The Best Caribbean Food In Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean, Part 2 - New York - The Infatuation

"I grew up going to Bake & Things, and really love their food as it transports you back to Trinidad & Tobago. Fried bake with saltfish is an iconic staple in the Caribbean and one of the things I’d recommend, but if you’re hungry and want to try something different, go for their curry crab and dumplings. Pair these dishes with mauby, a bitter-sweet bark with anise, sugar, and a splash of Angostura bitters—especially refreshing on a hot summer day." - Shelley Worrell 31

Today the 9th February 2025 , I went to Bake&Things I bought 8roti skins and 2 Buss up shot, 2 doubles . That roti was from Saturday or Friday, it was hard, oily, stale and HORRIBLE . I called the shop immediately and spoke to the owner/manager. The lady said it was not , but she was lying. At least they could have given it to me for half price. It was like $3.00 each ,the doubles was ok ,not great ,the busses up shot was HORRIBLE too . Their grade is a 10% out of a 100, tasteless .

Google
The employees attitudes are bad. Whoever said "you know their food is good when they have an attitude" needs to stop because that's completely false. The potato they have for their roti lacks flavor and tasted watery. They did not get my order right by giving me a hard, stale buss up when I asked for roti skin. They won't be getting a next dime from me.

You know they say the number one rule in business is “The customer is always right”? Well, not for this Tobago & Trinidadian business. I’ve had their bake and saltfish at least three times. It’s not a Guyanese bake and saltfish, but it’s decent enough to hold me over. Yesterday, my husband called to find out if they had crab curry (different folks, different strokes), and the man on the phone asked us “What?” twelve times before finally, and rudely, saying, “It’s curry crab, sir. And yes, we do.” Granted, we weren’t mad at the correction, but the fact that he had us foolishly repeat ourselves so many times just to get smart? Unnecessary and ignorant. At the time, we didn’t even realize it was a T&T-owned business. I’ve been to plenty of Guyanese establishments that cater to a wider T&T crowd, so that’s not the issue. It’s the attitude and lack of basic courtesy for me. Safe to say the place isn’t Guyanese-friendly and I won’t be back. And no, I never got the crab curry.

Originally I ordered bake & fried shark. Beef roti, phlourie 2 banana solo 1 cream 1 kola. They called me and said only bake & saltfish or herring & They only have cream, grape, orange drinks . I didn’t really like how it taste. It’s to hard. The best thing was the phlourie

the food is good but the customer service is horrible. The male cashiers are way nicer than the woman, most of the women are usually rude, stush, rolling their eyes or talking with an attitude like they don’t want to be there & don’t let you go there in the morning. Lord, they look at you like “why are you here”. I get It, It can be a demanding job with people, talking all day, repeating the same thing, on your feet. I get It, but I kind of don’t. A smile don’t cost nobody nothing, you never know who’s who & who does what these days.

Google
The Caribbean flavors for a fraction of the price. I’ve been to this location three times so far, and I’m pretty satisfied with the food offered. I’m vegetarian and they have plenty of options for me to choose from. Most recently I got Rice & Peas (great flavor!) and Dhal. Would recommend if you’re in need of a flavorful and inexpensive breakfast/lunch.

Google
Great little establishment with great ambiance. The employees were welcoming and respectful. It felt like you were back in the Caribbean and at the restaurant ordering food. I visit this restaurant to get food every time I'm in the neighborhood. I would highly recommend it to friends and family.

Another Trinidadian restaurant in Brooklyn. The food is good the place is nice and clean and very colorful and creatively decorated. Great work! Inside is a little small for the crowd this place draws so be prepared to get close to other customers. We wanted to order ten plain bussups, but it wasn’t allowed we were told to order over the phone. Even though we just called and were told to come in and order. Despite the miscommunication we got five bussups. For whatever reason they had ten, but couldn’t sell it to one customer and make more.

Yelp
Food was Great!! Service was quick and efficient. It's a small spot no sit and eat it's a grab your food and go!! And I loveeeee!! No complaints the chef made the food with love

Yelp
If you go to a Caribbean place and don't here "we outta dat" or "we nuh ave dat" are they even any good?!? That said, as it was West Indian Day parade day and a holiday I was surprised that they were open at all! They were out of doubles and chutney but otherwise we got some nice roti and pholourie with tamarind but nobody had curry mango in New York these days :( The food was good. The goat was well seasoned, well cooked, not chewy and definitely not full of tiny bones and gristle. The spinach was FANTASTIC and honestly I wish I'd tried some pumpkin because it looked good. My oldest had some in his boneless! chicken roti and he said it was good. The pholourie was so good I got one piece by the skin of my chin! The kids ate everything and I thought I'd ordered a ton! The boneless chicken rotis could have used more seasoning in my opinion but the goat was perfection, even without pepper sauce which I ordered and they forgot. Sigh. Overall 4/5.

Yelp
This was my first time getting food from this eatery and now I feel like a bad Caribbean person. I ordered the curry goat on okra and callaloo. I skipped the rice. I also got a small container of stew chicken because it looks so tender and juicy in all the brown gravy and it was going fast. So far I only ate the curry goat dish and it was enough for 2 portions so I ate the remainder with some rice I made at home and it was still 10 outta 10, I recommend! They have an A score which makes me feel even better about eating at this spot. They do not offer indoor dining. You literally order and go! You can suck the bones, lick the gravy dripping down your hand, and dig in with no judgement or shame in the comfort of your home! It's a Trini spot and the next time I go back I wanna try the roti or the bake and salt fish! It looked so good! The doubles looked amazing too! I want everything!

Yelp
Bake and things at the 184 E 35th St location; is a hit or miss. It's either too salty; spicy; small portions and they fill your roti with a whole bunch of potatoes... DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR APPETITE
google avatar

Yelp
I love to come back here every time I'm visiting New York. They always pack a lot of meat into their rotis and it's always beyond delicious. The service was quick and pleasant. The ambience is good for takeout.

Albert B.

Yelp
Amazing food! The service is quick and remarkable. There isn't much parking so prepare yourself.
google avatar

Nordia M.

Yelp
The roti from this restaurant is decent if you're in a pinch. As of March 2024, the cost is $2.50 for each roti skin. The skin is what they call the dhal roti with curried chick pea inside the flour layers. Bring cash to avoid the 4% card usage fee.
google avatar

Gabby F.

Yelp
The food is always great here. It's open later than most carribean places so that's a plus and the service is great ! I always call to make sure they have what i want before i get there and they never disappoint. The restaurant is like your regular grab and go spot, not for dine in but they get you what you need and enjoy at home. I highly reccomend.
google avatar

Yelp
I usually stay away from oxtails that are not made from my mom because for one, they are super expensive (they used to be a lot cheaper) and second, most restaurants add a lot of browning and it's not tender. Why bother? Well, my bf asked if I wanted some oxtails, as you can already figure, I was skeptical. He swore that I would love it so I decided to give it a try (he was paying...lol). My meal came with callaloo, macaroni and rice and peas. I have to give credit where credit is due--the oxtails were DELICIOUS. I was so surprised. The meat was falling off the bone, that's how tender it was. And I should mention that they are not stingy with the meat either. I haven't tried anything else but I'm definitely curious to sample their other meals. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Service was standard Caribbean take-out service (direct and to the point), but at least no attitude and they wanswered some questions about menu items (came here 3 years ago but never returned until now because of the very bad attitude and unwillingness to explain menu items to a Non-Trini, like when I asked what bake was) The boneless chicken roti: good size for large appetitive. Great flavor! Would highly recommend! Will be back to try their doubles and aloo pie since they were out when we went (Sat at 6pm)

Yelp
I will never go here again. I ordered a shrimp roti and my plate was full of potato and only 6 pieces of shrimp. Also the roti was hard and full of flour on the top. Check out the picture. However the customer service was okay. Oh I forgot to mention, I also got Mac and cheese. It was burnt on the top and I was only able to eat the bottom. Trust and believe it was not cheap. The best Trini place is Trinidad Golden Place. Their food is always fresh, you get large portions, the price is reasonable and good customer service.

Ray W.

Yelp
Order consistently salt fish bakes and chic pea bakes with Tamarind sauce on the regular! Def good trini food
google avatar

Yelp
Quick, efficient, friendly and tons of options. Hands down the best roti I've had in NY in all my life. I live and Harlem and usually go to the Bronx for roti. Never again - always coming back here!

Yelp
I usually don't write reviews, but I had to this time. We took a fam trip from California to New York for vacation. As we were driving by, we saw Bake and Things and decided to stop so we got a curry goat Roti and a boneless chicken Roti. I typically don't buy Caribbean food outside because am always critiquing it with every bite due to being in a Family with great cooks. It was delicious, flavorful, and huge for the price. The next day we woke up with Roti on our minds but I wanted to be adventurous because I'm a creature of habit so we tried another spot and then the next day after we try another spot. Both places did not live up to what we got from Bake and Things, a month full of flavor. After the disappointment, it was back to Bake and Things until we left New York. The only thing that was off for us on the first visit/ stop was the customer service but I later understand that is just how New York is. It's a place where it's in and out. After spending a couple of days there I was almost got used to it. Keep up the great Favor and thanks for the delicious food!!!

Dexter B.

Yelp
Yo what is going on with this place? I ordered a large fish broth and received a ton load of celery one dumpling six pieces of fish (small) and a lot of carrots. Where did this version of fish broth come from, and as people who grew up on fish broth this is insulting. Do better bake an tings. Allyuh know better
google avatar

Nadia B.

Yelp
Please less Onions and chopped up greens and more salt fish in the actual Bake and Saltfish. I can't even taste the saltfish, I'm too busy crunching on the big ass pieces of onions and green stuff getting caught in my tooth. The food here is getting worse. I ordered a roti and it was dry like the bottom of my foot. It had humongous pieces of onions in the curry couldn't even enjoy it.

Telisha M.

Yelp
Standard Trini style food that you usually get from your own kitchen but if you can't get it home it's the next best thing. Everything is made well and taste homemade. There's usually a line but that's when you know it's great!
google avatar

Dee D.

Yelp
The food was ok. They had a good variety of favorite Island foods. Two sides accompany tour entree with a fair serving of peas and rice. It roti is ok and seemed to have more bones than meat and the pepper inside was tasty.
google avatar

Shirrell H.

Yelp
I only eat breakfast items from here. Once in a while the bakes are a tad bit oily for me but I always get bake with saltfish, tamarind and slight pepper. Those 2 are necessary trust me. I also get a small porridge when Im really hungry. Now the passion fruit is a must. Sweet but you can always dilute it to stretch longer mix vodka with it.... too yummy Small shop... workers are nice... $10 min to use cards... 1 table and about 3 chairs on the side.

Yelp
It's actually hard to write this review, but when people don't have good customer service, I have to say something. I've been coming to this spot since I was a teenager. My father would bring me here anytime he wanted some good Trini food. I ordered a Vegetable Roti. Anything I asked for, they gave me. When they went to wrap up the roti, it literally fell apart. One would think that the young lady preparing the meal would just get me a fresh roti skin and do it again. That didn't happen. I asked her to put it in a tin container just because it was falling apart as I said earlier. They gave me the Roti for $7.50, knowing that it was jacked up. There's a part of me that wanted to do what most Caribbean people would do and that's cause a scene in the place, but this is Covid-19 pandemic season, and we are all dealing with not being or getting what we want or deserve. The thing that made it worse was that the woman behind me got two perfectly prepared rotis and I got slop in a tin takeaway container. I'm embarrassed that I have to eat this with a fork and spoon because it's literally falling apart. I need you all to do better.

Yelp
Their double was blown mind. If i had a chance, i will come back for their double again
google avatar

Sheesh S.

Yelp
Love them for the bake n saltfish... usually delicious. But recently my bake wasn't the usual best and the saltfish had bones in it that I choked on. Idk if there was a chef change or something. I pray that thats the last time that happens because they are usually on the ball.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my go-to spot when I want West Indian food when I'm in the area. I usually stop through in the morning for their bakes at least 2-3 times per month. On Thursdays, the bakes are hot and fresh. I usually get the fried bake with shark or corned beef when I'm lucky; they run out pretty quickly. When it comes to lunch, I only get their roti with either chicken or beef when I don't want to deal with the bones. I always request lots of tamarind and pepper sauce with my order. My babes has ordered their other food and by the way that he tears it up, I would assume that it's also good. If you have cash and are in the mood for a roti or bake, definitely stop through here. I definitely recommend it!
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
$4.50 for a bake & saltfish that isn't top 5, in Brooklyn is a no go. Drove out of my way to get here and try it, but the saltfish wasn't flavorful. The size of it was a little bit smaller than the regular size of a fried bake (bake & saltfish connoisseurs know what I'm talking about). They may have good food, but I won't be back to try anything else!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Usually go to the one on Flatbush Ave, but decided to try the one closer To my house. I only get the bake and salt fish with tamarind sauce. There's no salt fish, and I waited in line 10 mins just for that. Not to mention, the door needs some wd40 because literally every time it opened, it made this unbearable squeaking noise like nails on a chalkboard
google avatar

Erwin T.

Yelp
Lo mejor que he probado, delicioso el fried bake with SaltFish They are the best, food is delicious
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
This is my go to spot for Roti. It's a hole in the wall, which is where you often get the best food. Roti, pholouri, and doubles are very good. They also have vegan options that are good too. The service is what you expect from West Indian restaurants. It helps to know what you want before you enter. You've been warned.

Yelp
My mom and I were in the area visiting a family friend in the hospital and afterwards we both wanted to grab some food to go. I checked my bookmarks on YELP and said I definitely wanted something Caribbean since I was in the area for most things Caribbean. :-) Now the decisions on where to go because I had over 20 spots bookmarked to check out in the area. I checked for the place with the best reviews and chose "Bake and Things." Wow, I made a great choice because the food was slamming. When we first walked in we noticed it was a small spot but the long line indicated there was some serious good grub behind the glass enclosed counters. I laughed when I saw a sign that said "please don't be on the phone when ordering." I moved off the line and stood to the side and checked YELP for some of Yelpers favorite dishes. My mom and I were shocked there were quite few items on the menu that we had no idea what they were, LOL. (Ex. Buss up shut, dhal) Usually I am the adventurous one and try something new. However, I was too hungry and wanted something I was familiar with and could really review their food. We conversed with two customers who had two small plastic cups of different juices and learned they were given samples to try to see if they liked which was cool to know. One guy was raving about his peanut punch. (Something I will sample on the next visit. :-) I ordered the curry goat meal that came with rice and peas and the two sides I chose were the mac and cheese and cabbage for $8. My mom ordered the jerk chicken meal that came with rice and peas and the two sides she chose were the okra and spinach which she enjoyed. I was able to have two servings with the healthy helpings I received. I think I enjoyed my leftover food the next day even better than the first day. My only issue with my meal was that the curry goat had more bones than I would've preferred but I still sucked those bones because the spices and seasonings were soooo good. This is definitely a place I will check out again when I'm in the area and try one of those Trinidadian dishes and drinks that I haven't tried before

Yelp
I ate it so fast, I don't even have a photo to post. Next time though! All I have to say is that the veggie roti I purchased tonight was simply heavenly. As I was coming from the gym without my wallet, I was 5 cents short and you needed a $10 minimum to use a card, but the kind gentleman at the counter gave me a bly. Now I feel like I should return tomorrow and give a tip because that was just phenomenal. The roti skin was the best I'd eaten in a while. Hate to throw shade, but I recently had one at Jen's on Flatbush and it let me down bad bad bad. Now the pumpkin, mixed veg and tamarind sauce all together was on a whole 'nother level of outstanding. My taste buds were going crazy! Even though the portion size was more than filling and satisfying, I was sad to see it go. I'll be back soon, lovely people at Bake and Things.

Josanne P.

Yelp
The customer service in there is horrible. The way my roti was wrapped with no care in the world and like only 4 pieces of shrimp in it. They get mad at you when they think you didn't inform them of what you asked for because of their lack thereof, communication. Have to do better.

Hillary B.

Yelp
Customer service sucks they look at you like you're crazy if you have questions about the food. I'm No longer a customer here. I recommend Jens Roti Shop where they know how to treat customers.

Loren A.

Yelp
Normally I don't have any complaints, but today, I have to say the bake and salt fish was so salty OMG!
google avatar

Diondra B.

Yelp
Authentic delicious Trini food. My personal favorites are the salt fish & Bake, crab an dumplings, and doubles
google avatar

Felicia I.

Yelp
The food wasn't good at all! My friends & I came here on a Saturday around 8pm & already they DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING. There's a stereotype associated with Caribbean restaurants always not having anything, & this one was no different. How do you close at 2am & by 8 all you have is curry chicken, rice & peas, spinach, pumpkin & stew chicken?!?!!? Are you kidding me. The female at the front was rude (as they are normally stereotyped as being once again) my friends & I are ordering & she's having a full blown conversation with a guy that walked in & she couldn't do two things at once, because all of us had to repeat what we wanted. THEY DIDN'T HAVE NO BAKE OR TINGS & THATS THE NAME OF THE PLACE!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Dawn R.

Yelp
Solid 4-star restaurant as it was clean, safe and staff was attentive and friendly. Inquire for daily specials prior to coming here as well. They have authentic caribbean stewed, curry'd or jerk'd chicken, fish, pork, goat, conch and shrimp. Spinach is spiced perfectly and peas with rice were cooked just right. Con: no indoor/outdoor bench or seating to eat your delicious food asap.

Yelp
This place has gone down hill. My man ordered 2 oxtail meals and when he called me to ask me what sides I wanted I asked what did they have. He took a picture of the side menu inside and I called him and told him what I wanted. They were out of everything. It was only 3:00pm. What took the cake was while I was on the phone with him the rude lady that was talking to my man was very nasty. I told him that I wanted dumplings, which was listed on the side menu. She very nastily said that "dumpling is not a side" but it is clearly on the menu. I truly don't know how people can run a business and be so rude. I am never coming here again unless they get their sh** together.
google avatar

Suz H.

Yelp
Good selections. Many to choose from. Fair pricing and a selection of homemade drinks. I like knowing what to expect. There's a menu/chef special for everyday of the week. Every week. So curry crab and dumplings every Friday. Roti is good and stuffed.

IUse I.

Yelp
this rude ahh mfking server the fat black short one gave me some half ahh chicken roti , i ordered a chicken roti no potato and mfka finna give me some SMALL roti when all the other servers gave me way bigger ones yo dead ahh smd
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
The place is cash only, Caribbean take-out. $10 gets you a small, and $11 gets you a big platter of ox tails with rice and beans with two sizes. Get the large. I came here to fuel up before friendsgiving, and my meal was a friendsgiving of its own (sharing with others, of course). Overall, the price was definitely worth the meal. I usually prefer my ox tail like beef stew, more of the melt in your mouth rather than chewy and the ox tail here was definitely chewy. We also ordered a curry chicken roti, WHICH WAS SUPER GOOD! For those that never had a Caribbean roti before, it's a big piece of fluffy tortilla wrap around your choice of stuffings, such as curry chicken. Be warn, the curry chicken is dark meat which is tender, delicious and cannot be devour directly due to bones. Otherwise, I would definitely return here for a quick grab.
google avatar

Nathaniel B.

Yelp
Bake & Things is consistently awesome. The a great taste of the Caribbean, it is one of the best places in town. We love the veggie rotis and doubles. Try them with pepper sauce and tamarind. Some people are bent out of shape about the customer service. They have never been anything but nice to me. The place can get packed, so it may take some time to get your order. We usually go to the one on Flatbush and Glenwood.
google avatar

Dyanne S.

Yelp
I was in the area and had to stop at Bake & Things. Last time I came I thoroughly enjoyed my food. They have so many options here. I was tempted to get everything in sight but settled on feeding my stomach instead of my eyes. I ended up ordering the same thing I got last time; Only difference is I added chickpeas to my roti and a seperate side of lentil peas. The roti skin was stuffed with at least two scoops of curry chicken, pumpkin and chickpeas. Yoo this thing was heavy! More than enough for two people. The chickpeas were a bit spicy but it evened out with the sweetness from the pumpkin. The curry chicken was falling off the bone and the curry flavor wasn't overpowering. The side of lentil peas were deliciousness!! Perfect amount of seasoning, not salty at all; similar to how I make mines at home. I really enjoyed my entire meal and would most definitely come back.
google avatar

Christopher G.

Yelp
Food is good. Food is good. Food is good. Running out of whatever you want want like the typical carribean restaurant? Check. Shitty customer service like the typical carribean restaurant? Check. But remember. Food is good.

Yelp
CARIBBEAN FOOD ... What can I say I came to Bake & things last week because I wanted to try Caribbean food. Well it was my first time trying some callalo and oxtail and really thought it was good. The service was great not too fast but also not too long to say I was waiting for ever. I had a really good lunch and they have a cool passion fruit .
google avatar

Yelp
roti rocks!! must go!!! Oh, and there's plenty of choices of meats to put on it! chicken, beef, lamb, you name it!

Yelp
Ive been here many times. today i remember to check in. And today i learned my fixed income meal from them. 10$ 1 salt fish with bake. Which is so delicious. Rice and pieces with spinach and a side order of plantains. And a solo soda. Boy did it hit the spot. I love there food. The food is always fresh the customer service is good. The food could be pricey dependimg on qhat you order. However, with food you get what you pay for. And if you spend your money right in here you will be satisfied. Ps try there corn beef and bake Ps try there smoke Herron PS try there shark and bake There sauces are good put it on your food. They charge if you want it on the side. Non the less the sauce is worth paying for. I will always be a fan of bake and things i come mostly morning time and im able to get fresh rice. Dam the food be so good i always forget to take a pic. Also they have a location on flatbusb which is just as good . So i suggest if you are in the neighborhood stop by. I have traveled all the way here from home just to get that salt fish and bake.. mmmmmmm so so good bake and things fresh food ......
google avatar

Beverly G.

Yelp
I love bake and things! Been coming here for years, it is my go to spot once I hit Brooklyn! I would gladly give it 5 star if the ladies were a little more personable and the process of ordering the food a little bit easier. Also, no prices posted for any meals except the $5 special.

Yelp
I'm going to say yes. I don't know what Trini food is like but this food is so delicious and the flavor is so different than what I associate as curry. It is actually a well stewed chicken that is fall of the bone tender. The rice and beans were different than the Costa Rica type that I enjoy and I liked this type too. I really enjoyed the rice with Callaloo which is a veggie mashed and creamed. I even enjoyed the pasta side (and if you haven't noticed, I'm not a big fan of pasta.) The people there were so friendly. They gave us a try of the various specialty drinks that the other patrons enjoyed watching us try it. Are people of Trinidad normally so friendly and nice? If this is representative of those people, then yes, they are. Clean clean clean. This place is meant for take out really, but they had just about two benches for me and my honey to try their food as eat in. No bathroom. Take out. Cash. Oh, and please do not put your hand over the counter where the food is. Please maintain sanitary food zones.

Yelp
Since I was a kid I have been going to bake and things, my mom live for curry and they make the best. It did not matter where in BK we lived on Friday and Saturdays we were headed there. When my mom got pregnant with my brothers it got worst, we were there like every other day lol....she made my dad miserable. Even though its small...it's very clean....great service....great staff.....and friggin awesome food.

Ummm Bake and Shark didn't live up to expectation...I am sorry but it seriously tasted just like chicken! It was decent if it was a chicken sandwich but I am not sure since its suppose to be shark.. Thank God H got it for me, otherwise I would have been mad going all the way up here again.
