19 of Montreal’s Best Bars for Live Music | Eater Montreal

"Known as the first tropical nightclub in Canada when it opened in 1985 and now more commonly as Montreal’s base camp for when the International Nuits d’Afrique Festival takes place in town, this Plateau venue features live performances from Thursday to Sunday. Visits here will feature artists both local and from as far abroad as the African continent, the West Indies and Latin America playing anything from salsa and calypso to reggae and merengue. Check the details of each show, as some feature dinner services to compliment the music." - JP Karwacki

Just visited this bar for the second time, and it keeps getting better! The place is super well-designed, with a perfect balance of style and comfort. The vibe is always on point — great music, amazing service, and plenty of space to enjoy the night without feeling crowded. I caught a live band this time, and they were fantastic! The location is also super convenient. Definitely one of the coolest spots in town. Can’t wait to go back!

Great shows. Sketchy location. Staff are attentive and friendly. Drinks are a bit pricey. Bring CAD. tight space and minimal seating during performances.

Went to a show there last night. Amazing music, good vibe venue, very intimate with good site-lines and acoustics through the room. Only downside was drinks were a little pricey for the quality, but whatever, you go for the music and ambience. Cool place.

The experience was great although the place seemed a little small for the number of people there. For context, I went to see a group (FULU MIZIKI KOLEKTI)

A wonderful African Bar! You can take the bus in Saint Laurent station which is easy. Drinks are not expensive and people are so nice!! Make sure to check the schedule so that you won’t miss the show!

Music generally of very high quality with very good sound. Maybe just a little too loud. The way the staff welcomes you in hinders the overall experience. First you have to pay cash. Once you paid, you go through and they force you to coatcheck your stuff (even though you weren't aware of this when buying the ticket) with even more cash. All of this in a very unfriendly manner. Please, do better.

Nice, cozy venue that was a key location in the 36th edition of the African music festival that showcases a great variety of talent (last two weeks of July). This ground floor venue is a nice community asset that fosters the much-needed co-mingling of people from different cultures. The bar service was good. There are wonderful eateries in this nice area of Montreal including the very fabulous Portugese restaurant, Aldea.

Yelp
While visiting, I snagged a 10 dollar ticket to see a reggae show. Great music, fun energy and simple drink option

Yelp
First of all I had just gotten off of the plane from LA on a 5.5 hour flight and was just looking for somewhere to relax after I had my dinner. Needless to say, I heard this place had great African music so I went there. Great vibes, okay drinks. But the worst part...wait for it... I gave them an American credit card which they held for a tab, but when I got ready to leave, they said that they didn't take non-Quebec debit or credit cards. THEN WHY DID YOU EVEN ENTERTAIN MY AMERICAN CREDIT CARD IN THE FIRST PLACE????!!! That said, it's 2019 and credit and debit cards are global! Put a sign on your door that lets people know the deal!!!

Yelp
Cool room for live music with excellent booking from around the world. Very involved in the Nuits D'Afrique festival, lots of exceptional African bands play here, sometimes for the first time in North America. The layout of the room puts the band in the middle, not ideal for sound maybe but nice for feeling right up close to the action and for dancing!

Yelp
Just got back from a lovely show that was part of the Nuits d'Afrique festival this year, and I would be quite tempted to go back soon. This is a wonderfully intimate venue that brings in some pretty good acts from the World Music scene - a quick look over their program shows mostly a selection of up-and-comers from around the world, with a focus on Africa and the Caribbean. I'm not sure if they are also a regular bar when a show is not going on, or if it's only a venue, but it seems like a pretty fun place to grab a drink, with ample seating space that is all pretty cozy. They also have dance nights on Fridays/Saturdays with "musique tropicale du monde entier". That is not really my fave (I am cursed with a post-1970 reggae intolerance, I know...it's a serious illness that I have tried to cure...) but I bet it would still be a ton of fun. There is no cover charge listed for the dance nights so it's absolutely worth a shot if free. I have to admit, the set-up is a wee bit awkward for a show, with the open dancing space also serving as the main thoroughfare, and though it's small, I never quite figured out where the women's restroom was... Also, I had a cranberry juice that was around $4.50, which to me seems a bit steep for juice...but I think the alcohol prices are fairly standard. They do have some Caribbean themed drinks and also bissap on the menu (yes!) but otherwise pretty standard. The service was good too.
