Bakers Dozen Caribbean Roots & Bakery - Review - Brixton - London - The Infatuation

"It might be torrential, it might be 10am, whatever, Bakers Dozen is more than likely going to have a crowd of people inside ordering patties. Things move fast at this box-sized Caribbean takeaway between Brixton and Clapham, although be warned that not every patty is always on or fresh out of the oven. Oxtail and lobster will more than likely be, given their popularity—and both are excellent. The former is rich and savoury, while the latter has generous chunks of lobster with a pepper-heavy sauce. Not all of Bakers Dozen’s combinations land, but part of the fun of this bakery is finding out which is your favourite. Food Rundown photo credit: Emily Hai Oxtail Patty A classic combination done well. Decent pastry, a bit of flake, and a deep brown, rich and moreish oxtail filling. It definitely leans more saucy than chunks of meat. photo credit: Emily Hai Cheesy Beef Patty This patty tastes like a mixture of melted american cheese and minced beef sauce. It’s fine, but nothing to go out of your way for. photo credit: Emily Hai Lobster Patty You’re not going to find a lobster patty in every Caribbean bakery, and it’s well worth giving this one a try. There are decent chunks of lobster throughout and the sauce is heavy with pepper." - Jake Missing

I bought a patty that was so delicious that I returned to the shop and purchased six more patties along with a juice. The juice I selected was seamoss mixed with another ingredient. It was too thick and lacked flavor. I often make seamoss gel for myself, and when I prepare seamoss juice, it has a distinct taste. I expressed my disappointment, even though the staff were very courteous. The juice was intended for my mother, who didn’t enjoy it, but they claimed everyone likes it that way. This is how the drink is supposed to be made; however, if it doesn’t suit me as a customer, they could have offered a refund or exchanged it for a drink that is less bland and thick like a gel. It resembled a gel and was marketed as a juice. It was unfortunate because I really liked the patty. I chose not to argue and decided to take my business elsewhere.

Finally went to @bakersdozen.cr today! We had the Jerk chicken, oxtail and lobster patties and they were mwah 😘👌🏽chefs kiss 😙 Pastry was nice and flaky, fillings & flavours were on point 💯 and what I loved was that there were large pieces of oxtail chicken and lobster in the patties My favourite was the oxtail, 2nd place was jerk chicken and 3rd place was lobster The have over 21 different patties available and I can’t wait to try the rest! Service was good and quick even though there was a queue. They also have other food, cakes and drinks, my only disappointment was the fruit punch which was nice but £5 which I think was too expensive Definitely 💯 recommend

Visited today, easy to find. A couple people queuing, friendly service, patties were fresh out the oven, tried the beef and lamb. Tried the rum cake not the best I’ve tasted defo wouldn’t buy again. All I can say is these are the best patties I’ve tasted in a while, not too much filling just the right amount. Pastry is flaky and nice. Highly recommended I’m glad I followed tiktok and tried.

3.5 | while I enjoyed the food, this is a generous rating given the food was not hot and needed to be microwaved as an option in store. I think the biggest downside to this spot is that the patties aren’t kept in some sort of heated oven or made in batches. because of that, I opted to have the patty as is without microwave given I do not enjoy a soggy or non-crispy patty. the filling options were great. I tried the lobster, oxtail, and my vegan cousin had the plantain and rlly enjoyed it. it’s just they weren’t even warm. I also got the bbq chicken and rice and peas, and it tasted good, just again, not hot. I think once the workflow is sorted to keep the food a certain temp or have a system to make to order, they would be rlly amazing. they also might have too many menu options which could be hurting the workflow. obviously people love them because the demand is high, but maybe just take the patties home and put them in the oven yourself. wishing them the best!

After seeing this bakery all over TikTok I decided to see what the hype was about…. Prawn patty was amazing Cheese Chicken with cocoa bread was a delight. The bread was soft and moreish. The patties were perfect. Wanted to try the lobster however sold out. I also order a rice which had noodles prawns and peas in it. Was thrown by the peas. It was tasteless. My friend bought a Mac & cheese which she described as milk and cheese. Customer service was great! I’d only return for the patties only

There is an abundance of Jamaican patties in London but one should make trip to Bakers Dozen Caribbean Roots because they have all the patties under the sun from Lobster, Fish, Prawn, Vegetarians options to Oxtail!! Located in a residential area, it is off the radar from the city but expect queues and a wait before you get served. Luckily, they are well stocked so you won't be disappointed. As well as patties they have fried chicken, noodles, prawn dishes, mac and cheese so your complete Caribbean fix is right in front of you!! I got there around 16:23 and the tiny shop was filled with people and when I left around 16:40 there was a long queue outside!! Since it was a one off visit I got the lobster, prawn, fish, jerk chicken and oxtail patty! The star of the show is definitely the lobster and this is probably the only place you can get it in London and for £3.50 it would be a sin not to try. For that price, I don't expect chunks of lobsters but I found some crustacean pieces which could be red prawn or lobster but I give it the benefit of doubt that it is lobster. Overall, I found the lobster, prawn and fish very similar because the filling was mixed with pumpkin and it was very spicy and salty. The oxtail patty is also worth trying because this is the only way it is boneless and it was minced very finely, again I give it the benefit of doubt that it is oxtail. To summarize, I am glad I tried this place.

When I got the line was a bit long, but it was worth the wait. I only tied a few of the patties, which was Salt fish & Ackee, Lamb and Pawn. All were tremendous. Definitely going back to try the other flavours.

Honestly speaking, it was ok, but I've had better with better flavour. I liked the variety of patties though, service was great even though there was a little wait/queue to get in the bakery. I had almost one of each flavour that they do bcs I wanted to try everything. The homemade juices were great but the patties could do with a bit more spice and flavour. However, I would buy again, but not the expensive ones like oxtail which essentially is just beef. Lol
