After reading the beautiful descriptions on Baglio Occhipinti’s website and seeing the glowing reviews, we chose it as our agriturismo stay for this trip. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations.
Perhaps visiting in the off-season (October) with some rain played a role in this, but the property didn’t match the image portrayed online.
The website suggests a family farm with a strong garden-to-table ethos, filled with lush green spaces, herb gardens, and a variety of fruit and vegetable plots for guests to explore. In reality, the garden was much smaller and less inviting. We never found the fruit garden (property tour only extended to the indoor area), though there were a few orange and pomegranate trees near the pool. The vegetable garden was sparse, with only a few plants, and the herb garden was rather poorly maintained that at first, we weren’t sure if it was a garden or an abandoned patch of plants.
The indoor space was more underwhelming. The common area was cramped, with only two couches in the living room to relax on. Breakfast was served in this space, with some tables awkwardly placed in a narrow corridor leading to the reception. Even when the weather was nice, breakfast was not served outdoors.
Dinner was served in a separate building and offered a 6-course set menu for 65€. While we appreciated the option to select fewer courses, the pricing was disappointing—23€ for a basic spaghetti with garlic and oil, and the three courses we chose came to 60€, without any standout flavors or presentation to justify the cost.
Our room, priced at 440€ per night, had a persistent unpleasant musty smell of the toilet. The building was poorly sound-insulated- we could clearly hear conversations from neighboring rooms. On one night, heavy rain not only kept us awake due to noise, but also leaked through the window into the room.
While the kittens on the property were certainly cute, they roamed freely—even in the kitchen—which raised concerns about food hygiene. A heads-up on the website would have been helpful, especially for guests with allergies to cats.
Overall, Baglio Occhipinti feels like a place trying to be more than it is, yet already charging premium prices for the experience it aims to offer but doesn’t fully deliver.
