The 20 Best Restaurants in Reykjavík, Iceland | Eater

"Reykjavík has a great selection of Thai restaurants, though none are as popular as decades-old Ban Thai, which, despite its kitschy decor, has lured in a number of celebrities for dinner. The menu is massive, around 200 items, encompassing recipes from every part of Thailand, though everything, from spicy Chiang Mai-style curries to the keow wan roti, is made from scratch." - Nicholas Gill

Incredible restaurant with the sweetest service. There's over 160 menu items that they absolutely make to perfection. I've almost never seen a menu this large executed with such skill. Food, drinks, vibe - outstanding. More than just a regular Thai restaurant. Thank you!

We chose Ban Thai because others had recommended it for gluten-free. The vegetarian, gluten-free Pad Thai was delicious and offered good spice level (not too sweet, either). We made a reservation so we would not have to wait. For the price, there wasn’t a large portion, which is why I didn’t give it 5-stars.

Great Thai restaurant near downtown. Playing Xmas music doesn't add to the atmosphere. The food was very good. Tom yum soup, massamun curry, and a tofu vegetable dish all very well created and spiced. Delicious 😋

Unfortunately, our visit was disappointing. We had to wait a very long time for our food and it was not busy. The menu is poorly structured, and the prices for beef and lamb dishes are not clearly displayed, only with one sentence on the front page. The portions were very small and did not justify the high prices. Additionally, the restaurant was uncomfortably cold, which further affected the overall experience.

Don’t know what you want for dinner? Go to Ban Thai. Craving spicy food in a country where black pepper is considered daring? Go to Ban Thai. Want to feel like you are transported to Thailand on the most dreary winter days in Reykjavík? Go to Ban Thai. I am astonished how any place with such an extensive menu can consistently maintain such high quality food, on an island where supplies are challenging, but they hit the bulls eye every single time. We are slowly making our way through the menu (weekly visits over the last 2 years since moving to Iceland) even though there are favorites I want to keep ordering. Having eaten Thai food all over the world including repeated trips to Asia including time spent in Thailand, I can say that Ban Thai is up among the world’s best Thai restaurants. Colleagues and guests we have brought here all agree. Anyone who says otherwise is used to the sweet gloppy crap served in the name of Thai food only. From the minute I first opened the menu and read the treatise on Thai food, I knew we were in for something truly special. And even though I pride myself on having an asbestos mouth/chilihead, that jungle curry allllmost defeated me (in a good way, I took it home and enjoyed it for lunch). Believe the spice recommendations. If you are a foodie- this place is a must visit!!

AWESOME Thai restaurant. Forget Iceland, this is the best Thai restaurant I’ve ever been to. The Thai iced tea was perfect, not too sweet. The spice levels here are the REAL DEAL (and I eat spicy food often). We were lowkey sweating from level 2-3 and took a real challenge to finish our max level 5 dish. The basil tofu was our favorite due to the sweet Basil sauce. The drunken noodles were also flavorful with good spice levels. The “jungle curry” was really spicy we were sweating and panting after a few bites, only get it if you’re serious about spice.

They tell you upfront that they will be slow when it's full, so park in and order a whiskey. The food is good, worth the wait, but not the price. It was 130$ for the 3 of us with one beer and 2 appetizers.

Delicious! Went here for an early dinner without a reservation and got a table with no problems. Food arrived quickly and was really good-- very fresh ingredients. Portions are not huge. Service excellent.
