Best Late-Night Food in Austin Restaurants | Eater Austin

"The Westgate Chinese restaurant has a nifty drive-thru window making those late-night pickups that much easier. This is a great spot for build-your-own noodle or rice bowls, tom kha noodle soup, and an array of vegetarian dishes including Mandarin broccoli and Thai cashew — all of which can have a protein added or go with tofu. It’s open until 2:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 3:30 a.m. Friday through Sunday, with drive-thru pickup hours until 2 a.m. nightly. Takeout orders can be placed in person or online or DoorDashed." - Nadia Chaudhury

The appetizers were yummy (especially the shrimp, it had a fluffy texture to it). The General TSO is my usual safe choice but we had the basil wings as well (very interesting + savory) and Shanghai Beef (a bit tough in my opinion but the sauce was very good). Portions are pretty big, if you are a light eater then I would recommend to not order much or be prepared to take some to go.

Google
This food was so bland, hardly any flavor at all, overpriced, ambiance was terrible and bathroom was kind of gross, it felt like a fast food restaurant but with way higher prices and poor quality food. The server was lovely, this was the only positive. I don't care if this place is convenient (location-wise, open late, constantly mailing us coupons)... never again! Because we have standards and know we can do so much better.

Google
Overly priced DISGUSTING. Hard to be nice because we paid so much for the nastiest food I’ve ever tasted. We ordered the soy sauce garlic chicken with chicken fried rice, hot & sour soup , and the free chocolate cake. If you want to overpay for white rice with rotten and undercooked rice, and maggot broccoli , or your food cooked in pots that have never been washed this is your place We were horrified and will NEVER GO HERE EVER AGAIN. Keep your money And if I could give -000000 stars I would. I have never had to review ANY business before… it was this bad

Google
If you start to miss poor quality food on economy class flight, come here. All these for 36, and heavily salted. The server repeat different orders back to me every time, and successfully missed part of my order. What’s more? there’s extra 6$ for late night orders that you won’t see anywhere else. LOL

Google
I was never at the location but I did order from there. I will admit that the advertising for the food isn’t the best, and I did hesitate to order for my first time. But this food was phenomenal. Not only is the food amazing. The portions they give are very generous. I have no other words besides the fact that this place has amazing fried rice

Google
I got sick eating this food. I ordered wings, soup, egg rolls, beef/broccoli, chicken teriyaki and combo with noodles. The wings were under cook. The beef tasted old along with that questionable grayish color chicken. The shrimp could been cooked a couple mins longer also. The soup was good. Everything else had no taste and was not fully cooked. They also have no prices on menu and provided no receipt. It was my first and last time at this place.

Google
This place is great! Food is delicious, and staff are very kind. Shout out to Gavin, who is always a pleasure when I come here.

Google
This is my favorite chinese/thai restaurant I have ever been to. I have recommended this to everybody I know. It is by far my favorite late night dinner spot. The food is fantastic and the portions are great for me, I almost always have food left over for another meal. I love everything about this place, especially the employees, specifically Gavin, who is one of the nicest people I have ever met. The atmosphere inside is relaxed and quiet with nice soft lighting. The drive through is shockingly quick - I have never waited more than two minutes between ordering and getting my food. I come here all the time, often multiple times a week, and I will never switch to a different late night drive through restaurant. If you go and enjoy the food, make sure to come back a few times, and they will treat you so incredibly well. I hope the best for this restaurant and all of its employees.

Yelp
This place is by far the best hangover Chinese, night in, lunar new year, movie night, affordable takeout food. There are "fancier" Chinese places in the city to order from but they don't travel well whatsoever. Bamboo bistro travels incredibly well. The food is classic, comforting Chinese food. Generous portions. Great for large parties. Quality ingredients. I served this when I hosted my sex and the city season two watch party - and it was a hit. Don't sleep on the lo mein.

Yelp
I ordered the food through doordash. I read the reviews and decided to order. This place had 9k reviews with 4.5. I'm thinking it's going to be great. I usually go to yelp and Google to read reviews and see the rating. It was late and I wanted Asian food. I got the pad Thai with tofu and my kid got chicken fried rice with no veggies. Of course on doordash the price for each dish was over $17. I get it, door dash have to make their cut. I would say overall, the food didn't have flavor and tasteless. I had to put Sriracha sauce on my noodles and my kid added soy sauce to her rice. I don't think I would return to this place. I wish the food tasted better. I love trying out new Asian restaurants when i can. My partner doesn't care for it too much.

Yelp
It's rundown but doesn't miss. They were quick to order, priced fair, and tasted as you'd expect from an Asian fusion. It's definitely a bit dingier but honestly not a problem for me.

Yelp
Mystery place looks like it's closed but when u enter it's so good the food is great here and my family I went here and when I tell u this has to be the best Chinese food I've ever had in my whole life of living we've always been passing by it in our time living here in Austin and its so life changing.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst I've had in Austin. No flavor at all the Thai basil soup was salty as hell. I ordered the Thai basil fried rice, no basil taste or a basil leaf in sight!! I'm highly pissed off that I spend $70 on this
google avatar

Med F.

Yelp
I picked an order to go of chicken with cashews on fried rice. No taste and probably one of the worst Chinese meals I have had. Place looks run down. Service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
Consistent, good food, good proportions and inexpensive. This is my go-to Asian food spot. The jalapeño crab Rangoons and Thai soup are 2 of my favs. The soup is soooo good, I want it in my veins!! Perfectly spicy, citrusy, and salty. These are some of the best Rangoons too. I got general tso chicken for the first time, wasn't my fav it had a very slight burnt taste BUT it was still good.

Mike H.

Yelp
Service was very poor. Expensive compared to quality and amount of food. Staff was rude to me personally. Dingy bathroom, run down rest of building. Last time I eat at this establishment.

Yelp
Finally tried this place out. It was quiet dining inside, and our food came quickly. Will be returning

Yelp
I want to give like 3.7-3.8 stars but I'll round up to 4. This place makes decent to go Asian food, I would say it's just a slight step up from your Panda Express quality and definitely has more options on their menu, but it's no "nice sit down restaurant." The interior is 3/5 stars at best, it's whatever. Not fancy by any means, kind of reminds me of an older diner or a McDonalds (so you can eat there - but why would you when you can get the food to go and eat in the comfort of your home?). I ordered the chef special seared tuna which comes with sautéed spinach/bacon and rice, and my mom got their version of orange chicken and shared some with me. The food was on the salty side but it got the job done, it killed the craving for Asian food. For the price, it's just standard i would say. If you're wanting a nice sit down Asian restaurant meal, try somewhere else but if you want slightly nicer to go asian food this is a fine option.

Yelp
I had a barber appointment next door so I stopped in as I had been to the Bamboo Bistro near the Domain. There were zero prices on the menu, the dining area and exterior of the building were harrowing, and the view of the kitchen was rough. Still, the food was decent -- I highly recommend the jalapeño cream cheese wontons. The chicken is always the same...overcooked and quite flavorless. The fried rice was lacking flavor as well and was super oily. The staff was super nice but I won't be back...
google avatar

Liya O.

Yelp
The food at Bamboo Bistro is just okay--nothing special, and definitely not worth the price. The portions are really small for what you pay, which left me feeling unsatisfied. Overall, it's pretty underwhelming for the cost.

Arunima G.

Yelp
The food is super good. Spicy ramen is also good. It's dry and different. The service and atmosphere is very nice. Every rime I've been there they were so nice. Gave me a fre calender this time.

Yelp
Lunchdrop order so no review on the restaurant itself. Just the food I got. Went with lettuce wraps since I thought it would be a little bit of a lighter lunch. Lettuce came in a ziplock bag and they were crisp and clean. The filling was made with chicken, water chestnuts onions etc. and also included a dipping sauce (which given the saltiness of the filling really wasn't necessary). I wasn't super excited about the filling since it mostly just tasted like soy sauce. It lacked umami and sweetness that would balance out the saltiness of the dish. I don't think I would order this dish again.
google avatar

Lillian S.

Yelp
The food is good. Thai basil fried rice was not as good as my first two visits; it's still good: less fragrant, less basil, less vegetables (I ordered them instead of a protein). The exterior really needs a facelift. I went to pick up food and thought for a moment that the restaurant was closed. The drive through order menu looked really old and damaged. I hope they will consider changing the outside appearance; it may be costing them potential customers.

Darla R.

Yelp
The lo mein is hot, delicious. I was served quickly. The shrimp are very large and well cooked.

Yasmin G.

Yelp
All I had where snacks today!! :D it was delicious, it's not too slaty or sweet like it tends to be a little heavy handed and I like that too, but it was different I like it it felt like it was made with love. Thank YOUU
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Wonderful food! And the service is always top-notch! I wish there were more options for protein preparation in their delivery service. Proteins are always delivered fried without an option to request unfried preparation. When I order a dish that features broccoli - if I'm in the restaurant, they serve a reasonable portion of broccoli. If I order for delivery, I only get two florets. Something for the restaurant to consider when it comes to consistency of their brand

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I don't think I have ever had anything bad from here. I drive across town for their soup and Pad Thai. Fast and fresh.
google avatar

Ronney R.

Yelp
Wow. The food is terrible. Ordered red Thai curry chicken & its spicy n sour & tastes off. The guys are yelling in the back. The cashier is really nice young guy. Aside from him this place is GROSS.
google avatar

Christian J.

Yelp
Traditional Chinese fast food. It's tasty and a good location with easy parking and it also has good service but it's very Americanized. It is locally owned but since they have gotten busier over the years it seems like they've added a lot of sugar and salt to all the food. I would make sure to get something that is naturally less sugar and salt. I like general tso's chicken and sesame shrimp but both are just loaded with sugar. The food comes out fast and hot.

Yelp
I've been ordering here since I discovered it in 2014! Chris the manager has always been so sweet and kind remembering my name when I grab my food. My go to is the chicken pad Thai!! I remember being so sick a few years back and when I ordered I asked him if he recommended any dishes to help make me feel better... Chris took the time to ask me how I was feeling and if I had cold symptoms and told me what he would make for me and asked about any allergies and my tolerance to spice.. being open minded I told him I'll eat whatever he makes me. I went home and sipped down a Thai Basil soup that I could feel literally healing me. I remember feeling so warm and full, and thankful I could breathe again! Anyways, I've had only great experiences here! Highly recommend.

Turner P.

Yelp
Not amazing tea tastes old and the food isn't bad but it also didn't even follow the description on the menu. Will i go another time sure. This place is close and prices are not horrible. That being said if they raised there prices even the smallest amount with out elevating the food i would just watch as time forces them to close

Chante M.

Yelp
ZERO STARS. First when I went to pick up my food, they didn't have it ready because "they do not make first time orders that do not pay online." So we had to wait for them to ring in our food and make it. When we got home, we noticed that they forgot part of our order. AND now I was eating my soup and almost swallowed a STAPLE. I cannot believe the experience I have had at this restaurant. If you're debating on ordering food from here, you should think again.
google avatar

Priya N.

Yelp
I haven't been inside but I have ordered online. Last time I ordered here, I bought the basil fried rice and it was pretty good, the flavors were all there and it would be something I would order again. Today I ordered honey glazed chicken with a side of plain fried rice and an egg roll and it was subpar at best. The fried rice didn't even taste fresh, the sauce over the chicken was too overpowering and was nasty. The egg roll was mushy inside and wasn't satisfying to eat. The two pieces of broccoli that they provided was the highlight of the meal. So far I would only recommend the basil fried rice. I am quite frankly disappointed.

Sammy S.

Yelp
Stopped by Bamboo Bistro for takeout. We are vegan and they made sure that each dish ordered was vegan. The food tasted great and was still piping hot when I got home! Thank you for being flexible for those of us who have food requirements!
google avatar

Marci P.

Yelp
Based on the mixed reviews for Bamboo Bistro, I had low expectations, but they did not disappoint! What really impressed me was their customer service. I placed my order through the Grubhub app (sorry Yelp, I had credits!) and someone called to confirm my order and delivery time. Since they are drive-through only, I waited in line for a few minutes for the other cars ahead of me. When I got to the window, the attendant apologized for the wait (which really wasn't that long). He also acknowledged the notes in my order, which I really appreciated (I wanted a non dairy option for my Thai iced tea if they had it, but they don't). I love the level of detail they put into their takeout orders, especially how they beautifully packaged the crab rangoons. I'm not quite sold on the pad Thai but am willing to go back to give their other dishes another try!

Tracy C.

Yelp
Five stars to the young upbeat dude that was working the drive through. Two stars for the Kung Pao chicken - too sweet and not spicy enough and the chicken tasted like it was chicken jerkey rather than regular chicken. They must have either overcooked it, it was old chicken or both...still edible though.

Manuel G.

Yelp
Ordered on the phone arrived 30 min later food was not ready waited 5 min for 3 plates. Fried rice was good and chicken tastes great . Would recommend again . Last time I ordered was pad Thai and it was not as good. I guess some dishes hit and others don't .

Keisha H.

Yelp
I ordered online, and it displayed that the food would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later, but the food wasn't ready, and they told me it would be another 2 minutes. When I finally received my order, everything was burnt and tasted like dish soap. I'm not coming back.

Pritesh P.

Yelp
Food. Found a roach in my food. . This was the worst experience I've had. This happened to me in another country but I'd think they would have more quality control in a first world country.
google avatar

Yelp
We went today for lunch 3 of us lunch specials which includes; choice of soup egg drop, hot and sour, and wonton, fried wonton egg roll, choice of rice fried or steamed and entree all included for under $8. Chicken chop suey is great lots of chicken and vegetables. Sesame chicken was great and spicy shrimp and chicken all was perfect. Service was fast attentive and we never had to ask for anything.

Yelp
Amazing Asian food in Westlake, ATX! Must try the seared tuna for an exceptional experience. Pricey but a fully loaded plate.
google avatar

Jordyn M.

Yelp
We order the combo curry fried rice, combo Cantonese crispy noodle and crab wontons. Wontons were decent but I think the filling and/or sauce could of had more flavor. Definitely have had better and neighboring austin restaurants. The crispy noodle dish was by far the least impressive. Noodles have minimum sauce and not much flavor and sure only as texture but the noodles are so long that it's hard to eat with the protein and sauce provided. even after removing the noodles the flavoring of the protein and veggies was very lack luster. The current fried rice was the best of the three but still lacked a lot of flavoring to it. I feel as if there are better options that will have stronger flavor profiles in the area. I will not be returning here.
google avatar

Amber C.

Yelp
This place is okay. I ordered a salmon salad, chicken lo mein, chicken lo mein from kids menu, and veggie spring rolls. The noodles were the best part from this order. I believe they were udon noodles. The salmon from the salad was questionable. It had a similar consistency to mash potatoes. They didn't honor the complimentary 6 crab rangoon with order of $35 and over. That was a bummer. The person whom we picked up from said they weren't affiliated with Yelp... And then she changed her answer to that being a deal from one of the delivery services. We resquested hot sauce and utensils And got 2 forks for an order with 3 meals... I'll probably never stop by and pick up food here. But if YOU do, I recommend you order from the kids menu. The adult portion is only slightly more and the price difference is significant.

Ramo A.

Yelp
I ordered fried rice with chicken and shrimp, and lo main with beef and shrimp. Both plates were half empty when I got them! I paid 50 dollars for my food and I expect for the containers to be filled! This is ridiculous!
google avatar

Jeeba J.

Yelp
We ordered the pad thai & hot and sour soup. The pad thai was ok, the eggs were burned so it overpowered the taste of the noodles. The hot and sour soup was good & we would order it again.

Michael K.

Yelp
Great food. Lots of flavor at good price. The staff js very friendly as well. Hidden asian restaurant in South Austin making this place a gem.
google avatar

Vicki Y.

Yelp
I REALLY HATE to be negative but I believe it is required this time. Ordered, for pick up, our usual & customary- 2 entrees, egg rolls, Rangoon. None were discribed as being heavy with garlic. I really like garlic! But everything was super heavy in garlic. I couldn't eat but 2 bite of the egg roll & only the crispy corners of the Rangoon. My taste buds were messed up so entree was boxed back up & hope to eat tomorrow. Guess my biggest concern is that we had ordered several times before & enjoyed it. It will be a long time before I go there again. I'll be looking for another restaurant to try. $45 too much to waste on a meal, IMO!

Yelp
We've all been eating at home these past few months but now it's time to help local businesses STAY in business. BB is only open for drive through right now. *there are no prices on the menu (it says ask for prices) I'm assuming it's due to covid-19 and availability for products. I haven't been in months so I went with one of my go to orders: Thai Basil with chicken and brown rice- add a Thai spicy soup for 99 cents. You won't be disappointed. I also grabbed a pad Thai with tofu. Don't judge! I had just finished a workout. Plus I wanted leftovers. ‍ The drive thru ordering was easy. They were wearing a mask. I wish there was a way to pay without them taking my cc and then having to sign. Eek! I carry sanitizer in my car for those moments. Anyway my order wasn't ready so they told me to park and they would bring it out. I could see inside and there were two people (one was the owner) without masks. I don't know if the chefs were wearing masks as I couldn't see in the kitchen. They did bring it out but he wasn't wearing a mask or gloves. He was one of the people I could see from my car without a mask. I don't usually freak out about a mask but your handling my food?!! The food was delicious and it didn't stop me from eating it but as I am writing this...I feel strongly whether you are six feet away from my food or not you should be wearing a mask. Plenty of leftovers!!!
google avatar

Icynthi W.

Yelp
Read reviews that the portions are small. This is my leftovers and I'm stuffed! The portions were large! The food arrived quickly and the staff is very friendly. Delicious!

Yelp
First and last time I will be ordering from this restaurant. Mediocre food and extremely dissatisfactory service. I don't typically leave negative reviews, but this experience really irked me. Patrons beware...this place should be avoided. I placed our order on 9/14 @ 8:50ish. At around 9:50 I decided to check our door being as I hadn't heard a knock at that point and lo and behold...the food was there on our door step. We have a large dog in the same room that barks at the faintest of noises, so you can imagine what a knock will do to the pups alert system. With that said, no one knocked or informed us that our food was there. I guess they expect people to open the door and look outside every 5 minutes for the foods arrival? Maybe I should have pitched a tent on the front porch to alert the delivery driver that we were home and readily available. With this said, I decided that a call was warranted to the restaurant given that our food was luke warm, dry and dissatisfactory after what I expect was a 30+ minute wait on our porch. Surprisingly they still picked up my call at 10:05pm, which was a welcoming start to resolving the situation. The man that picked up (I suspect was the delivery driver) listened to my explanation about being dissatisfied and offered this statement as a resolution to what was now a $52 problem, "I can have the delivery driver knock or call you next time". Like...what? Seriously? In what world, especially the restaurant world, is this an acceptable solution? Isn't knocking common practice when food gets delivered? The hilarious thing about this is they tried to say "Oh, well maybe no one answered". Okay, buddy. Way to gas light your customer. Buyer beware. If you've had good experiences here, consider yourself lucky, but if you have an issue with your order and decide that your hard earned money deserves the service you paid for, DO NOT expect to receive good service or a resolution other than a "better luck next time" response. To the owners: (I hope that I didn't speak to an owner) get your act together.

Yelp
We ordered via UberEats tonight and really enjoyed the food. We ordered the sweet and sour chicken, combo lo mein, and jalapeño crab wontons. All the food was delicious and hot, the wontons were crispy and delicious. That lo mein is up there with the best I've tried and it had tons of meat in there. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
Simply love this place. Great gluten-free options. Fresh veggies in their food. Awesome
google avatar

Michaela P.

Yelp
Delivery through Postmates. Snovid21. Got it. Boil water notice. Got it. But. So. Sloooow...Bistro, not the driver. Got the pad Thai and general tso chicken. Mediocre. The spicy Thai soup was spot on though, and spicy! Okay in a pinch, but there are better.
google avatar

Kira S.

Yelp
I ordered here for the first time 7/7/21 through uber eats and ordered Kung Pao Chicken and the bacon and green beans. It came with very little rice that was soaked with sauce. The chicken had a weird taste and just ate all of the vegetables and left the meat. I wrote in the notes section that I have a peanut allergy (this can be seen in the receipt that was attached to the bag) and was shocked when I noticed a peanut in my green beans dish.

Lori C.

Yelp
I Just moved to the area and was hoping to find some authentic Chinese food that delivers, but this was no where close. I ordered chicken fried rice, it was basically soy sauce soaked rice with chicken, no carrot, onion or egg? The Mongolian beef which is generally sliced beef, green onion and onion in a sweet brown sauce and I've never had it include carrots and broccoli. Seemed no different than beef and broccoli. The egg rolls were something I could buy and fry in the frozen section from H‑E‑B. Sorry for $60 and delivery, The food was sub par and I could have done better at Panda Express and saved some money!
google avatar

Tramaine S.

Yelp
Bought some shrimp tempura and decided to eat in the car. I looked down and saw a beetle next to my shrimp. I almost died and became sick instantly. I took the order back inside and showed the little Asian Manager. He had the audacity to deny that the beetle came from his restaurant after I picked up the food 5 min prior. BUYER BEWARE if you want to avoid getting sick and an angry, rude manager. Seek food elsewhere!
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I hate giving bad reviews, I used to love this place years ago. I moved back to the area and thought I'd give them another try. I ordered to-go via the drive through. I'll never be back and DO NOT recommend this place to anyone. There was a whole COCKROACH in my food. I didn't find it until I was halfway done with the food. So gross!!!
