My sister and I decided to sneak out of the borough of Manhattan, and venture out to the wilds of Brooklyn on the bet from a woman from Sudan. She went on and on about this wonderful supermarket, we just had to go. Shopping carts in hand, we climbed into our Accessaride vehicle, and off we went. It's not far, but further than I expected, as Bay Ridge, Brooklyn is not one of those places I frequent. My sister, on the other hand, is more familiar with places outside our usual haunts.
First of all, Balady is not as big as I thought it would be, and my fingers are crossed that they will expand, and grow into a market the size of Stop 'n Plop. The people that run the place are super. Helpful, cheery, kind and sweet. They let me leave my walker up front whilst shopping, without a second thought. Olives... Oh Olives. Love olives? They've got a million kinds. Drooling over olives, and Olive Oil? So many kinds, from so many places in the Middle East, it's hard to tell which one is the best. Sister bought 3 kinds to taste, I wasn't as ballsy, so bought the 3-liter bottle on sale for $14.99. Not bad for cold pressed, extra virgin! Huge fruit and veggie area, but didn't want to shlep those back home. Bread area is phenomenal! I would have bought every kind, there were so many to choose from. Ended up buying two kinds, one looked like a giant bagel covered with sesame seeds, the other, a flat bread so thin, you could see through it. There is a cheese department, with a very nice guy behind the counter, who freely gave me samples I have never seen before, but I must warn you, almost all the cheeses are highly salty. I did buy a little soft creamy cheese with bell peppers in it. It was sour, with a creamy finish, though also, quite salty. Going on to the butchers area. Chunk of knowledge I never knew: Kefta is not just lamb, it's lamb and beef mixed. You can buy the mixture and make the kefta yourself, or you can buy it in the sealed already made area. I bought a ton of merguez, because I love it, my husband loves it, and we have friends that love it also. AND you can't find it nearby. I bought it spicy and not spicy. There's frozen foods, and aisles of canned goods. Do you believe they have incredible canned babaganooj? I keep thinking I should have bought more. At the checkout, one of the guys who worked there saw that I was having a bad time standing, got me a chair. I have a terrible time with my back. He was an absolute angel. Not only did he get me a chair, but he also went back in the store and picked up a few things I had forgotten.
I loved my shopping experience, but must warn you. Aisles are tight, lots of boxes, too. There is a bathroom, but it's very tiny. Not able to accommodate a wheelchair.
After shopping, my sister and I headed right next door for lunch. If you wanted to find the Leonardo DaVinci of bread, you must go to this cafe. They make a bread that is worthy of being framed! It's large, and the bottom is charred, top crispy.... OMG. We had the lamb shank, the meat perfectly seasoned and melted in my mouth and falling off the bone... could make you cry. No coffee there, but tea, stronger than you can imagine. Almost inky black, with tons of leaves floating through it, and spices I could not recognize. Ask for lots of hot water, you could make 5 or 6 cups with it. We sat for a long time, waiting for Accessaride to arrive, and the server was so kind, as we were sitting way up in front, and the kitchen was waaaay in the back. As I have stated before, kindness personified, caring and sweet people. We are very lucky to have this market, and the cafe next door in New York. Let's hope many more of them pop up all over. We could get used to this.
