Chicago’s best Middle Eastern restaurants | Eater Chicago

"Baghdad Bakery on Devon Avenue mostly caters to restaurants, but if you go in the morning you can find fresh, warm, pillowy samoon — Iraqi bread baked in a stone oven. Buy this by the bag, along with cheese and spinach pies, flatbread with meat or zaatar, and kahi–phyllo pastry best eaten with honey and popular in Iraqi cafes for breakfast." - Rebecca Holland

This is a family owned business- the brothers who manage this store are very kind and very professional. I had one of them make six Samoons ( I hope I spelt it right) for me and I really appreciated the gesture. One of them explained the ingredients that some of the baked items were made up of. He also told me how he was related to the folks who ran the store in a different location in the same plaza. I enjoyed the conversation. The store was so clean and was so well maintained. Today's encounter with the store owners felt like blessing.

I’ve been shopping here for years and absolutely LOVE their freshly baked bread Iraqi samoon bread. If you love bread, then you’ve GOT to give this a try. It is so fluffy and delicious!! I love buying thing in the grocery section to compliment it like a creamy labneh. Their bread is also a nice break from the norm if you make sandwiches. Just slice the bread open like you would do with pita bread and insert your preferred deli meats, cheeses, and/or condiments. It’s heaven in your mouth.

Best customer service I’ve ever had. I walked in and felt so at home. I smelled that Iraqi bread and I couldn’t wait to try it. They have good high-quality food here to choose from and many different products. One of my favorite is the ALSARAY I love being able to come here and get what I need when I’m on the road. It’s close and convenient and right in town and not far from the highway.

It was our first time trying samoon and it was delicious! I think it was the freshest bread I’ve ever had- practically straight out of the oven. We dipped the bread in both hummus and labneh (similar to cream cheese). We also tried the baklava which was great. The store is welcoming to people of all backgrounds! They accept credit cards ($5 minimum purchase) and had Apple Pay.

We love the handmade bread and desserts here. Mo was so friendly and welcoming and we really enjoyed talking to him. They have lots of interesting imports from across the Middle East.

This place is heaven for all kinds middle eastern people. They offer a lot of different brands, Turkish, Arabic etc. the spice collection is impeccable. The prices are really good. They actually make fresh bread at the store. I’ve never seen that in the u.s before. The bread was so good! It reminded me of so much home that I had a tear in my eye eating in the car. Couldn’t wait until home. We found here completely by accident but I’m so happy we did.
