The 31 Essential Kolkata Restaurants

"With multiple outlets in the city, this dessert giant has been a pioneer in giving Bengali mishti (sweets) a contemporary makeover. The chain excels at fusion mishti, which combine traditional Bengali flavors with elements of European desserts. The most famous creation is the house take on roshogolla: The spongy cheese balls are usually boiled in syrup, but here they’re doused in thick, sweetened milk, topped with condensed milk, and baked in foil boxes until a delicious golden brown crust forms. There are other innovative offerings too, like seasonal mango lava sandesh, which imitate a lava cake, or sitaphal souffle that consists of a layer of grainy sandesh studded with custard apples and topped with a layer of airy custard apple mousse." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Balaram Mullick is not just a sweet shop for me, it's an emotion, a collection of memories, and pure nostalgia. During the nearly two and a half years I spent in Kolkata, Balaram Mullick was consistently my spot of happiness. Every visit brought joy, making it a truly unforgettable experience. The quality and tradition here are unparalleled. ❤️

Visited this sweet shop recently during my trip after hearing about their famous "Baked Rasagulla." So, I had to try it, along with a variety of other sweets. The Baked Rasagulla was very good, though a bit too sweet for my palate. However, the rest of the sweets, especially the Sandesh( 🐚 shaped one my favourite ), were excellent and had a perfectly balanced sweetness. The highlight for me was definitely the "Mishti Doi" creamy, flavorful, and just the right amount of sweet.

I came here after asking for an insider tip on a good place for Bengali sweets. I was not impressed by their rasmalai (which is a great favourite of mine, so I have exacting standards), but their mishti doi was fantastic. There's of course a nice selection of shondesh. They also do a vacuum-sealed "special flight pack" of their famous baked rasgullas, which supposedly keep for 15 days without refrigeration. I brought one of those home for the family and we all loved them, though they could have been less sweet.

When it comes to Bengali sweets, Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick is simply unmatched. Their Rabri is my absolute favorite—it’s rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced, easily one of the best I’ve ever tasted. The Sorbhaja is exceptional too, with its unique texture and indulgent flavor that keeps me coming back for more. Honestly, every sweet dish from here feels like a masterpiece. From traditional classics to innovative creations, they never disappoint. If you want to experience the true essence of Bengal’s mishti culture, this is the ultimate destination. A must-visit for every sweet lover!

We had their baked Roshgulla and Mango Dahi , ordered over Swiggy/zomato. Both were good. (In November 2024) I recommend baked Roshgulla to folks who didn't particularly like Roshgullas.

We were served sondesh that had gone bad. Gulab jamun was raw from inside. We came to Kolkata from Mumbai with very high expectations for this store which was worse than slum sweet shop of mumbai. Shame!

DELICIOUSS!! The best place for a sweet tooth near the park street. I tried their baked rosogulla and baked sandesh both were really good, covered in the malai, it was a pleasant and different experience from the regular rosogulla.
