Google
Quick service, not as good as the Alhambra location, but still great value. They are cash only and have good daily deals. Fish tacos on Tuesday are $ 0.99, a great deal but the consistency was a little bit iffy. Some were fried a little bit harder than others but I really try to give some slack on the deals. Worth a try, for a quick bite to eat.

Google
I LOVE this place! I've been to three different locations and none disappointed. Their fish tacos (pictured) are amazingly delicious! They do have other foods like: carne asada, pastor, chicken tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and some, which by the way are very good as well. I HIGHLY recommend Baja Cali Fish & Tacos!!! (Aguas frescas pictured are horchata and fresa & I think cucumber.)

Brandon Lau

Google
Love their fish tacos, i just want someone show up at my door and surprise me with a big plate with this and ill be the happiest man ever. Lol friendly service and clean. They do have daily taco specials, Check their website to see or call them. One of my fave go to taco places other then king taco(although i do prefer king tacos pastor better).

Lalo Valenzuela

Google
Came to get the shrimp tacos special and they had this sign that said "On Lunch Sorry" 30 minutes before they close. A bit unprofessional if you ask me. How are you gonna go on lunch when you're about to close. I tried knocking to ask what time he will open again because I can see the guy in there but he just ignored me. Food is great but the service obviously need a lot of work.

Google
This spot is definitely the spot for some bomb fish tacos. I don't order anything else so I wouldn't know how good other items on the menu are. When I'm too lazy to get dressed and hit up an actual authentic Mexican restaurant, I hit up Baja Cali. The frescas are also legit! I always ask for the chia/cucumber and strawberry mix. I wish it wasn't so sweet though. But that's okay, I bring the fresca home and split it into two so that I can add water and drink it the way I like it. Customer service is not the best, but it's not bad either. The staff is friendly enough.

Google
Omg!! The fish tacos are effing AMAZING!!! And the dollar taco Tuesday is perfect! I can seriously eat these tacos ALLLLL day!!!! The only small disappointment I stumbled upon was the rice. I expected orange (Mexican) rice but it was white rice with veggies in it (bleh) other than that the tacos were perfect a big piece of fish with a perfect amount of toppings. This is definitely my new go to fish taco place especially since I live literally 5 minutes away ♥️

Google
Baja Cali taco is my fav but everything I've tried had been delicious. Glad they got rid of taco fix and but this place. The prices after great for great food. I've been a regular customer.

Located in the heart of Monrovia, Ca this small taco joint is known for its famous (bass) fish tacos. They have daily specials which makes eatting here very inexpensive. I had the Chicken Vegan Tacos at $3.49 each.

Yelp
If you're browsing the reviews to convince you to try it, just know I have been back for their dinner service on three separate occasions and can't wait to come back for brunch. The first time here, it was a very busy night. The only seat left was at the bar. However, the staff were very accommodating and even stayed open later to serve all guests. As a seafoodie, the dishes that keep me coming back are the pulpo a la diabla, tlayuda de tsajo (tuna), and sopa de mariscos. The taco de chicharron is huge and also one of my favorites, especially with the pickled nopales served to top it off. Each dish is prepared to perfection, with complex flavors shining through. My compliments to the chef! The service at Carnal makes you feel at home, warm like so with your tios and tias. Flor was incredible - sweet, attentive, and knowledgeable. On a slower night, my friends and I were served by Roberto and were delighted to learn more about Oaxacan cuisine and ingredients, not previously familiar with. All in all, a new highland park favorite.

Yelp
super great food with a twist. you can bring your own beer as they dont have any alcoholic beverages. conveniently there is ice cold beer spot across the street. we didn't see it until we sat down. parking can get little hard but there is metro station around the 7 eleven. we got seated right away since we were okay on sitting between a semi large party. we explorere the menu carefully and ordered few things to share. omg the octopus was super soft and flavorful and raw tuna with grasshopper was good with all the sauces they drizzle on top especially the plantain mash. as our main dish we ordered duck plate and the duck was superb. I love that this place is open kitchen and their passionfruit drink was super passionfruity. loved the corn that was hanging. we saw this place on yelp and decided to do a girls night out. when I posted the pictures on IG it was too new it didn't even show them under locations. little bit far but worth the drive if you guys are nearby. service is great too.

Yelp
Really good food. I was surprised by how good it was. We had half of the menu and no regrets even though it's so much food haha. Sunday night after the new year is very chill as expected. So no wait. They are worth coming to and coming back to.

Yelp
First and foremost the owners happened to be there and served us as their server called in sick. Was so impressed with how well they took care of everyone. If felt very homey and as if you were part of the family. I would not choose Oaxacan food as a go to but they made excellent dishes. Will be back!

Yelp
This is the cutest secret in Highland Park. It's a small storefront with a modern vibe. Not many tables, a few 4 tops and a great community table. The service was on point, if the menu is adventurous ask and you will be pointed in an amazing direction. There should be a line out the door! Oaxacan cuisine, vegan and meat dishes. Try the fermented pineapple drink sooo good!

Yelp
Let's cut to the chase. The food was not bad, mediocre at best. But the service and ambiance made up for the quality of the food. Would I return, probably not. Check it out for yourself, remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yelp
Incredible food. Unassuming interiors but the food is incredibly memorable. While we were there all I could hear is with the patrons around us is how amazed they were with each dish. Many audible "wow"s. The communal seating also allowed us to make great connections with those sitting next to us. Overall a great friendly vibe.

Yelp
This place is new and I couldn't wait to try it after seeing the menu. Came here on a Saturday morning after my hike and it was well worth it. The inside decor is very nice and interesting. Greeted and was able to sit anywhere in the restaurant, mind you the place is small, seating is limited. Started with cafe de olla and it was nice and strong! Memelas Trio- mini sopes with three different flavors and honestly, you really don't miss meat when your eating these. 2 out of 3 didn't have meat but the flavor and freshness in the sope was so good. Breakfast and AVO sope-so good, stacked and flavorful! Mole toast-a nice size bollio on the bottom two sunnyside up egg on top and just smothered in mole sauce. UGH...sooo good. The three different salsa were really fresh tasting and good but my all time favorite is the salsa matcha! you can add that to everything. I can't wait to come back and try the dinner menu! Super happy this place is another addition to highland park!

Yelp
the chef prepares oaxacan style dishes himself. if you ever had the simón truck tacos or aguachile, you know he throws down. while simón is seafood focused, this spot has something for everyone. i had vegetarian dishes myself. i sat at the bar. was served complementary marinated fresh pineapple to start. i ordered a nopales salad and the mushroom huitlacoche dish. also had the pineapple tepache to drink. all were delish. i asked for salsa and got three housemade salsas. the chef makes incredible salsas! it's a casual vibe. lots of table seating and some bar seats. i'll be back!

Yelp
Some friends wanted to check this out after reading about it somewhere. Met at 7pm on Sat and only waited about 5 minutes. We shared the short rib mole, pork chop, octopus, and chicharon taco. Everything was really good. The three of us agreed. My favorite was the octopus as it was nicely charred and came in a spicy sauce. The chicharon in the taco was tender. A little pricey but worth it. Good service. Didn't care for the tepache but just a personal preference. Parked in back although there is metered street parking til 8pm.

Yelp
Mole! Mole! Mole! Great food! Friendly service! Prices are reasonable! Friendly service! Loved that the menu was in Nahuatl!

Yelp
Just an amazing place to come and enjoy tantalizing flavors beautifully presented. The duck breast, served a perfect medium rare, combined with a fantastic mole, a fresh sope and a beautiful minced napoles combine to make a great meal. Isaac could not be more gracious and welcoming. Welcome to the neighborhood. You'll be seeing a lot of me.

Yelp
The food was actually really delicious and high quality. Service was great too! Flor took great care of us. My only constructive criticism is that the lighting is a bit bright and harsh. If they toned it down a bit that would be perfect :) Regardless would return

Yelp
SO DISAPPOINTED! $90 later and we were still hungry and picked up tacos at a food truck on the way home. Beet/Cauliflower dish: cold and pickled, and so much liquid so it was like a soup but served with a fork. Way too sour and vinegary to consume all that liquid. Mole over Rice: the mole was very good but became uninteresting quickly because the rice made it too starchy after a while. Served with fresh corn tortillas. Too many carbs. It screams for a fat or protein like chicken or Oaxacan stringy cheese and these things would add much needed texture too. We asked for cheese and all they had was queso fresco which didn't change the flavor enough to make the dish desirable. We struggled to finish it. Mushrooms: big bowl of sautéed mushrooms. I could have made this. It was completely boring and didn't bring any interesting flavor. We had a few bites and stopped eating it. This wasn't served with tortillas. Why would I want to eat a huge bowl of mushrooms?? And with what?? And for $24??? I think the server should have suggested that we needed to order beans to go with this stuff. We felt like nothing was cohesive. She said the menu was designed so people could share small bites. But with a limited menu and they don't allow for substitutions, a gluten free person (me) and a vegetarian (my husband) had a hard time finding enough shareable that met our needs and interests. The 3 salsas they served were also meh. The one I liked tasted exactly like one I make at home. We will never go back. I appreciated the intention in the food but everything missed the mark in a big way. The place was nearly empty when we arrived and now I know why. Seriously, they need to adjust their offerings if they want to thrive. Their food pictures looked amazing and they truly need to fix some things if they want to stay open.

Yelp
Amazing new Oaxacan spot. Quality ingredients and filling dishes. Worth the money you pay. My only gripe is the lighting could be a bit more subtle. This restaurant deserves to succeed and I hope it does. The food is top notch!!

Yelp
10/10. Wow. The maizhongos (mushroom dish) and mole are absolutely to die for. Never had a mushroom dish like it. Delicious fermented Tepache. Their vegan ceviche was a delightful surprise too. The service was incredibly kind and generous. Answered our questions and made the dinner feel very special. Will come again to enjoy the thoughtful ambiance.

Yelp
Wow. Came here for brunch on a Sunday and we were blown away by how good the food was! I wish I could share photos (beautiful presentation) but we devoured our food before we even thought of it. We tried the green chilaquiles with tongue, the memelas trio, and the doña croque. All of it amazing. And the cafe de olla was fantastic, not too sweet and perfectly spiced. Our server, Roberto, was very kind and attentive. This is real food, so don't expect it to come out in a flash. Enjoy the chips and salsa, and whoever's company you are lucky to be with. It is so worth the wait.

Yelp
Fine Oaxacan dining in highland park!! The place is gorgeous. The food is authentically oaxacan. Everything was exquisit. A (still) hidden gem! Absolutely loved it.

Yelp
Great service great food a must try everytime I come I try something new and everytime I leave I have a smile ear to ear

Yelp
Omigoodness this was a magical experience in that the depth of flavors practically had my eyes rolling to the back of my head. The mole was exquisite. We had the Aztec duck which was accompanied with cactus, queso fresco, and a piece of fried Tortilla. The flavors were delicious. We also had the mole with beef tongue that hands down could be my last meal on earth. The tongue was pan fried and thus the crunch of that with the softness of the meat was unique and creative. We were also given hand made tortillas, which is always an wonderful touch. Worth the experience and the communal tables make for fun conversations. 10/10

Yelp
Authentic Oaxaca cuisine, everything is made from scratch, the tortillas, the salsas and everything else, the results are rich and very unique flavors. If you're familiar with Simón Seafood truck in Silver Lake you know their seafood is amazing! chef Francisco Aguilar comes from there. All the food is good, the question is "what do you like to eat today?" The mole is divine, ensalada verde has so much flavor. My waiter Isaac was knowledgeable and friendly help me to navigate the menu. Highly recommended

Yelp
Rushed over by myself to visit during the soft opening. The mole and fresh tortillas were absolutely delicious. Watermelon mint agua fresca was perfect on a hot day. Relaxed ambiance. Looking forward to bringing more friends and trying more dishes.

Yelp
OMG!!! This place is freaking amazing! I'm not a vegetarian and always look for anything beef..BUT all the plates we ordered were AMAZING!! The service is 5 star..everyone who works there is always following up to make sure you're happy.. Had the nopales , ceviche negro (this one was my favorite), mole (my wife's favorite) and some banana creme brûlée for dessert! The ambiance is very nice with some lovely music in the background.. Again..FREAKING AMAZING!! Coming back for more!!

Erin Q.

Yelp
Loved our visit here. Flor is so sweet and provided a great experience for us. The standouts for us were the Agua Frescas, Tlayuda de Tasajo and the Taco de Chicharrón. This is a must visit when you are in Highland Park.
google avatar

Alondra S.

Yelp
If you're into home made traditional Mexican (Oaxaca) food then this is the place to be at. I wish I would have taken pictures of everything I had but it looked too good for me to stop and take a photo. I had the epazote quesadilla and the taco de salsa de chicharrón both very good served in a freshly made blue corn Tortilla. I also ordered a side of rice and black beans which were also delicious. Reminded me of my mother's rice. For desert I had a banana brûlée also very good in a roasted plantain. The agua de Jamaica was different than your usual but very good with a taste of canela. Our server was also very nice and helpful with describing the dishes and sharing what his favorite dishes are. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Abigail I.

Yelp
Beautiful space. Music was romantic. The server was very kind and helpful. He said every thing was good and it was. We started with memelas. Which are like sopes they come with three different flavors. Good for sharing. It's very authentic. You can taste the fresh corn.

Yelp
Amazing new addition to the Figueroa lineup! Left buzzing with that warm satiated feeling when eating lovingly prepared food that was created to tantalize and nourish. Roberto was beyond attentive in making sure everything was thoroughly enjoyed as we devoured the Ceviche, Aztek Duck, Veracruzana Lengua. Each dish is SO unique and vibrant with rich flavor. The long tables provided the opportunity to make new friends in between bites punctuated by exclamations of tasting wonderment and softly mumbled "mmmmmmmmm"s... All under the warm mystic gaze of Maria Sabina peeking from the corner of the colorful mural that splashes across the restaurant.

Raul H.

Yelp
Flor was amazing. Great service, very attentive. The Tlayuda de tasajo is amazing. Must try when you're here. The aguachile was also great. Will definitely come back.

Alice P.

Yelp
We came back for Carnal's dinner service and everything was heavenly. To the point we forgot to take more pictures!! We had the Aztec Duck, the tuna tlayuda, the sopa de mariscos, chicharron taco, and the market taco... Between the three of us, we couldn't decide which one won the gold medal. We're always impressed by this team for the friendliest service, the great vibes, and most importantly... the deep flavors, precise offerings, and delightful meals.
google avatar

B R.

Yelp
Don't say you have vegan options without offering something substantial. I ordered the ensalada verde with a side of black beans. Both plates were small and not filling. They were tasty but not enough for a real meal. It was also way overpriced for what I got. It looks like everyone else was enjoying their meals so I gave you two stars for that.
google avatar

Aldo B.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Very friendly staff, from the server to the chef and owner. The food had rich flavor. I can't wait to come back to try the brunch menu!

Albert A.

Yelp
Amazing experience and amazing food. 10/10 recommend. Jaime and Flor made me feel at home and it was just an overall great experience!

Yelp
Loving coming here , good environment and ambience. Food is beyond delicious so flavorful cant describe how luscious the food is ! Beyond and above :) . Desert was tasty as well.

Yelp
This is a very comfortable place to go with your family or just by yourself if you want. It is the best Oaxacan food I have ever eaten. I ordered a Mole Toast and it was spectacular, delicious, but when I say delicious I mean exquisite, (I'm not lying). The portion of the food is perfect, (even a little big for I usually eat). It is my first time trying Oaxacan food but the flavor of this restaurant has fascinated me to come back for more. Isaac was a spectacular server, he explained many of the dishes to me with a lot of patience and kindness because their ingredients are from Oaxaca and I had never heard of them in my life, at the end I decided on a Mole Toast, and I really tell you that you MUST try this wonder.
google avatar

Alondra M.

Yelp
Food was not what I expected I'm MEXICAN and everything in this menu is REALLY NOT WHAT YOU EXPECTE so HEADS UP ! Service was ok they were just trying to make there money but they shouldn't be lying about there food $9 for a taco that's smller then my hand is hilarious he said it was a "Big taco" we also got the "Aguachiles Rosa" more like vegetables soup WHY call it AGUACHILES when there is no Damm shrimp or anything that has to do with the actual AGUACHILES plate and we asked to recommend us something and of course he recommended they most expensive plate that I'm sure is not even worth it. I'm very disappointed of this place definitely LET ME SAVE YALL MONEY and go to your near street taco place and get actual Mexican food.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
Amazing, I got the Aztec Duck, don't get to eat duck as often as I like and it was cooked to perfection, doused in delicious Oaxacan chocolate mole with a blue corn tortilla topped with nopales to soak up the rest of the mole. Highly recommend. My wife tried the fried octopus and plantains, she's a sea food junkie and she approved. The Tampeche was delicious as well and came in very appealing ceramic glasses. Finished that all of with a delectable banana brule, a little mexican flair on the creme brule and we ate every bite. It was nice to see Mexican food presented in a fancy way for once and they put some fun spins on classic dishes while remaining traditional. We had no idea it'd be as nice as it was before we walked in. With Otono closing, Carnal's got a chance to be the new hidden gem of Figueroa. I'd only caution them that there's a lot of taco stands right outside their door selling quality stuff in Highland Park. They'll need to market hard to get people in the door, hope this review helps, they're amazing, Issac was a great waiter, try'm out!!!

Yelp
Really lovely place! The food has layers of flavors and is beautifully presented. The team there made the dining experience very special with a couple unexpected samples of menu items we were considering. I will definitely be back. Thank you!
google avatar

Hugo G.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience! Showed up late with my girlfriend one evening for what looked like an authentic high end Mexican experience, and Carnal did not disappoint. The mole was complex, with two different varieties for the duck dish and the rice dish, respectively. The service was exceptionally good. We were wanting some protein on the mole rice dish, and our server added the best lengua I've ever had to the dish in a way that tasted seamless. Can't wait to return for their brunch. This might be my new favorite place in Highland park

Cecilia V.

Yelp
We had a great dinner at Carnal. Every dish we had was delicious. Our server Roberto was great at explaining the dishes, he was attentive and very kind. It's so nice to have an incredible Oaxacan restaurant in our neighborhood. I highly recommend it!

Cristina T.

Yelp
Amazing place in Highland Park! Food was so good, very sophisticated palate, with a fun, casual ambiance. Our server Flor was wonderful, very friendly, knowledgeable, and answered all our questions promptly. Thank you, we will be back for sure!

Yelp
Came in on a Friday for brunch, was very pleased with the food and service. My husband and I shared the Avo sope and green chilaquiles with lengua. Very tasty, fresh (made to order) and generous portions. The sope stayed crunchy enough to hold the heaping pile of avocado, scrambled egg and sautéed mushrooms. We also had the mango agua fresca not too sweet and perfect for my taste. Isaac served us and invited us back for dinner. They open back up at 5pm with a different menu. We'll definitely be back soon.

Yelp
Fantastic food. And amazing service. Looks like a hole in the wall but absolutely punches up. Michelin level flavors and presentation in an unassuming package. Sure to be a cult classic for the locals in no time.

Aide B.

Yelp
Food is incredible. All dishes are done in a unique way. Flavors are top notch. Must come and try.

Yelp
Wonderful homemade tortillas. Really interesting homemade salsas. Fantastic Oaxacan flavors.

Yelp
The chilaquiles are insanely good! Service was super friendly and it's got a nice authentic oaxacan vibe

Stephania M.

Yelp

Marcos V.

Yelp
A feast of flavors melting in your mouth. Friendly service, cool ambiance, and one of the best meals I had in LA. Great addition to Highland Park's restaurants.

Alberto D.

Yelp
Been going to Simon's for a while and couldn't wait to try their new restaurant Carnal. Didn't disappoint, great food, friendly and attentive service by Zack. Will be back again and looking forward to try more from the menu.

Leslie R.

Yelp
The good is super authentic and fresh. The decoration and ambiance is on point and great service as well. I will definitely go back. Thank you!
