Bahn Thai Restaurant Is Expanding in University Heights and Reopening in Hillcrest | Eater San Diego

"After operating out of a modest storefront on Park Boulevard for over a decade, I’ve watched the popular neighborhood Thai spot significantly size up in University Heights by moving into a much larger 3,500-square-foot space that was occupied by Johnston’s until it shuttered last fall and was the longtime home of Small Bar. Owner Paul Srimuang says they’ll be settling into the new location later this year after obtaining a construction permit to build onto the existing site to add more storage, and despite the building’s bar-focused history they won’t be serving alcohol. 2024 will also bring the reopening of Bahn Thai’s newer Hillcrest location on Fifth Avenue, which has been closed since May 2023 due to a fire; rebuilding has begun and they hope to be back up and running by June or July. The property transfer was assisted by Paul Ahern and Nate Benedetto of Next Wave Commercial, and former Johnston’s owner John Pani — who runs nearby Park & Rec — says he’s very happy about the sale and a longtime fan of the restaurant." - Candice Woo

Where to Find Terrific Thai Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"In this cozy University Heights restaurant, you’ll find sidewalk seating but generally, it’s geared for takeout and catering. Be sure to try the bai grapow with ground chicken, a stir-fry dish with basil leaves and sweet peppers. A few other dishes like the yum nuea, a beef salad, or young duck curry, are worth trying. Unlike other places, Bahn Thai does not fool around with spice levels and diners get the heat they order." - Helen I. Hwang

Essential Restaurants for Casual and Work Lunches in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Since it opened in 2011, Bahn Thai has become a destination for toothsome Thai. For good reason: the University Heights restaurant (with a newer, larger Hillcrest location) doles out rich curries, smokey, garlicky noodles, tart soups, and other Thai favorites, in sizable portions for reasonable prices. They do brisk takeout business plus dine-in as well, but the patio is small. A picnic at nearby Trolley Barn Park is one more option."

Google
Neat little cafe that sells amazing Thai food!! Drunken noodles were delicious with well cooked and tender duck, and had a good amount of kick at medium spice level. Pad Thai with beef was great as well, providing that unique combination of sweet and sour so characteristic of this Thai dish. It might not be the best Thai restaurant I have been to, but so far the best I found in San Diego. Definitely recommend!!

Google
This family-owned restaurant is casual and trendy and truly a "hole-in-wall," serving up delicious, and not your ordinary, Thai food! VERY busy, so that speaks to its popularity! It offers only a few outdoor tables that are first come, first served. There is no indoor seating, so it's best to plan for takeout. Or, you might get lucky like us and snag a table to enjoy your food and people-watching! It's definitely worth checking out! 😉😋😋😋

Google
Bahn Thai is an 5-star hole in the wall Thai restaurant! Easy to miss but if you’re going during prime time there will be a long line and long wait. I recommend ordering takeout over the phone before arriving. They are in such high demand, they’ve removed indoor seating and added 3 more cash registers. Outdoor seating is now only outdoors and limited to 5 4-top tables. We came during off hours on a Saturday and the restaurant was still busy and all the tables were taken from 2-4pm. Now to the food—Every dish bursts with authentic flavor, fresh ingredients, and that perfect balance of sweet, savory, and spicy that makes Thai cuisine so addictive. The Pad See Ew was rich and smoky, Tom Yum soup, pad Thai, and the Green Curry were creamy and aromatic with just the right heat, and the Mango Sticky Rice? Perfection. The service is warm and attentive — you can tell they care about both their food and their customers. The ambiance is busy and inviting, whether you’re dining outdoors or picking up takeout. It’s become one of my go-to Thai spots in town, and I always leave satisfied. Highly recommend Bahn Thai to anyone craving delicious, comforting, and authentic Thai food! 🍛🇹🇭🔥

Google
Really liked this Thai spot. You know it’s a good sign when you can smell the fish sauce from outside. Got the red curry with pork, super solid. I’d prefer it a bit creamier, but it tasted authentic. The black sticky rice dessert was also great. Only downside is the seating, not many tables, so when it’s busy you end up hovering and hoping for a spot. Wish I lived closer so I could just take it home. Definitely coming back to try more.

Google
Got take out and would recommend. - Pad kee mao 5/5 - red curry stood out as great 5/5 - rolls 5/5 - pad Thai had a earthy dry flavor I didn’t care for 3/5

Google
Cute and cozy hole-in-the-wall spot with counter service and shaded outdoor seating. We ordered the Chicken Pad Thai and the Vegetarian Eggplant Basil — both were absolutely delicious! A great little find for a satisfying, flavorful meal.

Google
Best Thai food restaurant I’ve ever had in San Diego. The service is great and friendly. The Pad Thai and Thai Tea are phenomenal. I highly recommend this place!

Google
A must have!!! When you walk up, you can smell the delicious food immediately. We came to pick up our order on a Friday night, and this place was BUSY. They had at least 30 to-go orders stacked, all the tables outside were taken, and people were standing on the sidewalk waiting. The food was packaged perfectly and piping hot even after walking home. The portions are large and the food is so so so flavorful. Can't wait to come back soon.

Yelp
It was amazing ! It was right in down town and I'm we ordered to go . I got the eggplant and beef with rice and a Thai ice tea . The beef and eggplant was seasoned so well . And the service was great as well . It was a busy location . Outside seating seemed busy . It was a great experience .

Yelp
This is a very local Thai restaurant that is delicious, and they impressively whip up orders in a small kitchen catering to the massive demand. Recommend calling in to place an order and see how long it will take - for us, around 6pm Sunday, it was a 20 min wait for calling in, and DoorDash is 40-50 min, and by the time we went to pick up the food in person, new orders were 30-40 min. Calling in will ensure the menu prices as DoorDash of course will mark up each item by a few dollars, so it adds up. Timing is more or less accurate, +/- 10 min or so, which is not too bad. We got the chicken pad Thai, crab fried rice, roasted duck curry, and lahb gai. The pad Thai as per usual is good and fairly standard. The crab fried rice has generous amounts of crab and is excellent in itself, but if you want to be fancy, you can pair it with the duck curry. The duck curry is very flavorful and a bit spicy as we requested medium, and there is generous amounts of meat too (along with potatoes, etc). The lahb gai has mint and lettuce and ground chicken, and is a good option for the hot weather. Seating is extremely limited - people will be standing around to claim a seat the moment a party leaves, but we got lucky to get a seat for the 2 of us to enjoy the food as soon as it was ready.

Yelp
I buy the jar of their chili oil... perfectly spicy and the best I've had. The staff is friendly whether you order in or to-go. Open outdoor seating great on a nice day. Casual lunch / dinner spot 10/10 recommend their pad see ew!

Yelp
This is a tiny restaurant with no inside seating , just outside seating. This place has great food, good pricing and generous portions. Parking can be a little challenging here but manageable as long as you walk a little. You order your food at the counter and they bring it out to you. We came here multiple times on our 5 day trip in San Diego. Love the following items: Tom Yum Gong Tom Yum Kha Crab fried rice. Black rice pudding Mango sticky rice Thai ice tea

Yelp
This location in University Heights is really busy and is like a 'controlled madhouse'. Ordering was really easy and straightforward. We didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes to order, but waiting for our food took about 20 minutes. We went during peak dinner hours on a Saturday so this was expected, but it was interesting to see the layout of this restaurant. Inside is used just for ordering (they had 4 cashiers) and you wait outside for your food to be called. There are a few tables outside but these go quick. The lack of seating is also why there are so many people just picking up their orders and taking it to go. We got lucky and were able to get a table. Get the Pineapple Fried Rice! Super flavorful and had a hint of curry taste in it too. A little sweetness from the pineapple gave it a nice touch. The Yum Nuea is their beef salad and oh man this was packkkeddd with flavor! Super zesty and citrusy from the lime and fish sauce, this was amazing. I also got a cup of tom yum soup and I was honestly disappointed. It didn't pack as much of a zesty flavor than what I'm used to and so I felt that the soup was overall a bit lacking (something that I never would think to say about Thai food). The Panang Curry was also good but I've definitely had better. I didn't get much flavor from the kefir lime leaves and so the curry while still good, felt a bit lackluster.

Yelp
Socal is a sea of average to above average Thai restaurants, but Bahn Thai might just be the solo standout of them all. My wife and I make a point of stopping here every time we visit SD because the food is absolutely NEXT LEVEL in its taste, quality, and authenticity. Bahn Thai has the only pad thai that I would call "authentic" (even though I never order it when it BK). The yellow curry is also a solid staple, the curry has a rich yet not overpowering flavor and pairs nicely with their noodle dishes. We always pick up and they are ALWAYS packed so be prepared to wait. Parking is also a struggle so you may have to circle the block and walk a little bit. Do not let this deter you because Bahn Thai is well worth it. If you are in the area or just visiting, this place is a must try.

Yelp
We were in SD for the weekend and so I came onto yelp just browsing through food options and ended up here. What we ordered: Medium spicy pad thai with chicken Medium spicy roasted duck yellow curry - comes with rice Egg Rolls Medium spicy Drunken Noodles with beef The pad thai was soo good and not spicy at all, I ended up adding a ton of chili oil so I could probably go up in spice level next time. The curry was also soo good! Not overwhelmingly sweet, the veggies (potatoes, onions, bell peppers & carrots) could be chopped a bit smaller but they paired well with the duck and curry! Egg rolls (5 count) tasted fresh and they were good! Drunken noodles taste like regular chow mein from any other take out spot- good but that was my fiancé's dish that he chose last min anyways and he really enjoyed it. We were lucky enough to get parking right in front of the restaurant and we didn't wait longer than 15 mins for our order. When our number was called a table had cleared out and we were able to dine there. We had a good lunch! Price was very reasonable considering how full we were and we took leftovers home. Service was super friendly! As first timers I appreciated Gema's suggestions and patience.

Yelp
This place is so so good! We went here while in town after having discovery this spot on our last trip and it was just as magical as I remembered. The pad see ew was saucy and a little sweet with slightly crunchy (in the best way) broccoli and tender noodles. The broccoli garlic dish was also super flavorful with lots of fried garlic on top and fluffy rice to soak up the delicious sauce. A must stop in San Diego!!

Yelp
Beautiful food, very kind service, asked for our spice levels. Takes about 20 minutes for an order to be prepared, and it is not exactly a restaurant, but more like a take-out place that has some tables out in front where you can wait. We'd planned to eat there, not realizing it wasn't a regular sit-down restaurant, but after 20 minutes chose to take the food home as the sitting section is set up on a super busy sidewalk with lots of dogs and folks passing around us, so it got uncomfortable. But the food was excellent and I would definitely pick-up take out from here. Canned Diet Coke was icy cold, thank you. Really nice food, vegetarian options, too, but the ambiance is more take-out than a restaurant.
google avatar

Philip K.

Yelp
Yes! Neighborhood joint, and I bet you this place is always jamming. Looks to be primarily a takeout joint, but location is quite good, and there is plenty of parking around the corner. Pad Thai was excellent, and I would highly recommend! When we are back in town, I will be sure to hit this place up again.

Yelp
I love this place! I have been in person to pick up food and have doordashed as well. Everything I have tried was excellent. As of today my favorite is the yellow curry with tofu. The tofu was so creamy and went very well with the curry. They also have the BEST crab Rangoon I'm not sure what magic they do to it cause it's essentially just cream cheese and crab but it's the best I've ever had. I order it at every place I see on the menu. You can't leave without trying their mango with sticky rice get extra coconut cream you won't be sorry. The service is always pleasant and smiling. The ambiance is not lacking cause most just order to pick up due to just a few tables outside. So like most people I don't take it all in just grab and go. Either pick up or door dash it's always delicious.

Yelp
Probably the most legit Thai food place in San Diego!!! I've had A LOT of different menu items and everything I've had has been nothing short of amazing. My go to is the drunken noodles usually but I decided to try the Duck Curry this time (since my last duck curry from another whack place was such a disappointment- see my other reviews for more info) Duck curry was divine, might even be my new go to. Well worth the $18. Spice level here is spicier than your typical American Thai eateries. "hot" will have a nice kick but not overpowering. Only outdoor seating at the place, limited. They pack your order to go already so you can eat it at one of their outside tables or just take it with! Enjoy the best Thai in San Diego!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Let's begin by saying THIS IS THE PLACE to eat that Delicious !!! Tasty and full of flavors thai food. By far one of my favorites in the San Diego Area . The Pad Thai OMG soooo delicious , the pineapple rice soo good as well . This place is small but don't be fooled it has a lot of choices to pick from . If you're in this area of North Park Please come on down , Trust me you won't be disappointed !!! The service is on point the food comes out fresh and quick .
google avatar

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai spot in San Diego! Always friendly and never disappoints!!!!
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Small restaurant; order inside and seating is outdoors. Weather was nice and the wait wasn't too bad. The chicken satay was juicy and delicious! The massaman curry with chicken had a good balance of sweet and savory. Ended a late lunch with a sweet & refreshing dessert, sticky rice + mango. This is a food spot I would revisit in the future!
google avatar

Huma M.

Yelp
A San Diego staple! Some of the best Thai I've had in San Diego. Portions are relatively large for the price and the chili oil is SO good- I buy this by the bottle every time I go. Parking can be pretty terrible, seating is minimal, and the line will be out the door on weekends. I recommend ordering ahead, but the worth is always worth it.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
One of the most frustrating parts of Bahn Thai is the lack of parking and the chaos that ensues around dinner time. The food itself is good, I've had better Thai and I've had worse Thai, so I feel like it's solid middle of the road Thai. The portion sizes are appropriate for cost and comparable to similar places. Not a bad spot, but definitely aim to be there at an off-peak time if able!
google avatar

Elvi T.

Yelp
Definitely some of the best Thai food in San Diego and competitive, affordable pricing! Deep flavors, can be spicy if you'd like. Every bite is savory and umami - love their curries and pad Thai and everything here really.
google avatar

Paige N.

Yelp
I still think this place is overpriced but their flavors have always been on point. I really wanted some Tom Ka soup this morning and this was absolutely delicious. It came out to about $14 which I think is pretty over the top for a bowl of soup so it's hard to come back, but I will say the food is always good.
google avatar

Allison T.

Yelp
This place might look like a shack, but this is hands down the best Thai place I've been to in SoCal. Theres a few tables out front, but most of the ordered are made for togo. There is a bit of a wait once you order, but I feel like every Thai place has the same prompt: "ok 20-30 min. Thank you". I ordered the pad kee mow and wow. I was blown away. I am definitely going to be coming back here soon. Overall: 9/10 Food: 9.5/10 Service: 8/10

Valerie V.

Yelp
Some of the best Thai food in San Diego. Their Tom yum soup is delicious. Definitively get their pad Thai. The service is fast and food is always hot even as take out. It's a cute place to sit and eat but they do have a high turn over
google avatar

Nadine B.

Yelp
Love this place! It may not be what you're expecting, but if you're willing to order from a counter and then find a table, this place is amazing. They will bring you the food when it's ready. All tables are outside. There are 2 huge heaters for 5 tables, so you don't have to worry about being cold. The chicken fried rice will blow your mind. The Tom Kah had a delicious flavor, but next time I will try chicken instead of shrimp. The Chicken Pad Thai - delicious and gluten-free! I asked for spice level 4/5 - that was hot! I think next time I'll get 3/5 and get some chili paste on the side to flavor to taste. I will be back!

Yelp
Bahn Thai has been on my "must visit list" for some time after being recommended by a friend of mine. Luckily, I found myself in San Diego 'round dinner time and swung by for a visit. Side note for all folks who haven't been here before: this is primarily a take-out spot with limited seating: meaning that all orders are packed in to-go boxes, along with plastic cutlery, and pre packed chili/hot sauce. There are 3 tables right outside - one 4-top and two 2-tops. For my "treat-yo-self" meal I ordered the fried tofu appetizer and the pad see ew with tofu. This spot was BUSTLING with orders and the kitchen crew was working hard with the made-to-order meals! I waiting for around 10minutes until my order was called and found myself a seat then dig in. OH MY GOSH I couldn't believe how marvelously delicious each and every bite I had was.. my friend who recommended this spot wasn't kidding when he said this was the best place to get some great Thai food. The fried tofu had a perfect crunch on the outside and the accompanying sauce was so good I could drink it. And the pad see ew? I nearly ate the ENTIRE plate because it was SO DARN GOOD. Impeccable flavors, fresh food, and an incredibly delightful experience. I HIGHLY recommend Bahn Thai to anyone and everyone who finds themselves within driving distance of this spot!
google avatar

Bo K.

Yelp
A solid Thai spot in North Park. They only have a few tables outside and the inside space is very small. I do wish it was more of a sit-down restaurant, but they only offer takeout. Parking can be challenging on the street and there is usually a line/wait for food. I think they run their business very efficiently and gave us an accurate estimate for when our food would be ready. The panang curry was delicious and they listen to your order of spice levels well (I am weak). The pad thai was also very good. I see why many people consider this their go-to for Thai food. For me, it's a little out of the way and I don't like to struggle with parking for takeout. If it was more convenient for me, I'd be returning more.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
My favorite San Diego Thai! It's all amazing. Highly recommend Parking sucks but restaurant is worth it. Busy at night

Judy B.

Yelp
Looking for a good red curry, finally found it. Yum, thank you Bahn Thai, you'll be seeing me a lot, now that I found you!!
google avatar

Derek I.

Yelp
Cheap, tasty Thai. This hole in the wall must do tons of business because they literally have 3 registers inside their humble interior for taking orders. We walked up to see a dozen people waiting outside for their numbers to be called - always a good sign. They've got staple Thai dishes and everything we got was executed well. Massaman curry - rich, deep and creamy peanut curry with tender chicken and potatoes. Simple, but feels like the sauce has been cooking the entire day. Hard to find a satisfying massaman and this one hits it out the park. Crab fried rice - amply sized with tons of crab. We ordered medium spice but man did this have a kick in comparison to the curry which was the same spice level. Calamari - super crisp, even for it being pack away in a non breathable plastic container. If you want to "dine in" there's a couple tables outside you can camp out on as diners finish up their meals. We walked down the street to the liquor store to grab water. Looks like others do the same. Parking is as expected for the area, but well worth it.
google avatar

Han L.

Yelp
Good thai food. No indoor seating. Good prices. Big papaya salad. I'd come back if I was nearby.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
I've heard Bahn Thai was one of the best Thai spots in San Diego. It was excellent. We have one particular Thai place near us that we frequent but we might have to add this into the rotation. It didn't taste like just any other Thai place that I've tried. They used slightly more unique flavors and you could differentiate it from most other places. I'll order from them again soon.
google avatar

Pat And Sarah F.

Yelp
The food was so fresh and full of flavor. Highly recommend to order out at this location due to limited seating. (Not toddler friendly lol) I am giving 3 stars because they forgot to make my friend's order after 30 mins of waiting, after we asked about her food they lied and said it would just be right up. After another 15 mins her food actually came out. The food itself was very good but they were really busy for a Friday night when we went.
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
I love Bahn Thai! I always get the same thing: crab rangoons and/or spring rolls, red chicken curry (medium), and mango sticky rice. It's usually enough for two meals, but once in a while, I pack it all away in one sitting. Make sure to get the hot sauce on the side -- it is SO good but will make your nose sweat. I've never dined in; it's always been a to-go order. And the great thing about here is, in my experience, the wait is usually half the time they give you. I'm not saying that will always be the case. Just don't feel too disheartened if they say it'll take 45 minutes. Likely, it'll be closer to 20. Parking is tricky here, but if you go around the corner you can usually find a spot in the neighborhood. I've never not been when it's busy, but they are fast and friendly. It can feel kind of hectic when there's a lot of people in the small space by the register, but take a deep breath and know your belly will be happy soon.
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
I almost forgot to review this place, one of my go to for Thai food. The customer service is always great, people are always friendly and also I've never gotten a wrong item for to go orders here. Pad Thai, Panang and Yellow curry, crab fried rice, drunken noodles are all very good! Place is small but clean, as far as Thai food goes? It'll be hard to top this one!
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is always super solid. But it is an absolute hassle to find parking and get food from the University Heights location. I'm surprised local law enforcement lets people just park their cars all along Park Blvd and clog up the streets while they wait for their food. Please re-open the Hillcrest location soon or give the space up to another owner that can actually re-open the doors to that prime location.
google avatar

Stan S.

Yelp
The wife and I tried this place out for the first time. Very small spot, about 5 tables to sit outside. The food here was very good and authentic. We got the Panang Curry with duck & Drunken Noodle with duck. Both very tasty and they did not skimp on the duck. I would highly recommend calling in your order first as it does take awhile to get your food. Cant wait to come back and try something different from the menu.
google avatar

Jackie T.

Yelp
This place is super small but cozy. They have maybe 6 tables available for you to sit at. The parking is a little to find but don't let that discourage you because this place is must. The inside was super clean and bright. The food was very tasty. I suggest order online or phone because it takes awhile to get your food. The food here is legit, super fresh and authentic. If you have not tried this place out please stop by you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Food is great. Mild for little one, medium for me. Good sized portions, usually have leftovers. Limited seating. Pretty quick service. Usually we do takeout.

Yelp
Hands down, my favorite Thai places in all of SoCal. I travel wide n far to seek great food and for some reason San Diego/Carlsbad have some of the best food. Everytime I visit SD, I have to make a stop here. I order a bunch of dishes so it can last a week and I can savor the food when I get back to LA Co. The food is high quality and fresh. The food is very authentic. It reminds me of high quality hotel/restaurant style Thai food that I had in Thailand. I cannot pick a favorite dish because everything is good but their Tom Yum soup, Papaya Salad, Chicken Satay, Pai Grapow, Pad Thai.... I love how ypu can customize the level of spiciness. Man~~ it hits the spot. I love their chili oil. The food is perfectly seasoned..not too salty, not yoo sweet, just right. I've been craving Thai food lately and I have to make a trip to San Diego just for the food.
google avatar

Eleni M.

Yelp
Truly amazing! From their vege egg rolls, to tofu dishes, this place is yummy! My little one and I picked up our food for beach picnic and their portions, flavor and service was spot on. Looking forward to the next time we are in the area to order again!
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
Ban Thai offers a variety of authentic Thai dishes. The service is quick, friendly, and helpful. It is probably one of the better "Thai restaurants" in San Diego! This location is more of a 'pick up' spot rather than to dine in. Seating is very limited, so if you find a table open take it. - Parking can be a challenge at times. My go to order is the Beef Pad See Ew & Chicken Yellow Curry: The Pad See Ew is good, well-portion, and they do not skimp you out with any protein you order. The yellow curry is probably one of the best I've had. It is delicious, flavorful, and full of vegetables and protein. I usually get it hot/or xx hot. I highly recommend these levels if you enjoy spicy. (Be aware: their spicy level can be spicy. I'd order "mild" if you don't like spicy).
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
Parking: We stopped by for take out at 7pm on a Tuesday and parking was pretty tough all around. There are a few ADA parking at each parking area. Ambience: fast pace take out spot with very limited outdoor dining seats. None indoor. Service: The service was very friendly. We were Contemplating on buying a jar of their hot chili oil and the staff offer a few free along with our take out to try frost and definitely would be purchasing on next visit. Food: Crispy Fried Calamari - crispy flavorful batter Crab Fried Rice - good flavors would be better with chunky crab meat than shreds Bai Grapow w/ Chicken - Amazing! would recommend spicy with white rice Three Flavored Fish- good flavoring but a bit too saucy. Supports Military: No Discount Overall: Good food and neighborhood location for take out. Not ideal for dinning in or out as many people are lined up all over waiting for their orders.

Yelp
Heard about this place form my friend who went to SDSU. First, there's no indoor seating. There's 5 tables outside of the restaurant where you can sit and eat but it's first come first serve style so you may want to plan that accordingly. There are a lot of people going in an out picking up/ordering food throughout so be mindful of that as well! Ordering process was very simple and easy. My friends and I came here on a Sunday night and it was busy to say the least. Make sure your food under 1 order because they're constantly taking phone orders so even if you order right after your friend you may have 3-5 orders added in between so just a quick tip for that. I got the stir fry egg plants with chicken with spicy level hot (there's 5 levels super hot being the spiciest). Served on top of rice of your choice. The egg plant was soft and flavored very well. Chicken was on the thinner side which helped not over take the dish from the vegetables. Spice level was perfect for me as well! I tasted the hint of spice after my first bite but nothing painful (at least for me). Service was 10/10. Very friendly and responsive staffs even though the place was being stormed by non stop orders on the phone as well people coming in for pick up or to order in the store. Give it a try if you're near university heights! Good to take a break from all the delicious Mexican food in San Diego.

Yelp
Great, flavorful Thai food with generous portions, and nice, endearing service from authentic workers who care about their cuisine. I loved the crab rangoons, pad see ew, Tom yum soup, and pineapple fried rice we ordered from them. They season well. I don't think I'm a spice god, but I didnt find spice level 2-3 honestly that spicy at all. Unfortunately, parking is very hard to find. you can spend up to 10 mins looking for a spot and then likely have to hazard lights it in a residential area. The restaurant is small without any indoor seating. Sad because wanted to eat here, but there's only a few tables outdoors, and it was mostly crowded by everyone waiting to order or to pick up their food. I would still recommend this place, just for take out or to go. It's a solid place for good, spicy Thai food. Tasted great as leftovers as well!

Yelp
Decent choice for takeout Thai. Busy, small restaurant with limited seating (all outdoor on the sidewalk). It's very popular so you should call in ahead to place an order. The food was very good. Be mindful that the medium spicy is probably a 6 or 7/10 somewhere else. If you only vaguely like spicy, get the mild. I ordered the crab fried rice and the pineapple curry (the August special) and thought they were both delicious. I want to come back and try the lemongrass chicken and the mango sticky rice.

Yelp
The appetizers at this Thai restaurant are among the best that I've ever had in Asian Cuisine! The Tofu Spring Rolls were full of fresh vegetables and crisp leafy romaine. In fact, they were overflowing with vegetables, as the portion size for this appetizer was especially large for Spring Rolls. The peanut sauce that accompanied them was the perfect consistency, rather than a thick paste as well. The Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps were even better... The quarter head of iceberg lettuce was fresh and a substantial portion for assembling the Lettuce Wraps. The Chicken was minced with chopped carrots and spiced to perfection. It was so good, that I dished some of it over the rice and ate it as a meal. Bravo on the appetizers Bahn Thai! I will keep you in mind for catering a party in the future.

Yelp
I recently tried Bahn Thai in University Heights, and it left a positive impression with its flavorful Thai dishes. The small outdoor seating area makes it more suitable for takeout, and although the wait for our order was about 35 minutes due to its popularity, the dishes were well worth it. We opted for the medium spicy basil fried rice with beef, which was excellent. The medium spicy pad Thai with pork also impressed us with its rich flavors. However, the mango sticky rice fell short on sweetness, affecting the overall experience. Despite the minor setback with the dessert, I'll be returning for their outstanding rice and noodle dishes. If they enhance the mango sticky rice, this place would easily earn five stars from me. Highly recommended for Thai food enthusiasts!

Yelp
Yes. No question about it. Amazing food for a really good price! 10/10 Food + Service. Nice outdoor seating but imo I'd rather enjoy it as takeout. Forgot to take food pics, it was so good!

Yelp
The flavors are absolutely delicious here! This is an awesome take out spot. We cane here on a Friday around 6:30 ish and had to wait about 30+ minutes for our order. We sat on the tables outside and chilled while we waited. The chairs were comfy! We had the chicken satay-- the peanut sauce is the perfect combination of sweet and salty. I had the green curry with chicken- mild. It was so sooo good. I could tell they fried the eggplant and basil separately which was do nice because they were not dull or soggy in the sauce. My parter had the bacon fried rice on special. It was okay. He enjoyed it. We were busy entertaining a little one so we didnt get pics, but we did snap up their Thaiger sauce to send to our friends in DC who recommended this place to us. If you're a light eater you could easily split an entree and an app. If you've got an average appetite I would suggest getting your own plate. My partner finished his plate. The kid ate the whole 340 ml container of rice, and i ate 80% of my meal and was perfectly full.

Yelp
Very delicious Thai food! We picked up an order of crab fried rice, drunken noodles and some type of chicken rice bowl. Everything was so fresh and tasty. The crab fried rice was my absolute favorite!! The workers inside were very nice and I will for sure return next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Soo soo good!!! I can see why this place has a constant stream of customers. Now i know where to go whenever i crave Thai. We got pad thai with chicken, crab fried rice, papaya salad, and panang curry with pork. The stand out was the crab fried rice (10/10). The flavor was full of depth and each bite gives you a good amount of crab. Pad thai was excellent! (8.5/10) I only know one place in Bay Area that is better. Probably best pad thai in SD area. Papaya salad (9.2/10) was soo good and refreshing. I got a medium spice and it was super spicy! Panang curry was good, but what you would expect. I may try their duck curry next. Would 10/10 recommend this place for some fast thai food. Be warned that the seating situation isnt amazing- only 5 small outdoor tables and tons of flies.

Yelp
Wow! What an amazing Thai restaurant. Randomly came across it by walking on the street and thank goodness we made the right decision by eating here. I loved the Seafood Pad Thai. The Crab Rangoon was probably the best one i've ever had in my life. Food came out quick and service was good. Seating is only outdoor, but saw tons of people ordering to go.
