The Best Bagels in New York City

"Bake Shop is Bushwick’s hippie-style hangout, embracing all the latest bagel fads, including gluten-free bagels, in addition to its roster of sandwiches, breakfasts, cookies, and birthday cakes. The bagels have a rustic quality as if they have been flown here from Eastern Europe a century ago, and are more browned than average, in line with current trends. The everything bagel — decorated with a straw-like topping — is a favorite." - Robert Sietsema, Eater Staff

Google
I would stick to the sweets and cheesecakes if you come here. They are phenomenal. The bagel is very mediocre and wildly pricy. A bagel with plain cream cheese and a black coffee was over $10, and I feel like that is criminal. That being said, every dessert item I’ve had from here is fabulous. The banana pudding, cheesecakes and the s’mores bars are my favorites.

Google
Cute spot! Kind staff and delicious vegan treats. Tried chocolate chip cookie and poppyseed muffin. Muffin tasted like Girl Scout Lemonades! Soo good!!

Aja Brandman

Google
Nice enough space with good amount of seating. They sell Little cupcake shop cakes / cupcakes as well as their own baked goods. The matcha cookie was soft and chewy on the inside with white chocolate chips. Overall, prices seemed a bit steep here, for coffee and baked goods.

I had a good time coming here. It was my first time and I really had a good experience with my breakfast and coffe. We got a Bacon egg and cheese sandwich, very different taste. Never had that before and kinda like it. The taste of the coffee was perfect. "Delicious Cupcakes" Btw, the staff was very friendly and very enjoyable music. 🥳🥳

Google
the poppy avocado bagel was delicious, the vegan pastries too, i loved the vibe and the personnel was very kind ❤️

Google
Atmosphere is good because there’s not too many people in there- and the reason for that is that they’re way overpriced. Everything we had was good but it’s sugar, it doesn’t take 15$ to make sugar taste good. Service was fine; they pick things up and put them in bags efficiently.

Google
Cute space. Brooklyn blackout cake and cupcake are great. Strawberry shortcake cake is good too. Nice staff & excellent service

Google
My go to bakery. The pastries, cupcakes n cakes are next level good. Some are complaining about the price but the way I look at it is, you get what you pay for and their food and service is well worth it. 👍👍👍

Yelp
I've been patronizing bakeshop for many years and finally had the time to review. My favorites have always been the Vanilla, Red Velvet and Chocolate Vanilla options. The slices are decently sized and the icing is thick. The cake consistency is chewy, soft and consistent. I'm not vegan, but this is one of the better options I've tried out of the few in the area at this range and quality. Great cakes. Stop by if you haven't in a while.

Yelp
Still delicious but more gluten free options would be nice. I have been coming here for a few years and I love the GF brownie, banana bread, and peanut butter cookie. There are so many cakes and cupcakes. A few of the cakes are vegan but none are gluten free. I've been asking for this for months. A punch card for frequent customers would also be nice.

Yelp
In Brooklyn while looking for a coffee shop with my friend, we came across Bake Shop, I figured it had to be calling for us, as there was a parking spot right in front. This place is so, so cute! It's got beautiful plants everywhere, their presentation is very eye catching. They also have some unique chocolate bars, teas and hot chocolate for sale. There is a sign outside that Bake Shop has been voted as having "the best chocolate cake" according to Food & Wine Magazine. I can't speak to this cake as I didn't try it. What I can speak to is their coffee, and that certainly didn't get any type of best award from me. I ordered a pumpkin spice latte. I asked for a small. My friend got a chai latte, also a small. They were $6 each. These came in huge cups. The cup size can be forgiven, it's what's inside that matters. All I got was a cup full of lukewarm milk. There wasn't any coffee or any pumpkin spice that I could taste at all. My friend wasn't impressed by her chai latte either. She said "it got lost in all the milk". I tried to improve mine by adding some cinnamon and cocoa powder to it. It didn't help. I paid $6, for a tall glass of milk. Despite the cute factor of Bake Shop, I don't recommend you spend your money on their coffee.

Yelp
Great cakes- little cupcake shop Brooklyn Blackout is delicious! Nice selection of baked goods and local handmade products.

Yelp
WOW the vegan GF chocolate and vanilla cake is one of the best I've ever had (and I'm a huge critic). The slices are big and decadent. They have a lot of vegan dessert items and I'm excited to check out next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute bake shop. There are a lot of various cupcake and cake options, even vegan. I got a cookies n cream cupcake that was delicious, I finished it all! I do think it's a averagely priced and you can get coffee too. I think I saw some doing work there like a coffee shop so it is cute to visit for a quick snack/dessert.

Yelp
My FAVORITE chocolate chip cookies!!!! The cake is amazing as well. One of my favorite cake bakers in NYC, so much better than the overrated "favorites" in Manhattan and I've tried them all!

Yelp
So I'm not vegan, and didn't realize that this place is vegan. Regardless, I had the empanadas which were way too pricy. It got pretty busy while I was there and we waited a while for our food. The ambiance is fine, I don't think I'll be going back.

Yelp
So I definitely was deceived by all the good reviews and normally I would try a place a couple times to write a low review unless the service was really bad but who is actually eating the desserts here?? I had the blackout chocolate cupcake and it was one of the most driest cupcake I've ever had. Honestly I could kind tell it was dry just by walking in the place but the frosting looked really good. Pros: the cupcake had a lot of frosty and it was sweet. They had quite a few selections for desserts when it comes to options. Also unlike many Bushwick establishments, it's not cash only. Thank goodness Cons: like I stated before, the cupcake was extremely dry. I kept taking a bite hoping it would change but ultimately I threw it out. Something I rarely do with food. Overall, idk maybe the other desserts aren't dry but the other reviews says other wise.

Yelp
The gf and I love this. The chocolate cake is fantastic, tied with Amy's for our fave in NY. The strawberry cake gives the chocolate cake a run for it's money. We like this better than the same items at The Little Cupcake shop on Prince Street. Yes, we do schlep from Manhattan to here for the cake.

Yelp
I forgot to post my review on this Bake Shop. I was lured in by a sign that said "World's best Chocolate Cake" I'm a sucker for chocolate so I found myself going inside for a slice to see if this sign upholds some sort of truth. I'd like to put this out there that my 3 stars are for the customer service, which happened to be superb and they're very friendly and have a variety of options including vegan options, but the sign did not live up to my expectations. The cakes are extremely dry, more drier than I thought it'll be. I wonder how long they've been sitting there? This dryness couldn't be a result of some freshly baked cake, could it? I sure hope not. I had a vanilla funfetti slice which was extremely dry, I just couldn't see myself finishing it. The chocolate cake was also very very dry and taste much like buttercream. I didn't get a chocolate satisfaction from it at all. Overall I was not impressed! The cake is no where near the "best chocolate cake" I've had better. The cookies were like scones and I didn't get much of a chocolate chunk cookie vibe from it.

Yelp
This place is such a gem. Perfect mixture of plants and baked goods as well as zen finds with the hand made incense and candles. I love it here We got the strawberry shortcake cupcake, delicious. There is a vegan option too and coffee well made! Prices aren't crazy and the service is real good and fast! Definitely a must to visit. Also the area is very great to just explore in.

Yelp
I still love this place, I've been coming here for 3 years I think. They have more options now, Carrot cake is still delicious. I had the strawberry cake last night and it was awesome! The slices are HUGE!!!! I should've took a photo but by the time I remembered too the cake was half gone. The peanut butter cookie is so dang good too!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is not bad - but I gave it 4 stars because the coffee is always burned. I usually go there just for something sweet, but I'd really only recommend the cheesecake or the banana pudding. Other things are hit or miss. It's not my go-to spot, but it has a nice atmosphere and my experience with the staff has been positive. Overall, I wish they would improve their coffee and focus on making more quality sweets versus having a bunch of options that lack quality.

Yelp
Went there to get a piece of Brooklyn blackout cake today,oh my how the pieces of cake have gotten smaller, but not the price, very disappointing

Yelp
Consistently good frosting 5 Dryish cake part 2 Smells like fertilizer aka p o - op, it smells like. p o - o p inside, but it's cute and well lit with lots of plants 2 Uhhhhh....maybe more fresh air for that fresh fertilizer smell? Not where I want to dive into a super chocolate frosting cupcake when there's a p. 0 . O. P. smell.

Yelp
This place is so beautiful! As soon as you walk inside you are surrounded by plants (for sale) and an assortment of baked goods at their counter. Cakes, cookies, cupcakes and assorted bars. I thought it was a little ballsy to have all the pastries displayed on their counter in the time of COVID but they do have a glass divider. I ordered a vanilla cupcake and raspberry bar. The total came out to close to $8. The cupcake was standard, not too dry or sweet and had a dollop of heavy frosting on the top of it. The raspberry bar was basically with a butter-based crumble to sandwich around fruit jam in the middle. I didn't order any drinks but they have a wide variety of espresso drinks and tea. Bottom line: If you're looking for a nice place to pop in quickly, grab a pastry and a coffee--this is a great place. If you're not into high prices and hipster-made coffee this (and maybe north Brooklyn?) are not for you. But if you don't mind spending a little more, this is a great place to stop in!

Yelp
Great placed for baked goods! And I really like the vibe here. My date picked up the carrot cake, the chocolate black-out cake, and the strawberry short-cake for dessert for my dinner. It was the perfect trio, and while all 3 desserts were delicious my favorite by far was the strawberry shortcake. There were real strawberries actually baked into the cake, it was simply amazing. I did feel that the cakes could've used a bit of a higher frosting to cake ratio but the flavor and freshness were there. This place would be a great choice for all your big-festivity cake needs.

Yelp
Ive never seen an establishment with more inconsistent hours. First off they are the latest opening coffee shop in the area so don't depend on this place to get your coffee before work. It's currently 9:30am on a Saturday and they're still closed when it says they open at 8. I live around the corner and they never open at 8. Guess the owner could care less about his customers.

Serina S.

Yelp
I have been to this business three times and each time has been a big disappointment. One time I ordered their vegan burrito which turns out to be frozen and just microwaved. When the cashier gave me my food it was still half frozen and when I brought it back she rudely responded that "we just microwave them". Another time I asked the cashier for the benefits of their health teas and they responded that they had no idea as if I was dumb to even ask. Lastly, I ordered their carrot lox bagel and they gave me a single slice of carrot that covered 1/3 of the entire bagel for nearly $10. This place is a scam.

Yelp
So , i strolled down Flushing ave towards trying a new ice cream place (nothing exciting...) and then i saw this sign- Best chocolate cake in NYC ......Yeh right........ YEH RIGHT !!!!!!!! Got into this lovely, well set , fun place and met those lovely ladies working on their art . They have multiple pastries , great bakes and some other fun stuff for home , cook ,bake , but it was about tasting the chocolate cake and it was LEGIT !!! They are up there (with couple in Manhattan which are way more expensive) as the best chocolate cake in NYC and definitely deserve everyone attention . Just get on the L/M/J (quick walk from there) and have fun !

Yelp
I've visited Bakeshop (aka Little Cupcake Bakeshop) in Bushwick for the first time and my experience was really odd. I felt uncomfortable the entire time because 2 of the workers were watching me. I'm afraid my first visit will be my last. First, the food: I ordered a slice of vanilla cake ($7.75). It was insanely dry and I can't believe they sell their cakes in such a state. I also ordered a single serving of cheesecake ($7.50) which was okay but nothing amazing. The prices are not listed any where in the open. I love supporting small local businesses and I expect their prices to be high but there is no justification for what they charge given the quality of their food. Second, their customer service: As soon as I came in and until the time I left, I was stared down by the chick who was making drinks and the chick at the register. Since nothing is listed, you have to go to the counter or the refrigerator to see what is available. Their eyes followed me wherever I went! The other workers looked at me once or twice and carried on with their business but the other two women watched everything I did. I really wanted to check out the candles and other goods that they sell but I felt so uncomfortable that I just kept my place in line after figuring out what I wanted to order. When I placed my items in my shooper bag, the cashier lady grabbed the tip jar, with eyes locked on me, and said "let me get this out of here. I can't wait to leave".... huh??????????? Maybe they admired my hair? Maybe they liked my coat? I have no idea why they were staring at me. There was also a white couple there that was causing a scene by literally biting and pinching each other but the women paid little attention to them. I don't want to assume anything about these women and why they were staring because that isn't fair to them (I'm black, they aren't, and the store is near "the hood")... bottom line, I felt extremely uncomfortable during my first visit. I don't think I will return. Two stars because I like the look of the place but unfortunately their customer service needs work.

Yelp
This place is adorable! If i had to simply describe it then its artsy coffee shop that provides the best between happy and informed. Example given to make my point is that they sell coffee, baked goods, and plantable cards . Didn't even know such a thing existed! No outdoor seating but they did have a bench so if you need a quick seat to sip and bite then you can do so in peace. I had something simple but definitely left an impact. I had the iced chai tea latte and butter croissant. I am a secret but not so secret lover of all things buttery and flaky. These crossaints were so good. The flakiness was perfect and airy. I am so happy i stopped by this coffee shop as a morning pick me up. I will be back soon!

Yelp
Some of the most delicious bagels in Brooklyn! Perfect amount of chewy! Eggs are vegan though (tofu based).

Yelp
I just read a similar review posted three hours ago so I realize that I am not the crazy one. Was excited to visit this bake shop as I live in the area for a year and never been inside. Came into the store, said hello and did not hear anything back. Placed my order with the most impolite girl ever. She slammed the box on the counter and whispered " have a good one " while leaving. Cake was good but will never be back. Took a picture of her so owners can realize she is a problem.

Yelp
I think I've found my favorite bakery in Brooklyn. They make everything in store, throughout the day, which leaves the entire shop smelling lovely! Although the baked goods display case slowly emptied during our time there, by the time we left, they had brought out two newly iced cakes! My friend and I split a slice of the Brooklyn Blackout chocolate cake - which they advertise as the best chocolate cake in the US - and boy did we enjoy it! Six dollars may seem a little hefty for one slice of cake, but they are really generous with their slices. We had a light lunch and couldn't even finish the full slice between the two of us!! (The rest of it is sitting in my fridge right now). Before we left, I also picked up a potato and egg quiche ($4), kale and korn knish ($5), and a homemade sesame bagel ($2). The Brooklyn Blackout cupcake was for a friend's belated birthday treat. So far, I've only had the bagel for breakfast. I prepared it with some ham, gouda, and avocado, and it was BOMB. The bagel was thinner than usual, which made me feel a little less guilty for eating the whole thing in one serving, and although it was just sesame, actually tasted like an everything bagel. Um, yaaaaas! No more poppy seeds stuck in my teeth! I think I'll be back this weekend just to stock up on a few more.. As for drinks, they serve illy coffee, which makes for a nice latte. There is plenty of seating - communal and private. There is no internet access that I am aware of, but if you bring a good book with you, this shouldn't be a problem. They also play decent music for such a hipster dipster place.

Yelp
The lady behind the counter was super friendly and answered all our question. She even helped us find out perfect cake. I never had a vegan pudding as good as this. It was so delicate and tasty. Will be back.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday afternoon. Place was relatively crowded. We got the carrot cake and cheesecake to-go. The carrot cake was very sweet and the cream cheese frosting tasted a little too artificial for me. The texture of the cake was very good. The cheesecake is very good. I wish there was more graham cracker crust but they really nailed the smoothness of the cream cheese. Overall, it's an enjoyable place but not really somewhere I'd go out of my way to go to.
google avatar

Yelp
Bake Shop is one of my local go to bakeries. Although it can't compare to their Brooklyn Blackout Cake, the Vegan Gluten Free Chocolate Cake is still a tasty treat. It costs $8. My only complaint about Bake Shop is that their menu does not list prices for their baked sweets. Prices are, however, listed for their coffee and other food items. Nonetheless, they still deserve 5 stars based off the quality of their food and community outreach. They have a free food refrigerator, which is great--especially for all the financial suffering and food insecurity in the community.

Sofi B.

Yelp
Can you please train your staff so they are more careful with things like this? It was very easy and simple to put this cupcake upside up. This is annoying.

Gary B.

Yelp
Whats up with this pope business??? Been going here for years and it's taken a weird change with all this pope/catholic propaganda

Yelp
Did anybody else know that this is a cooler, hipster version of Little Cupcake Bakeshop and it's been here for 3 months? They're so cool they dropped "little cupcake" from their name, but they still do sell the amazing Brooklyn Blackout Cake as well as a few of their other flavors (also in cupcake form), along with cookies and brownies. One of the major differences here from the other locations aside from the funkier decor and atmosphere is that they also have savory food. In fact, the bagels are actually pretty amazing. Try them plain, or in pizza bagel form, or if you're on the go, they have "bagel rolls", which are smaller versions already filled with cream cheese. The Everything and Sesame bagels we tried, which are practically completely covered in seeds, were as good as, if not better than most bagel shops. This is a great spot in a perfect location for killing time while waiting for a table at nearby Roberta's, or for a quick breakfast or delicious dessert.

Yelp
I got the walnut brownie and let me tell y'all... it was freaking delish. It was $5 for one tho, kinda expensive. I wish I bought the whole tray. Idk what they put in that brownie but mannnn I still wake up and thinking about it every morning. When I go there again I will try other stuff. I have high expectations now.

Yelp
When you pass a cafe that has a sign that says "Best Chocolate Cake in NY - Food & Wine", you are going to go in and try that chocolate cake. Bake shop is a cute, but roomy cafe that along with chocolate cake serves a good selection of coffee, baked goods, lunch options and tea. Their case of pastries was extensive with different quick breads, cupcakes, cookies, and cakes. I got the Brooklyn Black Out (chocolate cake) cupcake and a tea. It was one of the better chocolate cupcakes I have ever had so I recommend. They also have a nice selection of vegan and/or gluten free treats and their red velvet cake is made without food coloring also looked amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
Vegan chocolate cake is the best chocolate cake I've had. And I'm not vegan. Please reopen!!! I'm so upset they are closed for Covid.

Chris B.

Yelp
I would have bought more things if the lady working here wasn't so rude to me. The cake was good though and that's why i'm giving it two stars.

Star V.

Yelp
The cake was yummy, the vegan brownie was dry. The employee was rude when I asked about certain stuff they had n she had an attitude
google avatar

Steve P.

Yelp
Friendly counter staff, nice atmosphere (with interesting assortment of random things available for sale), and delicious baked goods. I've tried the carrot cake, banana pudding, banana bread, banana peanut-butter bread, coconut magic bar, and probably a few other items. They seem a bit on the expensive side, but perhaps this is typical / reasonable pricing for "vegan" baked goods. They recently discontinued offering single-use disposable cups. Getting coffee to-go requires either purchasing a re-usable plastic cup for $2 or bringing your own. Unfortunately, as a result, I expect I will stop in for coffee less frequently than I had previously.
google avatar

Gab G.

Yelp
Trendy little spot with plenty of seating. I had a slice of key lime pie and it was decent enough but nothing special. I did get an overpowering instagram vibe, so if you're into that, this will be your jam.
google avatar

Ada Y.

Yelp
Great cafe in the neighborhood, I had matcha latte with almond milk, black coffee, vegan jerky(packed, retail) Overall, average in taste and quality. I love the chill ambiance here, perfect place to get some work done. All the tables are spread out so you dont have to rub shoulder with anyone unless you decide to sit on a communal table. There's a lot of plants in the shop and an indoor plant tower. Service is friendly and quick. I will definitely come back.
google avatar

Yelp
I love coming here particularly love the vegan empanadas and strawberry muffins. All of the things i have tried are vegan and i keep coming back for them. They carry Oatly milk

Yelp
3 words: Honey. Avocado. Loaf. It's everything you never knew you needed in life: dense and chewy yet not heavy, lightly sweet with a drizzle of sticky honey on top, moist as can be with chunks of avocado layered through. Perfect with a cup of coffee or as a mid afternoon snack. The very friendly barista told us it has a cult following- many people come to Bake Shop ONLY for the honey avocado loaf. Great place to do work- on a Sunday, you'll find the place packed with people getting their lives together on their laptops. It gets super busy so weekdays are a better bet if you want to snag a table to catch up with friends. Such a gem in an area of Bushwick that is becoming overdone and over-curated. Go out of your way to pop in and make your own day with the honey avocado loaf.
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
Love this little Bushwick/East Williamsburg gem. Very homely and inviting with live plants making it feel like you're sipping coffee in your garden. First things first, Bake Shop boasts a sign that says "best blackout chocolate cake in the US". I don't know how true this statement is, I've not had every blackout chocolate cake in the US, however I know I'm absolutely in love with the decadent, rich, moist goodness they served me. Secondly, everything is fresh baked and made on premises. Thirdly, the prices are reasonable so I can actually afford to treat myself to delicious cakes and cappuccinos when I go by. Sadly this affects my diet negatively so my waistline and I are discussing how best to deal with this. And last but definitely not least, they sell plants. Cute little succulents as well as larger sized plants.

Yelp
I logged into yelp just to write this review. Had been craving a rich, thick, sweet cake for forever and couldn't find it anywhere. Came here, had the vegan vanilla cake because it looked extra juicy and it was everything I ever dreamed of. That's it.

Bilal A.

Yelp
Overpriced and average is a rough combo for a place like this. The food is something you'd expect from your 9 year old cousin who has started cooking and you have to let them express themselves and try the food when it's really just kind of a sloppy mess - that's this place.

Deirtra H.

Yelp
Sadly, I have been disappointed in my last two visits to the bake shop. It seems like whomever has been baking recently is not baking as well as the original employees bakers. Two slices I purchased three days ago were dry, perhaps old and /or over-baked ex. vanilla jelly almond and red velvet slices. For the price per slice this is unacceptable! Finally slices are cut uneven, are much smaller and the cakes look untidy ...not possessing the usual beautiful consistent appearance. For example second layer of red velvet missing frosting to outer edge of cake like the the top and lower level. I hope this can be remedied soon this WAS my favorite bakery.

Yelp
I haven't posted on Yelp in years, but felt it was absolutely necessary to share my experience. My sister and I needed a quick snack before a show, and were delighted to find this place with so many vegan options. We each ordered savory and sweet items, plus coffee and a drink. We were in rush so the moment the food arrived, I immediately went for the cake - and she yelled stop!! I spat it out quickly. Luckily, she noticed there was some kind of a spider/bug on it. It was small and moved about the cake quickly. After a moment of deliberating, I decided to bring it back to show them. There was a line of people, so not disturb their customers, I went to the back area and quietly told one of the workers that there was a bug thing in my cake. Without any emotion, she said "trash is right there". I said, please take a look and shoved it closer to my face. She said nothing. I tossed it and came back to my sister to relay what happened. We sat there both shocked that she didn't care. Meanwhile, we only had a few minutes before the show, so I tried my vegan tuna sandwich which was two supermarket breads and crushed chickpeas in the middle. Of all the vegan sandwiches I've ever had - this was honestly THE WORST. It's as though it was made by a carnivore who had no idea what vegan food is. I tossed most of it. Finally the guy behind the counter came by and asked what happened and we explained. He said, "next time, come and show me the bug." But we didn't want to disturb the customers waiting in line I explained - they would have all left hearing the story. He asked what we want to do and offered a substitute, which was fine. Finally we had to go and realized the coffee wasn't brought out - and he told us he didn't take the order for it and to pay if we wanted it made. I said, I heard her order the coffee and now we had to leave and had no time, he didn't care nor apologize for not hearing the order. The whole experience was totally baffling. Most places would at the very least be apologetic, and appreciate that we didn't make any public fuss about it. We left $29 poorer (plus $2 tip before any of this happened).

Yelp
A charming little spot with great vegan options. The coffee's great and the bagels are amazing. Everything baked fresh daily and it smells amazing inside. Great spot to chill, read or work. The vegan blueberry muffins are also great!

Sofiola K.

Yelp
From the coffee to the cakes - just delicious and made with care~ I go here everyday and never get disappointed! I love this little place in the corner which has a lot of love in their food & service. The lady who cooks needs a medal. Sweet and kind ladies at the cashier/front also. The owner is very friend Lucky to have them nearby
