Baker's been keeping her eye on three newish bakeries. One is a mom-and-pop business on the east end with scrumptious creations and zero pretension (The Sleepy Baker); another turns on my inner geek girl with their creative blend of fan culture and baked goods (Cakes Cove); and then we have this cool kid, all pretty and playful. You're killing it, Bake Shoppe.
They've done really well with the rebranding (same location and owners of the Wedding Cake Shop). These ladies know taste, but they also have an eye for design and creative direction. Check out their IG: @bakeshoppeto. Good music, cute concepts (e.g. rap series cookies) and a touch of that Petra Collins & clan colour palette. The actual shop has a neon pink "Baked" sign (love my button!) and a modern mural. I feel some Milk Bar vibes, but this seems fresher and with more indie spirit at this point.
So beyond cakes and cupcakes, what do they offer?
A fun and contemporary take on nostalgic eats. They have pop tarts made with filling from Kitten and the Bear, S'mores bars toasted on the spot (fire in the disco: https://instagram.com/p/4HpIVPzGxl/); homemade passion flakies; Nutella stuffed brown butter cookies; funfetti goods galore etc... They even serve milk as one of their drink options.
The ice-cream sandwich craze is still going strong in this city and their take involves pop tarts as the bread. That's basically a triple sandwich!
These cool seeming ladies also currently have a stall at the lovely pop-up Club Monaco Market on Bloor Street (on until October) along with Parts & Labour, Phillips ice pops (tried one - watermelon, lime and salt - good, but overpriced, sorry), Sweet Woodruff (pretty flower business on Dundas W, I learned) and Boxcar Social.
I tried a Ruffles marshmallow treat ($2).Yes, that's Ruffles potato chips subbed in for the usual Rice Krispies -- ingenious! What a delicious and balanced snack of fat, sugar and salt!!! 100% Pure Love.
