The 13 Best Tiki Bars in the Bay Area | Eater SF

"With DJs bumping music on weekends and big groups getting trashed off volcano bowls, Bamboo Hut is as much a dance and party bar as a Tiki one. But bonkers details like a talking stone head on the wall (that will could give you a heart attack when it leaps to life) make it a worthy destination for a night on the town." - Caleb Pershan

Google
3 stars for only having beer available when I visited. Also it was about 10:30pm and “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. comes on and I look up and it’s just me, my beer and the bartender. Nothing particularly wrong with any of those it’s just not the tiki bar vibe I thought this place was supposed to have.

Océana Gandhi

Google
Super cute themed bar in SF, the vibe is amazing, the cocktails are incredible, the staff is super nice and friendly, I really recommend this little gem in SF.

Jocelyn Hernandez

Google
Best green tea shots I’ve had in my entire life! Shout out to their bartenders. Well balanced drinks - flavor and all! 🤌🏼 Ambience: think chill vibes + neon lights

Jeff Hug

Google
Great knowledgeable staff! Good tasting drinks. The decor feels a little more New Orleans rush street bar than tiki, but once inside the dive bar kicks in and you’re there for a good time.

A.C. Antonelli

Google
Bamboo Hut serves up colorful tropical cocktails in a colorful tropical atmosphere, and maybe I’m just a sucker for bright lights, good music, and boozy banana-based concoctions in a glass with parasol-shaded little plastic monkeys lining the rim but… I find it pretty easy to have a good time here, and I’m guessing you will too.

Google
Nice decoration inside and good location; but really unprofessional management. I got hit by the weirdly located stuff/storage room door which is right next to men's bathroom (I guess by mistake), and while talking to the employee who hit me with the door, the manager arrives and shove me to a side and hit me again with the door. Now this time instead of simply apologizing, the manager escalate it to a whole lot dramatic level. I chose to leave the bar without using the bathroom and without finishing my drink; but I just wanted to let others know that if something happens, they won't treat you with respect or dignity. Here are some pictures as a proof that I was there and wasted some time in that bar.

Google
a lot of tropical cocktails for every taste. very tropical vibe inside, the only thing missing is tropical style seating and tables. most cocktails are made with pineapple and coconut. one of the minuses was a boring DJ who played terrible, boring music

Jocie Johnson

Google
The atmosphere and bar itself was so much fun, the bar staff was incredibly friendly and kind. However, we paid for a private party and the DJ refused to take requests. I understand it is under his discretion to play what he wants, but he refused to play the songs the private party requested. I personally asked him to play a song and he told me he would, I never heard the song so I went back to him to ask about it playing and he told me it was going to be played soon. I never heard the song and when I asked him one more time, he said it’s no longer within your parties time frame and I can play whatever I want. I said that’s disappointing because I asked him to play the song during our private party event at this bar and he told me that’s not longer his problem and he was extremely rude. Very disappointing because this bar and the rest of the staff were amazing, but this DJ was rude and a real let down. Especially for how much money we spent for this bar for a birthday party. Do not suggest the bar hires this DJ again based on how he talked to customers.

Yelp
Walked in around 1am on a Friday and was pretty lively. There is a DJ in the corner playing trendy tunes with a small floor space for dancing. There's a couple booths and a bunch of seating at the bar tops. I received quick service; there were 2 bartenders and got my drink within a couple of minutes after ordering. The drink I got was super refreshing and tropical! The only con was the booths were left unattended to. There were empty cups and dishes from the previous table that were left around. Overall love the tiki vibes, great for a drinks and fun time!

Yelp
Ambiance is nice, but theres no way the volcano bowls are enough alcohol for more than 1 person. If you wanna order it for the novelty + share go ahead but definitely get a personal drink too. Not sure if they were supposed to add more alcohol since it said its supposed to include a floated shot but it tastes bland and our bartender only poured slushy in the bowl.

Yelp
Bamboo hut is a fun experience it's like walking into an episode of SpongeBob in the best way. The decorations were a vibe (especially the puffer fish). My friends and I got the slushy fish bowls and had a blast drinking from the bendy straws and watching the volcano eruption the bartender creates.

Jenny B.

Yelp
It's always a great time at the Bamboo Hut - chill / fun tiki hut vibes, super friendly service, creative drinks and great DJs. They also have slushies and lit volcano bowls if you have a flair for the dramatic, and IMO the best Mai Tais in town- basically low key fun vibes all around!

Yelp
Came here around 10pm on Saturday night. It was a very cool vibe! The decor was so vibrant and the DJ was really good. His set was really fun that I wish the place had a dance area. There are lots of seating areas and standing tables. This place is great for groups wanting a chill vibe. We got the regular volcano bowl and chose to mix the strawberry daiquiri and pina colada. It was $45 for the regular and $60 for the large. The presentation was so fun with the fire and cinnamon sparks. The drink was really tasty. My group of 4 wished we got the large. I also tried the bars take on an espresso martini but I forgot the name they had called it. It was really good! Strong and creamy.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Friday night, and really enjoyed the atmosphere at Bamboo Hut... the colors, lighting, and decor were festive and inviting. Everyone we interacted with was awesome, from the guy checking our ID's at the door to the bartenders serving our drinks, they were all so friendly and seemed to be very approachable. I loved the strawberry kiwi cooler, which came in a cute pineapple-shaped glass with a little umbrella on top. The drink itself was yummy, exactly what I would expect at a tiki bar, and a great way to end an awesome night. We stayed until closing time (which was 1am), and the employees didn't rush us out or make us feel uncomfortable in having to finish up and leave. Cool spot :)

Yelp
This bar has cool decor and a good ambiance. The bartenders are cool. Drinks are good too. It's a good place to stop by if you're nearby but I don't think it's worth it if you're out of the way.

Yelp
Discovered this place after the line for Monroe was too long. My friends, and I had a great time. They gave me a free birthday shot, and we got their volcano ube slushie it was more than enough for 5 people. It was delicious! The music here is also really good and the bartenders are so nice.

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday around 6 with my friend and we were the only ones at the bar with only one bartender. They have daily happy hour which was $3 off cocktails. The inside was very cute and had tiki bar vibes. I had the sex on the peach and my friend had the beach please. We both enjoyed our drinks which were $12 each with the HH discount. Surprised it was empty on a Saturday but I'm sure it can get crowded later in the night.
google avatar

Yenni H.

Yelp
This review is for the DJ who played on Friday 6/9, you truly made my night. I know usually DJs do not take song requests at all. The fact that he played a few that my friends and I requested made it the highlight of my night, he was such a sweet man, he even came back to my friend and asked what was the song she asked to be played. The rest of the night was fun! The drinks are really cool, they got some volcano bowls and it even has flames! They also got some specialty drinks. If the line is too long next door, make sure to come here!
google avatar

Tiffany B.

Yelp
Great bar and service. Yummy tropical drinks and a great semi-private area in the back.
google avatar

Yelp
I had so much fun a bamboo hut on Friday night! It's a tiki themed bar with lively music and drinks. It was pretty crowded and lively but luckily there wasn't a line to get in, and we were able to get drinks pretty fast. The spot had a great energy, and a bar that I definitely want to check out again!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice chill bar that turns into a club around 9 Drink was perfect not too strong or sweet The ambiance was chill, they even have a private area for parties Only one bartender though so please be patient

Yelp
Bamboo Hut is the perfect destination for a night out with friends or a romantic date. With Daniel as the main bartender and Sean as the door guy, patrons are ensured a fantastic experience from start to finish. Drey is another talented bartender, contributing to the venue's exceptional drink menu. The high-energy atmosphere and top-notch staff make Bamboo Hut the ideal place to dance the night away and enjoy delicious drinks. Don't miss out on the party of a lifetime at Bamboo Hut. Don't forget if you are with friends to try one of the Bay Area's most popular drinks, the scorpion bowl, one of the main places to have a genuine one. Disclaimer: No dogs were harmed, given alcohol or any non-dog-friendly food during our visit. Only water and dog-approved food were provided to ensure the well-being and comfort of all furry guests.

Yelp
Cute little tucked away bar in SF. Tiki vibes inside, and you can get a flaming volcano drink. We had the Ube Painkiller which was really unique and super yummy. The bartender was super friendly and really helped us enjoy our experience.

Yelp
Bamboo Hut is a fun place if you enjoy tiki bars or just a change of pace. i had the Tropic Thunder, which included Buffalo Trace bourbon and was perfectly made!

Yelp
As I approached the scene to obtain an umbrella style beverage with appropriate substances to run through my veins to alleviate the capillaries around my nostrils that have been violated by the urine basin of this Basin Area full of bodily fluid excrement. The kind bartender was able to adhere to my private dancer request. as the words were realized from my toungue, a hot & sexy well groomed female at the stool perched up to the barrister of the bar turned in reluctant seduction to ponder upon my request since it confused her. The diligent at work bartender then reminded the vexed but curious patron that she does not need to answer to the call of a dance to entice my loins but rather have the drink in the euphemism formed name to quench my lusting thirst before I move on to Crazy Horse.
google avatar

Robinne D.

Yelp
We came here on Friday, April 7th. Bartender was extremely rude and harassed our group to buy drinks before using the restroom. We had just traveled from across the city and it was an emergency. We were obviously going to buy drinks -- we were celebrating a friend's birthday. He threatened one of our friends that he'd "hunt [her] ass down" if she does not buy a drink. In what world is it ok to say that? Max, I see you are the business owner of this establishment. Please consider giving your employees additional training on customer service. Your bartender that night was completely out of pocket and is poorly representing your business.
google avatar

Jasmine K.

Yelp
The bartender Daniel is awesome, I stopped in with my friends on Saturday & he was so nice & made our time there so fun!
google avatar

Too Much S.

Yelp
The bartender was friendly, so I'm sorry if this review will sound mean, but a few rando tiki masks nailed to the wall and a big light-up foam (I assume) tiki is all that separates this from generic dive bar.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
One of the better tiki bars in SF. We had a great time hanging in one of the booths with friends enjoying a nice volcano bowl. Pretty lit for a Friday night with the DJ playing all the throwbacks and top 40 songs you want. Will def come back and check out more of the cocktails next time in the area.
google avatar

Virhel B.

Yelp
It was dead when we came in on a Wednesday around 9pm. There were 2 couples and one guy in there before our group of 4 came in. One less start for not having food and it being stuffy inside. Had there been food, we would have stayed and cranked more because the drinks were so amazingly good! But we were hungry and though the bar tender was cool about it and said we could bring in food from around the corner we didn't take up on the offer as we wanted to explore. Drinks we had: Pretty Fly for a Mai Tai - good and strong not as sweet as I was hoping for but got the buzz going; Blue Oaxacan-this was delicious the creamy pineapple made this; Strawberry Kiwi Cooler- another good one very refreshing and was sweet but not too much couldn't taste the kiwi though; Quarantine Painkiller- this was my favorite out of the rest it was like a pina colada but more amazing!
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere and really cool bartenders. One of the last/only places in SF to get a proper volcano bowl.
google avatar

Wendy N.

Yelp
So glad we happened to squeeze in a drink here before a comedy show down the block. We were greeted at the bar and so clueless, so happy a manager - Daniel - and bartender helped guide us. The ambience is as the name implies, as is the drink menu. There is bar seating and also booths and tables - a group came in and was seated at a big booth while we were there, seemed organized and comfortable for them. Had a delicious mai tai - which I normally wouldn't order, I'm more of a straightforward drinker rather than mixed, but it was perfect. Later on, we noticed good some good sounds coming out of the Hut as we passed by after our show. We weren't staying out, but they seemed to have a DJ everyone enjoyed.

Yelp
Solid peach cocktail, at a fairly low price during happy hour. Overall good atmosphere and decent prices!

Yelp
Casual tiki bar in North Beach. I came on a Saturday night around 7:30 pm with a group of 6. The bar is small; it looks bigger than it is due to mirrors on all sides. It was crowded but we could still make our way through it, though I can see this place getting even more crowded later. Surprisingly there was a booth open at the end, so we snagged it. Most of the tiki cocktails are $12, but we shared the lava bowl ($35), which is recommended for 4 people. It's a strong drink but still manages to taste deliciously fruity at the same time. Right up my alley! The music was popping. Top 40s and 90s hits had me jamming in my seat the entire time. As far as seating goes, there's bar seating as well as booths, which can seat 6 comfortably, 7 if you squeeze. There's also a back room that could probably fit at least 12. It was empty when we went, but seems like a fun spot for a group to hang out. There's also happy hour Tuesday to Friday 5-8 pm, where you can get $5 beers and well drinks as well as $10 tiki drinks. I'd love to come back for that!

Yelp
Pretty solid Tiki bar in the SF area. Haven't been back in this area for many years and a coworker told me about this place and I had to check it out. Kind of a low key night as I stopped my earlier to have a drink before a show. Atmosphere seemed pretty chill and low key and they had a DJ booth as well so I imagine this place gets goin later on during the night. I would recommend anyone that's in this area to stop by and have a drink. The bartenders are pretty attentive and cool too!!!
google avatar

Brittney D.

Yelp
Very cute tiki bar, we only got the two volcano bowls: ube and pina colada. They do light it up and the volcano "explodes" and it's entertaining for everyone lol. Both tasted great, even the ube which surprised me. They're also both pretty sweet, which might not be everyone's favorite. Free birthday shots for my friend too (:
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
BEST TIKI BAR IN SF! Literally all the drinks are DELICIOUS and always consistent. The bartenders are always nice as well!!! Definitely consider coming here if you're looking for good fruity drinks, good music and good vibes.
google avatar

Edi S.

Yelp
Good vibe, good music and descent drinks. Our bartender, who was stationed closer to the bathrooms, didn't seem very friendly. It felt like he didn't care to give that extra touch to make us feel welcomed. There are other better venues in SFO such as Pagan Idol etc.

Drea C.

Yelp
The decor inside is so cute ! it's a small space but cool , they also have a DJ inside

Jenny T.

Yelp
Best tiki bar ever! I went on a Saturday night they had live DJ. Bartenders are super friendly, they gave me singles to go to the strip club nearby. Drinks are modestly priced and strong af. I would definitely come back. 11/10 experience

Nichole A.

Yelp
Great spot for a date night. Drinks are pricey but good, ambiance is medium noise volume so definitely not a romantic spot but something fun and hip. Decor is great and you really forget where you are in the city. Great for groups or to add to your bar crawl list.
google avatar

Yelp
I've gone to other bars on this street so many times but somehow noticed Bamboo Hut due to its unassuming outside decor. Finally had the chance to visit last weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised! I love tiki bars, and Bamboo Hut had a sufficiently tiki vibe without crossing into divey territory. The space is very narrow and long so it's a little hard to navigate when it's busy. There's a decent amount of bar seating, 3 big booths that can fit around 6 people, and then a bigger bench seating space in the back that could probably easily fit 15 people. It surprisingly wasn't that hot--I was wearing a knitted sweater and given the small space I was expecting to overheat really quickly but I felt comfortably cozy throughout the night. The music they were playing was pretty fun to dance to, lots of "oldies" music like Gwen Stefani and Backstreet Boys which was a pretty refreshing change from the hip hop that I'm more accustomed to hearing at bars these days! I also really really enjoyed their drinks--if you're with a group, MAKE SURE to get a Volcano Bowl to share. That stuff's delicious. It's served in a massive bowl, and the bartenders first pour some alcohol in, light the alcohol on fire, and then toss in some alcoholic pineapple slushy. So good. I wanted 10 more. I also followed up the Volcano Bowl with a Sex on the Beach and loved it! So fruity and sweet and light, and it was served in a cute pineapple-shaped glass. Highly recommend if you're like me and and want your cocktails to taste like juice with fun aftereffects. My friends got a Mai Tai and an Old Cuban, which were pretty good but in my opinion didn't top my Sex on the Beach. Cocktail prices were pretty standard, at around $12 per drink. Overall, awesome find and will be returning for the great drinks.

Leona F.

Yelp
Ambiance and drinks were superb! Bartenders made sure to check in with everyone and provided stellar service. Wish it was a bit more spacious but otherwise a nice place to grab drinks and get a groove on!
google avatar

Lei H.

Yelp
It's not upscale but it's so welcoming. It's divey tiki bar with bras hanging above the bar. Killer volcano drinks and great dj music weekend nights. You don't have to dress up and people don't care what you wear or do here. Just have fun and enjoy the vibe. I have been coming here for several years and always bring different friends. Cover is at most$5 and only after 10pm on weekends. It's one of our go to places as a local for good strong drinks and fun atmosphere.

Megan M.

Yelp
Love the bamboo hut, they have live Djs on weekends so the vibe is always fun and energetic! You get lots of people dancing while drinking yummy well balanced tiki drinks. Honesty I don't think any other tiki bar in the city has a dance floor and most dance venues don't offer unique drinks for those who don't just want shots and vodka sodas. The Bamboo Hut definitely offers the best of both worlds!! Oh and the music volume is also not deafening like most clubs so you can actually have conversations that don't require shouting into each other's ears and blowing out ear drums.
google avatar

Alyssa A.

Yelp
This place is a tiki bar and does a really great job of being on theme. They have cute little straw huts and blowfish hanging from the ceiling. Expect to spend $12 for cocktails (which for SF honestly isn't bad). We got the volcano bowl which was delicious!! They have a few TV's so we were actually able to watch the game. Later at night I could see this as a fun going out place as they were playing some good tunes. The only downside is it was a bit crowded so a little tough to navigate to the bar but we were able to make due.
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
I remember the good old days when sand filled the floors of this tiki bar on Broadway. So many good memories of post-work happy hours over flaming volcano bowls but it's still just as fun today. The sand is now long gone but the good time remain. Pick a tiki drink from a pretty wide list. It's kitschy but a fun vibe. Get there early to get space in the cozy back area for larger groups. Spirited bartenders round out the experience. SF probably has the most tiki bars that I've ever seen in one city but Bamboo Hut is also like a neighborhood bar - albeit with lots of colorful tropical flair.
google avatar

Antonio D. M.

Yelp
Dropped into the Bamboo Hut with some friends and fam. Doing a little day bar hopping. Festive, well decorated place that transports you to a tropical island tiki bar. Lots of drink specials, fun environment and great music. They were bumping lots Prince due to his recent passing and everyone had a great time. I'd go back and try some of their signature drinks at a later time when more party peeps are there. The strawberry volcano!!!
google avatar

Niina G.

Yelp
Awesome tiki atmosphere with great varieties of tropical drinks. What more do you need!
google avatar

Frisco T.

Yelp
It's OPEN AGAIN!!! (Reopening 9/13) Great fun casual tiki bar. Decent drink prices, friendly staff. Yes, they have been closed for a year but they've done a great renovation and haven't lost the originality that it once was.
google avatar

Nicholas J.

Yelp
I had never been to the original bar that existed in Bamboo Hut, but from what I have seen and read, the new owners have really done this North Beach staple a solid. We popped into Bamboo for a pre-dinner drink and were greeted by a wonderful bartender whose name escapes me now, but she delivered two solid martinis for us. It might be a faux-pas to pass on some of their awesome tiki drinks for the first time, but a classic martini is a quick way to gauge the expertise of your drink maker...and they pass for sure! For a cheaper tiki experience than Pagan Idol or The Tonga Room, Bamboo Hut should be your go-to.

Paulina G.

Yelp
Best tiki bar in SF. It's not pretentious or full of techies. The cocktails are super yummy and prices are fair. Definitely prefer this place than all the other tiki bars in sf.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Came in with a group of coworkers around 6:30 pm on a Thursday - lots of people at the bar already, but plenty of room in the booths! Since I was hanging with a bunch of "work hard, drink harder" developers, I didn't really get a choice beyond the Volcano Bowls ($20 reg., $15 during happy hour) - I tried both the Strawberry *and* the Pineapple bowl, and I'll let you guess which one tastes like a delicious, sugar-filled Slurpee and which one tastes like a night of regrets (I ruined pineapple juice for myself sometime back in 2008). The bowls are to be shared by 3-4 people, and even then, are pretty alcoholic. This is not a good option for someone who likes to sit back with a glass of wine or quietly nurse a beer. This is a race to the finish. If you manage to drink the flaming 151 in the center, kudos to you. In the future, I'd love to try a pina colada, lava flow, or other one-serving cocktail. There's a great divey/tiki vibe going, and the bartenders are friendly and pour a strong drink. If you're in the area, and especially if you're with a group looking to get the night started quickly, check it out!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Since I do not go clubbing and socialize anymore I did not know were to go on a Thursday night. We were looking everywhere for a bar with good vibes and drinks and finally stumbled on this little gem. The dj played old school hip hop. The bartender was dope...a true mixologist.

Yelp
First bar tiki bar I visited in SF after moving. By far my favorite. Great staff, great drinks, and fun venue. Do yourself a favor and stop in!
google avatar

Oleg H.

Yelp
While im not the demographic for this place - they do deliver on their brand. A tourist trap tikki bar with music. They have an array of specialty drinks most of which heavily rely on sugar, cheap booze, and in quite a few cases fire - as decoration. They have a DJ playing the music the crowd seems to enjoy. Its worth a stop on a NB bar hop.
google avatar

Claudine V.

Yelp
Doors don't open next door until 10 pm because of a private party so we walked into here and my gfs had their first drink. No cover charge. Spacious inside. Typical tiki bar. Good service and good drinks.
