A friend told me that even if I didn't make it to a Baked By Melissa during my time in NYC, not to worry - there was a store within JFK. Before our flight, I had time to check out the airport store. I didn't feel bad about not making it to the original bakery because the airport store had a fantastic selection!
Baked By Melissa sells both mini cupcakes and macarons. The vast amount of cupcakes was almost overwhelming ... there were so many flavors! I think because they were also in mini size, it just looked like there was more of them.
I had a hard time picking flavors for my six pack, but the girls behind the counter were helpful. There were just so many to choose from! I just felt rather rushed because there were other people in the store waiting to order.
Baked By Melissa is great, in terms of taking snacks back home from a NYC trip. The containers are easy to open and close, and it's fun to customize your pack. I just got a 6-pack, but there were bigger sizes (25-pack) available as well.
My family was happy with the cupcakes and finished all six quickly! But then again, you can easily pop one of these little guys into your mouth whole. I was just happy that the plastic container was snug and the little cupcakes made it back to Hawaii safely.
Here's what I got:
"Chocolate Chip Pancake": This cupcake featured a yellow pancake, maple syrup icing, and mini chocolate chips on top. I normally don't like yellow cake, but this was really moist ... completely reminiscent of a pancake. The mini chocolate chips on top provided the perfect texture.
"Cookies & Cream": This cupcake featured a chocolate cake, cookies & cream filling, vanilla icing and a petite chocolate cookie on top. I love Oreos, and this cupcake reminded me of just that. The chocolate cake was decadent, and the cookies & cream filling was luscious. The vanilla icing balanced out the chocolate cake perfectly.
"Mint Cookie": This cupcake featured a mint cake, fudge filling, mint cookies & cream icing and a mint cookie butter and green drizzle on top. I don't like mint, but one of my family members does, so she loved this flavor. She said the mint flavor was strong, and she readily enjoyed it.
"Raspberry Chocolate Chip": This raspberry cupcake topped with chocolate was the featured flavor of the month for June. My family liked how the fruitier cupcake was balanced perfectly by the sweeter chocolate topping. A must-get for any berry lover; too bad it's a seasonal flavor.
"Red Velvet": Pure and simple: red velvet cupcake, cream cheese icing and red sugar crystals on top. This was probably one of my favorites of all the cupcakes I got. Red velvet just has to have cream cheese frosting to be legit ... and this didn't disappoint. The red velvet cake was moist and fluffy, and the cream cheese frosting topped it off perfectly.
"Tie Dye": This cupcake reminded me of funfetti. It comprised tie-dye cake, vanilla icing and rainbow sugar crystals on top. The blend of colors might turn some off, but to me, the colors just made this one even more fun to eat! It didn't have as strong of a flavor (as the chocolate ones), but it's visually appealing.
