Where to Drink Margs and Do Good Around NYC | Eater

"Beacon locals flock to this Mexican grill for its empanadas and taco salad, among other dishes—though its bar menu is not to be overlooked. You can bet there’s an Astral drink on the menu. This one pairs the spirit with elderflower liqueur, muddled cucumber, agave, jalapeno, fresh lime, and a Tajin rim." - Rebecca Strassberg

Google
Baja 328 is absolutely worth the trip. The cocktails are great and the tacos are very tasty, everything we had was delicious. The atmosphere is loud but intimate, and the staff was very friendly, focused and prompt. It’s always a delight to see wait staff that know their business with little wasted movement. We will definitely eat here again next time we’re in Beacon.

Stopped in late afternoon on a whim. Liked the decor, kind of reminded me of Texas. My kid had tacos, I had the taco salad. Portions were large, food was very good and my drink was marvelously spicy. Prices were very reasonable - overall an enjoyable bite to eat and a quick drink.

Google
Genuinely some of the worst tasting food I’ve ever had. Went with fajitas and it tasted like reheated Asian frozen chicken and bell peppers. Incredibly salty and dry chicken. Basic margaritas were watery and barely tasted of lime.

Google
I've been here multiple times. The food was always extremely flavorfull and tasty. Most times the services are quite large and I would have to take it home. Drinks always sounded unique and tasty-- if I ever had one though it was not memorable. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for mexican in the area. Especially great during the summer as they are able to completely open the front and get fresh air.

Good atmosphere and nice waiters. They have good Tacos which are 3 for $18 and their seasonal apple cinnamon margarita was good. However, it was full of ice.

Popped in on a Wednesday evening. We had intended to go for restaurant week, but decided on the regular menu instead. To start, we did the cheese fundido, and let me tell you friends, this was straight up cheese heaven. It was essentially a queso, but in the way that a Cadillac is just a car. It was incredibly creamy, with a silky texture. The chips were a little thicker than a regular tortilla chip, allowing you to scoop lakes of the fundido on to your chip and waterfall it into your mouth. I even started hunting for chips with air bubbles to allow me to fill that beautiful bubble with cheese. It was a straight up cheese waterpark at our table, and i know everyone else staring was just jealous. After that, i had chosen 3 tacos - buffalo calamari, shrimp, and something else that I don't remember because a cheese coma had started to kick it. My friend got a sampler platter of some kind that i vaguley remember him saying was really good as i slipped away into a cheesy dream.

Baja has great food and drinks but Mike created a phenomenal experience. His level of service was amazing. Friendly, kind, answered all of our questions, funny, personable. It was my mother’s birthday and he just exceeded all expectations will definitely go back. Then take it a step further left my debit card and he found a way to contact me and inform me. Let’s talk about above and beyond. FANTASTIC JOB!!!! Thank you so much!!! Integrity is the key to any level of success and Mike is a true example of that.

Google
One of the most consistent places I have ever eaten. Every single time the food is perfect. Drinks are great also.

Yelp
Love going here. The entrance opens like a garage, to the left is a lonnng Tequila bar with 3 rows of your favorite Agave. Very comfortable, food is delicious. Service was spot on. BTW There are many different restaurants on this Main St. in Beacon.

Yelp
Located right on Main st in Beacon, NY. Street parking as well as a lot behind the establishment. Greeted soon as we walked in & served water immediately. Staff are very nice. Our waiter was cool but could of been more attentive since he only checked in on us once when the food came out then another time to ask if we needed boxes, etc. The drinks are always great & strong! The food was hot, fresh & delicious! The empanadas are also a hit -OMG filled with lots of meat & cheese. I've never seen Street corn served the way they serve it..cute & perfect for sharing!

Yelp
Honestly surprised by the low rating. My friend and I came here when I went to visit her in Beacon and it was poppin - we came for dinner around 7 pm on a Friday night and it was fairly busy. The menu is pretty extensive and has a whole bunch of taco options, the staff was friendly and we did not have to wait too long before we were served. We decided to get the nachos which was absolutely delicious. The portion size is huge though so between the two of us we were still unable to finish - you can pay extra to add a variety of different proteins in here. I decided to go with the three taco deal - which including the nachos was way too much food. I got the ahi tuna - which was very taste, it was in a hard shell taco instead of a soft shell one and it was so crispy and delicious. The al pastor taco was just alright. The shrimp taco was also delicious, super crispy and yummy. Overall great food, a little bit on the louder side so if you prefer more quiet dining then this place might not be for you but it did not bother us! Would recommend coming here!

Yelp
I guess it depends on the time of day; there have been days when the place was filled with families with small children. It can get noisy The menu takes a nouveau approach to Mexican-Tex/Mex cuisine. Not bad, but not what you might expect. You have a vast choice of tequilas and mezcals as well as specialty cocktails to choose from. The staff is knowledgeable.

Yelp
Tasty food and lots of tequila drinks. But if you are craving that authentic Mexican flavor, this ain't the place.

Yelp
Happy a shrimp quesadilla NEVER FAILS the staff is AMAZING, love the vibes, it is just a happy place you could feel it as soon as you go inside. Izzy the chef never disappoints. This time I skipped the drink because I was on my lunch break. This place never seems to disappoint. I went a couple of weeks ago for my birthday as well and tipped my first drink over totally my fault. As I was cleaning it up one of the staff members appeared with a rag and said no worries I will clean it up for you and the other staff member was already making my drink for me. We had the nachos with steak and let me just tell you, one person cannot finish that the portions are great. When we asked for the bill they bought out a slice of cake for me. It was so nice of them. Definitely a great place

Yelp
Came here during the beacon food drink event. They did not participate but we needed to cool off. Place was crowded and we were seated immediately We got an appetizer of quesadilla and a mezcal mixed drink. Sat us down quick and served us politely and efficiently :) Place served its purpose Menu looked good but we were full from the event And just wanted to spread some love for beacon shops

Yelp
Just came here for a light dinner. Was very impressed with the food. Cool ambiance too and músic. Had the 3 taco combo. Ahi tuna, shrimp, scallop. Delicious! Keep in mind there's a surcharge for using credit card so bring cash. Will be back to try other things when in the area. My favorite is ahi tuna but I also like the scallops and shrimp. Came with beans and rice.

Yelp
Lunch spot for a day trip to Beacon! My friends had the tacos, the Shrimp tacos being their favorite. I had the taco salad which was superb, best I've ever had. Comes in a taco shell bowl. We ordered the nachos for the tables with shredded chicken (on the side for the pescatarian in our group) the seasoning was very tasty. It's a tequila bar, we had Casa Azul Tequila on the rocks, but the true star of the show was their seasonal margarita, Guava coconut with a toasted coconut rim. The server was very friendly and knowledgeable and made excellent recommendations. Truly great spot!!

Yelp
I loved the indoor outdoor feel. At Baja 328, the front entrance has garage doors; perfect for those warm weather days and inviting for people walking about on Main Street. The taco salad with shrimp was everything i was hoping for and more. It was full of fresh ingredients and flavorful, juicy and sizable shrimp. Highly recommend and will definitely be having it again, maybe switching it up and trying to with the steak or chicken offered.

Yelp
I am a serious taco fan so of course I liked this place. I gave the waiter, Nick, a 5 for service. He was so nice, came over to the table several times, and was an awesome server. The hostess, not too friendly. The ambience was awesome... A rustic taco-ria. The empanadas were OK but would have preferred more meat than cheese in it. The loaded french fries were yummy of course... How can you go wrong with that?. My favorite taco was the scallop taco and the shrimp taco. The chipotle chicken taco was good also. Was not a fan of the pork belly taco as it was too thick and dried out. My one recommendation would be to offer chips and salsa, instead of pico de gallo with chips. I will be back.

Yelp
Great experience with my friends also with an unexpected Don Josè truck outside! Food: the appetizer of popcorn chicken with the sauces were underwhelming, though the sauces were really good. My main course meal was fantastic, a Buffalo chicken chimichanga, which came recommended by the waitress when I asked. Everyone at the table tried and really liked it. My wife enjoyed her tacos and my friends enjoyed their meals (tacos and fajitas). Aesthetic: deceivingly long restaurant with a nice bar area, although it does feel a little tight which doesn't help during COVID. Service: when our waitress was there she was fantastic, but it seemed like it wasn't really all that great, maybe because they were busy.

Yelp
I found the food to be pretty terrible. Runny, watery enchiladas, like they had been microwaved right out of the freezer. They also had a margarita that was overly sweet and low on tequila. To top it all off, the waitress seemed 100% disinterested in checking on us, refilling water, etc., despite the fact that it was 90% empty (she did seem keen to clear our plates within minutes of serving us the "food")... she seemed more interested in her phone. We give it two stars for the fact that despite being disinterested in helping us, the people there seemed like nice people, and the location is great. But you'd be better off going somewhere else.

Yelp
Food and drinks were amazing-the Cajun chicken tacos were so good! The staff was also very friendly and attentive. Lots of options for tequila!

Yelp
I had to take out never been inside the place. It looks very comfortable. Right on Main Street. The food was terrific.

Yelp
This restaurant was a good place for a post hike dinner. Their portions were huge and very nourishing. We shared the short rib quesadilla and the taco salad with chicken. The quesadilla was extremely heavy and oily. Normally not what I would go for, but after a long hike, I gobbled it up. The taco salad complemented it well. It had a ton of veggies and fresh dollop of guac on top. The amount of chicken was insane too. So flavorful! We also got a strawberry jalapeño margarita. It was spicier than other jalapeño margaritas we've tried, in a good way. Our only gripe is that it took a long time to get water. No one stopped by to check on us during our meal until we were done eating so that was our only opportunity to get water.

Yelp
Service was great, nice vibe. The food came quickly and everything tasted phenomenal. Nice place to stop into for food if you're walking Main Street in Beacon or if you're in the area. Have went several times

Yelp
I want to come back on my first review. I have been a few times after that first time and I have lost a lot of The desire to keep coming back. The drinks are still very good I will give them that but the food is to be desired. The portions are extremely big but I really don't think the flavor is there and it's a little pricey for the food. I mean obviously you're getting a large portion but it's a large portion of something that's not really worth finishing. The one thing that is extremely good are the nachos, those are by far my favorite and I would suggest anyone to get them. Long and short only go there for happy hour if you need to go for happy hour order a couple margaritas and only get the nachos
google avatar

Faye P.

Yelp
The food here was great until I received my bill and there was a $2.50 surcharge for using a credit card. I was never informed that there would be a surcharge for using a credit card ( as the law requires) by the waitress and it is not written on the menu. Credit card fees are part of running a business and should be paid by the business not the consumer. If you want to absorb the cost of the fees find another way or don't take credit cards. Considering filing a BBB complaint for this unethical practice.

Yelp
I hate being THAT person who walks in and wants to order before closing. Granted it was a Friday and I thought that the kitchen would be open later than 10pm but I was wrong. Fortunately for us though the wait staff was super friendly and had no issues putting in a ticket for us. We picked some items right off the bat, ordered probably way too much food but it turned out to be well worth it! Don't recall what tacos the ladies had but they were mostly meat versions. I ordered the seared ahi tuna, scallop and fried shrimp. HOLE LE CHIT. GET HERE AND TRY THIS STUFF!!! Those three tacos alone were so worth going out for! Even the tots with the dips were so perfectly crispy and damn, I want them now! Salsa and chips was slamming since it was more of a pico salsa which happens to be my fav. I would skip the side of rice and beans only because you don't even need it. The flight of blanco tequila I had was dope too, and I really can't stand tequila!! I think I was possessed that night but hey, it turned out great!
google avatar

CM R.

Yelp
The service was great and the waitresses were so nice. We got seated right away, so that was awesome! The reason I gave three stars was because of the saltiness of the food. The chicken fajita was sooo overly salty it felt criminal. I drank an entire glass of water, trying to balance it out. The food was very flavorful and the portions were generous, but lay off the salt! Not needed.

Yelp
Don't let the loud and crowded atmosphere with obnoxious music draw you in. The two stars are for playing a house version of Lion King. It was both entertaining and a little frightening. From the fly in our pitcher of Paloma's to the same chicken used in apps, and all the mains, this place left us hungry with heartburn. Food is downright bad - enchiladas were swimming in cheese and sauces and the chicken inside was a pile of salt. My fiancé ordered 3 tacos and only ate one. Carnitas drowned in overly sweet sauce was still somehow dry. How a taco drenched in sauce is dry is a mystery to me. We had an app, tacos and one main with a pitcher - $130 tab and instant regret

Yelp
White people taco night Rice and beans were not good, how do you not have refried beans!? The tacos were fine; definitely liked the fish and seafood ones. This place is decent if you want fusion but a little pricy. Good staff and friendly service

Yelp
We stopped into Baja 328 to have a cocktail on our way to dinner elsewhere. We grabbed a table on the front sidewalk and were told that we would need to order some sort of food dish along with our beverages, based on a recent COVID-19 regulation. After already having several meals that day and with our supper looming in the near future, we were thrilled when our server offered a $1 basket of tortilla chips as a "lighter" option. The chips had an ideal amount of salt, but were extremely fried. My drink, which I believe contained vodka, strawberry, and basil, was strong and delicious. Based on the quality of the chips, I probably would not rush back to Baja 328 for a more substantial meal, though I certainly would go back for drinks, especially to try one of their interesting margaritas flavors.

Yelp
Amazing food . I got the chance to try new fall drinks amazing Leo JR is killing it with new drinks and new fall ideas .

Yelp
I'm giving this 4 stars mostly because the service was great. My friend and I came here last night on a whim. She ordered tacos and I ordered the ceviche. The ceviche was mediocre and so were the tacos. The service though was great. We sat at the bar and were taken care of by a very lovely bartender. She took our order right away and made sure we were pleased with everything but did not interrupt us during our conversations. If you're looking for great food, this isn't the place but if you're looking for a fun bar for date night or just to grab some quick food and a drink at the bar, this is a good option.
google avatar

Yelp
Been here a few times with friends and I've had good experiences each time. There's a variety of things to try and choose from. Serving portions were good and food was fresh.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was excellent! And the drinks were delicious. Everything was very affordable and the atmosphere was very fun. On a Saturday they are usually very busy so service is alittle delayed but I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome! I had an amazing time, the food is great and the place is cool, I think it would be a cool spot to come to at night too, but my date and I went in the evening. Great place to have groups for sure!

Yelp
Came here with the SO to meet up with a couple of friends. Our friends like this place, and it seemed popular enough, so we figured it ought to be good. We were lucky that there wasn't a wait to get seated, and we were served right away. I got their veggie tacos, which also came with a side of rice and beans. The tacos were pretty good, and the rest of my party enjoyed their respective choices as well. They have a full bar and a few specialty cocktails on their menu as well, though I chose not to drink. There's also a parking lot, which we were not aware of initially.

Yelp
This is not the review I wanted to write... but here we go. I've dined at 328 many times since they opened, and have generally always had good food with good service; most of menu items are delicious (especially the soups and tacos) and they have an unrivaled selection of tequila with a bar staff that knows their stuff. My only prior complaints were that (especially during summer months) it can feel a lot like a college frat party, and the noise level is generally annoying (unless you don't want to have a conversation while eating). Since they've never addressed all the hard surfaces, I'd assume this is by design, so stick with lunch if noise is an issue for you. Recently I had takeout - my order consisting of the family meal of 'street tacos', with black beans and rice, and wings. I was informed that 'street tacos' were similar to their regular offerings, but with only cilantro and onion toppings. What we picked up had no toppings, and the fillings were nearly inedible. The fish was oddly reminiscent of fish sticks, the beef and chicken were dry and tasteless, and the pork was only marginally better. The beans and rice were similarly disappointing, and the wings (while tastier) had an unpleasant chewy texture. My first thought was 'hey, maybe it's just an off night', and looked on their website for a contact email. There was none (not usually a good sign). Next I found their FB page, and sent them a friendly FYI message. No response. Hence the review - on a good day they're a 4-star, but based on my recent meal and lack of response, they get a 3.

Anand B.

Yelp
Great upscale Mexican dive bar. The most expansive offerings of tequilas. They have sampler menu for the tequilas as well. Food is very authentic. Does not have the standard Mexican restaurent vibe. Service friendly and assist you selection of tequilas and food. Will be there again! The challenge is parking in Beacon. We lucked out and got a spot close by. Great evening. Enjoyed it.

Yelp
Not many vegan options. The ones they had were not good. Need impossible meat or other creative option

Helen E.

Yelp
Oh where do I start? I'm glad this place is open until late on Main Street. It's a really big place with lots of seating. The workers are nice and they are clearly short staffed for the amount of business they get! Now, onto the food, we ordered too much for two people, but the tacos were just awful. It was very dry and we had to drench it in hot sauce and lime juice. The beef ones and the rice and beans tastes like school food. The fish tacos were sooo sad looking, you can't call those fish tacos! The two stars are for the drinks - I recommend the Tito's watermelon lemonade drink!

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite and a few drinks on a Saturday night. Good thing we made reservations because Baja 328 was obviously the popular place you wanted to be. Every table was full of happy customers chatting and enjoying a good meal. We just wanted to stop in for a small bite and a few drinks to start off our night. We ordered empanadas, shrimp quesadillas and nachos with guacamole. I enjoyed sipping on my watermelon mint drink but for the price I was disappointed in how "weak" it was on the alcohol. The mezcal was also a bit disappointing. On the other hand- most of the food items we picked were phenomenal. Very authentic and served to us beautifully. The guacamole was very plain though. It was the most basic menu item and it wasn't up to par. I noticed that the employees were working hard. When guests left their table someone was right over to clean up. Other employees seemed happy and attentive to their tables. Our waitress seemed a bit tired. With all that said, I wanted to love this place but it's not likely that I'd return. To start- the pricing did not seem to fairly match the quality or quantity of food items received. Our table was small and it is uncomfortable for taller people. I noticed that the place also attracted a certain crowd that could act out a bit (women coupled up in men's bathroom to by pass the line to women's bathroom. Men banging hard and getting loud demanding they get out). Although I enjoy a loud and busy atmosphere, Baja 328 is on the smaller more intimate side, making the noise a little uncomfortable for a meal.

Athina L.

Yelp
We were seated in back of the restaurant what a dark, gloomy, dismal, and depressing space. The loudness was unbearable. A staff was moving tables and chairs and slamming them down loudly right next to us while we were trying to eat. We were hoping to be seated towards the front. This space was really awful. Our server was great, our cocktails were great! (Spicy mango margarita) Empanada was bland as was the accompanying "crema". It was actually not a crema. It was a thinned out bland green sauce that had no flavor. Our tacos were also bland. We asked for salt to help elevate it-but it only helped so much. I remember coming here a few years back and the food was flavorful. This was a disappointment. What a waste of a "cheat day"

Yelp
The place was pretty dirty and felt a bit uncomfortable to dine at. The food was delicious though and the cocktail was good enough but have had better

Yelp
The service was fast and very friendly. The atmosphere was eye appealing. The latin cuisine was authentic, plated very nicely, hot, plentiful and deliciosos!!!! Worth the trip to get here. I should mention the Bartender went out of his way to meet us and was so nice!

Yelp
Randomly walked in here while visiting the town of Beacon and am I glad we did. Interior is very rustic and clean. We had the $14 three tacos: steak, barbacoa and shrimp. Steak was my favorite; well seasoned, tender and oh so delicious. Barbacoa was great too and the fried shrimp was good. We also had the southwest platter which was pork belly taco, buffalo chicken chimichangas and carnitas taco. Pork belly was very tender and carnitas were well seasoned. I have to admit I was not a big fun of the buffalo chicken chimichangas; it was on the sour side of things. This platter came with yellow rice (needed salt), black beans, guacamole (now I'm not sure what but something was off with this guacamole, it had all the ingredients but the taste was not good) and salsa. Our waitress was very attentive and cheerful.

Nikky D.

Yelp
Bar top was gross and the bartenders were not attentive. Drink was nothing special. Overall the staff is not on top of cleanliness or tidiness in restaurants in Beacon and it's disappointing.
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
Service and hostess attitude is horrible. Sat with an empty drink for 15 minutes before waitress came back. Not busy at all! Food has gone way down hill. Scallops way over cooked pork belly extremely tough! Used to be good now is just mediocre food at best tourist trap. Many better places to eat at in Beacon and fishkill. Walk down the street to carters for an amazing meal or cafe maya for Mexican so much better.
google avatar

Lori L.

Yelp
Amazing strawberry jalapeño margarita! We ordered flautas, paella, beef brisket burrito and coconut short ribs bowl. All were very good, large enough portions for another meal. Service was good too. Numerous sporting events were on tv.
google avatar

Sade A.

Yelp
This place needs a manager customer service it's very bad and that's a huge no no especially when your sitting here waiting for 20 min and no asked if we have been helped bummer.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Drinks were good and nice environment to sit and have a drink on a nice day. Calamari was overly fried, dry and salty, empanada was okay, the tacos, just no, and in stark contrast to calamari I think no salt is added to rice and beans, or any seasoning for that matter. Service was good.
google avatar

Ian E.

Yelp
Ordered 4 tacos. 1 was great, the blackboard special. The carnitas and al pastor are average. Drinks were good though. We ordered a watermelon-mint margarita and a Mexican mule. Service was good as well, though the servers should be a bit more knowledgeable about the tequilas given their extensive menu.

Greg K.

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch on a Friday. Got a bowl of chicken tortilla soup, which was a huge bowl (red flag) and completely inedible. Way too salty, grease running up and down the sides of the bowl. Actually was disgusting. Thankfully, the waitress took it off my bill when I couldn't eat it. Ordered 3 tacos which were messy and pretty below average flavorwise. Definitely will not be back here again unless I want a margarita with no food.

Samantha J.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service Morgan is the best server! I love this place! Drinks are spectacular! And I love their burritos

Catherine P.

Yelp
Yum, yum, yum. We had tuna nachos and a trio of different tacos - barbacoa, carnitas, and chicken. So good. Another diner had street corn that arrived on a platter and looked incredible. I had to ask - "how was the corn?" Answer: "Unbelievably fantastic!" Nice decor and when nice, they open the front windows. Good customer service too.
