a comment about how this had happened previously so we figured we would be allowed back in soon. After about 20 minutes of waiting outside, our coach came and told us we needed to pay for our session and we would be receiving $5 off for missing an hour (we paid $47 for 2 hours). I know this place can't control emergencies but $5 off for missing a whole hour is a huge rip off. If I were to go axe throwing again, I'd look elsewhere. Again, no one can prevent this stuff but the fact that a worker made a comment about it happening previously and the lack of a true discount it just isn't a place I'm comfortable going back to.

Brandy S.

Yelp
Absolutely loved it! Our instructor (Sam) was wonderful. He was patient and fun and I'm so glad he was our instructor! I would recommend this place to anyone and I was put at ease when I saw that the place looked liKe a respectable establishment

Kevin M.

Yelp
Tried calling ahead and was told that the wait wasn't bad. Upon showing up was barely greeted and the customer service could use a little work. They only do reservations for 6 and more, which is frustrating. Looks to be understaffed, which explains why they seem a bit slow. Overall a cool concept and fun experience. Heard many great things about axe throwing, they probably needs help managing this location.

Jill W.

Yelp
This was a great, fun way to celebrate a friend's birthday. We booked a party, there were 9 of us, but only 8 actually throwing, and they didn't charge for the person who didn't throw or the birthday girl. We had a dedicated coach for the full 2 hours (Kendal), who taught us how to throw (well, she tried her best!) and had us play some games to keep things interesting. They don't offer any food or drinks, but you can bring in anything you want except alcohol. Things are a bit chaotic in the lobby when you come in, but once we got into the lanes it was fantastic!
