Baltimore Museum of Art – A Cultural Treasure Open Late Thursday! 🎨🌙 Visited the Baltimore Museum of Art on a Thursday evening, and what a treat! The museum stays open until 9pm (Thursday Only), making it the perfect spot for some post-work art immersion. ✨ Highlights of the Visit: From Rodin's iconic "The Thinker" to Monet’s dreamy brushwork, the collection spans continents, centuries, and galaxies of imagination. Loved the contrast between classic beauty and modern curiosity—you’ll wander from tranquil Buddhist sculptures to experimental abstract forms that challenge perception. The African and Indigenous art rooms are not to be missed—bold, spiritual, and incredibly powerful. 📸 Excellent photo ops throughout. Whether you're drawn to the quiet power of a bronze sculpture or the chaos of contemporary color, the Force is visually strong here. 🚗 Parking was super reasonable at just $9 after 5pm—a rare find for a museum of this caliber. Easy to access and well-marked. 🕘 Extended hours = quiet magic. The evening vibe is calm, uncrowded, and contemplative—ideal for art lovers and peace-seeking wanderers alike. With free admission to the main collection and plenty of space to roam, this place is a gem—whether you’re a casual visitor or a Force-sensitive art sage.

A must-see in Baltimore! The Baltimore Museum of Art offers an impressive and thoughtfully curated collection. The Cone Collection is especially stunning — a true gem with extensive works by Matisse, Picasso, and Van Gogh. I also enjoyed seeing pieces by Georgia O’Keeffe, Monet, Klimt, Gauguin, Botticelli, Raphael, and Sir Joshua Reynolds. The galleries are spacious, peaceful, and well-lit, allowing you to take your time and really experience the art. The museum store is well-stocked with unique, themed gifts and books — perfect for thoughtful souvenirs. A top-notch experience, and free admission is a bonus!

The Baltimore Museum of Art is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with an impressive collection of world-class exhibits, beautifully curated to showcase a diverse range of art. The museum offers an incredible selection of works, including pieces by renowned artists and thought-provoking contemporary installations. The atmosphere is peaceful, making it the perfect place to immerse yourself in art. I loved the modern architecture, the natural lighting, and the engaging layout of the galleries. The museum staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to provide insights about the exhibits. Best of all, admission is free, making it a must-visit spot for both locals and tourists. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking for a relaxing and inspiring way to spend an afternoon, this museum is a must-see. Highly recommend!

This is an oasis in the city. Just relax and refresh your mind with beautiful artworks, from ancient times to the present. The size of the museum is perfect for a one-day visit. The café is great—the food is delicious. From the outdoor seating, you can enjoy views of the sculptures in the garden.

Google
A good art museum. They have a few unassuming Picassos, Van Goughs, and Matisses. The galleries well organized and kept clean and appealing. I also liked the art galleries curated to show art works from different continents.

The BMA is a Baltimore and mid-Atlantic treasure! This museum- with its thoughtful, perceptive, and equitable representation healed all the art school BS I experienced in the late 90s. Free and open to the public, every exhibit that I have seen there has been moving, potent, and restorative. I will return again and again - and will be purchasing a membership. Can't celebrate the creative and community work they do at the BMA enough! Check it out!

The Baltimore Museum of Art was genuinely such a great experience. One of my favorite parts was the room about pollution it had a really strong theme, and the art was all on theme and made you think. But what surprised me was that in the middle of all that, there was this really pretty Monet. The room itself was light and calm, not what you would expect from an exhibit like this and the Monet just stood out in a quiet, peaceful way. I really liked it. Also, the staff were incredibly nice. They chatted with us for a bit and gave us lunch recommendations that were actually good not just touristy spots, but places they personally liked. It made the visit feel way more personal and welcoming.

Beautiful Building. Beautiful collections. A nice mix of everything.. A gem in the heart of the city next to Johns Hopkins University. Also right next to Gertrude's restaurant- AMAZING food.

Yelp
We drove to Baltimore to visit the museum. Despite construction on one of the main roads, we found parking in the small museum lots completely full. Fortunately, the Johns Hopkins University parking structure, located just behind the museum, provided a convenient alternative. It's just a short walk to the museum. Upon entering, we discovered a lovely restaurant, Gertrude's, inside. Unfortunately, it was closing between 3-5 pm on weekends. Nonetheless, the museum itself was beautiful, showcasing an extensive array of amazing artwork. One room was dedicated entirely to Henri Matisse, my wife's favorite artist. We had a great time, and the drive was definitely worth it.

Yelp
The most beautiful show was experienced at the Baltimore Museum of Art. I didn't know that this museum hosted concerts and to my surprise when arriving at the Neo-Soul by Candlelight concert we arrived at this gem. The staff executed the entry with gusto and we were quickly admitted/ushered to the VIP area. We were able to see some of the art work that is placed in the entry and halls leading to the concert hall. Gorgeous pieces. We were VIP, the lower area was two feet from the stage. Decent seat's. Beautiful show, great audio quality for just a quartet to perform all the coolest R&B songs from the past. The parking is a little challenging but we got lucky and found a spot. Overall great venue to watch any musical event. Would recommend if you're coming to watch a show/concert.

Yelp
Art News: I'm sorry to say, that even though over the years I have visited many museums all over the USA, & abroad I have never visited the Baltimore Museum of Art! I was checking Google, when I saw this lovely old portrait! I immediately started to read about it! Painted possibly in 1839, by James Alexander Simpson, of a young & very lovely biracial woman it's a very unique piece! Her name was: Mary Ann Tritt Cassell. I'm glad that it's now on display, for everyone to see & admire! Vincent Van Gogh, always said that art should be in museums, so that EVERYONE could see it, & enjoy it ! I'm in complete agreement with him! NYC.

Yelp
I love that Baltimore has access to such amazing art at no cost. It really is incredible just how many iconic pieces are at the BMA - sometimes it's easy to take the Matisse's the Picasso's the Monet's and so many other works of art for granted. We're lucky to have such easy access to them. Even if you've come here a million times, I guarantee there's exhibits you'll either appreciate in a new way or exhibits that you've never seen before. They make changes on a regular basis especially in the contemporary wing. One thing to note is that the sculpture garden hours are advertised differently than what they are. The plaque on the gate says the garden closes at dusk but we, and many others, were kicked out around 5pm by a security guard. I asked him whether or not the sign posted was correct and he said they closed at 5pm, not dusk. Not sure what all that is about. It's pretty confusing, if you ask me. That miscommunication aside, I really love this museum and would highly recommend planning a visit.

Yelp
Nice museum, and it won't take too long to go through, but it is free, so it's definitely worth it. There is great variety of art times through history and contemporary and easy to follow maps to guide you through what you want to see. I recommend a couple hours here. They have one of the Rodin Thinker statues. The galleries are very spacious to properly display paintings with plenty of seating as needed. The European art displays a lot of good examples back to Medieval art, then examples from Monet, Cezanne, and Picasso among others. When I visited there was a collection of Matisse sculptures. Gift shop wasn't very exciting, but there is a restaurant. Parking has a fee but there is street parking as available. There are some great art examples here, so it's a great site to visit.

Yelp
This museum is definitely a neighborhood gem. I think I visited 3 times, and I enjoyed each time. It's a decent sized museum with plenty of beautiful art throughout the establishment. I love their themes, and I love their gift shop. There are plenty of books, art, and trinkets in the gift shop. Gorgeous views throughout the museum and hallways. Many photo ops. The customer service is always on point. Kind, helpful, and efficient. I'm looking forward to the next exhibit for display.

Yelp
If you enjoy art, spending an hour or two at the Baltimore Museum of Art is worth it. With free admission (except for special exhibits), the over-100-year-old museum is housed in a grand building designed by John Russell Pope of Jefferson Memorial fame. There's paid street parking nearby, but I opted for the museum's gated parking lot. If you stay under 30 minutes, it's free. (30-60 minutes is $12.) I walked into the museum and did a speed visit. First of all, the museum is much bigger than I expected with a sculpture garden, two different buildings, and several floors of old art to contemporary art. Restrooms are spread throughout the building and winding staircases make the building itself art too.

Yelp
It is a wonderful museum located on the campus of John Hopkin University. Access to the museum is free to everyone. Exhibits and pieces range from the Old World to the Modern and everything in between. The coverages of certain parts of the world and time period are not extensive, but they are sufficient enough. A pay garage is located a short distance to the museum.

Yelp
It shouldn't come as a surprise that pretty much every historic city on the East Coast would have at least one terrific art museum. In Baltimore, you will find this gem in a park setting on the edge of the Johns Hopkins campus. General admission is free, and special exhibits sometimes have paid admission, but we've found those to be very reasonably priced. The Cone Collection is a magnificent addition to an already stunning museum, and only in Baltimore will you find the spectacular John Waters Restrooms. We were fortunate enough to visit during the run of Making Her Mark, a limited time exhibit of European artwork created by women between 1400 and 1800. There are amazing examples of lacework, drawings, rolled paper(!), wax art, porcelain, fabric, woodwork, as well as sculpture and painting.

Yelp
The art scene in Baltimore is truly elite - and the BMA being one of the pinnacle. This museum is beautiful from the exterior - the sculpture garden and restaurant Gertrude is a staple in the city. What's great about the BMA is its mission to fund and support black local artists. Their curated exhibit from last year: Hip Hop through the ages was amazing. It also has a big Matisse collection from the Baltimore sisters Claribel and Etta Cone. They offer community weekends once a Sunday (I believe) for free showing of special exhibits and late night Thursdays. It's free to visit which is also exceptional. There's classics and modern and sculptures. Must visit for locals and visitors.
google avatar

Steffie S.

Yelp
The Baltimore Museum of Art is free! It is filled with so many beautiful pieces of art, but the pride of this museum is its Matisse collection. The collection was donated by the Cone Sisters, and is well worth seeing. There are also some Monets, Degas, VanGogh, Picassos, and more. They also have a well-appointed lunch area. We only had a coffee, as we were headed back downtown to find crab. Take the time to check it out for an hour or for a day. There's so much to see here.

Yelp
I'm annoyed at myself that I haven't been here more often. Maybe it's because the DC museums are a bit closer and better known to me. Maybe it's because I've been living under a rock. I know Baltimore is famous for it's art scene, but I need to do more exploring in that realm! Starting here. This is a great museum, free to explore, and very interesting in their exhibits! They have a huge collection of Matisse works, I think the largest in the world I might have heard? And they are well worth exploring, if you are a fan of his works. You will also find Van Gogh, Renoir, Gaugin, and Rodin, among others. (I think they even have a Warhol, if you're into *that* kind of thing... lol j/k, I dig modern art too). I actually dig how eclectic their collection was. They definitely have the classics covered, but their modern art collection and special exhibits were equally enjoyable and incredible. I appreciated the variety on display, not just the "stodgy old fuddy-duddy" oils on canvas, but mixed media, video art, and other contemporary examples. I need more time to explore everything they have to offer. And while I'm there, I really need to book a table at Gertrude's. I keep hearing how wonderful that place is too, so maybe keep an eye out here later this year for a review from yours truly for that spot as well! ;)

Yelp
I stopped by the Baltimore Museum of Art to visit the Art After Hours: The culture event. The Culture: Hip Hop and contemporary Art in the 21st century event was completely sold out. They had a DJ, tasty appetizers by H3irloom Food Group, and complementary Topo Chico. The Culture exhibit explores the past two decades of hip hop through a wide range of paintings sculptures, photography and video. This exhibit is amazing, I enjoyed the range of art pieces. I was able to take videos and pictures throughout the exhibit. Great experience overall, I have never visited an exhibit after hours, very cool concept.

Yelp
A visit to the BMA is the perfect thing to do on a rainy or super humid summer day, or on Thursday nights, when they're open until 9. Admission is free, and you can wander around for hours. The security guards, who blend seamlessly into the background (unless you step too close to a painting), were very knowledgeable about the art and gave good recommendations. There is a small sculpture garden near the entrance, and a larger one by the restaurant on the other side of the building. Both are great for a stroll and some fun pictures. The gift shop is a whole destination on its own. They sell tons of art books and a few copies of works in the museums, and the rest is a carefully curated selection of home goods you never knew you needed. Like dessert plates shaped like flowers or kitschy tea towels. There are lockers on the first door to stash your stuff if needed, and you can pay to park in the adjacent garage or on the street. There is also a ton of free parking in the neighborhood if you don't mind a bit of a stroll.

Yelp
I haven't been here since I was a child and it sure did bring back some old memories. I can in on a Sunday because my daughter was having her art work displayed here as part of a Baltimore County Public School event. Parking is on the premium so I would advise you to make sure you arrive early and are prepared to walk. They do have two small lots but they are expensive, free for the first 30 min but12 dollars for anything over that. I found some street parking g free on weekends about a block away. Admission is always free but some special displays you may have to check for so I recommend checking them he website before you come. The school display was free. The museum is large and has ample space around every display. We toured the entire museum and not just the area where my daughter had her art displayed. There are two floors with and elevator near the disability accessible entrance. I highly recommend bringing your kids by any time to enjoy the art work.

Yelp
Beautiful free museum founded in 1914 , has more than 95,000 objects . The gallery has more than 1,000 works done by Henri Matisse , the cone collection , modern art , prints , drawing and photographs. The galleries currently showcase collections of art From Africa ,European art and American paintings and sculptures as well as Antioch mosaics, art from Asia and a sculpture garden . The museum is located between Charles village and not far from home wood campus of johns Hopkins's university . Definitely a must see if you are in the area . Parking is not free but if you go on the weekend parking is free near the adjacent park across the way.

Yelp
Its so nice to live in a city where I have access to such great museums! I have been here for special exhibits, for events, for shows, even just to eat at the attached restaurant and every time I have a great experience. They tend to do very diverse rotating exhibits so its always something interesting and nice to see. I even went once when they had art from local city school students and how cool is that?! They also have a very cool sculpture garden thats nice to spend a little time on a nice day. So if your looking for a good museum, a good lunch or some nice outdoor space this is it.
google avatar

Yelp
There no other great place to spent a peaceful afternoon in the middle of Baltimore than this museum. Collections are strategically organized a way one can enjoy all the floors in one way or another.
google avatar

Daja E.

Yelp
A really great time for everyone! This free museum had so much to offer the community. To start off they have lockers available when you walk in so you don't have to carry many things with you. Any backpacks must be worn on the front on the body. I really enjoyed the multi rooms/ floors that provided so much knowledge not only to Maryland but the surrounding places too. This place features new things all the time with interactive pieces/rooms. I love that they also have a whole restaurant( you need a reservation unless sitting at the bar). I'm excited to return for all new finds next time I visit. This place also features gender neutral bathrooms

Yelp
Beautiful free art museum! Had a Joyce Scott Exhibit for $15 that was absolutely worth the cost. Took about 3 hours to see the whole museum. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
The Joyce J. Scott exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art did not disappoint! The show was beautifully curated to show the diversity and complexity of her body of work. I loved how we were able to interact with materials she uses to better understand her process of making. The BMA does such a beautiful job with community engagement which was showcased at the end of the exhibition with the community weaving visitors could contribute to! The show was very moving!

Yelp
Such a great museum! Convenient location. Ample street parking and attached lot if needed. Took a little under 2 hrs to enjoy each of the rooms without feeling rushed. I love that this museum is free to the public. You can tell the donations they receive go into the upkeep of this building. Everything is pristine, highly guarded (they have security almost everywhere) and in such good condition. There's a great amount of contemporary Downstairs paid tribute to African, Asian and Oceanic art while upstairs gave way to the classics and modern art style. The layout is fairly easy to navigate. The rooms are bright and well spaced to allow for traffic flow. The only congested space was the gift shop for obvious reasons. I also really enjoyed seeing this museum pay tribute to tribal and Indigenous pieces as well, not just one or two pieces but full rooms. Definitely worth a trip if in the surrounding area.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Our extended family visited the museum over Thanksgiving. What an incredible collection! The variety of artwork displayed could easily occupy days of visits but we only had an afternoon to see what we could of the permanent collection as well as the temporary exhibits which featured regional artists. The collection of Tiffany silver and glass is breathtaking. It was an unexpected treat to see the Woodlawn Vase which is awarded at the annual Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. The rooms are beautifully lit and the walls are the ideal colors for the artwork. Take your time and explore as much as you can. There's something to see for every artistic taste. I'm looking forward to visiting again on my next trip to Charm City.
google avatar

Cheryl T.

Yelp
Had not visited here for many years. The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century exhibition is so well curated and varied. Thank you for this show. I loved it.
google avatar

Dana Z.

Yelp
LOVED my first ever visit to the BMA. I think I lucked out on the parking. There was only one spot left in the lot on a Saturday (maybe they have another lot?? They must??) Parking was $12. We spent about 3-4 hours here and I feel like we got to see mostly everything. Some exhibits were under construction so it might take others longer depending on what is open. They had an eclectic mix of different time periods, regions, and mix of well known and lesser known names. I really enjoyed their modern/contemporary art. There's definitely plenty to see. I LOVE art museum gift shops and they had a fantastic gift shop here.

Yelp
Great museum to visit next to Johns Hopkins University. The Baltimore Museum of Art has an amazing collection of contemporary art, sculptures, American and European paintings and large collections of works from Asia and Africa. If you are a fan of Henri Matisse, the museum has over 1,000 pieces of his works. Interesting to see the Cone Collection. Two sisters, Claribel Cone (a pathologist) and Etta Cone (a pianist), amassed an impressive collection that they donated almost intact to the Baltimore Museum of Art. The natives of Baltimore collected works on yearly trips to Paris by artists including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. When they went to the opera, they often bought an extra seat for their purchases that day. They were among some of the first patrons of Henri Matisse and collected over 500 of his paintings and works. The sisters also collected American art, costume jewelry, American furniture, Middle Eastern silks, oriental rugs, Japanese prints, and Egyptian sculptures. Nice also to see "The Last Supper" by Andy Warhol. A beloved painting that was the center of controversy. It was almost sold for $65 million in 2020 to raise funds for future acquisitions. The sale was suspended due to public outcry. The Baltimore Museum of Art is free to the public. Make a timed reservation online. Masks are encoraged. Passes are not needed for the Sculpture Garden or the gift shop.

Yelp
I had a great time visiting this museum on a Saturday morning. I arrived around 11:30am, and it was pleasantly quiet with not many visitors yet. I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of impressive collections on display. The museum offers a diverse range of exhibits that cater to various interests, which was unexpected but greatly appreciated. After exploring the museum, I decided to try the brunch special at the museum's restaurant, and it was fantastic. The food was delicious, and the overall experience was enjoyable. The museum's layout was easy to navigate, making it convenient to explore and appreciate the exhibits. I highly recommend visiting this museum--it's a fantastic place to immerse yourself in art and history while enjoying a satisfying meal.

Yelp
I enjoyed my time here. The exhibit that I came to see was A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration. This exhibition was so powerful. I especially loved the visual presentations they had. The exhibit ends tomorrow, but, I'm glad I was able to see it before it departed.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
I love the Baltimore Museum of Art! I was looking for a particular painting by Elihu Vedder, The Sorrowing Soul Between Doubt and Faith, and a Security Guard was able to point me in the right direction. You do have to pay to get into special exhibitions, but most of the BMA is free. I was disappointed that the Contemporary Wing was closed for an installation but I can come back another day. Thank you, BMA, for providing the city and region with access to world-class fine art.
google avatar

Pinkpeony L.

Yelp
This was far better than I had expected, which was the usual, stereotypical large art museum. It has a great Matisse collection, which I knew about, but I wasn't aware of its excellent contemporary exhibits in textile, pottery, and mixed-media that were very relevant to current societal issues of race, gender, and class. I'll definitely go back. So A+ for this museum. (Also, there are free lockers to leave your coats, luggage, whatever, so you can walk around unencumbered.)
google avatar

Kayla P.

Yelp
Great Free Museum! Excellent collection of paintings and sculptures. They seem to switch out their exhibits quite frequently also which makes it nice to visit every few months!

Yelp
This museum is a lovely place to spend a special day. We went there for our anniversary, and ate at Gertrude's.
google avatar

Yelp
I am in disbelief I have not reviewed the BMA. Every time I come here I never want to leave. While visiting the BMA I realize art can be whatever you make it. There were exhibits of canned vegetables and fruit that were beautiful and had true depth and meaning. I enjoyed watching movies and documentaries here as well. It's relaxing and it's also free! Parking is great as well.
google avatar

Maya L.

Yelp
An amazingly cool museum about an hour away from DC. I'm embarrassed to say that I was unaware of this place until recently but glad that I made the trek. They have a vast collection of Asian, African, Modern, and Contemporary art...Warhol, Amy Sherald, Kara Walker, etc. Ima museum shop geek and theirs is impressively well stocked with cool books, jewelry, bookmarks, and more. Adjacent to the museum is a restaurant which we didn't get to patronize this time but will return to try. The sculpture garden is beautiful and well kept. Parking is plentiful, safe and inexpensive. Overall a Saturday well spent!

Yelp
I visited the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) in Baltimore, Maryland recently. It had been a number of years since I had visited due to the pandemic. Love this museum! They are now no longer requiring reservations to visit the museum. Masks are optional but suggested. The BMA has a wonderful art collection. I always enjoy checking out the Cone Collection that the museum features. They also have wonderful collections of modern art and sculpture. We didn't get to check out the current special exhibit but it looked fantastic. Museum entrance to the general collections is no charge (yay!). There is a charge to view special exhibitions. There is parking for the museum in a paid lot or on the street (also paid parking). The museum features an amazing restaurant - Gertrude's. I have written a separate review for Gertrude's. Everything is well kept and clean. Clean bathrooms. Friendly staff. Neat and quirky museum gift shop. I recommend a visit to the BMA whether you are a visitor to our city or a Baltimore native.

Nazier R.

Yelp
I'd give this place 1000000000000 star ratings, this was my first time ever visiting this museum and the variety of artwork is impressive. I've been looking for a particular artist and I was surprised when I was able to find a piece of memorabilia regarding the artist. I will definitely visit this museum again, definitely work the visit.

Yelp
I have nothing but great things to say about this place. I had such a great experience. Me and a couple of friends got together and decided to visit a museum and I'm glad we picked this one. Plan your visit ahead though, the parking lot has limited parking and street parking goes fast. They encourage all visitors to wear their mask throughout the gallery and social distancing is still in effect. Make sure you visit the website to get your free passes. The staff ensure everyone enjoys their visit and They are on top of cleanliness through the building. My two favorite exhibits are Richard Yarde work and guarding the art. I learned something new and intriguing with every work of art I saw and it was quite satisfying. Can't wait to plan my next visit for the upcoming exhibits in April 2022.

Yelp
Wonderful collection of art in a beautiful environment. People were friendly and welcoming. We had a really nice lunch at the restaurant. I want to go back!

Yelp
I visited the BMA for a wedding, and it was amazing. As a venue, everything was organized and laid out for guests to easy navigate. The space is absolutely stunning and did not disappoint on setting the stage for a magical moment. During my visit, there were actually other weddings in-progress. Fun fact: there was zero interruption on our event or others. The layout is great for hosting several events concurrently. If you are looking for a great venue, please check out BMA. The service for seated food, passed foods, and bar service was great. The staff was super friendly and even made exceptions for dietary needs. The coffee/tea service was also really good. One thing I appreciated was the timing and ensuring that things stayed on track. We did have a wedding planner involved with our event, but also BMA's attention to detail helped make this a huge success. The bride and entire wedding party enjoyed the process from start to finish. BMA is worth adding to your list of possibilities!

Yelp
Really enjoyed my time here. You have to purchase your tickets online because of Covid. The museum is free. When you walk in they take your name, and the gave lockers and place to hang your coat. You have to wear your mark, because of Covid protocols. There was so much great art. The place was spotless. The art was categorized by cultures, and generations. Please check out this beautiful museum in Baltimore.

Yelp
Highly recommend this museum for anyone in the Baltimore area! Admission is still completed free! Yay! Plan a day here as it's larger than it looks. There's a bit of something for everyone! Don't miss the Cone exhibit! Gertrude's does not do carry out on the weekends FYI!

Yelp
Amazing Matisse and Tiffany collections. Went for the John Waters exhibit and was not disappointed. A good day in a great little museum.

Yelp
To continue my museum binge I head to the Baltimore Museum of Art on Friday afternoon. I RSVP tickets (it's free) and started on the first floor. This housed all the African, Oceanic and Asian art. So much to look at and a lot of space to wonder around without bumping into anyone. Lots to learn and understand how ancient peoples interacted with art, culture, spirituality and life. On the second floor consisted of contemporary art, modern art and Euro art. Would recommend the contemporary art section there was so much to interact with and gets the ideas going. The modern art was also diverse with the staple Euro/American artists but also some BIPOC and woman artists. I got through the museum in about 4 hours but could take longer if you enjoy reading everything/taking everything in. Would recommend wearing comfortable shoes and having something to eat at the cafe, because after this trip I was exhausted. Nonetheless would recommend to all!

Yelp
Wow! I hadn't been here in years. It's still a wonderful museum. We went on the spur of the moment while we were in the neighborhood. So, we only had 40 minutes to see it all. We started with a quick tour of the first floor: Africa, Asia, Oceania, Americas and a quick glance at Matisse. I was sad that the dollhouses weren't on display. I always enjoyed looking at the detail when I was younger and then oohing and aahing over them with my daughters. Then a quick run through the second floor including The Thinker by Rodin!! It's so amazing that one of the copies of this famous piece is in this modest Baltimore museum. Unfortunately, there were a few too many nudes. So, we had to navigate circumspectly. By the time we got to the third floor, it was almost closing time and the staff made sure we knew it. But they did let us go up for a quick walkthrough. I'll have to go back when we have more time!

Yelp
When I was younger, it was this museum that really introduced me to Henri Matisse. It was a lightbulb going off -- or on -- moment: his use of color and his repeated refinements to produce what we could mistakenly see as foolishly simple. His over 500 works here were originally part of the collection of the Cone sisters. As you walk through the galleries and become aware of the thousands of iconic works by Matisse and others that these two assembled during their lives -- not all on display, of course -- it's really stupefying. In 2019, this museum took what shouldn't be thought of as a courageous act (but it was): it sold some high-profile works by internationally famous artists so that it could buy works by contemporary women artists and artists of color. What is lost is more than made up by what it gains: diversity is a strength, obvious especially in a cultural institution. On a basic level, it makes visits more compelling because seeing work from more perspectives benefits everyone. Inclusivity is societal comfort food. My visit here, weeks before the current pandemic shut the world down, has become more resonant for me. Like the gestures this museum has taken to try to balance the narrative voices from whom we hear, it's a reminder that we're all in this together. It's time for extending grace, empathy, and opportunity to each other: it makes humanity shine.

Yelp
This was an awesome place to visit. It was free to enter (huge plus) and the exhibits were lovely. The parking is a little tough at times as there isn't much in the paid lot area so try to get there early if possible. The staff was very welcoming and helpful also.

Yelp
It's been a while since my last visit but I knew I needed to do finish this review. The collection displayed within these walls is truly world class. With the numerous Smithsonian art museums and National Gallery so close by in DC I was expecting to be a little disappointed . . . . I most definitely was not! From the Matisse collection, to the sculpture gardens, to the African art. My personal favorite are the Antioch mosaics acquired in the 1930s through a Princeton University archaeological excavation. It's powerful viewing these walls . . . . Which were most likely floors originally. (It does bother me that these are no longer in their original location but I don't know the circumstances of their removal. It may have been to make way for modern construction or some other reason.) The museum is free but there is a nominal fee for parking in the lot. And it doesn't hurt that tha Paper Moon Diner is so close by either. Check it out and consider a continuation of your art museum experience. TRUST ME! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
FREE!!!! I cannot believe it when I heard from concierge to check this place out. On top of that, they have also. FREE bus (purple line) that will take you here and back from the inner harbor. This place display a variety of art from multiple eras and regions, pleasure to walk through, neatly organized, you are allowed to take pictures. The museum store is impressive. More than your typical museum related items. Lots of cute affordable presents to get your love ones. Will definitely come back again :)

Yelp
This is one of my favorite museums and I particularly love that it is free! They change their exhibits a few times per year, which is great and usually lines up with when I have an in town visitor so I always see the new stuff. On my visit Saturday I fell for a Black mermaid statue at the entrance of their Contemporary exhibit. I must say, the Contemporary wing is my favorite part of the museum. They always have some cool and new paintings or abstract art. I also really enjoy the African and Asian artifact on the first floor. I skim over the portraits of nobility and such - those haven't changed since I've been going to the BMA. In addition to the museum, there's the attached restaurant, Gertrude's, which has delicious food. Even past that, there's a sculpture garden right outside the restaurant that has really cool works of art.
