Yelp
I apologize in advance if this is long, but I'm writing this in the middle of a whole fiasco with the resort. My fam booked a 4 day, 5-night stay in early August 2021 at the Bahia Principe luxury Akumal.
*disclaimer* The humidity here was truly something else. If you're from Florida or another equator-riding part of the globe, this will feel a little worse than home. The humidity was so strong in fact, that rating became an uncomfortable part of the day.
Good
1. Extremely friendly staff who you can strike up a conversation with easily regardless of language barriers
2. Truly beautiful resort with a massive campus sprawling all across the beaches here.
3. Resort offered different types of entertainment all throughout the day (magic shows, silent disco, dance classes, etc.
4. (Some) Incredible restaurants with 5 star food (highly recommend Don Pablo)
Bad
1. When booking our stay at this resort, we were excited to eat at the restaurants on the resort, only to find out that upon checking in, the restaurants were virtually completely booked a week out. When we did manage to secure a reservation, the food was good, but the restaurant was barely half full which could be either because of COVID (understandable) or because the resort wants to cut down on costs. We just felt cheated of the whole "all-inclusive" aspect of this trip.
2. When we first arrived to the resort, check-in took a whopping 45 minutes with a less than half full lobby and I just know that check-out will be similar if not worse of a headache.
3. The buffets are your only option for food if you did not book a reservation at one of the restaurants. The buffet can be likened to the American collegiate dorm room dining experience with all of the food looking appetizing, but with no flavor. They have loads of options to choose from, but all disappointing and lacking flavor. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about the buffets was that, both the buffet room and the dining room had AC units, but were not on. This was incredibly frustrating as the food itself was not cold when it should've been (sushi, ceviche) and we were all sticky from the humid air which just made eating uncomfortable.
Unacceptable
1. We got two rooms in the same building when we first arrived. We finished check-in and came to realize that the AC units in BOTH rooms were not working. We were obviously annoyed because the rooms should've been a safe haven from the humidity, but we gave them the benefit of the doubt. We called maintenance at around 20:00 and a man arrived at 22:00. I'm not sure if the humidity added to the frustration, but this was unacceptable. We had just arrived to what we thought was going to be an unforgettable experience, and we're greeted by almost 6 hours of just waiting. I can say this was an unforgettable experience, but for entirely the wrong reasons. After the maintenance man arrived, he said that he wouldn't be able to fix the AC units and that they would just change our rooms. Finally, we thought as we gathered our luggage to two new rooms to find out once again that the AC units in BOTH rooms were not working. So we called again, and finally they moved us for a second time to two rooms with working AC units. So just to recap, we arrived at around 18:00, moved rooms twice with an unnecessary amount of waiting time (~6 hours), and finally went to sleep at around 4 in the morning. This was the first day, and also when we knew that things were probably going to be frustrating for the rest of our stay.
2. We ordered room service at 13:00 and we're told it would take 45 min to arrive. We ordered just a hamburger, brownie and a water bottle. After about an hour, I called the front desk to inquire about the food and they said it would be there in 15 minutes, but I kind of knew in the back of my head that what we requested would never come, so I decided to see how long it would take. Just make a game out of it and turn a bad situation into a good one. 2 hours had passed and it was now 15:00, so I called the front desk for a second time and they put me on hold for 10 minutes. No one responded after 10 minutes so I hung up, with the intention to continue my little game to fruition. The time was now 17:00 and about 3 hours prior, I knew the food was not gonna make it to our door. So just to recap, I ordered room service at 13:00, was told that it would come within an hour, and it never came after 4+ hours of waiting.
3. One of the employees, named HECTOR, straight up lied to us about the second time we changed our rooms telling us, "oh don't worry about it, your room will be ready by 15:00, just enjoy your lunch until then!" We finished our lunch and moved into our new room 5 hours later at 20:00.
I have never before experienced frustration like this until we arrived to the resort. For a family of 5, an all inclusive resort solved all of our problems, but unfortunately we chose the wrong one.
There are MUCH MUCH BETTER options th
