The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"With multiple outlets in the city, this dessert giant has been a pioneer in giving Bengali mishti (sweets) a contemporary makeover. The chain excels at fusion mishti, which combine traditional Bengali flavors with elements of European desserts. The most famous creation is the house take on roshogolla: The spongy cheese balls are usually boiled in syrup, but here they’re doused in thick, sweetened milk, topped with condensed milk, and baked in foil boxes until a delicious golden brown crust forms. There are other innovative offerings too, like seasonal mango lava sandesh, which imitate a lava cake, or sitaphal souffle that consists of a layer of grainy sandesh studded with custard apples and topped with a layer of airy custard apple mousse." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

A local’s guide to eating in Kolkata, India - SilverKris

"A venerable sweet shop founded in 1885 that draws daily queues—especially around 4pm—for an array of traditional Bengali confections, including roshogolla (cottage cheese dumplings in sugar syrup), mishti doi (jaggery-sweetened yogurt), nalen gur sandesh (jaggery and cottage cheese sweets) and baked mihidana; the textures and flavors are richer and more luxurious than descriptions can convey." - SilverKris

Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick - SilverKris

"At its flagship Bhawanipore outlet dating back to the late 1800s, this celebrated confectioner is a must-stop for Kolkata visitors seeking traditional Bengali sweets. Classics such as nolen gur (a jaggery made from non-centrifugal cane sugar), creamy sandesh, mishti doi (sweetened curd), and soft rosogolla soaked in syrup are central offerings, while contemporary creations like butterscotch sandesh and mango mishti doi showcase playful innovation alongside time-honored recipes." - SilverKris

Visited this famous sweet shop during our visit to Kolkata. Have heard of it a lot. So thought of giving a try. The service was good. We tried many varieties of sweets. Felt a bit costly than normal.

A must-visit sweet shop in Kolkata! 🍬 You’ll find all kinds of traditional sweets here, but for me, the highlight was the mango chumchum—absolutely delicious and worth trying.

Bakery and sweets items are good. Namkeen items like patties, hot dogs and others are not that great but manageable. But some of their staff members are very rude.

If Kolkata were a symphony, Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick would be the crescendo – rich, melodious, and dripping with syrup. Nestled in the charming chaos of Bhowanipur, this iconic sweet shop isn’t just a dessert destination, it’s a centuries-old institution where calories come dressed in tradition and charisma. Sweet Legacy, Sweeter Stories Established in 1885 (yes, when Queen Victoria was still writing royal memos), this legendary mishti haven has been sweetening the Bengali soul for over a century. That’s 139 years of sugar-coated legacy — beating many relationships, political parties, and smartphones in longevity. It began as a humble family-run sweet shop, and today it’s a gourmet empire, crafting confections that’d make even French pâtissiers drop their macarons in awe. What Makes It Iconic? - The Baked Rosogolla – Let’s just say, if Tagore were alive, he’d have written odes to this molten, caramel-kissed marvel. It’s rosogolla’s glow-up moment. - Nolen Gur Ice Cream Sandesh – When winter meets dessert, and your mouth meets bliss. - Mishti Innovation Lab – These culinary alchemists have turned everything from chocolate truffles to mango mousse into mishti magic. Even your diet chart raises an eyebrow and says, “Maybe just one?” Fun Fact Morsels: - Balaram Mullick was once a royal supplier to Bengal’s aristocracy, which explains the regal air around every counter. - Every Durga Pujo, the queues here can give the Eden Gardens ticket line a run for its money. - They’ve bagged awards, hearts, and Instagram followers in equal measure — now exporting sweets globally with their vacuum-packed marvels. Final Verdict? Walking into Balaram Mullick is like entering Wonka’s Factory, except the Oompa Loompas wear dhotis and hand you sandesh instead of a life lesson. Whether you’re heartbroken, homesick, or just hungry — this place doesn’t sell sweets. It serves edible poetry. Go ahead, and cheat your diet. The gods (and grandmothers) approve.

I am from Punjab and got a cultural shock when I was charged for even tasting what I buy. In Punjab we encourage customers to taste before buying and are large hearted. Incidentally I bought sweets for 6k but was very disappointed by the attitude of the staff and owner. India is a very diverse country with great cultural differences.

It's like a shopping mall for sweets. Always hustling and bustling...and what varieties! Stunned and overwhelmed by the range of sweets that are traditional and modern but most importantly authentic. The service can be a bit chaotic but you got to manage. They have sweets, doi and snacks sections. All equally good. First you choose whatever you want and inform the server who will be packing everything. He will then give you a card that must be given to the billing counter for fulfillment. Then you show the bill and take your eats. Easy peasy. There newest sweet of gondhoraj doi was fabulous 😍 Love this place and the hospitality is great. I forgot to mention that there's a section for bakeries and chatpata like chutney and biscuits, nimki or chips too. Must visit for locals and non locals.

Customer Service & Staff The salesmanship is terrible. Staff are often rude, make customers wait, and don't pay attention to their questions. A huge issue is that staff are uncooperative and unresponsive when asked simple questions about sweets. They excuse this by saying they are busy, but a well-known brand must maintain polite and responsive service even during peak hours. Product Quality The sweets are generally high quality, but it's not consistent. They frequently mess up the preparation of the milk-based sweets. Pricing Transparency The pricing system is confusing and non-transparent. It makes no sense to charge GST and packaging fees separately. They should simply display a single, all-inclusive price. In-Store Information No sweets have name tags or prices displayed, making it impossible for customers to browse independently. You must point to every item to ask the price, which adds to the frustration with the unhelpful staff.
