The Best Soup in the Twin Cities

"Despite the cuisines called out in the name, Minneapolis’ BaGu offers ramen, too. It makes a spicy ground pork version that’s super savory and legit spicy, not just Minnesota spicy. Reservations are available on OpenTable." - Cinnamon Janzer

Yelp
The service was fantastic and the waitress was fun to talk to and very knowledgeable of the menu. The restaurant is quaint on the smaller side so it can fill up fast. Make reservations to be certain. The bathroom could use a good cleaning however. The food was very good from the sushi to the curry, and papaya salad to desert everything was wonderful. They can make it spicy as well which i love:). You can't go wrong with this gem.

Yelp
We came here on a Friday night without reservations and planned to come early around 530 and they were actually busy. The staff were so friendly and let us know that they had reservations and there would be time to come back around 7. So she recommended some bars nearby. We quickly were called back and got seated. It had a small dining room but service is quick. We got edamame, also style papaya salad (5 spice level, the highest), a sushi roll (I think dynamite, I forgot), and a red curry with chicken that came with rice. It was all really good and more than enough for 2 people. We had enough to take home. They had a wide selection. There's a parking lot next to the building and some street parking.

Yelp
Overdue review because I forgot to write one for Bagu from my previous visit to MN. Coming from California, I had low expectations for their Asian cuisine here since that's not what they're known for. From my experience, I can definitely say that Bagu exceeded my expectations for a Japanese & Thai fusion restaurant here in Minnesota. They have a private lot & street parking right in front of the restaurant, I believe. If I remembered correctly, we got here around 7 PM for dinner & were seated fairly quickly. The ambience was pretty upscale & modern; Definitely great for a date night! Our server was very warm & welcoming. I ordered my go-to tofu pad Thai while the rest of the party ordered pad see ew, sushi, beverages, & roti for dessert! For my dish, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality & taste of the pad Thai noodles. I came here not knowing what to expect in terms of flavor, but it was pretty good for what it was! I personally still prefer the pad Thai back at home, but this was as close as I'll get to the pad Thai back in CA, lol. Just a personal preference! I don't usually eat sushi often, so my opinion for it may be skewed, lol. I forgot what we ordered to be exact, but I thought it was good. My favorite dish of the night had to be the roti. It was AMAZING. Just writing this review is making me drool for the roti, haha. Definitely worth ordering! Can't wait to drop by again the next time I'm in MN!

Yelp
We LOVE Bagu Sushi and Thai. We've only dined in once, and we sat in the back patio on a chilly evening, but it was perfect. The green tea helped warm me up. We had the JBB (highly recommend) which is essentially a salmon and cream cheese roll that is battered and deep fried. I always get the Mama roll and the salmon sashimi. My partner loves the Pad See Ew (which I agree is delicious) and the Masaman Curry. They are a small restaurant, so you typically will need a reservation. The staff are wonderful and down to earth. We've also ordered take out many times.

Yelp
Ordered the spicy salmon, three wise guys and the shinjuku rolls and all were fantastic!

Yelp
Last night was my first time checking out Bagu Sushi! Their location is in a nice a quiet area in south Minneapolis. They have. Small parking lot on the side of their building which I easily found a parking spot. The dining space inside is smaller but we easily got in with a reservation. I would say the dining furniture could use an update but it was clean. It would have been nice to have music low in the background, because it felt like everyone could hear my conversation. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. We started off with an appetizer and choose the Spring Rolls (shrimp, pork, lettuce, carrots and rice noodles). I enjoyed them and the sauce to dip them it was good! For dinner we shared sushi and got the following rolls: Spicy Tuna Sun Rise (seasonal) Alaska My favorite roll was the Alaska, it was spicy but wasn't too overpowering. I thought it had a nice kick. The sun rise roll was more of a sweeter roll with mango on top. It was good. I def will come back and check out their patio out back during the warmer summer months!

Yelp
High quality food. It's a cool little spot, I will say that the seating is not A+ comfortable and it's not a quiet place when full. Everything we tried, and it was many things, was great. Service staff was great, although it did take us a little while to get our main dishes after the apps. Would go again.

Yelp
Best ramen I've had so far here in MN! Definitely recommend. I got the spicy level 5! The service made my dining experience even better.

Yelp
This place was AMAZING! I would definitely go back. Every dish was so good. Everything was seasoned very well, full of flavor. We ordered the Angry Salmon, Poke Ahi, Drunken Noodle with Pork Belly, Fried Rice with Pork Belly, and Spicy Ramen. Place is small and they also have a special board menu. I wanted to try their Thai Boat Noodles but they didn't have it available that day. Currently due to the pandemic they are only open for dinner.

Yelp
I took a chance on Bagu and on my first visit yesterday brought my out of town friend here. The gamble paid off as we were both very pleased with our meals! The space was modern and cozy. There were plenty of food options available which almost made it hard to decide - they all sounded delicious! I settled on a thai tea, with agedashi tofu appetizer, and a red curry main. To start, the thai tea was so delicious! Perfect balance of spices, sweetness, and cream. The agedashi tofu appetizer is perfect to share as it is a generous portion. The tofu was perfectly crisp and the sauce rounded out the flavor. Finally, the red curry - wow! The curry was a very generous portion size that I had to get a take out box. The tofu was perfectly crispy on the outside and the sauce was so creamy with a nice touch of spice. This meal was well worth it and I can't wait to come back and try more of their options!

Yelp
GREAT food and service!! Not sure why it has such low ratings. We tried a couple cooked sushi options YUM and the red curry, miso soup, pad kee mao (drunken noodle) and Tom yum. YUM to all of it!!!! will definitely be coming back! This is the best drunken noodle and Tom yum I've had in the Minneapolis area yet!!

Yelp
Wow wow wee welcome to my seventh review of 2020!!!!! I am not sure if I understand why there are poor reviews here. Yeah, it's not the biggest place but the food was freaking good and the ladies serving us were friendly and polite. Make sure you make reservations or they will turn you away if it is busy. They also have a parking lot so it was pretty convenient. Our drunken noodles with soft shell crab is a must have. The noodles were cooked al dente and the wonderful basil umami flavor just makes you crave for more with every bite. We asked for a spicy sauce on the side and it was kicking! So good with the little extra heat. We also ordered sushi and for MN, the sushi is as good as it gets. No complains there, it tasted fresh and the fish to rice ratio was good. What is there not to like about this place!?

Leland D.

Yelp
I'm leaving this review for the Chinese broccoli stir fry entree. I ordered this for take out, and it was $15 for about 1 cup of boiled greens and leaves, and the basic white rice pack. We've had sushi here before and enjoyed it but this might be the worst $15 I ever spent on Asian food.

Yelp
First time last night with my college aged kids and we loved it! Very fresh ingredients and tasted better than similar dishes at other places. Salmon in the sushi melted in my mouth! Chicken Pad Thai was very flavorful. Spring rolls and sauce were fresh. Spicy ramen was fantastic with pork pieces until the end, egg was exceptional, spices made my mouth wake up, the wooden spoon was perfect! We will be back for sure!

Yelp
The atmosphere and food are unmatched. I will be returning. I ordered a beef and sweet potato curry and two small rolls. All phenomenal :)

Yelp
This place deserves way better ratings than it has!! My friend and I came here on a cold night, starving and tired, and we were blown away. We got some of the best cream cheese wontons I've ever had, the vegetarian curry sushi rolls (omg incredible) and green curry with tofu (I dream about this curry, and the tofu was perfectly crispy). The facility is clean and sophisticated, all of the food is excellent quality and plated beautifully, and the employees were friendly, even though we were the last customers and got there near closing. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Walking into the restaurant was really nice, got seated right away and the service was pretty good, got our food out in a timely manner, Ordered the Chicken Karage and Pad Thai, Baked Mussels and cooked Yellowtail with Rice, every dish was great, didn't have a bland taste at all. Waitress filled our waters when we got low so thats great too. Overall it was a great time and the service was good and the food was pretty good. Would come back to try the other dishes forsure.

Alex R.

Yelp
Everything out of stock, people sat after us got food first. Quaint small place. Canceled order and left, no need to spend $100 for mediocre everything

Yelp
Their Massaman Curry Level 3 curry is some of the best I've ever had! It's delicious, rich, spicy and not overly salty. I like to get mine with vegetables. It's my comfort food and I highly recommend it. Their spice is amazing without being overpowering. I also love their vegetable egg rolls. If you order take out be prepared to wait 60 minutes. It's worth the wait! Once you try it you'll be hooked.

Yelp
Great! I cooked in a restaurant on Koh Phangan (in the 80s before the Yoga craze discovered this tropical island paradise) and often have trouble finding a Thai restaurant that gets the acid/savory/sweet balance right. Bagu hit the jackpot with its Tom Yum. Perfect... and the flavors of fresh lemon grass and kaffir lime leaves, yup -- perfect! The Pad Thai was also delicious (if just a bit sweet) with its sublimely crispy, but still pillowy soft, tofu. Two thumbs up on that tofu! Also, the pork eggrolls were unique ~ tasty, crispy, and memorable. As for cons: The sushi roll (shrimp tempura) paled in comparison--a bit limp and lackluster. And, at these prices, plastic dipping cups for gyoza seemed out of place. But, the above 'cons' are insignificant cuz the staff was great and for THAI food--it may become our new Go-to.

Yelp
Small place, big food, big flavor. I am from out of town and love Thai food this is some of the best.

Yelp
Amazing food! Seriously changed my life. Go try it now. Location was quaint, nothing fancy about it. But the food was all spit on. We ordered five rolls, three apps, and ramen. Nothing but amazing.

Shelby B.

Yelp
Wonderful local sushi spot. Great happy hour specials! The sushi is fresh and so tasty. The mochi was super yummy (red bean was our favorite). Looking forward to sitting on their cute patio in the summer!

Yelp
Great place for smaller parties of 4, max 6 but I wouldn't push it. Nice ambience, great location and decent size parking lot. I enjoyed every Japanese dish I ordered. All the food came out fresh but it does take a little time. I didn't get the chance to try any Thai dishes since I over ordered sushi. I would definitely recommend this place to all sushi lovers. The photos says it all. I will be going back to try the Thai dishes and more.

Bee T.

Yelp
Food was bussing!! Good amount of spice! Definitely recommend the spicy pork belly pad sew yu if you love spice!! It ain't good if it's not spicy!! Sushi was 10/10. Nothing heavy. Everything was perfect!! Definitely coming back !!!

Yelp
This place gets more of a 3.5 stars. The food tasted pretty good and staffs were friendly and welcoming however a bit slow on the service and forgetful. My boyfriend and i were probably one couple of the 3 that were there and there were no other customers due to a slippery and snowy day that night. Our waters were served right away. I asked for straws and our hostess forgot to bring them out once so I had to remind her and for some reason it took her forever to bring us our straws. Our food took awhile to come out. Our egg rolls, which was our appetizer took the longest. Like....extremely long, to the point where we almost close to killing our dinner. Not sure why it took so long. My boyfriend then ordered a drink and our hostess, forgot again, to bring it out after some time so i had to remind her. Besides the slow service and hostess being super forgetful on our order (even when it wasn't busy), the food was delicious. My boyfriend had the ox tail pho; which I had to try and it was bomb! However, I felt like it the portion for the price was a bit small; broth was amazing though! A platter of sushi: can't recall exactly what I got but it tasted fresh and was well presented. Chicken pad Thai; wasn't the greatest but it wasn't Terrible either. I like my pad Thai more brown than red. It was a bit bland so the flavor could've been more intensified. Egg rolls tasted fine and came with a side sauce. Overall, experience was okay but the food made up for it so I may have to go back and check it out again.

Yelp
Went here with a groupon- sushi was very disappointing. Cucumbers in the catipillar roll we're old, the French kiss roll did not taste good at all. Edamame was dry and was not worth the $6 at all. The house ramen was alright. Noodles tasted like they were from an instant noodles bag. Soup was alright. Pork in it was good though. Wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
Found a Groupon for the place and decided it was a good deal. Had the Gyoza for a hot appetizer and decided to split the Pirates platter. It came out in a corny 'boat' platter. The miso soup was very good and it came with much more ingredients than any other sushi place I've been to. Lots of tofu, seaweed and green onions, very good. The 'boat' had a wide variety of sushi, sashimi, and a couple of rolls, one of which seemed to have been coated with tempura and quickly fried. This roll was very good and I wish I would have asked about it. Plenty of food for the two of us and a great deal with the Groupon. The staff was very nice and quick, we asked for some extra rice and she was back in just seconds with it. Some reviews were complaining about service but all I saw was top notch. Great food and with a Groupon? A heck of a deal. I will be back, Groupon or not. I have to retract my comment, and apologize. I had commented that for having 8 customers in the restaurant that the food was taking longer than I thought it should. It wasn't until we left that I realized there was a patio out back. It was at least 85% full. It just appeared with so few people inside that the food was taking longer than it should. We had another great meal here on Friday evening. Fresh fish, great shrimp appetizer, tasty miso soup, a great bargain when you factor in a Groupon.

Yelp
This tiny little restaurant on Chicago is the bomb. The food is always incredibly delicious and the staff is very friendly. Try the curry for sure, it is spicy and amazing and sure to please. I have had almost everything on the menu and am never disappointed. Get in here!

Yelp
I tried Bagu for the first time a few days ago and I really enjoyed it! I ordered through BiteSquad, but chose pick up as I live pretty close (it wasn't clear on the website if I could use a card when calling in for pick up, so I just ordered through BiteSquad and was able to chose a pick-up time). I am thankful I ordered the way I did as there were a lot of folks that were waiting for their call-in take out orders, but mine was ready to rock when I got there. Downside is I paid BiteSquad fees for that luxury, so not sure I'd do it that way again if I can use a card when calling in order. Warning, the spicy tuna really has a kick!! I love a good kick to my spice, but this was a wee bit too hot to really enjoy the flavor of the tuna - however, I had it in a hand roll and (I can't believe I'm saying this) I think it would've been a little better balanced with a bit more rice. Usually I want less rice and more fish in my hand rolls, but because of the heat level, more rice would've helped. Despite that, everything else was amazing! The fish was fresh, the portions are great - the prices are high, but I felt that I got every bang for my buck. I love the fluffy wasabi, the rolls were so flavorful and fresh! One of my favorites was the Number 9 roll. I also greatly enjoyed the Crunchy Spicy Tuna roll, Triple Treat Roll, and the Spicy Salmon Roll. Also note: the rolls are HUGE! The maki rolls were as wide as Spider Rolls, it was awesome. I look forward to trying the Thai dishes, definitely will be coming back for more.

Yelp
Artistry in food! Even better, the food tastes as good as it looks! I would recommend their Poke Bowl IF you like fresh Ahi Tuna & spicy goodness! It was a delight to have good poke bowl in Minnesota (instead of Hawaii)! We enjoyed the spicy salmon roll, as well as the salmon skins (unusual, but good). There are no photos of the pork belly drunken noodle, since it smelled so amazing-we ate it as soon as it hit our table! This place is tiny, so come early!
google avatar

Abbie F.

Yelp
Wow! I can't believe I haven't written a review for here yet! I come here every couple of months. I love their happy hour and their Groupon! And this is not a place to go if you are in a rush! This is a place to go if you want to sit and have a conversation and then sit some more and then eat a bit and then sit. I like the ambiance and I like the new chairs/decor on the inside. Most importantly I love the gyzoa, seaweed salad, crunchy roll, shrimp tempura roll, French kiss and one more that I'm forgetting. I also love the chicken ginger with rice. Mmmm. The pictures are from different times going there because I thought I posted a review before. And yes they are small so if you don't get a table upon arrival you will wait a long time and I totally think the food is worth it! So good! Plus free dessert on valentines days! Yes!
google avatar

Joseph R.

Yelp
Japanese, deep fried bagel balls with salmon! Does it get any better than that? Yes it does. The meals were exquisite to the standard of the most arduous palette. Roasted brown rice green tea and Pad Thai of the highest caliber. Nice and casual but most important, authentic.
google avatar

Katie V.

Yelp
I was torn between 3 and 4 stars and decided to be charitable and round up. The space is small and does fill up on the weekends but they do take reservations. Tonight we opted for seats at the small sushi counter (seats 4) instead of waiting 30 min for a table. Service was pleasant if a little bit slow. The star of the meal was the Tom Yum soup with shrimp -- so flavorful and perfect on a cold winter night. Decent portion for $7.50; my date and I shared it as an app but it could be a meal. The sushi rolls were also very good -- not the prettiest or most elegant presentation but high quality fish and a lot of it. The house ramen was disappointing; just lacking in flavor and a bit oily. Overall, a solid experience esp considering the moderate price. Will be back to try Thai curry and noodle dishes!

Yelp
I've heard about this place but now living close I finally came to check it out. Opted for a take out order on a lazy Sunday. I tried calling a couple times to place an order and no one answered. I was on a mission so I drove over. It was busy so perhaps that's why my call wasn't answered. There were a few others picking up orders. Fortunately I was able to place an order quickly and didn't have to wait terribly long. Sushi was really good, especially for take out sushi - very impressed. The drunken noodle was also pretty good. This is often made with too much oil, but not here! The pork belly ramen not so good. The pork belly tasted off and really ruined the dish. I ended up just eating the noodles and broth which were ok. Ill be back and hope to bump up the review a start or two next time!

Julia M.

Yelp
Can't believe this place doesn't have better ratings! I have traveled all over and I look forward to coming back to Minneapolis to eat their sushi. For two money signs, it's amazing! It's a family hole in the wall place that is so friendly and welcoming. They sometimes can be low on ingredients, staff, etc but don't let that distract you from the quality of the food.
google avatar

William P.

Yelp
Went for happy hour last week. Nice sushi options. Good happy hour. The soft shell crab on the drunken noodles is just fantastic. We'll be back!

Yelp
Hey! I have been disappointed by other Citie's favorites Covid-19 era take-out quality so, I was reluctant to drop more than a C-note on mediocre food for my family. I was NOT disappointed in the least with Bagu!! We ordered hot Thai & Japanese dishes as well as a bunch of sushi and appetizers. All of the food was delicious. The door person was so polite on the phone and cheery as well in person. So proud that this restaurant is still in operation in my neighborhood. Great job. Stand outs tonight were the Thai Basil Stir-fry with Pork belly and the Sushi appetizer plate with generous slabs of sushi meat on just right chewy rice. Oh yeah, the purple sticky rice with the Green Thai Curry w/Chicken was awesome too. Paul (Hale Page Diamond Lake neighborhood)

Yelp
This is by far the worst sushi we have ever had. EVER! On the first bite, each roll tasted like a rotting fish baking in heat and humidity smells. When we called to complain, and politely so, the "manager" stated that they "tested" every ingredient. What does that even mean? Food inspection? Well, if that's the case, then the inspection failed. Who wants to consume something that tastes like it's rotted and coated in slime? The miso soup even tasted like cardboard. We love sushi, but if this had been our first try of it, then we'd never eat it again. We had the Dragon Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Curry Roll, Dynamite Roll, Fuji Roll, and Miso soup.
google avatar

Ben T.

Yelp
This had to be one of the most satisfying sushi meals I've had in the twin cities, so far. Everything was cooked to order so the food was really fresh. I had the tuna tataki, Hamachi Cheek, salmon skin salad, sashimi platter, and a sushi roll with which I forgot the name, but that doesn't matter; the dish of the evening was that Hamachi cheek, it was tender, juicy, and the skin was nice and crispy! The sashimi platter was great because all the fish were clean tasting and not fishy at all. Atmosphere is a bit clunky, but it'll do. There's plenty of parking out on the street and a designated area to park on the side of the building. Me and my girlfriend were here mainly because we were craving sushi, but I'd come again to try their Thai food and another shot at that amazing Hamachi Cheek.
google avatar

Maya S.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming to Bagu for years now and they never disappoint! We ordered out for the first time during COVID and chose Bagu. We ordered through bite squad which saved us some time of having to wait as it gave us a pretty accurate estimate of when it would be ready. We ordered lots of sushi, extra wasabi, and as a vegetarian, I can't recommend the Agedashi tofu enough! I also really enjoyed the green curry with tofu, seaweed salad, and vegetable tempura.
google avatar

Debbie L.

Yelp
The best Sushi restaurant in the cities hands down! Best customer service, fast delivery, online ordering!! If they forget part of an order they make it right immediately! No charge!!! Best all around experience EVERY TIME I HAVE BEEN THERE!!! Tuna Tataki!!! Yummy! Thanks!!!
google avatar

Brittany N.

Yelp
We stuck to sushi but I'll be back to try the Thai dishes. We started with the Takoyaki and it was not impressive. It wasn't very hot and the octopus was really rubbery. We had a Rainbow roll, Dragon roll and Shinjuku roll. They were all pretty good but the Shinjuku was by far the stand out! We had a Groupon and arrived at 5:30 so we were the first people there (they opened at 5). The service was on the slow side but nothing terrible. I'd say give it a try!
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
I've picked up takeout from here twice in the last few months since it's in the neighborhood.. ordered Pad Thai both times. First time was average, but I was hungover. Second time it was legit bad. I've never had sushi from here, but from the look of the place and the quality of the food, I'd probably just do yourself a favor and don't eat here. I won't be back.
google avatar

Cristina R.

Yelp
Ordered carry out the other night. Service was fine and polite. The wait for four rolls of sushi was 35 minutes. Not a big deal when you expect good food. However....they were the most ill-prepared rolls I've ever had. For $15 rolls, I expect better quality. The taste was very fishy. It concerned me that I've never had salmon and tuna taste and smell so fishy. It didn't seem right and we were not able to eat any of it. Even the crab had a not so fresh taste. The sauce that typically gets drizzled over the rolls, was dropped on top so thick you couldn't even see the sushi. I should have taken a picture for proof of how crazy it looked. So disappointed.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Good place to have in the neighborhood for take-out. Really love the thai basil stir fry and curry, but not my top destination for pad thai.

Yelp
Groupon = Cheap Sushi = Steve Is Happy. Rolled in here. Bagu apparently means "Our Bar." I have no idea how that works so dont ask but the waitress had to ask and she said so. It's slow, but if you go with good company, you don't really mind... so make sure you take someone you like... or need a good reason to hang out with for a long time. Intimate atmosphere nothing pretentious, just a good old fashioned neighborhood sushi place. The plates on the wall are a clever idea, kinda cool. The sushi chefs and I had this awkward yet powerful eye contact for about 25 seconds that we will cherish and never speak of again. The rolls. Try the one with the rainbow colored roe on my description. I chose that cause they were out of the Mango one. Roll "number 9" has a combination of cooked, vegetable, and just about every place has it so I judge a little on that roll... very standard, nothing too special but it isnt Kyoto-bad so it's all good. The tea was good, the person I was with couldn't lift the pot though cause it was heavy, but that's a good opportunity to look sexy and bust out the guns, and pour it out (or slingshots... whatever you work with) and look chic. Not intimidating, people are nice. Sushi chefs are silent, but stare powerfully, and they have the one pie in the face machine on all the youtube videos. Worth a stop, even more worthy with the groupon.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. My girl and I went for dinner on 01/10/18 because we were in the mood for curry and sushi. The place closed at 9 and we arrived at 8, hoping for a quick bite. Around 8:30 they pulled out a mop and dirty bucket, and were slamming/banging things around the sushi bar, prepping to close I guess. By the time we got our food, the place smelled of cleaning product, and the bucket next to the bar was pretty unsightly. Again, the food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, but the overall experience (first time) was diminished by the staff trying to rush out.
