"Baes opened in November of 2019, right ahead of the pandemic. Despite the conditions, Suh and Camden went on to open four Baes locations around the city, including a spot in Portland’s Moda Center. The restaurant’s newest location, within one of Suh’s Alberta Street buildings, is its biggest endeavor yet, with brunch dishes like chicken fried steak waffles, maple-bacon biscuits, and deviled eggs with smoked trout caviar." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"Baes Fried Chicken — the counter service spot from Micah Camden of Blue Star, Super Deluxe, and Boxer Ramen — opened in Old Town in November, and it does not disappoint. The sandwich can be ordered traditional or hot, has crisp breading and tender white meat, and comes with house pickles and aioli on a toasted bun. The hot chicken, in particular, is peppery with balanced smokiness." - Nick Woo

The place is very relaxing and beautiful, staff was very helpful since it was our first time there. The mac and cheese was very delicious, but the chicken was awful, not cook all the way. After reading other reviews looks like it’s not the first time they serve uncook, bloody chicken.

I love Bae’s chicken! The split breast, chicken sandwich and mashed potatoes are my favorite menu items! Also don’t skip the fry sauce it’s delicious! I like the regular chicken more than the spicy version!

SerpAPI
Absolutely bonkers good chicken. Simple recipes, accomplished wonderfully, cooked perfectly, sized just right. The chicken is juicy and tender, the frying is frymazing. The staff is friendly and quick (with amazing reflexes... the wonderfully nice lady bringing me my order somehow managed to help catch me when I tripped on the stair from the patio avoiding what would have been an embarrassing self induced curb check.... ALL WHILE NEVER DROPPING MY MEAL. I suspect they may all be benevolent alien super beings who just enjoy making fried chicken), the prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity and the decor and design is fantastic. Go eat some bird.

The crew got our order correct. However, the chicken was over seasoned and over cooked to the point of burning. Complained and they gave us a second piece burnt worse than the first piece. Do not support businesses that treat their customers badly!

I wanted to try this place out because i heard good things about it. I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich and mac and cheese. I took my first bite of the chicken sandwich and it was okay, i went to take a few more bites and thats when i saw that the inside was completely raw. At first i thought it was breading or something but it was definitely mushy raw-ness when i went to investigate lol. The mac n cheese also just tasted like a box of lean cuisine i used to eat all the time so it wasn’t bad but definitely not the best if you’re paying 7 dollars for it. Just disappointed that i paid 14 dollars (i ordered on uber eats) for a raw nasty sandwich.

Agnes Majeed

SerpAPI
The chicken was chewy, the mashed potatoes were lumpy, missed seasoning but the most disgusting thing was the veggie based “gravy”. It looked and tasted nasty. They don’t know the concept of gravy making; it’s definitely not mashed vegetable based. Yuck! It’s also pretty pricey for the quality of food. Not recommended.

This is a really nice fried chicken spot. They have a great atmosphere and staff. The chicken sandwich and chicken and waffles were great. We don’t have many fried chicken spots in the city and this one is really worth a visit.

Not the hot chicken I was expecting The seating and staff was nice. Place was clean. The chicken was so thick and lacked any flavor on the inside. I was really disappointed. It would be better if the breast wasnt 2 inches thick and or it was brined so salt would be incorporated in the meat. I tried getting a sauce to help flavor it but it was some jam like dip that made it worst. My friends really liked it but that because they never had hot fried chicken before.

Selius P.

Yelp
Great lemon pepper flavor and light crunchy breading. Waffle fries were nice and crispy. I ordered in a group, so it took a while to get the food, but the service was good. The seating was comfortable, and the lighting was nice. My favorite part was the comeback sauce. It was sweet, but tangy, and was the perfect consistency. Leftovers were fine, but got a bit soggy. The strawberry slushy was also yummy. If you're looking for a delicious fried chicken place in old town, be sure to check out baes.

Yelp
First off, the busy-ness of the place is misleading (they weren't busy, my group of about 9 people (6 adults, 3 children) pretty much was the crowd when we came here for the late afternoon. But the food and service was amazing. Our counter attendant was very attentive to our mission, which was to eat through Portland, so he gave us various options to try their chicken. Even went above and beyond to ensure we tried everything. The wings were nice and crispy and juicy. Chicken tenders were flavorful. Waffle fries were seasoned! All the sides they gave us the option to try were great too! The drinks were strong according to my friend, they had a pretty heavy pour and that's not a bad thing. The kids enjoyed their frozen strawberry try lemonades. Flavors to try for their sauces: Butter honey Lemon pepper Their Nashville hot (not too spicy, a good kick though) Try the fries and the mac and cheese, as your sides Glad to see the pickles as a side too, nice way to cut down the heaviness of the fried chicken. Can't wait to come back to BAES!

Yelp
I was looking forward to a good meal during our visit in portland.... but bae's fried chicken fell short. my mother is a friend chicken connoisseur and we both ordered the wings. hubby got a chicken sandwich. the flavor of the chicken was good, but bite too deep into the brunette and get met with undercooked ick! We returned the batch and ordered a new one, only to experience the same thing. The flats were cooked through, but the large drummers were not. We were told it was due to the chickens being young. (I have never heard of this.... and could not find anything g during my thorough google search about cooking young chickens - it seems this was a narrative they were trying to push, but i could not find a reputable source to back it up....) Moreover, I didn't find the staff particularly helpful or friendly. Needless to say, We won't be returning because under cooked chicken in' t really my thing. Sandwiches might be ok..... use caution when ordering the wings.

Yelp
We visited Bae's Fried Chicken at Moda Center this last weekend during the NCAA Women's Regional Tournament. I have had Bae's on my list for some time and I was thrilled to find one located at the Moda Center. The food was phenomenal and the service was as good as well. It was very hectic, but the host was so gracious and took her time describing the options for chicken flavors. For the first time visiting Bae's I opted for the classic flavor in a chicken tender basket. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the waffle fries were hot and crispy. The sauce I selected was the comeback sauce...so good. And of course it was all washed down with the Portland staple of Widmer Hefeweizen. I definitely will visit the actual restaurant when I am able to.

Randall F.

Yelp
3 stars because the food is still decent. 3 stars also because this is no longer a proper fried chicken place. Now, you can only get tenders, wings, or a sandwich. No more half or full bird, which means no breasts, thighs, or drumsticks. What you're left with is an elevated Dave's Hot Chicken. Which I guess ain't the worst thing. But go get a three piece at Reel 'em Inn Tavern on Division if you want real fried chicken.

Mike A.

Yelp
Portland boasts a robust and diverse restaurant scene. If you're a local or just in town for a visit and your palette is screaming for soul food, then I'd suggest stopping into Bae's for some fried chicken! They have a simple straightforward menu of fried chicken options that can be paired with traditional soul food options (e.g. mac and cheese), waffles, or made into a sandwich. We shared the fried chicken sandwich topped with honey butter dressing and a side of waffle fries. The "Comeback" dipping sauce (i.e, mayo & ketchup) was tasty and could've used a bit of a spicy kick. The chicken was fried well and crispy, but not dried out. Would definitely recommend and go back for more!

Mia H.

Yelp
Came here when I was in the area looking for a quick bite and it wasn't bad! The inside of the restaurant separates the kitchen/pay area with the dining area, and I kind of like it. The space is abundant and there's lots of seating, decor is also super cute and I love how simple it is. Their menu has quite a few options as to how you can eat your chicken with different flavors too! I went with the honey butter, and the sauce on the bun was heavenly. Although I didn't get to try much, this seems like a pretty solid spot and if I had a bigger appetite, I would definitely come back to give it another try!

Yelp
I was really excited to come to Bae's to get some Nashville hot chicken . I ordered the strip meal and asked for one of each: hot, honey butter, and traditional along with a beer. I got the "come back" sauce (fry sauce) and the spicy peach sauce but I was really hoping the chicken would be so flavorful I wouldn't need them. I was the only one in the restaurant so the chicken arrived pretty quickly. The strips were juicy and the waffle fries well seasoned. Unfortunately, I used the sauces. I did like the chicken, but I couldn't discern the difference in flavor between any of them other than a super salty one. I wouldn't have bothered eating here for just regular fried chicken. There are too many great restaurants to try in Portland. My advice for the owner-- bring on the heat! If we order a dish labeled "hot chicken", we ought to know what we are getting into.

Paul L.

Yelp
Really good chicken, menu is easy to navigate, and the people have always been friendly. I have always been able to find seating and it's a chill place inside. I really liked their sides, especially the greens - highly recommend.

Chantel T.

Yelp
Very large, open space that is great for chilling + watching a game! The staff is pretty nice as well. Unfortunately, what lacks here is what's supposed to be the star of the show -- the chicken. I got the strips and sadly they were very dry. The signature sauce that they have was good, but it wasn't enough to make up for the dryness of the chicken. Maybe some wings with sauce would be better than the strips? The waffle fries were very good, though. Not sure if I'd come back to try other things because of the strips. :(

Daniel W.

Yelp
Great vibes and great food! I got the wings which I really enjoyed it. They also got the lemonade with whiskey and said that was amazing.

Matt S.

Yelp
I was incredibly excited to try this place however it was a little disappointing on several fronts. My friends and I went there and it was not busy however the service incredibly disappointing. The person helping us was rude and short. I understand that everyone has bad days and sometimes you just don't want to be at work but taking it out on customers isn't right. Everyone in my group has worked (or still works) in food service so we still stayed and ordered. We got the family meal with mashed potatoes, corn, mac and cheese, slaw. The food was okay however the chicken - which is what I was most looking forward to - was WAY overcooked; it was past dry it was just straight up burned. This place isn't exactly cheap, I think our meal was close to $60. For fear that our server would kill us we didn't end up saying anything or sending it back but it was just an overall poor experience. I will say the ambiance was cool and it's an awesome big open space but yeah just overall not a great experience for our group unfortunately.

Arun S.

Yelp
Hot chicken is indeed fire here. Recommend going for chicken (not the sandwich) unless you really want bun to fill up. Chicken is juicy and delicious. Quick service and enough seating space to go with as well.

Nathaniel J B.

Yelp
Great layout and many locations to choose from but consistently great food no matter where!!! Love the sauce options but especially love the simple thin layer of batter!! Good chicken y'all but not sure about sides yet but to be continued....Only came in for quick bite wing week!!

Ipectl D.

Yelp
I ordered the lemon pepper wings and enjoyed them. I will say, I didn't expect it to be doused with honey and it caught me very off guard. It made the wings very sweet and I couldn't really taste the lemon pepper which was a bit sad. Mainly giving it 3 stars because the prices were elite ($10) for six big wings which is pretty hard to find in this economy. The chicken was well cooked, I got my order incredibly quickly, and overall it had a very good crunch to it. I just wished they'd leave the honey (or at least minimize it) when making it.

Marcia R.

Yelp
Amazing! Did you know fried chicken goes well with champagne? Amazing chicken. Homemade hot sauce! Killer service. Parking was easy. Go. Eat. This. Chicken.

Ron D.

Yelp
This place was great chicken nice and juicy and sauce was amazing house ranch and Spicy Peace the whole place was super friendly and great .

Juan S.

Yelp
Stopped by here randomly one day because I was close. I had heard of it once or twice but I have so many chicken places to try, it had gotten lost in my list. However, their menu is decent with some pretty good items and I ordered the wings and the chicken sandwich for my girlfriend. The wings are legit: huge, perfectly cooked, and seasoned well. They come with a side of pickles but nothing else which is a bit disappointing. However, the chicken sandwich I got in Honey Butter style and for $13 I think it should come with fries or something on the side to make it worth it. I didn't try the sandwich personally, but my girlfriend said it's one of the best she's ever had so it must be pretty good. Overall, it's a cute place with good food but a bit overpriced, not because of quality, but because of quantity.

Matthew H.

Yelp
First off... Chicken and waffles. You need this in your life and the staff is friendly too! And it's right next to the best cinnamon rolls in town!

Sonja P.

Yelp
I was on my way somewhere and just saw their "fried chicken" sign. I love fried chicken! I just had to try this place. I wasn't really hungry either, but I finished that 3 piece. It was really good. And I usually don't eat the slice of bread but it was toasted and buttery. Service was friendly and nice open setting.

Dao M.

Yelp
Very fast service. Chicken was salty greasy and tough , my thoughts were raw both pieces not a good time .mash potatoes was very buttery I didn't like the grave at all.

Angel P.

Yelp
first time at Bae's & I don't know why it took me so long to try it! I got the Jumbo Chicken Strips with the Honey Butter & a mild seasoning i believe. The sauce/season were both really yummy! the chicken was tender on the inside & perfectly crispy on the outside. the waffle fries were good as well. the House Ranch was not our favorite but the Comeback sauce tasted great either the chicken & fries. it was a cute spot, but there was no AC here so on a hot 85 degree summer day, it was not as enjoyable as it would've been if I wasn't sweaty. the music they were playing was great tho! hip hop & r&b

Brian H.

Yelp
Typical Portland restaurant where you order at the counter and grab your own stuff and tip 20%. The fries and mash potatoes are carrying this chicken. Waffle fries and mash potatoes here are 5/5. The chicken is overwhelmingly dry and lacks lots of flavor. Doesn't help that the chicken is super thick as well so it was really tough.

Sarah T.

Yelp
New favorite spot for fried chicken in Portland. The flavors are the kind of tasty where you can actually taste the flavor, not just a whiff like some other fried chicken flavors. All the chicken stays crispy while still being flavorful. Now, onto the strawberry lemonade with a shot of bourbon. Yum. Yum. Yum. Honestly, have gone back just for the drink. Don't let the location distract ya. There is plenty of parking and the food comes out fast.

Yoshigump ..

Yelp
The best place to have a secret agent meeting. I would kill for the mashed potatoes. Operation fried chicken = success.

Chase M.

Yelp
Came in here for an event a couple months back and it was very good. The price of chicken these days is crazy at stores especially when they don't say where the chickens from so you can only assume there's probably just generic chicken stuff that two bucks a pound the store. So it really is hard for me to pay 10 $12 a pound for it to be fried. With that said it's very in line with all of the pricing of chicken nowadays but there are so many options I'm not gonna go through and name them but there really is. So really and truly pairing this up against the others it comes out ahead, or at least towards the head of the pack, I mean Peck... Or do I Beautiful establishment just amazing it is gorgeous. I really expected it to be a quick counter service, but this is a nice spot to take someone and when you're looking at a sit down prices, this place is a steal.

Kim G.

Yelp
While at Saturday Market, stopped in Bae's because I had to have one of their biscuits! Yes, the biscuit. I know most people come here for the chicken since that is in the restaurant's name, but I've been to another location and that biscuit is everything! For context, I don't like biscuits! They are typically dry and dense. Not Bae's! Their biscuits have layers and layers of fluffy, tender, buttery goodness and are easily double the height of a traditional biscuit. They are golden colored and the top is crisp. It tasted like a cross between a biscuit and a muffin. Perfection! The chicken, whether you get the plate, a sandwich or tenders, is very juicy and the skin is a deep bronze color and flavorful. The butter sauce is slightly sweet and fantastic. Not a big fan of their mashed potatoes - too salty. Or the mac&cheese which needs salt. These two need to be tweaked and balanced out! The greens are delicious! That's my choice for a side along with the crispy waffle fries. Or if I'm doing the brunch thing, it's chicken & waffles for the win. Not in the best location, but if I'm already on the waterfront to see the Cherry Blossoms or I am at the Saturday Market, I'll stop in. Prefer the NE Alberta location for a sit down meal.

Paul K.

Yelp
Ay bae bae! Wonderful fried chicken. I got the chicken strips and waffle fries with peach sauce and cheese sauce. Wowzers. Flavorful and powerful. The chicken was not too dry, so I think it had a good mix of crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Unfortunately, the fries were a bit too crispy for my taste, but that might have been my batch. Not much to say, but the chicken and waffle is only on the weekends, so make sure to come out for brunch time.

Tiarah G.

Yelp
Theres so many reviews about this place and I cannot see why anyone would say one thing bad about this place! Ive made it a tradition to come after the Saturday market and i love it more every time! Wonderful customer service And i have a Name basis with a few workers! Love the Food, it tastes amazing perfectly moist as well. The place is beautiful and open as well. I would 1000% Recommend!!

Chris G.

Yelp
With Portland reaching 105°, eating at home wasn't appealing. Upon the recommendation of friends, we tied Bae's Fried Chicken. Definitely a family favorite and we're sure to be back soon. Service was great, food even better, and we had the restaurant to ourselves.

Y V.

Yelp
Late night chicken spot. Hot, fresh, one of the best fried chickens I've had in the country, and I've tried it all over. Fast service and right next to hotels.

Allie L.

Yelp
Always on the search for amazing fried chicken. This place did not disappoint! So good! Will be back!

Henry L.

Yelp
BEST Boneless Fried Chicken in Town, NO . The Sandwich is still my Favorite thing on the menu (Especially the Honey Butter) but the Strips were also amazing, so were the Sauces. Comeback is probably my Favorite but the ranch and peach are also really good. If you like Southern Chicken Sandwiches get yourself one of them, They are to die for and the Meat and Breading is perfect every time. Also the XXX strips are absolutely amazing if you love Spicy; Literally had me sweating a tsunami. Try this place NOW if you love chicken.

Melinda G.

Yelp
Pretty decent, my granddaughter really wanted fried chicken you hold on a stick and eat (her description of drumstick). We decided to try Bae's. Now I'm not the best fried chicken cook, but I do know when it's overly fried. She had the waffle and 3 fried chicken pieces (leg, thigh, wing). These were so overcooked (blackened in areas and dry). But the waffle was phenomenal. I had the sautéed greens which were fabulous and 2 chicken strips. Agin, overcooked and dry. I would come back for the greens in a heartbeat and the waffles were great, but the chicken....not so much. Customer service was good and prices are fair. Open seating without any real table privacy, so would be great for large groups.

Shannon M.

Yelp
The chicken and waffles are good, unfortunately the 4pc wings were undercooked so we asked for a redo and still got undercooked wings... idk the guy that works there says he eats chicken like this every morning ... step right up folks and get your salmonella

Jocelyne B.

Yelp
Tried for the first time tonight and it was very underwhelming. Chicken was under cooked, gravy tasted different from others I have tasted (not my favorite), Mac and cheese was only okay and mashed potatoes were only okay.

Sal H.

Yelp
Tasted like it was fried in old oil. Maybe it was just a bad day, because I've heard raving reviews about this place. I wasn't impressed

Geoff V.

Yelp
What a shame, this once fabulous chicken restaurant is clearly soon to go the way of the DoDo bird. Tonight, as we attempted to support one of their remaining locations, they upsold us on doing something that wasn't on the menu and made us feel like they were giving us something special (2 different flavors of wings on a 12 piece order), so we tipped them more than the amount it would have cost to get 2 orders of 6. When our order came out, they only gave us 6 traditional, but since the counter person had gone on break/left for the day, the remaining staff refused to honor what we paid for - customer service in Portland is dead and so, unfortunately soon Bae's probably will be, too.

Christina R.

Yelp
OMG this hidden gem is delicious. I am definitely coming back here more. Ambiance was cute, service was good and food was legit!

Tamara C.

Yelp
This is bona fide fried chicken y'all. I placed my order through Grubhub. Thé Grubhub delivery guy Paulo was a total dick. He called me once and when I didn't get to the phone in time, instead of calling me back like a normal driver would do, he just left my order out on the sidewalk, easy enough for some homeless to steal and get cold. After waiting and returning the missed call without any answer, I checked the Grubhub app, that's how I found out my order was just abandoned. Luckily my neighbor Wes texted me and when he found out that was my order sitting outside, he brought it up for me. I was glad that the chicken was still hot. The waffle fries, not so much and that's not the fault of the restaurant. I ordered the chicken strips. There were 3 very large chicken strips with the spicy peach and the honey mustard dipping sauces. The chicken had a good crunch and a little spice to it and was very tender and juicy inside. Exactly what one should expect from chicken strips. They were also quite large. I didn't even touch the fries and still I could only eat one of those mammoth strips at one sitting. I noticed the address is downtown. I sent them an email on Yelp asking if they have indoor seating. If so I'd like to visit the restaurant. I'm awaiting their response. 2022 - Review # 6

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
I was disappointed with their hot chicken sandwich, would've wanted it to be a little spicier. Also I think they should make their own lemonade, that would add a lot more to the experience. was juicy tho.

Adam C.

Yelp
This place used to be great. They have changed their menu multiple times. I ordered from here 2-3 times a week but the menu is not really appealing anymore. If it brings back the menu with legs and thighs on toast spicy I may order again. The menu was good. Now it's like hot wings and chicken strips. There are BBQ places I go to more now that have more of a southern taste. I wont mention the other place's name. But hoping Baes makes a 180 back to the old menu.

Darren Y.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place for a while. Got the non-spicy chicken tenders and cole slaw to go with ranch and honey mustard The good- Portions were huge. Dinosaur sized tenders and a big basket of waffle fries. Stretched this for 3 meals and leftovers stayed crispy Chicken had decent seasoning and went well w honey mustard The meh A bit pricey. Cole slaw was fine. Ranch was really rich.

Simon W.

Yelp
It's very rare I go to a place that I can't find a single criticism for, but if any restaurant deserves a 100% 5 star review it's this one. Absolutely everything was perfect. The atmosphere and decor is unique but trendy and full of character, and the staff is very friendly. They have multiple seating areas and a covered and heated outdoor patio. But let's talk about the chicken. Their Nashville Hot chicken sandwich is relatively cheap at $13 but would well be worth $20 because it was absolute perfection. Literally I can't find a single thing wrong with it, a single addition I would make, or a single change. The chicken was moist with an extra crispy outside, covered in a delicious Nashville hot sauce that was just the right amount of greasy. Artisan buns, just enough house made aioli, and plenty of thick cut pickles. The hot sauce that also appears to be homemade was fantastic and I drenched my sandwich in it. If I lived here I'm pretty sure I would be eating this weekly. If you have the chance, don't pass it up!!!

Evelyn C.

Yelp
My husband had added on list of place to try.....coincidentally we were walking by and decided to try, no regrets!

John T.

Yelp
Hands down, Bae's chicken wings are the epitome of flavor perfection! I've been on a quest for the ultimate wings, and Bae's has exceeded every expectation. The first bite was a burst of savory goodness--crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, with a delightful balance of spices that danced on my taste buds. Each wing was generously coated in their signature sauce, a tantalizing blend that struck the perfect harmony between tangy and spicy. The portion size was fantastic, leaving me feeling fully satisfied. The service was impeccable, adding to the overall delightful experience. Bae's has undoubtedly become my go-to spot for the most incredible chicken wings in town. Highly recommended for any wing enthusiast out there!

Pedro H.

Yelp
Damn good chicken!!!! I love that the menu is small with what they do well! The wings we amazing! The chicken sandwich was super flavorful and juicy! Ambiance was pleasant, not overly decorated, but nice to be in. It felt like I was in someone's kitchen. Service was great! Will definitely be back!!!

Chris G.

Yelp
I stopped by here while in town after seeing some reviews on yelp and was feeling like some chicken so decided to get the regular chicken strip meal and the Nashville hot chicken strip meal , Both were good but I definitely prefer the regular ones . Also the fries were waffle fries and were very good , They do free quite a few sauces and I tried most of them I would say the fry sauce was my favorite . Overall the service was quick friendly and seemed very clean inside. Definitely a spot I would try again when in the area.

Marina P.

Yelp
Ahhhh what to say about this place? This place looked so promising to my friend and I from all the Instagram reels and Tik Tok's. But we were honestly so disappointed with how salty the chicken was. We ordered the chicken sandwich with honey butter and it was probably the most decent thing we had chicken wise. Chicken was still juicy and had just the right amount of crunch. My friend got the three piece with the Nashville Hot flavor. Seasoning just felt dry and salty. Service was nice, the gentleman who took our order was very informative and hooked it up with the sauces!

Jesus R.

Yelp
Staff - Great Prices - Great Chicken - Amazing Sauce - Amazing Waffle Fries - Ehhh Mac n Cheese - Not a fan Mash Potatoes & Gravy - Decent The chicken is worth the hype . I have no clue how they do it . But every single bit of their chicken is to die for
