13 Places to Celebrate Erratic Behavior

"A mysterious boulder balanced on a few smaller rocks. There’s a sound geological explanation, but there are of course some people who hope that the anomaly has mystical significance. The rock has graffiti on it dating from the 18th and 19th century as the road (an old stage route) has been a major road in the area for centuries. The rock is a glacial erratic left by the last receding glacier about 10,000 years ago. A few (very few) believe the rock is evidence of work of druids." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

One of the places I've been wanting to visit for a while. Nice Joyride from Bristol Connecticut. Definitely a lot bigger than I would have been expected.

Proving that Bruce K. will review anything, here's a five star review of a rock. It's an interesting rock but it is nonetheless a rock. "This balanced rock is estimated to weigh 60 tones. Geologists refer to it as an "erractic." The boulder is composted of a type of granite that does not match rock normally found in this vicinity and is thought to have been deposited here during the glacial period. It has been suggested in recent years that this may be a dolmen - a Celtic ceremonial stone used to memorialize the dead." There is a small parking lot. I do not believe that there is lighting so you'll want to visit during daylight.

Have wanted to stop and see this site for years while traveling. We stopped in a 20 foot RV, which was challenging. Rough, narrow roads. There is a small parking lot in front of the barn beside the rock. Well worth the trip and glad we finally did it.

Cool big rock on small rocks - may be a dolmen a Celtic ceremonial stone used to memorialize the dead. Make sure to single and slow down when entering parking area unless you want to get hit from behind.

I miraculously balanced three seltzer bottles on the sign. It never works that way in Manhattan on signs and mail boxes. Really quite interesting. Saw this story on Ancient Aliens..I've been meaning to go for a while. Rural remote and picturesque. Was surprised to see another couple when I arrived. I was hoping to take a selfie which I never do. It could be they were sent by some other worldly source..At least I got a picture of me and proof I was there...

It’s a large rock…..balanced on smaller rocks! There is a small driveway that can accommodate several cars that I’m not entirely sure we were supposed to be in. I drive by frequently and decided to stop for a moment, unsure if I was on private property or not. If you are a local history buff, it might be interesting to stop for a moment to see the balanced rock and historical barn/garage as well.

A fun trip filled with laughs. If you follow ancient aliens or like weird roadside attractions you will be happy.

Yelp
I had no idea what this place was until my husband explained it to me and showed me a few podcasts and documentaries about it. We were super excited to see the sign when driving through one day so we of course decided to stop. Rating this a five star because it was a very intimate and cool experience since we were the only ones there, but there is really not much to it besides the sign and the rock itself. If you haven't heard about balance rock, you should definitely look into it because it is really cool!!

Yelp
This place is so cool! I didn't even know this existed until I heard about it on the radio and I didn't live too far so I had to check it out. Apparently it's a hugeeee stone that really should be too heavy to be supported by the smaller stones and it's a type of rock that isn't native to this area. There are so many scientific theories, one being extra terrestrial which I thought was incredibly cool. Check it out for yourself and tell me what you think!

Yelp
I've always been intrigued by this spot and I have finally created a Yelp page for it. There is a "ton" of different ideas regarding it's formation. From local lore such as an Indian ritual site and, as the sign states, possibly a Celtic burial site to some of the more mundane "a glacier/ice age event created it. I personally believe it is a deliberate construction, created with great care for important rituals or customs. Anyway you slice it this formation is a very impressive structure that is widely unknown in most areas of local native lore and should really be observed to truly appreciate it's impact. Just standing in front of it, to me at least, inspires a sense of awe. There is a level of dedication and devotion that is palpable. Really worth a journey for whatever reason you have, but the physics and the "why/how" of these stones keeps me coming back to stare at a rock on the side of the road.
