South Sacramento Restaurants That Are Open for Takeout and Delivery - Eater SF

Even During the Coronavirus Crisis, South Sacramento’s Neighborhood Spots Are Thriving - Eater SF

"When a location of the Krispy Kreme mega-chain opened across the street from Bakers Donuts in 2013, it probably didn’t think it needed to worry about the small, family-run doughnut operation. But Krispy Kreme’s current BOGO special is no match for Bakers’ drive-thru line, which can stretch ten cars deep on a Saturday morning even in this time of social distancing. During the coronavirus shutdown, Bakers is making double its usual amount of doughnuts on weekends, and still sometimes sells out well before its 8 p.m. closing time. “I have mixed feelings of being in this new reality,” says Douglas Hem, who co-owns the doughnut shop with his sister Stephanie and their mom Susie. He credits the shop’s ability to adapt to the fact that it already had a drive-thru and had signed up with DoorDash prior to the COVID-19 crisis. Krispy Kreme also has a drive-thru. But what it doesn’t have are Bakers Donuts’ 32,000 hyper-local Instagram followers who will boot and rally for the hometown hero when shit hits the fan. People are also buying dozens of doughnuts to bring to hospitals — a simple act that Hem, who recently finished his last semester of nursing school, knows can help give a boost of energy to first responders. “Right now doughnuts provide a comforting treat that reminds people of normal life,” Hem says." - Illyanna Maisonet

Your Guide to Eating in South Sacramento - Eater SF

"Bakers Donuts, opened in 1985 by the Hem family, is a neighborhood favorite. When a Krispy Kreme moved in directly across the street in 2013, the small yet mighty Bakers Donuts, owned by Cambodian immigrants, decided to kick it up a notch and offer some more creative flavors like Thai tea, maple bacon, and seasonal pumpkin pie. No time to walk in? Order one of their sausage, egg and cheese croissant breakfast sandwich in the drive-thru." - Illyanna Maisonet

Google
we visited one sunday morning, not sure what to expect. it was small and had that traditional, hometownish feel to it. the donut selection looked amazing and it was very clean. we ordered two breakfast sandwiches and a couple donuts, came out to under $25. i will definitely return.

Google
I ordered a batch of mixed. I live in NY, sending my dad donuts back in Sac, he just got out of the hospital & he loves donuts. These people are so unprofessional. I called and asked, make it right and all they did was hang up on me

Google
Small family owned shop with very unique donuts. I can only give a 5 star rating for the hard work being put into the donuts and to keep a business thriving regardless of the area. The bathrooms and surrounding areas are extremely unclean and homeless people often beg for food in the front, however that is expected given the location. Truly a hidden gem! 🍩

Google
What a wonderful hidden gem of a donut shop!! The ladies who helped me with my order were so kind and insisted I take a couple extra donut holes with me 😋 not to mention the donuts themselves were delicious!! Will definitely be coming back next time I'm craving donuts 🍩

I have driven past this place forever. I've had their donuts a few times. Yesterday I decided I want a donut, Imma grab one... Their specialties are their cro-nuts. O.M.G. I never knew I needed a cronut so bad in my life until I taste the one from yesterday. They offered me the strawberry one and it was a slice of heaven. It is a small Circular croissant, cut in half & GLAZED. Filled with a semi sweet whipped cream & slices of tar strawberries. A beautiful red strawberry on top *chiefs kiss* it was delicate, sweet, & tangy. Oh do good. I went AGAIN thus morning to try it with Maple bacon syrup Cronette. You will not regret!

Google
I wanted to write a positive review for this donut shop as I knew it was a family owned business and i love small family owned business but I feel very cheated. I did an online order, I order the mixed docen for $15.99. I order 2 donuts that were not listed as the accessories, so whenI got there to pick them up and I knew I was going to pay extra, I didn't have a problem with that. I was charged an additional $6 when the donuts are individually $2 (fruity pebbles) . How did it pay more for 2 extra donuts ? And got cheated 2 donuts from my initial order ?

Google
The donuts here are delicious. However, there was an older lady who worked there, and she was rude when taking my order, seeming to have an attitude when I specified what donuts I wanted. I said "thank you" when taking my donuts and she didn't respond. She also got part of my order wrong. Additionally, in the past, I ordered donuts to go, and an older lady (I don't recall if it was the same one), turned the credit card reader to me to specify a tip and pay. I did not give one, and she said "no tip?" as if she was offended. It's a shame I faced disrespectful service here as I've enjoyed the food. However, I won't come here anymore.

Google
This is why I always come back here. Greeted politely and was given some donut holes with my order. They tasted so good I ate 2 donut holes already before I took the picture haha. Even though I live in Bay Area now, whenever I visit my mom here in Sacramento I always go to this donut place. Best donuts I ever have! Every purchase I did over here are always so good and I am always greeted nicely. I recommend this place to anyone. Even though there is Krispy Kreme and Dunkin donuts now, I can see why stay in business because their donuts are really good and customer's service is always on point. 😊

Yelp
OBSESSSEDDDDDDD with this plate and the create donuts that they come up with. There are dozens of donut spots near me and this one is about a 20 min drive but I would rather make that drive for delicious donuts then settle for one out of convenience. I always get a fun/positive reaction when I bring in a few dozen of there custom donuts to work functions. Highly recommend you skip the big chain donut spots and support a local mom and pop shop.

Yelp
Baker's Donuts is a locally owned donut shop in the heart of South Sac. I grew up in this area and it is usually busy with cars in the parking lot and the drive thru. It has stood when many businesses have come and gone, and 2 corporate donut shops moved in close by (Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts). I came by planning to buy a Baker's Dozen. There was no cars in the parking lot. So, I knew I could grab what I wanted and go (options). The woman at the counter was very cold and had a sour attitude. This was a first I ever encountered this at this shop. I've been coming here since middle school. She didn't greet me, and when I said "Hi, how are you?".... She gave a very rude "fine". Never made eye contact. Turned off by the attitude, I decided to grab 1 donut (a mighty tasty fruity pebbles topped donut), pay, and left. I'm all for supporting a local business. Especially one that has been around as long as Baker's Donuts. I'm very disappointed by the service. I'm really sad to say, I won't be coming back to this shop ever. Thanks for the tasty donut!

Yelp
Apple fritter review #10 Glaze: good, mild vanilla flavor, 4 stars Outside: slightly crispy, moreso round the edges, four stars Inside: fluffy, right amount of moistness, five stars Filling: quite a bit of apple, five stars Four stars, the donut holes could be a little better. (Btw speak clearly, I also asked for a chocolate peanut butter donut and got a chocolate donut with peanuts instead). Area is super sketch, maybe use the drive-thru unlike me.

Yelp
Staple donut spot in South Sacramento! I always order large orders from here and they are the best. Love supporting local family owned businesses.

Yelp
Bakers has a reputation in Sacramento. They're not cheap that's for sure. But as you can see they're specialty. It's the closest we have here to any gourmet doughnuts besides Bad Bakers. Even the holes are more expensive than a typical store. The customer service is busy so no comment there really. It's popular all day every day but the line isn't too long because doughnuts are premade. Their coffee isn't the best but that's not important. I just wish the non specialty doughnuts were a little more reasonably priced. And the specialty ones are about $5 these days which seems a little much.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! I have not had a better doughnut in my entire life! I ate 2 of the strawberry cream doughnuts before I even got home! It does a doughnut like no other I have ever tasted. Blows Kk out of the water! I highly recommend going here, you won't be disappointed, well maybe... because you might eat too many!

Yelp
It's been almost a decade since my last review of Bakers but my rating hasn't changed. Bakers Donuts is a Sacramento staple and I don't come nearly as often as I should! We stopped by on a Sunday morning and it was empty so I was in and out in minutes! So many delicious things out on display so I ended up walking out with way more than I planned, but never a bad problem to have. It was about $21 for 4 donuts, ham egg cheese croissant, and a dozen donut holes. Everything was fresh and delicious! I especially love the ham egg cheese croissant because it's warmed up to order and super filling yet the croissant is light and flaky.

Yelp
My family and I have been going here since I was a kid and it's nice to see that they're still open till now. The service was amazing, the lady who helped us greeted us upon arrival and was patient whilst my sister and i decided on what to get. She didn't rush us to order and I wanted to get Apple fritter for my brother, but they had sold out. Instead, she suggested another donut that also had apple pie filling in it. While checking out, my sister noticed she gave us free donut holes ontop of our order (we took a picture but ate majority of the donut holes so there's only one left lmao) I hope someday if I ever have kids, I can take them here to show them a small piece of my childhood.

Yelp
Bakers donuts, one of the original and favorites of the Sacramento area. It's a cute little shop and the unfortunate part is a Krispy Kreme is literally across from them. This place offers a variety of donuts. But I come here for the cronuts. I really wish they would label the flavors of their donuts tho, it made it kind of difficult to make my selection. With that being said, the cronuts were soooo good. Toppings make them very sweet, but I do love sweet. Definitely my favorite place to get Cronuts.

Yelp
LOVEEEEEE Bakers Donuts ! I come once a month super early to get donuts for my meetings but I have loved this place for years. They have the sweetest staff members who make my mornings when I drive through. I always use the drive thru and although they're quite busy in the mornings, I never have to wait long, even when I order 2 dozen assorted. My absolute favorite donut is the blueberry muffin. I could eat a dozen of those all myself. It's off of Florin road so there's tons of traffic and they open at 4:00 AM which is great for me. They also have coffee and some breakfast items. You guys have to give it a try and worst case, you end up not liking it, there's another donut place across the street, but trust me, Bakers is SO much better.

Yelp
BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!! The brown Asian lady with black/redish hair is RUDE & has no customer service, she obviously doesn't want to be there but she doesn't need to treat the customer so rude. They seriously need to consider replacing her or send her to the back where she doesn't engage with people Donuts are ok, $20 for a dozen... they lack glaze, the chocolate was kinda dry.

Had to stop and get some fresh baked goodies at a historic spot on florin rd This place has stood the test of time lol The lady at the counter was awesome and very nice... Will be returning for more.....

Yelp
Such great donuts !! They're always so fresh and they taste so good ! We get mixed dozens with some donut holes. I love how the donuts taste so fresh I love the mixed variety we get so that my family can choose their favorites. They're always so friendly when my mom used to pick up from the drive thru and they would remember her which is great haha. They wrote a happy birthday message for my mom when I told them it's her birthday ! She loved it! Thank you for your kind service !! Her favorite donut spot here :)

Yelp
This cute little donut shop has always been our favorite place to buy donuts from since I was in middle school. People say the donuts taste like average, they REALLY need to get their taste buds checked because you can taste the love and hard work they put into their food. The decor is very simple and homey. The donuts are freshly baked in the morning, warm and fluffy. They have a variety of donuts especially their specialty donuts, SO DELICIOUS! When you come inside their shop the aroma of the donuts makes you want to melt. You need to come in the morning when the donuts is freshly baked. The donuts still taste good throughout any day of the time but of course freshly out of the oven is always the best. Their service is above and beyond expectations as always. THIS IS A VERY FAMILY ORIENTED donut shop too. They don't discriminate or judge you. The owner treats you like you're one of her children and she treats my kids as one of her grandkids. They always make me feel emotional because they're so welcoming, loving and caring. It's rare to see a food service that actually takes care of their customers. Truly, down to earth people. Baker's donuts is the only donut shop my kids love and actually finishes their donuts too. I definitely will keep coming here till I'm a grandma and will be bringing my future grandkids here too if this place still exists.

Yelp
This place is consistently outstanding! The Bavarian Cream is the donut I've been searching for my ENTIRE LIFE. If you love the custard filling, this place makes sure your donut is full, they do not skimp! Also love the blueberry cake and the apple fritter. Today I ordered the ham, egg and cheese croissant and let me tell you, it's heaven! BIG, buttery croissant with thin ham slices stacked, eggs and cheesy melty goodness... perfection. Also tried the Vanilla coffee, wonderful. You get free donut holes with a $20 order too! I can't say enough about this spot, check them out!

Yelp
Decent price with wonderful donuts, best and cheapest donut you can ever find in this town

Yelp
The donuts were delicious because my husband ate his strawberry whipped cream donuts before getting into the car. Small business but you do have a place to sit and eat. The owner is so nice and friendly to chat with. Will go back soon.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite donut place in Sac. Always delivers fresh donuts and pastries, you can tell such a big difference between these and other donuts. My favorite is the pumpkin spice but everything we've tried has been a hit. And as you can see, my kids love them too. Also love support a small family run business.
google avatar

Peachy M.

Yelp
First time trying this donut shop. The lady who waited on me was so rude and unfriendly. She acted like she was so annoyed waiting on customers like I was bothering her when I asked what the donut flavors were. I got a cronut which wasn't bad but a little oily and a glazed donut. She ended up accidentally giving me $10 more in change than she was supposed to. Oh well that's my reward for dealing with her bad attitude. There's plenty of other donut shops out there with more pleasant people. I don't care to come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Good folks, good donuts and drive thru! Bakers Donuts makes great old fashioned Donuts and good apple fritters. That's usually my order, so I can't speak to the other donut types. I'm always pleased with the products. Especially those maple old fashioned! Having the drive thru is a special treat. BTW, I never need to go across the street to their competitor. Bakers Donuts are great!

Yelp
I wanted to pick up some treats for co-workers and I was in the south Sac area, and immediately thought about Bakers Donuts!!!! This business is family owned, very friendly, and delicious donuts!!!! I love their creative donuts!! I choose: Chai Tea with Captain Crunchies, yummy maple bacon, oreo cookies, bacon Cronuts, red velvet Cronuts, and the basic. Glazed, sugar, and chocolate glazed. The owner threw in some donut holes!!! They are very kind!!!! When I arrived at work, there were many eager co-workers wanting to get first picks of their donuts!!!! I ate my favorite, Chai Tea with Captain Crunchies!!! Yummy!!! The donuts quickly disappeared!!! If you are on Florin Road, you have to stop by Bakers Dozen!!!!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Friendly and gracious with their donuts. Always a hit at the office, breakfast parties or anytime at a hospital when you need to score points with the nurses. Thank you for the yummy and colorful donuts. Will be back soon to pick up more!!
google avatar

Mia M.

Yelp
Their maple bacon donut is OMG good! I don't really like donuts and eat them once in a long while but these here, were delicious! Nice sized pieces of bacon too!

Hellennie B.

Yelp
This is a really great place to buy donuts. And it's a drive through! The staff is kind and remembers you and your order- even if you've only been there once before several months ago! This is what happened to me earlier today. I went by a a month ago, and they didn't have the donut I liked at the moment (a blueberry cake donut) today I went and ordered several items- 3 donuts, 2 croissants and a dozen donut holes. and she gave me a complimentary donut- a blueberry cake donut! She also remembered that my partner likes donut holes. These donuts are fresh, light, not greasy and a fairly good price for Sacramento. The ham and cheese croissants are TASTY, buttery, they don't skimp on the fillings and hot. I hope everyone chooses to go here.
google avatar

Brice T.

Yelp
It's good if it's all you have access too. I think the history behind this place and how long it's been around shows in the high ratings, but with new innovation and newer donut places opening up that are trying to do better than their competition, I think locations in Elk Grove do at least just as good with some locations doing better. Their customer service is very friendly, but their donuts are average in my opinion.

Larissa M.

Yelp
Very rude female employee. Definitely doesn't need to be the front help if she clearly doesn't like her job. And watch your account because they like to over charge.
google avatar

Faith S.

Yelp
I absolutely love bakers donuts! I've been coming here for years and even when I moved an hour+ away , when I come to visit my mom I still stop in to get my favorite donuts. I came here for Mother's Day and we got the cronuts and they were a hit! Love & support the business and absolutely love the donuts!

Lucia G.

Yelp
I'd been here a couple of times before and was very happy with the donuts. They were delicious and fresh and they had a great variety. Tonight I arrived around 7:20pm and they were closed. The hours on Yelp said they were open till 8pm and signs in their windows confirmed it. There was a sign that said to go through the drive through and honk your horn which I did several times. Not only was I disappointed but I was also upset by the lack of professionalism and consideration for their customers especially because I drove 18 minutes each way to get there.
google avatar

Yelp
8/25/2021 UPDATE I was craving for donut holes and decided to stop by this morning to purchase 2 dozens for my grandpa and I. I was on my last two donut holes from my bag and found a little creature it was honestly so disgusting, ofcourse. The bug was actually inside the donut and visible to the naked eye.

Elaine D.

Yelp
I love these donuts! I drive over an hour away and call in the day before to make sure I get the exact donuts I want because they're usually sold out. The owner and staff are always friendly and it's one of the reasons I keep coming back. My favorite donuts are the Reese's, the cookie butter, ube, Thai tea and cinnamon sugar cronuts.
google avatar

Star D.

Yelp
My 2nd favorite donut shop in Sacramento. A little pricier. But hours are great, and the donuts are fresh, and always seee customer traffic. Always has variety in stock which many donut shops do not.
google avatar

Yelp
I'mma keep this review short n SWEET! Baker's is legit a Sac landmark! It's a little hole in the wall donut bakery that has been in Sacramento for YEARS! Everybody knows about this donut haven! And what makes this place stand out is that Krispy Kreme was built right across the street from them like 5 years ago and in the end presented ZERO threat to Bakers! If anything Bakers is booming n doing even better with them across the street! I mean come on, Bakers is unique and make yummy unique donuts than your standard Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts PERIOD! And what makes them stand out even more is that they haven't changed a damn thing inside or outside the shop! Just like walking back into time once you step in there, it gives you that unique nostalgic euphoria! The look, smell and everything! Including great customer service! Be sure to stop by when you're in the area! Plus lucky me, this little glaze haven is in South Sac, where I live! Stop by my neighborhood n show this local business some love!
google avatar

Yelp
If you haven't been to Baker's Dozen on Florin Rd for Donuts, You must go. I picked up my favorites this morning; 6 Maple Bars & 6 Chocolate Bars. These were warm & full of Deliciousness!!!

Yelp
Bakers Donuts is a popular donut shop in South Sacramento, known for their creative donuts, such as cronuts, ice cream donuts, specialty donuts with flavors like maple bacon, ube, Oreo, fruity pebbles, and more. Although this shop has been on my list of places to try for years, it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that I made my first visit. Unfortunately, the one day I went, they were out of everything I wanted! There were no specialty donuts, no cronuts, not even basic chocolate raised donuts. The shelves were semi-bare and the only donuts left were ones I didn't really want. Since it was a journey for me to get there, I chose several chocolate old-fashioned donuts, and old-fashioned, and an apple fritter. The chocolate old-fashioned was too sweet, but the apple fritter was good. It was disappointing that they were out of all the good donuts, especially since it was still early in the morning. It was even more disappointing that they were out of basic donuts. Overall, the small selection I ordered was not bad, but not outstanding.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
OMG! You have to go here for the best breakfast sandwich and fresh donuts. I ordered one day off a delivery service and was hooked. By far, one of the best bakeries I've visited in over 40 states.
google avatar

Paula T.

Yelp
This is my door dash review. I paid $16 plus tax for their dozen FANCY donuts. I expect the ones that's shown on the yelp photos. In addition, I requested to not have any duplicates of flavor. What I ended up getting were regular donuts that any other donut shop sold; glaze, plain, chocolate, boring sprinkles... literally nothing special. People praised how creative and delicious their fancy donuts were and they pretty much ripped me off of that. The donuts they gave me were old and stale. They literally gave me the leftovers of what was not sold for today and pretty much waiting to be tossed out. I guess I was the sucker who ended up purchasing their garbage. I love supporting family owned businesses, but no offense, I won't be supporting this one anymore.
google avatar

Chaulzy S.

Yelp
If being across the street from Krispy Kreme and still having a line of people waiting for donuts while KK is empty doesn't tell your where you need to be i don't know how to help you. This place is a local GEM. I've never heard of them until one pregnant summer afternoon i wanted some thing hot but cold. Welp my coworker said I'll be back they brought me a warm donut filled with my favorite UBE ice cream. Rolled in fruity pebble cereal. Blessed my pregnant soul lol Now i just can't stop coming for their donut holes! Everything is good but i love the donut holes for the ease of eating in one bite My kids now can't go a day without them. Not to mention the service is superb. I feel like family coming in there and if they don't have something but have the stuff to make they are willing to try if they aren't busy. Today the kids wanted a fruity pebble donut which they were out of but the girl was like she will make it from a cake donut if that was fine. Well yass it is. Everyone needs to have a donut from here. A regular or a special or the ones filled with ice cream.

Yelp
This place was a good change of pace, I typically go to krispy crème but I'm definitely happier that I went here. They had a great variety of donuts which were all good, and it feels like a mom and pops owned place. I love supporting business like this during these challenges time and will definitely be back
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best donuts I've ever had! They have a variety of flavors and got the best cronuts in town! Some of the donuts I got were sugar crystal, red velvet, maple, chocolate, cookie butter, Reese's stuffed! They were all so yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
Big fluffy sweet and delicious. Lots of options including ham and cheese croissants, cronuts, and interesting flavor combinations. Try the mint Oreo and come back and try another one.

Yelp
Bakers Donuts rocks the spot every time I stop in. The maple bacon donuts are my favorites. I order at least three every time I visit. They are very creative with their variety of offerings. They have a little bit of everything. Sweet, savory, plain to exotic. A definite Sac Town landmark. #eatingwithseanandre Its Gon Be Dope!

Yelp
the best donuts in town! this is an old fashion donut shop, they have all the classic favorites and more, friendly service , fresh donuts and coffee, they even gave me some free donut holes.
google avatar

Kelley T.

Yelp
I was recommended this place by my coworker because we were talking about donuts one day. I decided to stop by and pick up some donuts for a snack. One thing is that they don't allow you to enter the shop, so I wasn't able to see the actual donuts, but they had a drive through with a menu so I just ordered and they packed my donuts for me. I ended getting a normal glazed donut and a apple fritter. The glazed donut was still pretty soft, airy, and not stale at all even though I came like late afternoon. The apple fritter was massive and very sweet, so I could not eat all of it in one sitting but boi was it good. I hope to come back one day in the morning so that I can try them when they just come out of the fryer.

Yelp
The staff is so friendly- and the food is delicious! Can't beat donuts made in a small shop! There's a reason they've been around over 30 years!

Yelp
Awesome donuts! It's a far jog for me but worth every minute! The croissant donut is the best! So many choices!

The drive-through is so convenient, and they staff are so kind! We went toward the end of the day and they gave us an extra donut to try for free. The donuts were yummy, too, and my kids loved the sprinkles.

Yelp
Donuts are great but very disappointed. In the way they treated a customer he was a homeless man, but he paid for his donuts and coffee after he received his food they kicked him out.

Yelp
I've been here twice and both times the donuts were amazing, the family who runs this shop are really nice and I think she even gave me a few extra donut holes when I ordered one of their popular donuts for my boyfriend. The donuts here are extremely affordable and they have a drive-thru so it's also convenient for picking up donuts in the morning for breakfast.
