Port Hole Cafe Review - Long Beach Island - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Port Hole is your best option for late-night drinks on Long Beach Island. The dark bar stays open until 2am every day, and along with inexpensive drinks and a pool table, they also have a very good, very large roast beef sandwich." - Matt Tervooren

Google
“Nice” “dive bar” in heart of LBI. Have been going here since we moved to the Island 7 years ago. First time back since their renovations which thankfully did not take away from the charm. Was packed last night due to storms but generally a reliable place to grab a table or spot at the bar. Food is good for the prices but more pub grub and obviously not fine dining. Prices reasonable. Just wish they’d start accepting credit cards.

Google
Continuing on my mission of getting to every Happy Hour on LBI we stopped at this locally recommended establishment that stands out as one of the best we have been to so far. Sat at the bar and were greeted by the very friendly staff member, definitely a local vibe here especially during off-season, one of the oldest bars on the island with a wonderful old time look and feel. Had their excellent roast beef sandwich which totally did not disappoint. Great Happy Hour, nice size bar and great TV’s for sports. Can’t wait to return here.

Google
The food has gotten worse and worse throughout the years. It's a shame it used to be a great place. I mean the Colorado fries used to be the only thing you could actually eat and now they don't even make those the right way anymore. It's amazing how arrogant somebody can be with 166 reviews. You could change your food to just frozen delivery food and it would be a thousand times better than what you serve. I've been into my Reuben the other day and literally the entire piece of corned beef came pulling out of the sandwich. And it was never grilled on the grill. Maybe you're looking or between cooks but I suggest you get somebody professional in there.

Had another great dinner & experience at the Port Hole. Their roast beef, cheesesteaks and their specials can't be beat. But it's the staff, ambience & service that always bring us back. Blaire, Lindsay, Jess and the gang do a great job whether behind the bar or serving in the dining room. It's a real "Cheers" atmosphere; welcoming and familiar. We've been coming for years and hopefully will be for years to come.

Google
Super chill and fun environment, Amy helped us out all night and she was absolutely lovely. She was super friendly and checked up on me and my friends whenever she could despite how busy it was. Down to earth bartender will definitely be back.

Google
Celebrated our uncle’s 80th birthday today. Big group of us. The service and food were excellent! Friendly, comfortable atmosphere and couldn’t have been any better.

Google
Love this, place, good food, good drinks. Enjoy coming here with coworkers after work. Pool tables are great, and arcade game in the back. Fun place all around

Google
Young Waitress was repeatedly rude for no reason. She did not want to be there and made it very clear. we were just looking to get a drink and maybe an app but she made our group so uncomfortable we went home.

Julia M.

Yelp
Really homey place to catch a game. Food was good and reasonably priced, which is hard to find on the island. Not a lot of seafood, more pub-type food.

Yelp
Great spot that's been on LBI for a long time. Solid bar food, fully stocked bar with a variety of beers, and a great friendly atmosphere. Definitely worth a stop-in for a low-key bar vibe.

Yelp
This place is a Dive bar with excellent food, very good beer selection & the wait staff was top notch, seemed to have a lot of locals that were very cool!! Pool table was very nice!!
google avatar

Sydney U.

Yelp
The best local "dive" bar with great food, great service and cheap drinks!! The spicy green beans are a must order!

Kathy A.

Yelp
Great patio area. Dog friendly. Great staff. Had some cold beers and snacks (chicken fingers, fries, etc) on a lovely afternoon.
google avatar

Brittany V.

Yelp
Best dive bar we could find during off season. Great drink deals. Cash only. Fried mac and cheese bites were INCREDIBLE. Went back and got them a second time.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Fun locals' bar. Good vibe inside. Friendly, efficient service. Spicy green beans are a great starter. Also had the famous roast beef sandwich. Added provolone and got a side of horse radish. Was it as good as I had heard? No. A little lacking in flavor. But it was good. And lots of meat. And served hot.

Yelp
A true blue collar bar. It's got that old vibe with wood all over. Great ocean beach decorations. They have a decent sized rear patio for the summer. The kitchen has been really good. It has from scratch homemade items. The drinks are sizeable and of normal price. The service has been fun and friendly. CASH ONLY but has an ATM

ray H.

Yelp
This is an iconic bar on LBI. The food over the last 2 years has gotten very good. Bar food selection simple and tasty. The barmaid Amy is a complete sweetheart always welcoming. Great local crowd who is friendly to the visitors.

Phyllis F.

Yelp
Great food and service with nice outside seating! Everything our party ordered was delicious.

Yelp
Fantastic atmosphere, garlic Buffalo wings and roast beef sandwiches were great. Bloody Mary's - not so good... stick with the beer. :)

John M.

Yelp
Bartender was nasty and rude won't be back. She said all of 1 word the whole time , shouldn't be a bartender.

Yelp
Stopped in while passing it not realizing how hungry we were. First time inside after passing it thousands of times. WOW, if walls could talk. I felt like a kid again before LBI became the LBI it is Post Sandy... I can imagine all the Baymen of yesterday belly-ing up to the bar and drinking away their nights. Although the inside isn't all loungy and tapas like, it doesn't want to be, nor NEED to be. It's EXTREMELY clean inside and nostalgic. We will be back for sure. My wife and I started with shrimp poppers which were awesome and we both had their 'famous' roast beef which was piled high on a VERY soft kaiser roll with awesome pickled (?????) red and green sweet peppers which added an amazing compliment to the sandwich. GREAT STOP!!!!
google avatar

Lorraine D.

Yelp
Don't even bother getting the menu, unless you are undecided about sides. GET THE ROAST BEEF SANDWICH. Once you do, you'll be hooked and have to stop in every time you're on LBI. This is a "locals" bar, but they are courteous to us summer visitors. I was hangry and needed something before the traditional Bay Village shopping trip. The tender juicy roast beef sandwich on a perfect hard roll comes with au jus to dip. You can get cheese too (I did provolone). We also shared a basket of fries that came out piping hot. Dipped the fries in the au jus too! You won't be disappointed with this sandwich. Sorry, was so anxious to eat, I didn't take a photo....next time.

Yelp
Great service and friendly staff Great old town bar and restaurant I was told one of the oldest in the area
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
You're not here for the service. Beer's cold. Wings, are great, still serving that same old RB sandwich, get Xtra horseradish. Great dive bar.
google avatar

Terrence T.

Yelp
A delightful little bar/restaurant for the locals and visitors to LBI. The service is always warm and friendly. The food is beyond typical pub grub! A family-owned business that has been here forever!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in here this past Friday evening with two of my good pals, we were all staying in a house in Surf City for a brief reunion. Our Uber driver earlier in the day had recommended this bar, so we walked 25 mins from our house to the bar. When we arrived, I asked about the pool table they're supposed to have and apparently it was taken out for the season! This was disappointing as we were there to shoot some pool and drink beers. We sat at the bar, pints of summer ale were 5$ and the bartenders were great. The other patrons of the bar ranged in age, the bathrooms were clean. Overall OK spot.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
I love this place, it's a new LBI favorite! Great food, excellent service, and nice laid back atmosphere. The beach is right down the block, you can see it right from your table. And yes, they are open for outdoor dining amid COVID-19 craziness. PS: Pay no mind to all the lackluster millennial reviews below about the food. This is excellent, old fashioned, reasonably priced, non-greasy bar food, not some fancy hipster bar or a 5-star restaurant. Casual night out with a drink. If you want fancier cuisine, get a better job & look elsewhere.

Yelp
Had a nice family dinner here. Mom wanted to go, I know I had been here at least once before. Walking in I did recognize it. Bar to the back with tables around. Very much a locals place, not in a scary way, you can just tell pretty much everyone there knew each other. We grabbed a table, and once again Miller High Life bottles. Always gotta give it up to a bar with the courage and fortitude to serve the champagne of beers. We also grabbed some wings which were absolutely delicious. The Sandy sauce was good, I'm guessing it is a blend of everything because it had a tiny kick, but also a garlicky bite. This place is known for its version of the French dip, so how could I not try it? I got mine with provolone cheese. It comes with the normal roast beef on a kaiser roll with sweet peppers. The peppers are actually served next to the sandwich so kinda up to you. I thought the peppers and cheese went well, the au jus was delicious. I cleaned that plate. Also tried the Colorado fries. These are easily skippable. They are just those coated fries, nothing special. The place itself was nice and clean. The waitress was attentive and everything was good. Nice spot.

A Chubby Y.

Yelp
For 2023 they do not take names and on LBI the place is packed so it ends up being every man for himself absolutely laughable. The food is good the wait staff is rotten I've seen McDonald's run better. I come from corporate America ive seen my share of well run restaurants and this one ain't it.

George S.

Yelp
The steamed roast beef sandwich is a highlighted item on the menu. The beef was excellent and the au jus was delicious. The roll could have been harder to absorb the natural juices. The beer selection is second to none. The chicken cheesesteak was very good. The bartender was tentative.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
this place was homophobic towards my friend. they didn't serve us because she expressed herself as bisexual. we've been here for an hour and we still haven't gotten our food. we are trying to be sassy bitches by getting salads only to absolutely slay the day... still no service.

Charlotte S.

Yelp
Great place to go and unwind All the locals go there Great sandwiches I love their chili very tasty Prices are very reasonable The bartender's are very sociable Will be going back soon
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
Only place I will go during the summer unless it's to work. It doesn't have "LBI" prices as we call them which are hiked in the summer for vacationers and the food is good. With covid they are making it work outside and it's clean and well done.. as someone who lives here it's good to have a few spots left we can go and grab food and a beer that is not hyped up.

Yelp
#portholecafe #boomerbitchreviews Talk about the 'Local Yocal' place, have been coming to LBI for quite some time. So many pretentious places in LBI so to find this diamond in the rough was fabulous. Cash only, packed bar scene with the local people. Famous for roast beef sandwiches, I don't personally eat red meat but my partner LOVED his sandwich. My food has always been good. Service is fun and friendly. Grab a drink at the bar, watch some sports if you like, it's all good at Port Hole Cafe. #portholecafe #boomerbitchreviews

Yelp
Very clean and quick service. Free parking behind the building. Food was okay not crave-able good just satisfying. Chicago fries didn't have much flavor and chicken cheese steak was kind-of plain. Ordered peppers and onions on my cheese steak barely got any. Was not bad just lacked overall flavor.

Mark R.

Yelp
Favorite spot on the island. Classic bar. Great bar food and ice cold Pabst on tap. Friendly and amazing staff add to our love for the Port Hole Enjoy!

Joe L.

Yelp
Place is the bomb . Hole in the wall bar gives all the ritzy overpriced crap food places a run for there money . I'll take this place over 90% of the overpriced fancy places that rip u off any day of the week . Great job porthole for keeping it real .
google avatar

Yelp
As a local to Ship Bottom, I can attest that this is a true local dive bar. There is nothing fancy about it, but sometimes that is exactly what you're looking for. Their prices are very reasonable on an island that is generally expensive because it is a tourist destination. You can go in for a quick drink and bite to eat or hang out for a while. There is a large bar to sit at as well as tables if you choose. They have a pretty basic bar menu, but what they do, they do pretty well. The sign outside of the bar boasts "world-famous roast beef sandwiches," which is my go-to meal, along with onion rings, when I come in for dinner. Now, world famous may be a bit of a stretch, but they are very tasty. The onion rings are also delicious. They have a full bar, but in my estimation, it is a beer/wine/simple cocktail (think whiskey ginger) kind of place.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat!Everything on the menu is delicious!I totally recommend the roast beef sandwich and the Mac n cheese bites.Great service.Always a good experience.10/10 recommend.

Brett M.

Yelp
really great spot! try the "famous" roast beef sandwich. the chili is delicious. i was there on a Sunday night when it was super busy and the wait staff really hustles to make sure you get waited on. Highly recommend.

Anne Marie F.

Yelp
Slowest service ever. Been sitting here for 45 minutes with no food. This place has no slay factor and definitely is not giving what its supposed to give.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Looks can be deceiving!! Really cute "local" bar with lot of old furnishings. We stopped in as a friend told us that we had to try their Roast Beef sandwich and we weren't disappointed. Lots of other items on the menu and beer was cold. Would like to return and try something else on the menu as other items peek my interest as well.
google avatar

Daniel H.

Yelp
Neat establishment- visiting area and found on yelp. Beer was cold, atmosphere was pleasant. Service was prompt, the place was clean. Worth a visit if you are in the area
google avatar

Dana Marie S.

Yelp
The food here is beyond the average bar food. The Roast Beef sandwiches are worth traveling a great distance to enjoy. We also can't resist the cheesesteaks. Either way, Port Hole does not disappoint.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Small lively bar with excellent hot roast beef sandwiches. Very friendly servers and reasonable prices. May be more of a stop for the locals than the tourists. And that's a good thing.
google avatar

Carl L.

Yelp
The roast beef here is in a word, delicious! Granted, I'm from Hoboken and it's not quite Fiore's Saturday special (that's worth a trip to Hoboken if you're from South Jersey and I'm not even kidding). That being said, this sandwich is still a highlight of my LBI trips. Everytime I escape my neck of the woods to the good grooves of the shore, the Port Hole is a definite stop along my way! Everyone here is friendly and it's an epic locals spot. It's a few minutes from Ocean Avenue and if you're on the island...worth a trip!
google avatar

Suist S.

Yelp
Came for beer while we were waiting for a seat at the restaurant across the street. This is a local pub feel with seafood bar food. Everything is fried which is perfect while you're drinking.
google avatar

Cathleen S.

Yelp
This place has great prices, the beer is cold. The roast beef sandwich rocks. It's a great place to stop if you are coming from the beach for a cold drink. A heads up - the service is painfully slow here. So, don't stop here if you are in a rush. Cheers!
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
What is the porthole? A porthole is a generally circular window used on the hull of ships to admit light and air. Though the term is of obvious maritime origin, in Beach Haven it is one of the greatest local neighborhood bars. Yes, it's a bit dark, but it's perfect. Roast Beef sandwiches which they're known for do not miss! Try the atomic the Philly cheesesteak if you like hot and spicy then this is right up your alley. Chicken wings aren't too shabby either. Ask for Ben the bartender he's incredible. Every year that we are in Beach Haven we make this one of our local stops, and it should be yours too.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Come on now, no reviews of the Port Hole? Ok. This is for the Baker Family. The Port Hole Rocks. Been going here since I was 15 (they weren't big on carding back then). A little piece of Americana in the middle of Ship Bottom, and the best Pork Role and Cheese in Jersey.
google avatar

Leon C.

Yelp
Great little local bar. Good food, good prices and friendly people. A great place to hang out and chat with folks or have a good meal. Never run into a bad attitude in this place. Check it out.

Sharon M.

Yelp
This place is honestly the best kept secret of LBI. The food is delicious and well priced. Nothing was too expensive but even with a low price there was no compromise on flavor.
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
Very cozy "dive" bar that is also family friendly and has great food to boot. The warmth of the fireplace was so welcoming after the whipping winds of the beach. Being a Jersey born and bred girl of course I got the Taylor ham (I am from Northern Nj) and cheese sandwich. I wish I had a place just like this in my own town because everyone was friendly and casual and kind.
google avatar

Albert S.

Yelp
It must be a local thing, because I don't get it. The service wasn't great and the food was ok at best. Son in law actually had to have a discussion with a bartender asking why they looked so miserable. Place itself is dark and dingy. I guess it's supposed to be like being in the bottom of a ship? My sandwich had more bun than ingredients. Fries were good. Two people at our table both commented that the roast beef wasn't as spectacular as expected and they've had better elsewhere.
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
So I was expecting a Panera-like cafe based on the description. Not so much. This place is more like a local bar but on the plus side, it's open year round. My boyfriend and I had the roast beef and the catfish. They were good but nothing spectacular. The service was decent but the bartender was obviously overworked. The tables were kind of sticky. Come here expecting a locals bar where you can have a decent lunch.

Yelp
The World Famous Roast Beef sandwich lived up to the hype...delicious!! We've been coming to LBI for years and have only been here one other time, 17 years ago. Not sure why we waited so long. Here tonight with our 13 and 11 year olds and they are loving the food too. And the waitress is AWESOME. If your looking for a casual atmosphere, good pub food and an outstanding roast beef sandwich...this is your place!
