The 15 Best Portland, Maine Restaurants | Condé Nast Traveler

"Baharat is an ambitious but unpretentious brick-and-mortar boîte, where the attitude is cool (note the garage door walls that stay open to the street in warm weather) and the street food-meets-elegant dishes are hot. As you could fairly expect with a name like Baharat (it translates to "spices” in Arabic), the kitchen here knows its way around a spice rack. Chef Norris employs the Middle East’s superstars—a cardamom-laced zhoug sauce and smoked paprika on the za’atar deviled eggs, for example—to deftly elevate nearly every dish. Spicy and sweet abound here, as with the seared salmon with black lentil salad, Moroccan olives, fennel, and sumac vinaigrette, and the house favorite: lamb kofta with tangy tzatziki and pomegranate molasses. And don’t bypass the All In, a large-format production—so big it arrives on a sheet pan—of tangy-sweet house-made pickles and an Iraqi flatbread that’s equal parts fluffy and chewy." - Alexandra Hall

"Make room for Middle Eastern–inspired Baharat’s Turkish crab dip with house-made chips and takoyaki and okonomiyaki from Japanese comfort food spot Mami, which prove that you can go from great food truck to even better brick-and-mortar." - ByAndrew Knowlton

Bottom line: you need to try Baharat. Incredible food in a comfortable and cool atmosphere. Perfect combinations of flavors and Middle Eastern spices without being overwhelming. One of those rare gems where you can't believe how good the first bite is and every dish is still better than the last from starters to dessert. Uniquely extraordinary cocktails, to boot!

HALAL item is the chicken ONLY. The host who seated us wasn’t even aware that they served halal chicken. Being from NYC you tend to have high expectations for Mediterranean food. For starters we had the pickle plate and the hummus with the Iraqi bread. As the pickle plate and the Iraqi bread were delicious the hummus was bland and watered down. The non alcoholic drink we tried was called “My Point Being” which was very sour and had to be sent back. For the entree we had the chicken plate that comes with the Palestinian salad and the chicken kebab. The chicken was moist and juicy but the mint rice was bland. For the price it is, it’s really not that great. I think this place was just opened as an aesthetic. We didn’t even bother trying the desserts. It’s getting 3 stars because of how clean the restaurant was and the rustic vibe. If you’re in the area check them out, wouldn’t recommend traveling all the way out for them.

First time here and will definitely be coming back very soon! Really exceptional food and service and the specialty cocktails are pretty darn good too! If you’re looking for something out of the way and a little different taste in and around the Portland area this is a great place to venture out to… You will not be disappointed!

This is one of the best restaurants in Portland, maybe Maine. The best Middle Eastern food I've had since Tel Aviv, and a real gem in terms of service, cocktails and menu. Go with friends and get the all in platter. Not to be missed!

Decided to give this spot a visit after seeing the menu and some high ratings. We got some hummus, bread, chicken plate, and lamb kofta (the chicken and lamb came with rice and veggies on the side). One of the biggest cons for us was that the hummus did not taste great or that special at all- it felt a bit bland and almost watered down. The chicken plate and lamb kofta were pretty good, definitely would pick chicken over beef because I felt the beef had a sort of aftertaste to it.

Top notch experience. Baharat has an urban vibe and is located in a newly revived neighborhood. The food was an amazing mix of flavors. We had the All In for 2, which was plenty of food. From the falafel balls to the chicken and lamb skewers we left with very pleased palates. The bar staff is fun and masters of their art.

We loved the food, atmosphere, and service. The prices weren’t bad. It’s a fun twist on Middle Eastern food, and the restaurant is really cute. We got the All In for 2. It was plenty for the 3 of us, and a great way to try everything. The staff was polite and helpful. We will be back the next time we’re in town.

I loved everything I had here. Mushrooms fricassee was one of the best ways I've ever had mushrooms. Baba ghanoush was a great way to start the meal. Also had the chicken kebab small plate and swordfish skewer dinner plate. All were extremely flavorful, nothing was overdone nor tough. The cocktails are great as well! They do not take reservations but you can put your name on a list and go check out some local breweries while you see what place in line you are.
