The Best Bakeries in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Tucked into a small strip mall on Bell Road, Balkan Bakery is a North Phoenix staple for Eastern European baked goods — and a perfect entry point for anyone unfamiliar. Run by Jasenko Osmic and family, the North Phoenix shop specializes in Bosnian-style pastries like burek — spiraled coils of homemade phyllo filled with ground beef, cheese, or spinach, baked until golden and crisp. Mornings bring still-warm kifli, glossy pretzels, and soft French-style rolls, along with sweets like cream puffs and layered keks torta when available. The short menu also includes housemade cevapi — snappy grilled sausages tucked into fresh bread — and a small selection of imported snacks and pantry staples. The space stays mellow and unhurried, often filled with regulars sipping coffee and catching up in Bosnian. It’s open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with early hours and limited seating that only add to the charm." - McConnell Quinn

22 Metro Phoenix Restaurants Still Doing Takeout Right Now | Eater Phoenix

"Pretzels, rye bread, and kifli are some of the staple products that fly off the shelves at this north Phoenix bakery. But the Osmic family’s craft reaches its peak with hearty boureks, stuffed with meat, cheese, or spinach, coiled from phyllo dough that they shape by hand. Two make a big meal." - Chris Malloy

First time here! They helped me pick something out because I was not familiar with the names or cuisine overall! Good prices and the food was yummy and very filling.

My Serbian friends took me here. I liked the meat burek (pastry with meat inside) and would love to come back and try the cevapi (sausages in a pita with onions).

3/30/24: a friend had given us some bread from Balkan and we decided to check it out for ourselves this particular Saturday morning. What a great place. It's an unassuming storefront, but the second you walk in it's heavenly. There is plenty of parking and there is a myriad of items to curb your cravings. Aside from the baked goods, they have a small store with miscellaneous items. We didn't look too closely at them as our eyes gravitated to their breads, desserts, and other items in the display case. The lady behind the counter was super sweet and she explained to us about how the Figaro treat was named after the opera; that way back when, because operas were so long, during intermission, small treats (packed with sugar) were sold to help the audience stay awake for the next half of the show. We ended up purchasing one of each dessert, a savory item, and a small drink (because the bottle was cool). I cannot remember what the hot savory item was called but hey, pastry and cheese, what more do you need? :-) For all of that, it only came to $29. Balkan Bakery is 22 miles from our house so it won't be a weekly visit for us, but we will definitely return -- we must try more of their baked breads.

Luffy would so approve— That is it, that is all ! Baklava is so juicy and full of body and a great crusted crunch encompasses. Don't get me started on the French bread! It's a quaint cozy bakery where all is made from scratch. The young lady that assisted me this morning 06/01/2025 was absolutely refreshing and welcoming of me. Will be a regular for certain!

My new neighbor is Serbian and he found this place online so we tried it. The food is very good, but I was not prepared for such friendly and outstanding customer service! Ms. Aldijana really made us feel welcome! Such a friendly, welcoming place with great food and wonderful service! We will be back!

Great little restaurant/bakery. The Cevapi was outstanding, ordered the large which was huge. Bread was delicious the meat was juicy and tender, so good! Highly recommend!

Google
I finally got a chance to go in and see what they are all about. This is a a family run bakery cooking family recipes. On this visit I had a coffee and baklava. I haven’t had a lot of baklava but this was definitely the best I have had. They are very friendly and service is quick. They also have a little market if you’re looking for European brands. Pretty chill spot, they do have tables, indoor and outdoor if you want to stay and enjoy your coffee and pastry.

This was my first time visiting the Balkan Bakery, and I’m already planning my next trip back! It’s a charming, family-owned spot with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. I came specifically for the Burek, and it absolutely lived up to the hype—flaky, savory, and packed with flavor. You can tell everything is made with care and tradition. If you’ve never tried Balkan baked goods before, this is the place to do it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something delicious and authentic. So glad I found this spot!

Yelp
My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting Balkan Bakery for brunch, and it was such a wonderful experience! We were warmly welcomed by the owners, and the decor felt simple yet inviting, just the kind of cozy atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. We ordered the Chevapi, Beef Burek, Cream Puff, Kilfa bread, and a Cappuccino. The Chevapi, a flavorful ground meat sausage, was perfectly seasoned with onions, garlic, paprika, and spices, creating a juicy and delicious balance of flavors. It was served inside a soft, fluffy Samun bread, absolutely amazing! The Beef Burek was a standout as well: flaky, golden, and filled with savory, well-seasoned meat. The Kilfa bread was light, airy, and topped with just the right touch of sea salt. To finish, the Cream Puff was delightful, with its airy pastry and smooth, creamy filling. The Cappuccino paired beautifully with it, an ideal way to end our meal. If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by Balkan Bakery. Everything is made by hand with care, and you can truly taste the love in their creations.

Yelp
Went there around 8:30am. The line was all the way to the door. There were two people working. I assume husband and wife. Woman did go inside and only man stayed. You could definitely see he was frustrated. But at the same time looked like he knew majority of his clients. He had personal conversations with them. The bakery looked very clean, simple no decor but definitely clean. They do have few shelves with snacks and goodies. We tried borek 10 out of 10 for sure. Very flaky dough and lots of filling. Cream puff was like a nice fluffy dough filled with cloud. The cream was not overpowering sweet and at the same time sweet enough and not too fat. Definitely highly recommend. But be aware this is not 5 minutes long purchase. Be ready to be in line for awhile. But definitely worth it!

Yelp
I am so grateful to have found the Balkan Bakery! I miss the amazing bread we have in Hungary and this place brings me a feeling and taste of home. There is even a little seating area inside to drink your coffee and eat fresh bread. Make sure to say hi to the group of sweet Bosnian gentleman who sit every morning outside eating. Really feels like home. The owners are Incredible too

Yelp
Definitely have to try the Balkan Bakery! The food is phenomenal, you can tell there is a lot of love that goes into it. The service was outstanding, so helpful and welcoming. The pastries are also so good! Next time we're trying the fresh squeezed orange juice as well!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great place to get some Balkan food. The Borek is very light and flaky with the beef. I love the Chevapi with their homemade bread. They have tons of Balkan snacks and treats too. I also highly suggest the cream puffs if they have them. Only a few tables but worth it!

Yelp
Fantastic and 100% originally authentic bakery! I am so happy I discovered this place. Located in a strip mall, the bakery is small, but clean and efficient. Baker is located right there in front of the customers! Food is delicious and freshly baked daily. In fact if you are interested in ordering larger quantities - call ahead and they will have it freshly made within an hour-now that is a good service! Employees are super friendly and are ready to offer suggestions and advice when asked! In particular what I would recommend is burek! It is made with thin phyllo dough which is my favorite-not overwhelming yet still delicious! Kifla was 100% authentic and soft.

Yelp
Loved this place and wish we lived closer! Welcoming staff, interesting cuisine, delicious food, and incredibly affordable prices. My husband and I shared the spinach burek and the cevapi sandwich. We got a loaf of the rye bread to go. The breads are $3-4 and baked fresh daily. The meat in the cevapi was so tasty. The sauce it came with complemented it perfectly. Burek is the thing to get here, though! It was warm and just phenomenal. Keep in mind that they have a walk-in limit of 4 bureks. Bit of seating and the place itself is very casual, but most people got their orders to go.
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
Amazing beef burek with delicate thin crust & soft savoury texture with beef! It is similar to "roti canai" & " murtabak" that I had back home. Friendly service & I like the limited menu with homemade fresh baked pastry & breads everyday!

Yelp
What a great little family bakery. This is definitely my vibe. Friendly service along with a cute place to enjoy a casual breakfast Tried a cheese and egg Burek, which is an Eastern European pastry. It was delicious. And the coffee here is pretty good here too. I'll definitely be back and I'm anxious to try some of the other interesting pastries they have here.
google avatar

Yelp
I see why this place has 5 stars! Small bakery in Phoenix with tasty Burek! My husband and I decided to try three out of four different types of Burek... cheese, meat and Spanish. The were all extremely tasty. The service was great as well. If you are into Balkan food them try this place out!

Yelp
Great food (Burek!) great service, and for a very reasonable price. Interior is clean and comfortable. We try to visit every time we're in the area.

Yelp
Best Bosnian Food in town the place is super clean always friendly service and the food it's to die for we drive 2 hours to stuck up for rations I don't know why I didn't leave this review a long time ago but the food runs out really quick if you don't order your Ćevapi in time it's on you and the Pitas You got to be a early bird to try their amazing food I could rate this place

Yelp
I have been attempting to find the best Baklava and I have successfully found it. This was so good. Next visit I want to try their other desserts and breads! The service was great and the place was clean. I can't wait to try the bread stuffed with meat too. Hidden gem!
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
Awesome place! Had seen it on Yelp and had been wanting to try it for a while so I went here today! The bureks looked too good to resist, I hadn't heard of it before. I got my husband and I cheese bureks and myself a mocha. They only do hot coffee drinks but not a problem. The mocha was super chocolatey, really good. The burek was interesting! I loved the pastry part and used it to dip in my soup at home and it was the perfect combo. The bread loaves here looked amazing too. Would love to come back!
google avatar

Linda W.

Yelp
You got to go early to grab your favorite breads and bureks. I guess 11AM was too late on a Saturday. There wasn't much left so ordered a small chevapi. It was a perfect potion size and flavorsome. I can just eat the Lepinja flatbread alone and dip with hummus. They do sell other speciality items. I better set that alarm earlier next time to try other goodies.
google avatar

Michaela C.

Yelp
Best bakery in town. The freshest bread, pastries! Don't waste your time to go to Safeway, Fry's or Sprout's. It's stomach friendly no blowing belly very tasty and super friendly!

Yelp
Boy am I lucky. I was going to the breakfast club which is a great breakfast restaurant and they were so full that I decided to look around for something else and I discovered the Belkin bakery. Great Burek and a great cappuccino. It was a nice quiet restaurant there are only 45 sets of people there and great service too

Yelp
My first time buying in this bakery, the lady behind the counter was very friendly. I came to try the burkas but they were gone. So I tried two fresh pastries and one sesame pretzel, both were yummy, I will be back for the burkas!!

Deborah C.

Yelp
They are NOT PERMANENTLY CLOSED!!! They are 100% OPEN!!! Absolutely delicious and fresh! Extremely kind customer service! We felt very welcomed and respected
google avatar

Mishel D.

Yelp
The bureks!!! Dough is perfectly soft and flaky and filling is just the right amount of salt and savory. Employees do a great job limiting the number of people inside the business and if you order something hot they will bring it to your car so you don't have to wait inside.
google avatar

Pratiba P.

Yelp
Went in around 9am for breakfast on a Sunday. Shortly after we came in, patrons had started coming in in swarms. Speaks to their quality. Ordered the Cevapi and Beef Burek. Both were absolutely fantastic. Meat was loaded with flavor. Breads were soft, fresh and warm. Limited seating area but we got lucky. And above all, despite the crowds picking up, they were patiently multi-tasking and offering good service. Will be going back.
google avatar

Yelp
I lived in North Macedonia for a few years. Anytime I get a hankering for some burek and ajvar, this is my spot! Very friendly too.

Yelp
A very clean and beautiful bakery! My husband and I wanted to try bread from a bakery and bought a French loaf of bread. I will be coming back to try all the other foods they sell, they look fantastic!
google avatar

Yelp
New to the area, just came in to try the Baklava. It's amazing. The best I've ever had in my life. Normally Baklava is a little too dry for my taste. This was deliciously moist and sweet. I will be back for sure.

Yelp
I have been wanting to stop by here for like forever and for some odd reason it was mentioned three times this week in Foodie discussions. Since I was in the neighborhood today I decided to stop by. So I have to say I know nothing about Balken Food. I walk in and see a small cooler filled with items that I have no idea what they are. I walk around to get to the cashier and I notice the Cream puff and Tiramisu. I know what those are so I order these to go and a Cappuccino to stay. So when I get to the counter I admitted that i had no idea what Balken food was and the nicest man ever explained it all to me. Then my eyes feasted on these yummy looking treats of doughy heaven. I am not sure what they are called but they are Phyllo dough puff pastry filled with things like beef, potatoes and onions filled with spinach and cheese. I ordered a meat filled one and then my eyes rested upon the rack of fresh baked breads. Since I had already finished my shopping I did not need a big loaf of bread. I noticed they had a smaller basket so ordered one of those. As I was paying I noticed much to my surprise they had Dark Rye bread. Wow, that is like finding a snowball in PHX in the summer. The puffed filled meal was so filling. When I got home I was so stuffed but the roll looked so good. I had to take BITE. It was amazing. It was the best bread I have ever had in AZ.

Una H.

Yelp
I love Balkan Bakery! Everything on the menu is delicious and authentic Balkan food. Best cevapi in Arizona!
google avatar

Susie K.

Yelp
Bar none, one of the best Kifle I've had since I don't when! They taste like my moms (massive compliment as she was well known for her homemade breads years ago). Good service & seemingly friendly atmosphere.
google avatar

Luisa H.

Yelp
One of the best cups of coffee I've had in a long time in the valley! This hidden gem offers fresh baked treats daily and a cute retail area with regional foods + pantry items. Go visit and support this local shop!

Gabriella M.

Yelp
Oh, the amazing flavors of Eastern Europe! My tastebuds were dancing in my mouth. The pastries are out of this world. Service is quick and friendly. I will be a frequent visitor.
google avatar

Karolina D.

Yelp
The Burek is amazing!!! Perfect every single time! There is a good selection of products from the former Yugoslavia there.
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
This place is a gem. For those of you that do not know mid/east European cooking this is a must try. The cheese or meat fillo dough pies are their specialty. The outer crispy fills dough with the moist inner meat or cheese filling is addicting. I never buy less that 5 ea. Go you won't be disappointed and you'll be supporting a local family.
google avatar

Ruby R.

Yelp
Excellent breads! We always buy a variety. Never disappointed. Great customer service too.

Karly R.

Yelp
The burek was very good. I tried the cheese one the first time I went, then the cheese & spinach, and the beef when I went back the second time. It has such a good savory flavor, the dough is soft on the inside and a little crispy on the outside. I definitely would recommend!!

Andrew L.

Yelp
Baklava was top tier and the owner was a great host! Definitely would recommend a visit.

Raha R.

Yelp
I had Burek before in turkey and I was always wanted to try it again . I found this small cozy bakery by googling and now my boyfriend and I became regular clients every Sunday. I can tell you The Burek is the best i've ever tried and you'll love it if you want crispy hot fresh Burek! Place has awesome bread and home made yogurt too!
