Can Portland’s Food Carts Survive the City’s Development Boom? | Eater

"Run by an owner who emigrated from Baghdad in 2008, this downtown cart has served mesquite chicken shawarma for years and relied heavily on summer tourist and hotel-driven traffic—a season the owner describes as critical to income—so displacement threatens both earnings and the ability to remain downtown." - Brendan Seibel

Great friendly place I can come here for prices that are reasonable tasty treats I come here for the nuts and dates and great hot sandwiches

I was told this place was a must-try and honestly, was reluctant to go. This place is a carry out only “restaurant” inside a market. Beef shawarma was amazing. Beef kabob is what they are famous for. It was good. Their prices are reasonable too. So far one of my favorite place to get a wrap. The rice and stew were pretty bland. The actual market did kind of steer me away but I tried their food anyway. I can’t speak to the produce of the market because it does not look like a place I would probably ever get anything from.

I came in and bought a few things and a schwarma. Guy at the sandwich counter asked me what I ordered as I walked up. Finished making his current order then talked to other customer who was behind me in line, of his ethnicity, something in their language . Instead of making my 1 sandwich he made this other customers multiple sandwiches and kabobs. I ended up walking away and getting my money back for the sandwich I ordered and leaving. If you are not of their ethnicity be ready to be treated on a lower level.

Great customer service and excellent spot to get a sandwich made to order.

Low prices, variety of products, good customer service and especially from the meat guy.

Google
Restaurant wouldn't accommodate my dietary restriction when I asked for no chicken cream chop because my family member cannot eat fried foods. The response from the blonde haired woman at the counter was "do you see how busy we are" which shows a complete lack of carrying for a customer who wants to support a local business. Will not be back

Just passing through and wanted to try the food. It did not disappoint and it was a fun little experience!

Yelp
I stopped by this place to check it out. To my surprise, they have a take-out restaurant to the right of the entrance. You have to look over menu and then order at the cash register and pay first then they make your food. The price was unbelievable. I tried the falafel sandwich on Iraqi bread. The choice is that or pita. They also had 3 sauces including garlic, ranch or a third I can't remember. I stuck with garlic. It was just $2.99 and such a deal!

Yelp
Staff is friendly. Food is amazing. Store is clean. I love coming here to shop! I highly recommend the bread also!

Yelp
Dirty, disgusting, and no regulated expiration dates on prepared food. Walked in walked out, would not eat anything from here.

Yelp
This is my to go place during my work lunch breaks or when I'm going to have guests over my home. Walking in, as a non-Arabic, there is a language barrier but everyone is friendly. One point for that. One can buy 4 breads for $1 with their to die for hummus for $3 (which is so big, it can last days). Their bread is always hot and fresh. One just cannot go wrong with the bread. I would also get their garlic sauce, but I'm not the biggest fan of it. But nonetheless, you cannot go wrong for $2 garlic dip that can last you days. Their platters are HUGE. For the size party you're buying for (for example, the tray for 5), it basically is doubled with the meat and sides and can easily feed ten people. The meats, rice, side sauces, and turshi are wonderful. One thing I do wish they had was fattoush salad BUT they have an amazing eggplant salad. And all of their fruits/vegetables are at a low cost and the cheeses are cheap as well (cheaper than Kroger or Meijer). I always buy my fontinella cheese here. You just can't go wrong here.

Yelp
I love coming here for the ingredients that the big grocery stores don't carry. Everyone is always helpful when I ask questions. We love the garlic sauce in the refrigerator and the Iraq bread. I could make a meal out of just that! We have only gotten take-out food a few times but it was very good with good portions.

Yelp
If I could give them a - on stars I would give a thousand. The first thing is the guys behind the counter is very (RUDE) and they need to learn how to cook. The I ordered a combo tray for 3 the price was not bad, but as soon as we took one bite I understood why it was not expensive. Worst food ever. It was so dry, every bite had to be swallowed with water like a pill. The rice was the worst rice I have ever experienced in my life. If they offered me a combo tray for 10 for free I would tell them NO. Even there pita bread was ALWFUL. Never ever again I guess you can not judge just because the parking lot is busy and the food smell good, because it is not, do yourself a favor and do not waste your $$ and eat anything else I am sure it would be much more moist even over cooked chicken breast. Very Disappointed Customer!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Very convenient and affordable mom and pop market and restaurant. The produce is usually rancid and old most of the time, but their daily baked Iraqi-style bread is good, affordable way to stretch your meals. Their restaurant isn't open/ready until around noon. Just in time for the morning workers in the area to grab a lunch. They start around 9:30 am and stop after an hour or so if they're slow. But pick up after noon and stop baking at 6 pm everyday.

Yelp
On 7/28/2022, I walked into this Market, at 6:15 pm to get a sandwich. I asked the cook, who's name is Maher, and the only reason I knew that, because the girl behind the cash register called his name, to do something for her. I asked, "What's the fastest sandwich you can fix me?". He replied, "Gus", While he was on his phone, he didn't even bother to look up. I said, "Which one doesn't have garlic, meat or chicken, because I'm allergic to garlic?" He answered, " they both have garlic ". I said, "How about a meat kabob sandwich?". He answered, while he's still on his phone, "Kabob has garlic also ". I replied to him, "no one puts garlic in meat kabob ". He said, "no, we put garlic ". Obviously, he didn't want to fix me anything, he was too busy with his phone, and mind you, I seldom go to that store, or to any Arabic stores, and that's the reason. They have very poor customer service and they don't know how to treat their customers. I'll never step a foot in that store. Thank you

Yelp
Love this store but i took away 1 star because sometimes the employees aren't that friendly lol this is pretty much a one stop shop for your middle eastern groceries or pre cooked foods. You can't beat 4/$1 fresh baked bread, $1.99 falafel sandwiches, etc. Their produce isnt always top quality but the low prices are definitely a big draw for me (got an eggplant for 69 cents yesterday, 3 green peppers for $1, etc.)

Yelp
So yummy! The baba ghanoj is amazing. 5 fresh baked bread for $1. Highly recommend checking out this market if you love Middle Eastern cuisine.

Yelp
I shop at this market often and greeted by the friendly and helpful staff. As soon as you walk in the smell of the delicious food cooking on the grill wafts in the air. Shawarma, rotisserie chicken, falafel... Everything is fresh and and their prices are very, very reasonable. They bake the bread daily so it's always hot and fresh. Yumm.. There are a lot of items packed in the store so you have to look everywhere because you never know what you might find. This store is like a little bit of heaven.

Yelp
Don't listen to the haters. The falafel sandwich here is a steal, folks. I believe it was only $1.49 (it was for sure under $2), and was all-around very fresh and flavorful. It's one of the best deals in the area. It's a good-sized sandwich, and the market's bread is great. If I lived closer I'd be here a lot! Oh, and the service was fine if you ask me.

Yelp
This small market is great for Arabic foods such as fresh foods, baked goods, produce, and dairy products. There is a small kitchen that makes great sandwiches and they have delicious gaimar which pairs perfectly with the fresh bread.

Yelp
The food is really good and It's also affordable and they have good service and I've tried the chicken sandwich for 2.99 and it was the best I've ever had and they have good bread in the morning and have good cashiers but I would enjoy if they had anyone who can understand me but they are good at making the food and I wanna highly recommend you guys go there and try the food there for cheap prize and it's clean and when you walk in you guys could smell the aroma of the Mediterranean food and it will make you guys buy the food I also rated it a five star because I live close to it and if I'm hungry I could just walk for 5 minutes and I would get the chicken shawarma and I would be full and they also stuff the sandwiches with so much food for only 2.99 so I would recommend you guys to try it. And they are also looking to hire someone so make sure to check it out.

Yelp
This place is a joke!!!!!! The people here are so darn rude. I waited by the kitchen to place an order and nobody even acknowledged then another customer walks in and he goes up to her to help her then I asked can I be helped please since I was here first and he looked at me like he was clueless!!!! As soon as I start speaking Arabic then he becomes nice!!!!! What the hell of a garbage place is this with rude ass service!!!!!!!!

Margie D.

Yelp
I been there twice one of their cashier was races , she look at me like i am piece of shit , we ordered food and i went pay for it , i told her what I ordered and I already talked to the man who work in the kitchen , she told me to go and get it which is she could've just ask them what did I order if she doesn't trust me , so i have to go get it and then go back to line again with heavy and hot food in my hand , the person in front of me and of course he was middle eastern he just pay the food and got his food from the kitchen area. So tell me is that fair customer service? Or she was being races? since that happened told my friends not to order food or give them any business at all.

Yelp
I've read the reviews here going on about how these fine people treat non-Arabic speakers. My experience is that their comments are nonsense. I went in one day not knowing what to expect. It's true that service was perfunctory, but hardly rude. That was due to a language barrier. I pointed out what I wanted on the menu (it's bilingual) and received some of the most delicious food in my life. I've been back dozens of times and the staff knows me by face and often make suggestions about trying sauces (ask for mango sauce for your falafel!), and the results have always been stellar. I also have bought trays here- cheap and always more than enough meat, rice and roasted veggies and you only need call 20 minutes ahead). I also buy produce and bread here (it's baked all day) it's amazingly fresh and cheap. I love this place and you will too if you give it an honest chance.

Yelp

Yelp
This is nice small size middle eastern bakery and grocery store, with some hot foods as well. I believe they would like to offer lot more than they do, but their store is not large for that. Despite their limited store size, they offer lots of items at great prices. Definitely a place that can be visited at least once a week. Looking forward to the next opportunity to visit them.

Yelp
The five piece bread that is baked fresh right in the store is just a dollar. Get it hot and it is completely awesome for the price. I only speak English, but they don't really treat me too bad for being a foreigner in their place. I also buy the sliced liver in the freezer section and sometimes the baklava. I don't buy the fruit/vegetables or much of anything else.

Silly S.

Yelp
Love, love, love this place. Not everyone understands English, so don't get offended but they make the BEST bread. The man at the register is always very nice and packs my things for me real nice and he never minds explaining anything to me.

Yelp

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches and bread. Sad that such a good product.....is ruined by clueless and unorganized management system. The customer service is terrible and unreliable. Which is sadly why I can only make this a very occasional stop.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. While I cannot comment on the actual store or the service (DH stops here and gets carry-out for us on his way home), the sandwiches are just amazing. We have had carry-out from here twice so far, and been pleased both time. We have tried the chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, and the kabob sandwich. Each sandwich was filled to the brim with goodies inside and were really flavorful. The price of $2.99 is ridiculously good, the portion is almost too large for lunch (can anyone say food coma??). Last night DH also brought home a tub of garlic spread and the bread that Food M. called "little pillows of heaven" (there could not be a more accurate description!). I was shocked and delighted at the size, price and taste of the bread and the spread was wonderfully garlicky (I have a feeling it will not last long in our house). Next time we hope to try one of their combo platters!

Anastasia G.

Yelp
Customer service was awful. I'm not Arabic and the sales clerk let an Arab woman go before me in line although I was in front of her. Extremely rude workers. Terrible produce!! Overpriced spices. You can find the same spices at other ethnic stores for much cheaper. Hardly any parking. Will not go there again.

Foodie M.

Yelp
We love Baghdad Market and go here frequently to get delicious loaves of fresh-baked pita bread (or little pillows of heaven as I like to call them). This place is a small middle-eastern market, but also sells prepared food and food made to order. To be fair, we don't buy produce or packaged foods, except for the labneh which they have in the refrigerator case. Their falafel is my absolute favorite, and we have tried a lot as we love middle eastern food. So crunchy and tasty. They make great garlic sauce and delicious hummus. Their chicken shwarma is delectable, but I especially love their lamb and chicken skewered and grilled meat. It's ground meat, and I guess you could call it a kebob or maybe kafta - not sure the correct term. They make it right in front of you and package it up with tasty pickled veggies and bread. And the prices are very affordable. Sometimes there can be communication problems with the staff because some speak no or little English, but they have been very accommodating. Once I was 50 cents short and they said no problem, just pay us next time. Very gracious :)
