Where To Eat and Drink in South Waterfront | Eater Portland

"For a taste of Hawai‘i, seek out Bamboo Grove in John’s Landing. This casual spot cooks up classics from the islands like loco moco, Kalua pork, and seared mahi mahi. The restaurant is owned by David Kahoilua who was born and raised on Maui in Lahaina. After the 2023 fires devastated the island, Kahoilua jumped into action and raised over $27,000 to send back home. On most days Bamboo Grove is quite busy, but the outdoor deck is a perfect place to escape the crowd and enjoy the balmy weather in Portland." - Rebecca Roland

12 Hawaiian Restaurants To Try in Portland | Eater Portland

"This restaurant just south of downtown near John’s Landing has all the requisite Hawaiian trappings, but its big family-style combos like the Big Kahuna Platter and Karate King’s Feast make it a hit for at-home luaus. The fun-loving restaurant also serves mainstays like shoyu hot dogs with rice and eggs. Curbside pickup is available or use GrubHub, UberEats, or DoorDash for delivery." - Jenni Moore

Very warm welcoming. Instantly loved the place and their outdoor seating area! Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable on the menu items and helped us decide what to get and suggested the combo plates, so we could try a variety of food. Everything was SO GOOD! 10/10 recommend

Google
Went to the 4 Days of Aloha. We expected overpriced plate lunches but what the heck is this??? They called it a Loco Moco. It looks like something from the prison movies. One Tiny hamburger patty, flavorless brown gravy with few pieces of onions and chopped scrambled eggs, 1 small scoop of rice and a small scoop of mac salad for $18. And $4 for a can of Hawaiian Sun 🤣 I understand you got to make a profit and perhaps food safety prevents you from an over easy egg, but $22 with a can of juice for these? You have got to do better.

Google
My favorite place so far in Portland for Hawaiian food. The large platter is enough food for two people to share. Ate here twice and I enjoyed it, will be back soon. Great service as well.

Wonderful birthday meal that my kids treated me to. Love this place. Highly recommend the Kehei ribs. The leftovers were just as good the next day!

Google
This place reminds me when i was on the big island. Good food. I ordered their kalua pork, Loco moco, and the rib platter. The meat was perfectly seasoned. Mac salad is delicious. $15-$30 per menu item. I do recommend this place and i will be back. Mahalo 🤙

Google
Real good experience, we were looking for something different in Portland. The Hawaiian flair is perfect, I LOVE SPAM. The 1st restaurant I saw SPAM on the menu, along with Portuguese sausage and eggs. Thank you for this island retreat.

Google
On point Hawaiian diner—like straight out of Pearl City (Oahu). We go for the Moco Loco and Saimin (Auntie's size) and a to-go Musubi box and platter-sized Yakisoba (so good the next day). Warm welcome always. Friendly, speedy service. Love the street window booth (cozy when it's chilly) and the patio in warm weather (the only thing missing: a balmy Plumeria breeze😎). Simple Island décor—from surfboards to framed pictures. Visit #: we've lost count

We met here with out of town friends on April 30, 2024; three of us are from Hawaiʻi, so it was the perfect place to meet. The food was wonderful! I had the guava chicken, which was broke da mouth, and my friend had the teriyaki ahi, which she said was perfect and was so happy that all of their shoyu is gluten free. Hubby had the Sweet & Sour Veggie Stir Fry, which he really liked. We were so busy talking that I forget what my other friend had! He pronounced it delicious. The mac salad was fantastic! Our server was outstanding! (I wish I knew his name.) He made sure we were well taken care of, was friendly and helpful, and made us feel extremely welcome. Highest praise to him; he's a real asset to the restaurant. We were there for two hours, and had so much to catch up on, but our server never rushed us. He took photos for us at our request, and did a great job with that, too. If I could give more than five stars, I would. Everything about our time there was terrific!

Yelp
A haiku review: Been here three times now Each time is always so good The mac is delish I've tried many meats The ribs never disappoint Love the shoyu too

Yelp
I gave them another chance; the food was good as always and this time service was excellent. I can only guess I got them near the end of the night/close to closing, and things fell apart. The food and value are worth going, or else I wouldn't have tried again. Recommend trying the Kalbi- delicious.

Yelp
My wife and I were invited to Bamboo Grove to celebrate a friend's birthday party last Saturday night, and despite Hawaiian cuisine being among my least favorites, I thoroughly enjoyed the Chop Steak I ordered, subbing out the ubiquitous macaroni side for a bleu cheese salad instead. In fact, I would go as far as to say the Chop Steak was the best Hawaiian dish I've had at any such establishment. I would absolutely order it again! My wife opted for the kalua pork, with some musubi to start that, unfortunately, kept falling apart in our hands, despite our best attempts to keep them together. Still tasty, but a little hard to handle and keep intact. Between the two of us, we also enjoyed the Hawaiian Iced Tea and a Black Tai to wash everything down. Service was prompt and attentive, which is impressive considering it was just one woman (one of the owners, I believe) holding down our massive table of ~12, plus all the other tables in the back room with us. Orders arrived promptly, accurately, and most important: deliciously, and without incident, for every member of our large party, which is far less common than it should be. And no one seemed to mind when our curious, adventurous toddler began wandering around, exploring the entire restaurant, smiling and babbling away! Interior aesthetic is charming: they've certainly made an effort to give it that Big Island feel, which is a nice touch. All in all, we were quite impressed with everything Bamboo Grove had to offer, and I could easily see us returning in the future, the next time my wife and I feel the need to reminisce about our time in Hawaii, since this is about as close as you can get to enjoying the cuisine of the 50th state without actually boarding a flight!

Yelp
Service was amazing the staff was very attentive and friendly. The seating outside was great, which gave us pleasant gusts of wind so often. I had the Korean Style Ribs and Kalua Pig Combo and it was delicious! I wish I had room for more.
google avatar

Lexie S.

Yelp
Yum! The Korean chicken was SO good. We wanted to order more even though we were stuffed. The Kalua pork was salty and juicy. We ordered the down musubi which had a bit too much rice. Besides that small issue, everything was great. The service was good and the food came out quickly! They have indoor, outdoor and seating kinda of in between. People are sleeping on this spot!

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place for awhile, as we are local. Cozy on the inside, but not a lot of natural light, and the space inside is broken up into weird semi- rooms.. There's a small outside patio. Ambiance definitely leans rustic -- cafeteria meets island vibes (barely) with basic furniture and silverware. Our order came out fairly quickly, and portions were pretty decent sized. I will say our meal was good but not eye-opening great - my wife's salad with Shoyu chicken was the highlight. My seared ahi was a nice size, with good texture but not very flavorful. And the included rice and macaroni salad were nothing to write home about - fairly dry and bland. I will say the service here is great and they have a decent - if small - tap list, and can do some limited cocktails. Overall OK experience but not amazing. Better off ordering to go.

Yelp
I've come here a few times and food is always delicious! Love the short ribs. Cute lil atmosphere. Strong mixed drinks! Definitely worth stopping by.

Michael W.

Yelp
Everything is Amazing!!!. Yummy portions are Good Sized. Most everything is homemade.

Mike J.

Yelp
If you don't tip they enough put stuff in your food! That is damaging to your testicular track
google avatar

Angie M.

Yelp
Tasty, filling food. In the past the side salad has been mundane, dry, and unappetizing, but that was several years ago.
google avatar

Y.N N.

Yelp
Really nice staff and service. The dishes were okay, nothing surprising, it was pretty expensive. Cool spot in the summer to hangout with friends, they have nice outdoor seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, huge portions and well priced. Two adults can share a large portion. It's a lot of food! Tastes just like what I remember ordering while in Hawaii. Very clean restaurant. Would highly recommend. Would highly recommend and would visit if we are in the area again.

Yelp
I'd been curious about trying this place out for a while and decided to get food via delivery. My fear was the shoyu chicken would be too salty, and the tofu vegetable stir fry would be too sweet. Interestingly, some mix of opposites were the reality. I thought the Mac salad and the tofu vegetable stir fry had actually good flavor. The tofu and vegetables were fresh, and the Mac salad had well-cooked noodles but was a bit sweeter than I prefer. The shoyu chicken was so very sweet and also dry without much other flavor. Not sure if the food is better in-person, but I don't think I'll get delivery again.
google avatar

Theresa A.

Yelp
We had a party of 4, ordered a bunch of diff meats and allll of it was amazing! The Mac salad was so good we ordered a side to go. The service was attentive. The cocktails had a bright tropical presentation, but they were okay. I would go back, not for the drinks.

Yelp
Wonderful Hawaiian food that truly is a comfort food. If you're looking for a good time to talk with your friends and have some good food, GO HERE!
google avatar

Lily S.

Yelp
The sign says wait to be seated but they told us to seat ourselves (which is oky cause I like picking a spot to eat), I would recommend taking a photo of the menu on the wall or looking at it for a while as when the water came out we didn't get a menu. I personally find that the mac salad I got with the sandwich didnt have much flavor, but the sandwich I got was so tasty. The spam musubi was to much rice (what my friend was saying) but she still enjoyed it. I think next time I would eat outside though as the wall we were sitting against (picked booth seating) had some very small fruit flies on it (dead) but other than that the place was very beautiful. I don't think I would stop here again unless I was in the area.

Yelp
I know it's not much left but! Amazingly delicious!!!!!!! I usually order the Teriyaki Chicken from here, amazing dish as well but this! Omg. I'm never able to finish plates from here but this one. I CANNOT STOP EATING!!! Highly recommend! So delicious and tasty! Thank you B.G!
google avatar

Marc W.

Yelp
Moldy. Yeah the bun on the mahi-mahi sandwich had a huge spot of mold on it. What else in our older was past its prime? Ate the mahi mahi - a little fishy and bland. Lumpia was pretty good, Mac was too. Chicken was stringy but alright. When I called to inform them about the mold (mind you I can care less about a refund, just want to tell them to be careful) it was "did we serve you that?" And call Grubhub for a refund. What I should have heard was "I'll talk to the kitchen and I am so sorry." All I needed.

Yelp
Love this place so much... went for lunch AND dinner. I will not go to Portland without stopping by this joint. The only good thing about Portland is this place! Keep up the good work folks...

Joshua T.

Yelp
Such a great spot! My favorite Hawaiian spot in portland for years! Classic food and ambience, not trying to be something they're not like other Hawaiian places in the area. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
We haven't been here in a few years and it was time to get what we remembered being pretty good Hawaiian food. I called in the order for pick up and it was ready on time. Brought it home and immediately did some taste testing. I ordered the poke (ginger), seared mahi mahi and the combo with kalua pig and teriyaki chicken. The combo was good. Both the pork and chicken were done very well and as I remembered. The poke was also good and a descent portion. The poke had slices of yellow onion over the top. Didn't make sense and overpowered the fish if eaten together. The mahi mahi was overdone- we would not try that again. The staff were friendly and courteous. We'll be back but definitely wouldn't take a chance on the fish again and there's no urgency as the food was good but not spectacular
google avatar

Yelp
Food is delicious, but the customer service is not that great. Very good food to order Togo, but if you like good service go somewhere else ‍
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Da grinds here are OG. Flavor is on point. And the portions are big. Large is large for sure! Chill vibes and they have a bar! POG with Rum!? Yes please! They even have their POG on tap! Teriyaki beef and beef short ribs were the winners oh and the Kalua pork was good to. I can imagine it's epic when it's fresh. Ours was a touch dry but flavor central! Kids burger was plain Jane. Service was great! We had a big party of 8 and they set up a table for us in the back. This place is pretty big too. Looks tiny from the outside

Yelp
Ordered catering for 30 people for my corporate office. Food was enjoyed by everyone. Their timing showing up was perfect. My only criticism was that I couldn't pay until the day of the event and this seemed like a chaotic business practice and was rather stressful for me. I try to get everything taken care of before an event so I can just deal with event stuff on that day. I don't want to have to go back and pay for something I ordered a month prior. But other than that, I would order again.
google avatar

Mira M.

Yelp
Worst experience ever. I paid for a $44 meal with a $9.50 tip and was charged a $95 tip. I was told that I was refunded the whole transaction and was sent a picture of a voided receipt, but the receipt only listed the $44 meal. Susan made me re-pay for the $44 meal, and had the audacity to ask if I wanted to leave another tip. When it processed, I was only refunded for the meal, not the $95 tip. Susan told me it wasn't their problem and that I would need to contact the bank for the rest of the refund. I had to file a dispute that is still processing, it has been weeks now and I'm still out $95. I also got the rib sampler and it wasn't very good.

Joe S.

Yelp
Grabbed takeout from Bamboo a few times. Have mostly had the chicken teriyaki and rice, last time had a wonderful combo platter which included Kalua pig - super good. Everyon is always friendly on the phone and in person. We haven't eaten in the restaurant yet, but always see people in there having a good time. I like to get a little extra sauce on the side!
google avatar

Terrance S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots in Portland. I always enjoy the teriyaki steak and the shoyu chicken as well. Mac salad is a bonafied winner and the passion tea is a great go to. The patio is great in all seasons as they have heaters to make it even more comfortable. This is my favorite spot for Hawaiian in Portland. No knock on anyone else, but there are a few others I need to try. Great assortment of adult beverages as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here because was craving Hawaiian. Overall disappointed. Service was fine. Walked in, and the ladies working the register were really nice, handed me my order, and rung me up. The food wasn't so great. The spam musubi was...the spam didn't look pan fried at all; it was pale and looked like it was barely heated. (Note: It should be browned.) The nori was coming apart, and the rice was hard--it was like overnight rice. There was no sauce at all. I also ordered the rib sampler, and most of the meat was pretty dry. I love love Hawaiian food and was looking forward to finding a go-to place for loco mocos, etc., but unfortunately, this wasn't it. The spam musubi attempt made me so sad.
google avatar

Lindsay F.

Yelp
I ordered a combination platter with shoyu chicken and the kalua pork. Both meats were cooked well but the shoyu chicken was so sweet. The juices from it mixed with the rice, macaroni salad, and the kalua pork, so everything tasted sweet, unfortunately. The other items on their own (not mixed with the sweetness) were really good. The spam musubi was very good!
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
This is one of our "go to" restaurants. We love the food. My husband always get the Loco Moco and adds spam. He loves it. I love the beef teriyaki and kahlua pig. Their Mac salad is so good. I highly recommend this restaurant!!!
google avatar

Christy K.

Yelp
We pick up to go food about once a week from Bamboo Grove. We always order the shoyu chicken. It's a large portion of amazing sweetness. They do a great job of making sure you don't get any fatty grisly pieces, which I love. They have great outdoor seating and welcome dogs! We've used the space many times with our yorkie in tow. When it's cold, they'll turn on the outdoor heaters for you. They also have indoor seating, and open the garage style door when it's warm. Staff is always nice and helpful. Cute restaurant.. one of our favorites. .
google avatar

Prima B.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place so we came here for the first time. We love the vibe and ambience of this place. Our server was friendly, nice, attentive and prompt. He was helpful and accommodating. Serving size was huge. It can be shared. The meal was flavorful and the sauces made the food more enjoyable. Definitely coming back. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
I can't get enough of their shoyu chicken. It's like the best thing ever; I'm obsessed with it. The Caesar salad is surprisingly amazing. The ribs are delicious (both the Kihea and the Korean). The teriyaki beef is also awesome. They use all GF soy sauce and the only gluten items are easy to avoid (Mac salad, salad croutons). Right now you order at the counter and then take a seat and they bring you the food (this is a post-Covid change). They do have outdoor seating too. We ate there tonight and Rachel was amazing. She went out of her way to make it right when I mentioned a mistake that was made and really went above and beyond. She was so understanding and sweet. Always happy to support this local business with great food! The large platters are more than enough food for two (or more!) people (and we always have leftovers) making it really reasonable priced too. We like to get the combo platter so we can get two different meats.
google avatar

Angie H.

Yelp
I haven't been to Bamboo Grove in probably 15 years so it was high time to make a visit. We came on a Saturday for lunch. You order at the counter and are given a number to take back to your table, the menu is extensive with tons of delicious options. They have lots of beverage choices, including tropical flavored margaritas, we had guava pineapple and they were super tasty. Then we had the rib sampler, which came with three different flavors of short ribs, the poke sampler (excellent, but a smaller portion than I expected) and loco moco. We loved it all! Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere.
google avatar

Brett P.

Yelp
I stopped by Bamboo Grove at my brother's recommendation. Every time he is in town, he comes here, so I figured it had to be solid. And guess what, it is. They have killer Hawaiian cuisine dat breaks da mouth and indoor and outdoor (with heating) seats. I recommend going with the combo as this gives you a few options. All-in-all, 5 stars! Give this place a go if you are jonesing for a little Hawaii 5-0.
google avatar

Bonnie S.

Yelp
Love this place. Friendly staff, authentic Hawaiian style eats (grew up in Honolulu, return frequently). Especially enjoy musubi and guava chicken. Portions huge.
google avatar

Cynthia X.

Yelp
This is a cute place with more seating than you'd expect. The staff is friendly. The food came out pretty quickly. My kalua pig was flavorful but was mostly big fatty pieces. The poke was over powered by the excessive amounts of white onion. Their carbonation machine was down so they could not serve soda.

Gennie K.

Yelp
Love this place! Been going for years. Always order the grilled chicken with rice and Mac salad.
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
Selling two spam musubis for 8.40 and the spam was cut like the size of paper. Don't buy Hawaiian food from this place. No true Hawaiian restaurant would cut you short like that. Auwe. No shame.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
My new favourite place. Comfort food at its finest. I love the combo plate because it reminds me of going to a good bbq or a family gathering and mixing a bunch of yummy food together on a paper plate. Their kalua pork is great, korean chicken is great, macaroni salad is perfect. I love it here.

Emma C.

Yelp
I'm 20 years old and my family has come here for all my life. Best hawaiian food in town and exceptional vibes. Will literally cure all of your problems. Get the POG to drink too. Susan is my favorite waitress ever. Bury me with Bamboo Grove mac salad. This place just doesn't miss.

Chris H.

Yelp
Delicious, authentic Hawaiian food and friendly and welcoming staff. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Viv A.

Yelp
Food was awful the rice was very old I don't recommend this place the macaroni salad was not good at all nor was the chicken good at all

Sarah E.

Yelp
Great Hawaiian food and cocktails! I tried the Guava BBQ chicken bowl. Still thinking about their macaroni salad
google avatar

Nicolette S.

Yelp
My fav Hawaiian in PDX and prob yours too unless you're scouting this to try for the first time - in which case 99% chance it'll be your new fav Hawaiian in PDX too. Kind of a hole in the wall type restaurant on a very unassuming street - like don't blink you might miss it kind of joint. But you know, that's how you know it's good. I've been ordering out a bit from them during quarantine and they are always top notch and consistently delicious. After trying a lot of things on the menu (which I enjoyed all of it) I have a new steady go-to - Korean chicken. I get the medium & it comes with rice & Mac salad. It's a bit spendy, but don't fret because this easily gives me a lunch for the next day so totally worth it. Their Mac sal is top tier & they don't give you a ton of it so if you are into a good Mac sal, maybe go crazy and get a side of it as well! That's what I do anyways.

Makiah J.

Yelp
Celiac safe gluten free Hawaiian food! Flavors are incredible. I've been going here for 10 years. I think the Guava BBQ teriyaki chicken is my new favorite!
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
A quaint place in Portland where you can get authentic Hawaiian food. The food here is just delicious. The food is perfectly marinated and cooked. Guaranteed flavor pops in your mouth when you eat here. The servings are large and fair.
google avatar

Wayne C.

Yelp
I bet it has been 10 years since we were at the Bamboo Grove. Even though it's just right down the block. Honestly, I can't say for certain why we let 10 years lapse between visits? However, in trying to support as many local businesses as we can, we decided for takeout. And now, I wonder why we waited 10 years to go back. The food is really tasty. Not to mention the fact that they give you Fred Flintstone style portions. The shoyu chicken is almost so good that I think I could eat a large plate on my own. Not that my belly would appreciate me afterwards. Honestly, this place is really rocking it. And now during the pandemic, when there is just so and much that makes small businesses really fragile, they are rocking the take-out food experience. We will be back. We'll continue to support all the small businesses in our neighborhood. They need us!
google avatar

Craig C.

Yelp
Born and raised in Hawaii (just like the owner of this place) so I know a little bit about local hawaii food. This place is legit! For all you Hawaii transplants living in pnw go visit this place. Food is ono!
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
If I was a first time customer, I would have given it 2 stars. But, we come here every once in awhile because the food is generally pretty good. Lately, meats seem quite burnt. Today was the worst...
