My wife and I chose Estancia Bahia Bustamante because we were looking for an unusual experience, having stayed in many estancias before in Argentina, and we were not disappointed. Between the flight from Buenos Aires and the car rental, it is neither inexpensive to get to, nor a quick trip. On the drive on RN 3 from the airport in Trelew, traffic was almost exclusively trucks, with few cars. On the last 45 minutes on a dirt road, it's likely to see no more than a car or two in either direction. But that makes it special. We were told that roughly half the guests are from Argentina, half from North America, and half from Europe. Our accommodations were very spacious and comfortable, facing the ocean, which was less than 100 metres away. The staff were all terrific. The estancia is immense in size. Our guide, Marina, was wonderful and we very much enjoyed the tour of the settlement, which housed up to 500 people when the commercial seaweed business was operating between the early fifties and twenty or so years ago, but whose building are now mostly unused. We had wonderful excursions to the penguin island (accessible by foot at low tide) , the peninsula, and the petrified forest. (Due to a tendency to get sea sick, we did not take the boat ride to another island full of penguins.) While there is a reluctance to take inexperienced horseback riders, we were very fortunate to have Mathias, the grandson of the founder of the settlement and the person now managing the lodge (as well as the sheep farming on the estancia) take us for a terrific, early morning ride along the beach, which was a highlight of our stay. Jogging along the coast line is easy to do. The food was excellent and was prepared gluten-free/Celiac-friendly. Sightings of guanacos, rheas, and maras are plentiful, The price for staying at this estancia is relatively very high, compared to other estancias, but no doubt, this is because of its remoteness. We were convinced to buy a US$100 bottle of wine at our first dinner (with the unused portion saved for subsequent meals.) We later ordered two glasses of red wine at US$7.00 per glass and that was just as good. Note that the electricity is turned off at night and a battery pack to charge iPads and cell phones comes in very handy. All in all, our stay was great and we have wonderful stories to tell.
