Best Bagels in New York City, According to Eater Editors | Eater NY

"This hopping spot on Father Demo Square in the Village is something of a well-kept secret if you don’t live in the neighborhood. The luscious display of bagels seen through the open front doors ought to be a lure, but most of the trade is in people clad in business attire on the way to the West Fourth Street subway station in the morning." - Robert Sietsema

Google
Amazing toasted bagels, lots of options to choose from. Vegan cream cheese options available as well...

Google
NOT recommended, I ordered one onion and one everything bagel with lox spreads on both, the bagels were not fresh that is not daily made. It was left probably over from yesterday. It burned my friends and my stomachs all day. It seems that lox is not fresh as well!

Google
Best bagels in New York, hands down! Had a bagel with pastrami salmon, cream cheese, capers and tomatoes. Too good!!

Neha Vl

Google
The bagels from this restaurant are amazing! Everything bagel with cream cheese or tofu cheese is our favourite. There is very limited seating here so we love to go to the park across the street and have the bagel.

Google
Very good bagels and spreads. Nice breakfast menu that even has burritos! Great customer service and fair prices. Very solid place. Update: Had a BEC on toasted roll today that was so good. Starting to warm up to this place.

Anne Hathaway did not spit in my food.

Google
Is a bagel 🥯 w/ cream cheese a viable substitute for pizza? Yes, especially when you realize it's cash-only at the over-hyped Joe's Pizza next door. Veggie cream cheese on a poppy bagel is a refreshing combination. Sorry for not including a picture; I think a tourist seeking directions to Washington Square interrupted me before I took the shot.

Google
So back in the day, that being 1983-84, I used to live across the road on Minetta St in a room off the landlord's apartment, which came with a bed a fridge and a kettle and that was it. So a bagel & cream cheese at this place became my morning filler until lunchtime. Great to see its still going strong, assuming the same crew? They should give lessons to the 'get-rich-quick' crowd on business longevity in addition, if y'ask me! Back home in Dublin, Ireland, I have searched for anything resembling my beloved onion bagels in vain; nothing comes close :-(

Google
good bagels but not the best in the city. cheapest i’ve found for bagel and schmear. got my classic egg everything with tofu cream cheese - bagel was doughy but not crispy enough and cream cheese wasn’t as smooth as i like. still a quality bagel but not my top.

Yelp
Went to NyC over memorial weekend and of course each time I come to New York I must have my fix My fix? A bagel with all the stuff inside or in this case they called it a full house! You know cream cheese, lox, tomato, onions and capers on a plain yes plain toasted bagel and bam I'm in heaven Place was steadily busy even later in the morning and the guys were all friendly including I think the owner maybe who took my order they have things running like a well oiled machine It's small which is typical but clean Best part is that you can go across the street to this small park and enjoy your food on a bench all while people watching lol

Yelp
**Disappointing Bagel Experience** I was eager to try this bagel spot, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. The bagels were quite dense and chewy, lacking the light, airy texture you'd hope for. The lox was barely noticeable and didn't add much flavor. We tried the vegan tofu cream cheese, but it tasted like pure oil and was quite unappetizing. My wife, who loves tofu but isn't a fan of cream cheese, gave it a shot and took one bite before passing it back to me. I ended up eating it just to avoid wasting food, but it wasn't enjoyable. In contrast, I picked up a plain toasted bagel from a local corner market for just $1.50, and my wife loved it. The deli staff even questioned why I was ordering a bagel with nothing in it, to which I just said it was for a kid. Overall, this place didn't meet our expectations, and we won't be coming back.

Yelp
Nice place for a bagel sandwich. I got the bagel with egg, cheese and sausage and my bf got the same except with bacon. It was fast and easy to get it ordered. Then we took it outside and sat in the park across the street. I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
These were very sub par bagels, bagels that do not really deserve to occupy real estate in New York City. The bagels themselves were flavorless, and had the texture of bread. The inside of the store is very no frills, very much like a deli counter. The staff were really nice, but I wouldn't say this is a cute or charming spot by any means.

Yelp
UGH! I'll get right to it. No beating around the bush here. Bagels sucked. Can I say sucked and not violated TOS? I started with an everything with cream cheese, I ordered it un-toasted cause that's the way you can truly evaluate a bagel. Toasting hides so many flaws. The bagel was or at least seemed to be stale. Hard and very difficult to chew. Yeah, that bad. Just to make sure, I went back and got a poppy with butter. Double ugh!! Barely any butter. Either they have lousy fresh bagels or they sell yesterday's leftovers. I won't even go into service(ok) or ambience (also ok) Definitely not recommended. Watch my video review on instagram @bagelmavennyc

Yelp
Meh... It did seem like my cinnamon raisin bagel was a leeeeetale stale. Definitely didn't seem like it was made that morning, when I walked in at 10:30am on a Sunday. $1.64 Wouldn't be my first choice.

Yelp
Several times a year, I bring people to New York to experience the city. I always include a stop at Bagels on the Square because you need a true New York bagel experience, and this is a great place to get one. The staff is great. If I'm there with one friend, we get great service - same as when I bring 20. If you're unsure, ask them what bagel is freshest and what they suggest with it, and they'll help you out. When you walk in, you see all the fresh bagels in bins and the amazing cream cheese options in the case - there are other sandwiches and stuff, but I only have eyes for the bagels and cream cheese. My favorites are everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and cinnamon raisin bagel with walnut cream cheese.

Yelp
We hadn't planned on stopping at Bagels on the Square, but when our first choice, Joe's Pizza, didn't have any slices ready, we decided to make a detour next door. It was around 10am when we walked in, and it wasn't crowded at all. There were several staff members ready to take our orders, and the menu had so many options to choose from. I have to admit, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the variety of cream cheese flavors. I know it's a New York thing, but it was new to me. Eventually, I settled on a plain bagel with scallion bacon cream cheese. The price seemed reasonable, and my order was ready in no time. We decided to take our bagels to go and found a park bench across the street to enjoy our breakfast. The bagel was tasty, but I have to say, it had a ton of extra cream cheese. I ended up wiping some of it off. I also think I could've made a better choice of cream cheese, because the flavor was just okay. It was good, but just not great.

Yelp
Ask any New Yorker for the best bagel spot and it will always be the local joint closest to them. (Yes, H&H Bagels are good, but no way in heck am I going more than 5 blocks from my house when the bagel craving calls). Bagel on the Square is the best bagel spot in Greenwich Village. My go-to order: everything bagel, not toasted, jalapeño cream cheese with a slice of tomato and onion. (Perfection!) The online ordering system is a pain to use, so I always call in my order for delivery. Super tasty. Super fast. There are trendy $8 bagels in the area, which do not hold a candle to these.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a bagel at Bagels on the Square because every other place around seems to be a pizza shop! The bagels are freshly made and they are constantly putting out new ones. We got the plain bagel with lox spread ($4.95). They filled the bagel with the perfect amount of cream cheese. It was not overly salty, and was extremely satisfying. The bagel was well toasted. Service was fast!
google avatar

Rebecca P.

Yelp
I would give a 3.5 for this place. It's not the best but it's decent. I come here often since I live so close and the prices are fine. A plain bagel with lox spread and tomato just under $6 but when my friend got an almost $9 bacon egg and cheese, I thought that was pushing it. Make sure you emphasize "toasted" when you're ordering. I've asked for it a couple times before and they usually forget to. The guys making the bagels are really nice and there are two girls who ring you up. One is nice and the other is kinda rude. Overall it's a pretty good place.
google avatar

Pete M.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed a bagel here... right next to Joe's so I can grab a slice as well.... I prefer the basic poppy with cream cheese, my wife gets the tofu scallion. Friendly people and quick service!

Michelle A.

Yelp
I've been a regular here for quite some time, and I can confidently say they serve the best bagels in the area. My go-to order is a toasted sesame bagel with plain cream cheese, paired with an iced coffee with sugar and milk. I've never once been disappointed. The bagels are always incredibly fresh, soft, and chewy, with a perfect crunch when toasted. I've also tried their plain bagel with butter, which never fails to make my day. The seating by the window is a delightful spot, with two comfortable chairs that are perfect for sitting and people-watching while enjoying your breakfast. The place is always spotless, which adds to the overall enjoyment. The staff here are exceptional--kind, friendly, and welcoming. Over time, they've come to know my preferences and always prepare my order just the way I like it. I appreciate their warm smiles and the genuine care they put into every interaction. If you're in the West Village, don't miss out on this gem!
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
If you want a bagel in the West Village at an obnoxiously early time of the day, this is it. It's weird how so many negative reviews say that there are plenty of alternatives. 7AM on a Saturday morning--go! Yep, you're going to Bagels on the Square. Reasonable prices and fast service.
google avatar

Ross C.

Yelp
a solid bacon egg and cheese sandwich and tunafish sandwich. I had both on onion bagels that were the perfect temperature and consistency: just the right amount of bite for the chew. Tompkins Square is across Carmine St too for some munching with the pigeons on a nice little park bench! Service is quick; it's a modest establishment, yet all the best ones are!
google avatar

Citlali A.

Yelp
This is a solid spot, a little tricky to order from if you've never been because it's not totally clear where to order from, but the basic bagels are good and worth it! The bagels themselves are fluffy and delicious; if you're able to get them fresh don't toast them, they're really good. Otherwise toastes is the way to go. Some of the sandwich bagels are a bit overpriced, but overall a worthy spot.

Yelp
If you dont have a baconeggandcheese ( yes one word) while you're in NYC did you even visit bro? And if you are downtown at NYU, or stopping over at the washington square arch i HIGHLY suggest you prance on over to Bagels on the Square. Its your typical in and out spot, absolutely no room for seating but thats OK because right across the street is the cutest little park. Inside you're greeted by awesome and friendly staff, fast, and efficient. You can get a wide variety of bagels, bagel sandwiches, and other deli traditions including a BLT, a turkey club and so much more. They also have a ton of cream cheese flavors to choose from, so if you're feeling fiesty i suggest you try their jalapeno spread. The quality of these bagels is amazing and speaking with some locals it hasnt changed in almost 20 years. Nice and clean inside, pricing is your usual NYC price hike but hey you're getting the authentic NY bagel experience. Make sure you stop in!

Yelp
Right next to Joe's Pizza, which I think has the best pizza in the city, so does Bagels on the Square measure up to it? The short answer is... no. Yes, the bagel is crunchy and chewy, yes it is a good size (maybe a tad too small). However, that also seems to be the problem with it. It is basic. Perhaps a little too basic. There is no real flavor to the bagel. It is rather... too plain for a plain bagel. It might as well wear a Gingham dress with flats. That is how ordinary it is. At least it is filled well. I got lox and eggs and each come through nicely, neither one overpowering the other. If you are in Washington Square, and you are torn between Joe's or this place, it is a no brainer, get the pizza.

Yelp
Bagels on the Square reminds me of Bagel Talk on the UWS. It's probably underrated on best-of-NYC lists, as it's clearly a fresh product, just the right size, with a decent crust and enough chew for credibility. I believe it's baked fresh on premises. Like Bagel Talk, all that goodness is somewhat undermined by the fact that it is undersalted (in our view), a situation not helped by the fact that everything bagel seasoning is only sprinkled on top. It's on par with Zucker's, Brooklyn Bagel, better than Bagel Bob's. My last visit was about 6 years ago, so I was pretty thrilled to see this institution still hangin' tough through it all. Neighbor Joe's Pizza has shuttered, as have Rocco's, Stolle, Royce, Keste, and so many other lovely stores and restaurants nearby. Perhaps I'm too senile to remember, but prices are close to what they were when we last lived in the neighborhood and I don't think there's been any change in quality at all. A completely solid option for bagels in NYC. Sandwiches are popular with the many NYU students in the area. The staff have always, in my experience, been nothing short of lovely.
google avatar

Manleen R.

Yelp
This bagel place is located right next to Joe's Pizza (from Spider-man). They have lots of different spreads and bagels to choose from so you're able to customize it according to what YOU want! The staff was so friendly, and fun to talk to! There isn't much seating really inside the restaurant, but there is a comfy, homey vibe. Definitely felt great to support a small business!
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Fave bagels incredible scallion cream cheese. Def a no frills kinda place but great flavor. The everything bagel w scallion cream cheese lives rent free in my head.

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Great and friendly staff, fast service, delicious bagels. Open early too by comparison to the rest of the neighborhood!

Kahlei H.

Yelp
Best bagels in America- seriously! I've had bagels all over the US and BOTS is the absolute best bagel.
google avatar

hakjik l.

Yelp
If you love crispy bagel with soft texture on the inside, this place delivers that. I don't wanna compare, but this is legit and better than another down the block which is more popular.
google avatar

Garima G.

Yelp
Stopped by this bagel store after a walk and I got their everything bagel with veggie cream cheese. - the bagel was small but it was tasty - cream cheese was delicious as well and tasted fresh. The prices are great and it's a great spot in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious bagels with a huge selection of bagels and toppings! The bagels are loaded with lots of deliciousness! Great place!
google avatar

Chelsea M.

Yelp
I grew up around the corner from this place. I have been coming here regularly since I was in middle school (I am now nearly 30), and the quality of these bagels have not changed the entire time. They are always HUGE and fresh, doughy and flavorful. In all the years I've been eating here, I haven't had a single complaint. This place is a true neighborhood classic. The bacon cheddar cream cheese is absolutely to-die-for, and I have yet to find another place that can replicate it. The nearly-one-year period where this place was closed and the neighborhood was uncertain whether or not they would return, was truly awful. If you don't mind a big line on a Saturday or Sunday morning, this place is absolutely worth it. Even if you do mind the line, their Door Dash service is impeccably quick, and they always pay close attention to modifications. What would we do without you, Bagels on the Square?!
google avatar

Melissa O.

Yelp
Perfectly acceptable for NYC. Ingredients were just okay (thick grocery store level cream cheese, cheap lox, bagels middle of the road) but they gave me a massive serving of cream cheese and lox with my everything bagel so I can't really complain too much. Service wasn't very warm but they were super efficient, which I appreciated. Good stop for a midday snack when I was in the area.
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
The bagel itself was decent, maybe a C+. It's hard to mess up a bagel in nyc. We got a bagel with lox, tomato, capers and I'm convinced the cover jar was open and they sprayed for roaches. I really think I just ingested bug spray. The bagel with egg and cheese was passable.
google avatar

Shaji K.

Yelp
Wanted to pick up a few items for the office before heading to work on a Thursday morning. Not too bad of a line but make sure you get your order in fast (as people will jump in). Decided to get a variety of a half-dozen bagels, a side of regular cream cheese, butter, a blueberry muffin, and two coffees (total $19). Had my pastry and coffee at the nearby park as there is no seating inside here. Muffin is your standard fare, a little dry on the inside, better combined with the coffee. Bagels are large and dense, better eaten as halves as it can be a little much too eat the whole thing. I think as your normal bagel place for those who work/live nearby it's fine; wouldn't be a place I'd make a trek out for.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Honestly was a pleasant surprise to find this place. I just got a bagel with special cream cheese and it was less than $4.00. The bagels are fresh and they are generous with the cream cheese! Definitely worth the stop if you're in the area. :)
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Cold hard bagels!! NYC has way better options, anywhere but here. Ordered take away and it was rock hard and ice cold. Not even toasted.

Gab B.

Yelp
omg the onion bagel was amazing. i eould absolutely go here again. it was affordable and they had so many bagel and cream cheese option. go here!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Bottom Line: A great carry-out spot for bagels, cream cheese and Boar's head deli sandwiches. Bagel's on the Square was the closest bagel shop to my SoHo hotel that had at least four stars on Yelp. So, my husband and I jumped on an early morning subway to find fresh bagels. We both had the French toast bagel which was sweet, cinnamon-y and toasty. It was a great way to start the morning. While our bagels were being toasted I eyed up the beautiful display of different flavored cream cheeses. I've never seen such a lovely display of cream cheese. They also had a very, large, fresh piece of brined salmon, better known as lox in a bagel shop, in the case. Also, I always appreciate establishments that carry quality Boar's Head meats and cheeses. For drinks, they have many glass-front refrigerators with many options including water, soda, tea, milk and juice. They also serve coffee. Service was prompt and friendly; however, they did mess up our order. (One bagel was supposed to be toasted without cream cheese but it had cream cheese on it, and we were charged for it.) Not a huge deal but next time I'll be more attentive. There isn't anywhere to sit at Bagels on the Square so plan to take it to go.

Yelp
Pros: - decent size - 5-6 inch/~14 cm diameter bagels - so much cream cheese - you may not even want that much but at least you won't be lacking! - pretty quick if not busy - I've been in and out in under 5 min. Even with at least four orders in front of me, I was out in 10-12 - near a shaded square with benches where you can hang out and eat your bagel in peace - literally around the corner from a west 4th station entrance Tips and things to consider: - standard quality bagels - as in I get bagels from here often and enjoy them, but there are better bagels in New York (e.g. if you only get one chance while you're here, or if you have to go out of your way to get to it) - Lox is probably the most expensive thing here. Expect the bagel to cost ~10, maybe more, but you'll get plenty. If you're a connoisseur, though, just pass. - if you order iced coffee, ask for light ice. It's also best with milk or creamer. I usually drink mine black except when I order it from here All in all, it's a solid place at a great price point if you're in the area. Enjoy!

Leslie L.

Yelp
I got the veggie cream cheese on sesame and it was delicious. The cream cheese was actually loaded with vegetables which I really liked. We ate standing up at a counter near the door since there was no place to dine in but this was not a problem
google avatar

Justin T.

Yelp
They r very slow and special people who don't know how to make food. They also let a homeless man cook my meal
google avatar

Sina F.

Yelp
Super dirty place. You can find better bagels in a 2 mile radius. At best the bagels are a C. I wasn't happy with how dry the bread is and also, the smearing of the sauce all over the bagel.

Katie B.

Yelp
Best bagels in the city! Perfect texture, solid cream cheese options. No frills. Just delicious.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
Not my first choice for a bagel, and definitely not NYCs best bagel, but a decent stop if you're in the neighborhood. Prices are cheap, bagel is decent, and wait is minimal. Bagels are always fresh and they have lots of choices for toppings.
google avatar

Jef B.

Yelp
They promised my spouse twice they'd be open Christmas Day. Then they weren't!! Bad for business...
google avatar

Renato C.

Yelp
Well I've been coming here at least three times a week getting my same sandwich and coffee today I was charged an extra $1.40 for the same order different cashier...... When I question her she says oh I thought you wanted swiss cheese on it which I never asked for and I said no she says well it's my fault and that's it not that she gave me a refund of the extra dollar 40 she just blew it off this is the problem with today . Really disgusted she apologized again when she gave me my bagel egg whites and turkey and coffee 11 70.. The sale will not be coming here again at least not on a Friday really disgusted never told me here let me give you something else or let me refund your money on your card and I'll make it right she gave me a whole story why she couldn't do it well you just lost the customer never come here again.. but that's my opinion you try
google avatar

Anita W.

Yelp
I'm definitely in the minority here but even though I feel that the bagels are well made dough-wise, the seasoning was a bit lacking. I got an everything bagel the few times I've been here and the bits of seasoning on it just didn't taste very flavorful compared to other places. I didn't get that strong onion or garlic kick that I normally would which made it disappointing. The morning rush can get quite busy here but they know how to keep customers moving in and out in an efficient manner. Also the prices are VERY good for the Village area and they don't skimp out on the filling making it a very filling bagel. They have a really wide menu of options that there's something here for everyone.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Bagels breakfast sandwiches were pretty big for the sub $5 price. Bagel had a slight chew. But cheese could be better. The cheddar just didnt have much flavor to it. The everything bagel didnt have a lot of taste to it either. I'm being picky here, but thats only becuase I can since there are so many bagel shops around here. Still good.

Kristen B.

Yelp
Locally recommended to this tourist--great taste & good price! I had the "Everyday" bagel. Other baked goods as well. Cash or card
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
Quick and efficient line. They take cash or card. Have an order ready before getting in line. The lox bagel here costs $12. The bagel was quite solid but the amount of salmon was severely lacking. I'd probably order other bagels with only cream cheese, but not with lox again.
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
When I walked by here sometime last year, I noticed a sign in the window that said they were closed for renovations. I thought, 'ok, cool, looking forward to their re-opening!' Then, months went by and every time I walked by here--at all hours--they were still closed. I was perplexed. This is/was my favorite bagel place in the city. Delicious bagels, a zillion choices, one of the very few that had ~10 flavors of Tofutti (for us non-dairy eaters), nice, efficient folks behind the counter who would remember your exact order. Every.Time. AND, they were cheap (mine always cost $2: everything bagel [not toasted!], plain tofutti, slice of tomato.) I had a routine- get bagel, go get coffee further down the street at Prodigy, go sit in Father Demo Square, watch pigeons and people, scarf down delicious bagel. I really wish they would re-open and I sincerely hope they're not shuttered for good. I hope everyone who works/worked there is OK too. During this pandemic I really miss some semblance of normalcy...
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
I brought a dozen of these bagels to the cast of the off-Broadway musical Addy & Uno and they flipped over them! I've gotten them twice since! Doughy, chewy, fresh, they're delicious and a great deal when you get the dozen with cream cheese. It's the perfect gift to bring to a celebration/party/get-together. Pure satisfaction guaranteed. 5 stars!!!!!!

Yelp
+3: This is my quick-pick-up bagel spot when I'm on my way to read in the park. The staff is always friendly and fun, the wait is nonexistent, and the food is pretty dependable. I usually get the SEC breakfast sandwich or just a regular bagel and scallion cream cheese. Both are great after a night out especially. The price is great (I can get both my go-tos for under $10 if I'm hungry enough) and the guys who work there are even better! -2: In another place, it would be a pretty standard bagel shop. Unfortunately, NY has so much tough bagel competition out there. It's a good neighborhood spot but I wouldn't come out here just for the bagels. There's just nothing "special" about them, nothing "extra" they have over any other bagel spot on any other corner.
