This James Beard-Nominated Chef Is About to Open Her First Restaurant | Eater Twin Cities

"Reopened on March 26 with a new smoker after a four-month closure following a November fire that damaged the custom-built smoker pit, Baker’s Ribs now has three smaller pits in the old pit’s same space; owner Al Killion said the closure was longer than he anticipated. The menu is the same as before, and Killion may try out a few new desserts." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
This place is pure trash either that or my skin color. The food i ordered was horrible the brisket sandwich was literally Jerky it was dehydrated dry even the sauce didn't help. Only thing good was that cornbread cake. The fries were overly seasoned and soggy

Laura C.

Google
Great price, nice people, seemed to be less dining in and more take out. That just meant more quiet time with my food, which is ok with me.

Christine H.

Google
Best brisket and potatoes I've had in years. Best sides to pick from I'm grateful they make brisket baked beans since I don't eat pork. I love this place. Night shift has it rough because morning shift lacks in making food.

jana H.

Google
We really enjoyed eating here. The brisket and sausage were very good. The brisket was so tender. Their portions were good sized. We also enjoyed their sides and fried pies. The staff was very nice. We would visit again if we were ever in the city again.

Deonte G.

Google
This is my honest opinion. I never want to give a bad rating that might hurt someone's business. While I appreciate the reasonable price point, the quality of the food was disappointing. Everything lacked seasoning and taste—it was just bland. The mac and cheese had no flavor at all, and I could barely see the pepper bark on the brisket. Although the ribs did fall off the bone, they were also lacking in seasoning and flavor. I was just driving through Dallas and wanted something quick to eat; I probably should have just gone to Whataburger, which was right across the street. The next time I come back to Dallas, I will not be visiting this place again.

Google
I love their 2 meat plate. Their smoked chicken and turkey are really good. They also have really tasty potato salad, Mac n cheese, Cole slaw, and peach cobbler. The portions are really big so, I can make 2 meals out of what I order. This is a place that we go to quite frequently and love it every time. 🤗

michael M.

Google
Those sloppy Joe sandwiches are too good. I get a order of 3 twice a week. With a chocolate pie.

Lisa H.

Google
My husband & I drove 30 miles one way and was NOT disappointed. The BBQ sandwich called Sloppy Joe was the best. You get 3 sandwiches for $10 which is HARD TO BEAT. I also ordered a plain huge brisket sandwich for $10 and chose my bbq sauce. I prefer the Sloppy Joe overall. At the Garland location they prepare and cook their own pies called The Original Fried Pie Shop which are out of this world on flavor. The Hispanic guy who rang me up at register was polite with a great personality. He recommended the peach cobbler and it was equally awesome as the fried pies.

Yelp
Let's start with the good. I really like the fresh cut fries - both the quality and the seasoning. The green beans were good too, as well as the Texas toast. I'm not a huge fan of fried pies, but it was better than I was expecting. Of course, this is a barbecue restaurant and I have nothing to say about the barbecue. It was edible but extremely average at best. I've been meaning to try this place for years and I always find somewhere else to go because I figure it won't be good. I should've stuck with my first instinct again today. Although I would go back just to get fries if I was in the area.

Yelp
I enjoyed the food I ordered which was a sliced beef sandwich and baked beans. It was delicious. However my husband who had chicken with a side, said it had no seasoning and was bland. I can only assume the service and ambience were good because I didn't pick up the food; had it been, my husband would have commented on it.

Christina T.

Yelp
I slid into the place on a wing and a prayer, 8 minutes before closing. I was anticipating that they'd be less than pleased to serve me but that was far from the truth! Every employee I encountered was friendly and courteou! The place was clean as a whistle and the food, even at closing time, was perfection! Three cheers to Baker's Ribs! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Well, we stopped at the Waffle House in Garland, Tx, last Friday morning, Next to it was Baker's Ribs and It smelled amazing. On our way home we stopped in and the rib plate was Monday's special. Omg it was phenomenal! They also have a habanero bbq sauce that was great. You have to try this place !!!!!

Rhonda D.

Yelp
I took my friend to the Baker's Ribs Mesquite location to celebrate her Birthday. We were pleasantly greeted by Carla who took the time to give us detailed info regarding their menu. She even gave my friend a free dessert! James came to our table to make sure everything was ok and he personally wished my friend a happy birthday! The food was fresh and delicious! I highly recommend Bakers Ribs in Mesquite!

Yelp
Closer to my home than Soulman's and a higher Yelp rating, gave them a try with good expectations. Had a 2 meat plate with potato salad and Mac and cheese. Meat was VERY dry, both the ribs and brisket. Sides were mediocre, at best. All of the sides looked like they had been held over from lunch time. Eating them confirmed this. Disappointing. Cafeteria style ordering. Young man taking my order was pleasant and friendly, older man handing me my food (maybe the mgr?) was not. Not pleasant at all. As expensive is barbecue is, I don't mind. Just not dried out with sides that have been sitting way too long. Not a fan.

Yelp
Had lunch here today. Mixed results. Wife had the ham sandwich basket. I had the pulled pork basket. French fries with both. The ham was very good, flavorful and enough piled on for at least 2 sandwiches. Pulled pork was not so good. Was really pulled. Mostly like burnt ends. Woul have been okay but was very very dry and tough. Left half of it and helped wife with the ham. Fries were good and very plentiful.

Allean K.

Yelp
This is. Where. They. Serve. Good. And. Yummy. Food The. Service. Is. Good. And. The. Every. Thing. Taste. GoodI. Give. Rating. Five

Yelp
Donald at the Haskell location is one incredible dude! His recommendations were perfect. The ribs were delicious!!!! This was the best mac and cheese I've ever had!

Yelp
Went back to my old stomping grounds while I was in Texas this weekend. My Husband LOVES BBQ so I took him to one of my favorite places in Garland. I could almost see the drool shimmering off his mouth when we walked in. You're automatically hit with the most wonderful smokes smell in the world. The specials that had that night was amazing, my son got 3 sloppy joes for $7.00 and they are HUGE. Still have one in the fridge haha.. Husband got his usual 2 meat brisket and ribs and I got the ribs and smoked sausage.. was everything I remembered and more. I love you wished we had good ole Texas bbq here in Louisiana. Maybe I'm biased being a native Texan and all LOL

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Super stingy with their meat and bbq sauce. A whole big potato and literally 1/2 oz of sauce. Two meat plate, 1/2 oz sauce. I won't go back to a place that doesn't know to be a bit more generous with huge plates of food and no sauce. Stingy, greedy.

Yelp
- Pulled pork: moist, good flavor - I'd order it again - Brisket: dry, mediocre - Ribs: mediocre - Potatoes Au gratin: pretty good - Macaroni salad: good, but nothing special - Brisket fried pie: a lot of meat inside, but definitely needed BBQ sauce because of how dry it was - Chocolate fried pie: good, but the chocolate inside wasn't warm. We ate inside the restaurant so I put some of the free soft serve ice cream onto the pie and it was good I'd like to try the pulled pork fried pie and one of the other dessert fried pies next time
google avatar

Viridiana P.

Yelp
I love this place. I'm obsessed with their potato salad, brisket, and ribs! Definitely worth the try and their specials!
google avatar

Melanie C.

Yelp
Went in at 7pm on a Friday. Had the rib plate. Ribs tasted warmed up dry and hard. Also they were extremely spicy which they had not been in recent visits. Didn't offer me a BBQ Sauce bottle. Had to ask for it. Didn't have onions or pickles on the bar like they usually do. Looked like they had put it up already. Had to ask for that. Very disappointed. All I can say is don't go on a Friday.
google avatar

Monte R.

Yelp
I hit Baker's Ribs on road trip. It was a mixed bag. The brisket (burnt ends) sandwich was actually really good: moist, tasty bark, good flavor. I could have eaten a pound of the stuff. The sandwich bun, though, was cheap grocery store quality. The sides were one step above the ordinary sides one usually encounters here in Texas, so that's a good comment believe it or not. Potato salad and cole slaw good but not great. I didn't even finish them though. The BBQ sauce was terrible: runny vinegar style BBQ sauce, not a fan. The fried pies were served cold (sad) so that sucked. Big thumbs up on brisket. Everything else was average or thumbs down.
google avatar

Cody D.

Yelp
Great food. Very good bbq and better than soul mans and Dickey's I feel for sure. The Atmosphere has little to be desired but they have really good bbq and they also have good street tacos as well for a decent price. And I'm sure the fried pies are great I just can't bring myself to eat that poorly on top of bbq.
google avatar

Amanda O.

Yelp
The food was great, the restaurant staff were super nice, especially with us coming in an hour before close (because we had no other choice on a Sunday night). I felt so bad but they were super great. We devoured our food, sooo good! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
This was awesome all around. Moist brisket, great sausage and off the chart potato salad and rolls. Wish we had one up north - just sayin.
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
OOooh Francesca beat me to it! So we were bored on a Sunday afternoon and we decided we should check this place out after debating where we should eat for nearly 30 minutes. The selection of sides were pretty good I just wish 3 veggies was part of the meat combo. Here, you get to pick the sides first and then they hook you up with the meats. For my sides I had the cole slaw, which was nice and crispy, but I was unhappy since I'm always looking for the taste that KFC and Church's produces. I am I expecting too much? As for my other side I selected the scalloped potatoes which were so cheesy and buttery. I suggest that you eat this first before you get disgusted by it's stiffness after it cools. For my meat selection I had the spicy sausage, which wasn't spicy at all and tasted kinda like Eckrich's smoked sausage with pepper flakes, the brisket which was nearly "chopped beef" after playing with it on my plate, and the ham was just fine. Bread selection like Francesca says is kind of disappointing. No fresh bread baked on premises. At least when we were there. So I had some of the wheat bread that they had wrapped up in film. After my brother finished off his bread from making his own little bbq sandwiches, he went to get some more. This time his slices were stale. He could have been eating toast. I liked the decor of this place(for a BBQ joint) really Southern-ish. Texas flags on the backs of the booth cushions, varmint traps on the walls, cement farm animals outside in their "rock garden."

Donna W.

Yelp
Best Ribs, they have peach cobbler. It's hard to find a place that does RIBS right. And this place knocked it out of the park
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Good pulled pork sandwich.. also the cherry fried pie is outstanding.. no line, walked in..
google avatar

Jerry H.

Yelp
Had heard great reviews, the flavors were good, had the cheesy potatoes, pinto beans and sliced brisket sandwich, the flavor was good but it was the driest brisket I have ever eaten. May give it another chance don't know.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Stopped here to try it out - Ribs were good but the brisket and sausage were great! Great potato salad, and perhaps the best pinto beans I have ever had. We all ordered the two meat plate - way more food than we could eat. Friendly service and clean.

Stuart B.

Yelp
This place was a good place for bbq but not anymore. I have given it two different tries in the past three week's and no change. Buns are almost the consistency of a bagel covered with grease from the grill and almost burnt and the brisket was dry and burnt. Whoever the district manager is need to get engaged on this spot if it is to survive!

Eric K.

Yelp
Just went through the drive-thru on 30 & Beltline. Soooo good. Got a sliced beef sandwich and baked potato. Awesome.

Richard G.

Yelp
I tried calling phone number listed and it takes you to a voice mail that has not been activated. I tried both locations listed in Garland Tx. I guess they dont need my business for a Thanksgiving meal I want to order. Ill try Dickeys this Thanksgiving. feeding 8

David W.

Yelp
BBQ was ok. Ordered delivery. Good thing I ordered sauce as it wasn't otherwise included. Fries were peppery and soggy. Cole slaw tasted bad/bland. Fried pie was totally uninspired.

C L S.

Yelp
This was my first visit to any of the Baker's Ribs. Extremely satisfied with quality and quantity of food for a fair price. Recommend if you want one of the meat pies (and my understanding is that this location is the only one in general area that offers them) you may want to call in order for pickup due to potential longer cooking time. I will be back. Today the chopped BBQ Brisket sandwich with fresh cut fries that were still so hot could hardly pick one up (cannot tolerate cold fries), an Apricot fried pie to try later. Next time will call in for a brisket meat pie.
google avatar

Geneva L.

Yelp
Yum yum yum good good good good. Everyone is so nice. Had my first fried pie. Recommend this place to all

Jeremy O.

Yelp
Great BBQ! Service could use some work but the food more than makes up for it! Brisket is fall apart tender and the chicken is moist and delicious!
google avatar

Lance H.

Yelp
Just wanted to do my first ever, mid-meal review real quick. These guys are in our office, catering a birthday lunch as we speak. Catering guy, great set up BRAH Ribs, GREAT Brisket, even better! Potato thing, still wierd and kind of blah Cole Slaw, appauling Rolls, bought at Tom Thumb....two weeks too late. Jalopenos, onions, pickes.....BINGO Now, back to the RIBS
google avatar

Francesca L.

Yelp
I got the 3 meat dinner with pork, sliced beef, and spicy sausage. For my 2 sides I got the scalloped potatoes and corn on the cob. The pork and beef all got mixed together, so I kind of feel like I don't even know if the pork was good or not. The beef was good, but little by little turned into shredded beef on it's own. The sausage was good and tasty, but not really spicy at all. Their house bbq sauce is ok, vinegary, but also slightly smoky. The scalloped potatoes looked better than they actually tasted. The cheese quickly turned into a goopy, buttery mess. The corn on the cob was yummy real corn, not just from a freezer bag. The bread selection was a real disappointment. White, wheat, roll, or texas toast, all the same stuff you can buy at the grocery store. I got the texas toast, which I would suggest since it's actually warm and toasty unlike the rest of the individually wrapped pieces. They have a condiment bar with peppers, onions, and my favorite--PICKLES. I dunno why, but pickles + bbq is the perfect match. There is free soft serve and it's so delicious. Oh yeah they have pretty tasty sloppy joe's 4 for $5 or 1 for $2--- good deal

Yelp
Second time I come to one of these places. First time the experience was awesome, food was great and the service was great..that was the Mesquite, TX location. I just left the Garland, TX location and boy oh boy I don't think it could've been worse. First the lady in the drive thru doesn't tell me they're out of ribs and sausage, she sounds annoyed as hell since I now have to call my wife and ask what else her and the kids would like since they're out of ribs. So I place my order and just chalk it up to end of the day frustration but, then I hear how she talks to the white guy that pulls up after me. She's a lot friendlier, starts off the conversation with "we're out of ribs and sausage but I can get you anything else you'd like!" Completely different attitude with him than what she had with me. If it wasn't because my family and I were hungry as hell, I would've just driven off. Never coming back to this location again.
google avatar

Steffanie B.

Yelp
I am gonna go ahead and boost the good folks off I-30 to five star status. I can only vouch for this locay. They are like always nice (fingers crossed) when I come and always patient and kind (lol). I still am lovin' their fries. And I tried the fried pies: lemon and pecan. I preferred the pecan. Oh and FYI - I have never dined in. Just drive thru.
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
Wow, just had a really great meal! From the beautiful yummy bun of my bbq brisket sandwich to the buttery ice cream at the end of my meal. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Diego S.

Yelp
I drive all the way to this location because it is the only one I have found that serves scalloped potatoes. I love this side. As far as the meats go, I only get two usually. Brisket has always been tender and not much fat. There is usually just one slice with some fat. The turkey is slightly juice and always fresh tasting. I wish they had homemade rolls versus the I Just Bought This Bag of White Bread bread they serve. Oh well, at least they toast their buns when you order a sandwich. I absolutely despise cold buns...no excuse for it. They sell a variety of fried pies (or you can buy frozen and cook yourself at home) but they are a tad pricey. The plus side if they are huge. The guys working the line are never rude or aloof.

Dani C.

Yelp
This was the worst barbeque I have ever eaten, I got a sliced beef sandwich & a beef plate with 2 vegies. The prices on the drive thru sign was not what we were charged, we were charged $19. I had to throw away 1/2 of the beef in my sandwich because it was so full of fat & the bun was so greasy like they rolled it in some type of oil. The girl at the window had these long fake nails that were totally inappropriate for a food service place. I'm used to Dickies which is a lot better quality.

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Just ordered from Baker's ribs. The quality and quantity of the food for the price was not very good. I read other Yelp reviews and it sounded like a great place. I will not be ordering from this place again. I have had way better BBQ here in Garland.
google avatar

Nic F.

Yelp
Their ribs and potato salas are excelent and the corn is sweet. Very easy on the wallet for good food. The sliced beef, however, was a little dry and bland.
google avatar

Justin O.

Yelp
I had the house special: sandwich with two sides. I opted for the sliced brisket sandwich and my companion had the chopped beef. The chopped beef looked good and he said it was tasty. The sliced brisket was very good. The beans were good, not great. The macaroni and cheese was also good, but not outstanding. They give you a squeeze bottle of warm bbq sauce with your meal, which is a great idea, yum. There is also free soft serve ice cream for dessert. Overall, a good experience.
google avatar

Kaleigh B.

Yelp
Been here a couple times and it is good but not the best. I like Dickies better, but I would go back. It was also a bit expensive.
google avatar

Steven D.

Yelp
I wanna give it 4 stars but we felt a little rushed when ordering. The BBQ itself was tender & juicy. The sides were generous & tasty. The fried pies were equally good . Besides service was good .
google avatar

Josh A.

Yelp
***Note this is a review of their fried pies and NOT their BBQ.*** Considering that I have been to the Original Fried Pie shop in Davis, OK on multiple occasions I have tasted some pretty tasty pies (coconut and pecan are the best). I was expecting to get a similar pie here. Cost of the pie was roughly $3.75 and I ordered the coconut flavor through the drive-thru. What I received was a distasteful cold pie which was obviously made at least 6-8 hours in advance. The pastry shell was moist (a bit soggy) and not flakey/crispy; I will not be coming back here for dessert.

Darrion B.

Yelp
I took my black bitch ass up to da spot and on the menu it specifically reads "BBQ SANDWICH" so i ordered the pulled pork BBQ SANDWICH and when i got dat bullshit 1 dat shit aint have no FUCKING BBQ and dat shit was even all the way done
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
Picked up some ribs after golf on Sunday. (been coming here for 15yrs) I think these ribs were that old! End of the rack, hard and stringy. you know, like jerky. The're not usually like that here. But the worst thing was... The container just didn't feel right. So just for s & g's I put the styrofoam container with the "pound" of ribs in it,on my electronic food scale. Yep. It was 12.3oz. Last time I checked, a "lb" was 16oz. Way short, Bubba. Not cool

G Y.

Yelp
We haven't ordered from here for a while. Main reason being food is ok but nothing special and something is always wrong. This time they gave coleslaw when I ordered Mac and cheese. Doubt we will be back.
google avatar

Brittani G.

Yelp
Love coming here for take out or to eat in. I've been coming here for YEEEEAAAARRRSSS! Nick is amazing and always makes us feel like family when we come in. Their loaded potato they have is phenomenal! The potato isn't just loaded with goodness.. but the outside of it is seasoned with salt and pepper. My husband eats the whole thing. It's awesome! And I'm thankful it's as close to home as it is for us.
google avatar

Stephen O.

Yelp
We had the sliced brisket. It had a good smoky flavor and was very tender, not too fat. The best scalloped potatoes I have ever eaten. We had the pecan fried pie and it was very good. Looking forward to my next visit to evaluate the ribs.
google avatar

Matt A.

Yelp
I got the ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. Everything was excellent! The service was top notch! I will come back for sure!
