"The majority of Banana Hut is taken up by a huge charcoal pit that runs the length of the small restaurant. And that charcoal pit certainly earns every inch of the real estate it takes up because it’s responsible for some really good jerk chicken. This one hits all the notes we’ve come to expect from a proper jerk: smoky, spicey, juicy—even the chunks of white meat that are tossed in there. Banana Hut is in South Miami, about a half-hour from Downtown, but it deserves to be on your radar whether you live nearby or just happen to be passing through, maybe on the way back from hanging out with flamingos at the nearby Zoo Miami." - ryan pfeffer

"Banana Hut is a casual Jamaican restaurant in South Miami. The majority of the restaurant is taken up by a huge charcoal pit that churns out the go-to dish here, jerk chicken. It hits all the jerk chicken notes: smoky, spicey, juicy - even the chunks of white meat that are tossed in there. Banana Hut is about a half-hour from Downtown, but it deserves to be on your radar whether you live nearby or just happen to be passing through, maybe on the way back from hanging out with flamingos at the nearby Zoo Miami." - Ryan Pfeffer

Forever Blessed

Google
Extremely disappointed!! I don’t know what kind of rice they used but it’s disgusting! I only got one piece of chicken…everything else was bone for the brown stew plate! The flavor was awful! My husband got the oxtail ,,,,he threw up…he said it tasted as if they used an old pot of rice and a new pot,,,also the oxtail tasted old! Neither of us put a dent in our food at all! My daughter did get the curry chicken and she said it was okay and ate it! Over $50 spent and wasted! The rating here is wrong and very misleading because this was gross food! We always find Jamaican restaurants when we travel for over 20 years! This was the absolute worst Jamaican food we’ve ever had!!

Google
I'm over here to meet the great chef Gary and tasteing his delisious chicken soup because they out of jerk chicken.. happy veterans day! I'm so happy I came!!! Home made food... Mmmm mmm mmm

Gloria Bautista

Google
Went in and they gave me the oldest beef patties they had. The lady was going to give me the fresh patties and a man with her told her to give me the old patties. So wrong.

Google
So disappointed…ordered jerk pork. The pork look like it was not cooked properly and the seasoning was non existent. The jerk sauce was watered down, the cabbage salad has no seasoning and the rice was very dry. The food there used to be so good. I don’t know what happened, did they change the cook?

Google
This restaurant used to be so amazing. It’s been on a slow decline for years. I ordered chicken soup today. It was very much so a Spanish style soup with tons of celery and carrots. No yam, sweet potato is anything you’d come to expect from a Jamaican soup.

Google
Great food and vibe! They also provide catering service. They catered for my father-in-law's funeral, and my guests are still raving about how good the food was. Thank you, Banana Hut Staff!

Google
I’m happy to write about excellent food from Banana Hut. I searched for a different taste yet within my neighborhood. The brown stew chicken and oxtails dinners very flavorful and huge portions left something for brunch. This type quality meal is normally found after having to travel a nice distance. Best kept secret was in my backyard the whole time. Treat yourself and simply try this place, it’s worth it.

Bought 4 lunches today for some workers at my residence. Each lunch under $9 and plentiful. Every person said their dish was great but needed salt(personal preference). Cordial staff/owner. Will order again.

Yelp
This place was the best. I catered some amazing food from here! Going to miss your cooking Mike and Fam! Please come back.

Yelp
I went to pickup jerk chicken from this place in hopes of trying something real delicious and sadly the chicken was extra dry. It's strange because when we went, there was clearly chicken on the grill while we were there. Wouldn't they think that their new customers would appreciate chicken right out of the grill or at least give the option to wait if it wasnt ready in that moment? I mean pollo tropical at least gives chicken that seems right off the grill. How are you going to let pollo tropical make your chicken seem old? Instead we got dry, slightly warm chicken with some decent seasoning. The rice and peas had barely any peas in it and I couldn't find a hint of coconut milk in it. Steamed vegetables were ok yet flavorless. Sadly after this experience we won't be coming back again. It's a shame. This place has been here a long time and came highly recommended. Kendall deserves better.

Yelp
Hell to the yes. Flavor, check. Tenderness, check. Quality, check. Amazing prices, check. What more can you ask for?

JoCat R.

Yelp
This is the best jerk pork in all of Miami. If you have not tried this place, run there now!!! I have tried a lot of jerk pork in Miami and by far this is the tastiest. The rice and peas is amazing too. Would keeping coming back here over and over again. And by the way, their Jamaican patties are only one dollar $1. You cannot beat that.

Katherine A.

Yelp
Is it true it's permanently closed now??? I love this place. Best jerk chicken I've ever had!

Shelley J.

Yelp
Friendly staff, take out restaurant, had a few items Stew peas is amazing we order all the time. When it comes to jerk chicken or pork right spices up !! The curry chicken or goat was delicious and meat tender. Banana Hut will satisfy your Jamaican hunger

Crystal W.

Yelp
We were looking for authentic Jamaican food while we were visiting the Miami area and stumbled on this place. The jerk chicken and jerk pork were excellent, as were the rice and peas. Employee were very personable as well. Would definitely recommend!

Allison D.

Yelp
Jamaicahme hungry just to think about that Jerk chicken man!! I can't believe it took me so long to find this place/ literally a hidden Gem. I found it by coincidence and boy am i happy about it. The restaurant is very small and due to covid it only takes "to go "orders, i believe. We got the curry goat, rice and beans, steamed veggies and the jerk chicken, all with the same sides, wow just Wao the chicken was literally one of the best jerk chickens I've had, smoked and perfectly spiced, the goat was so tender and juicy, and the rice had a nice coconut taste, just delicious!! The portions are good and also the prices. Can't wait to go back!

Danielle M.

Yelp
Delicious Jamaican food. I ordered the brown stew chicken lunch special and it's such a great deal for the amount of food you get for the price. One of my favorite Jamaican spots down here - they are so hard to find in Miami.

S D.

Yelp
Worst oxtail I've ever had. Inedible. For the oxtail dinner, it was $20 and I stupidly left a tip before trying the food. It was so bad I'm at a loss for words. Plus it was cold. And the vegetables were just cabbage with a few random kernels of corn and some sliced up green vegetable (green beans?) thrown in for color. And it only came with two little plantains which weren't cooked enough. Ridiculously bad food. I seriously can't remember when I've had food this bad before. All I can think is that the other reviews were either paid for or written by friends and family. Simply horrible.

Paul K.

Yelp
Just another party with Banana Hut feeding everyone. All I heard was how good the food was. I went with the Brown Stew Chicken and it was amazing. It is always nice to bring some great flavor to the party. Thanks Mike and Team!!

Thomas W.

Yelp
Just got one item to try this out on a whim. The jerk pork has a delicious flavor on its own and then dip it in the jerk sauce for more zing! Really quite good and next time in the are will try out their jerk chicken and dinner plate.

Michael H.

Yelp
I had never tried Jamaican food besides Jamaican patty so I was eager to try this hole on a wall by my house. Let me tell you that this place does not disappoint, I had peas and rice, Jamaican ox tail, and jerk chicken and let me just say that it was absolutely delicious! The food was packed full of flavor and you can tell that they mount their heart into it. And to top it all off, the customer service was top notch and really made me feel like a regular. I highly recommend this place to anyone look for some good food.

Victoria M.

Yelp
two orders the jerk chicken very dry, no jerk sauce what so ever, shouldnt have to ask for it on jerk chicken? rice is hard and old, no flavor to the cabbage. customer service very poor but normally that's no an issue because usually at Caribbean places the workers are rude but food is divine but that wasn't the case here pick a struggle. Poor service and bad quality of food, very sad, brown stew chicken had okay flavor but weirdly hard? Don't understand. do better.

Elena K.

Yelp
Great little gem in the corner of a shopping center. Best jerk chicken in miami, very authentic charcoal grilled taste. The curry chicken is very delicious as well as the oxtail. Don't forget to pick up a few patties with your order.

Chris H.

Yelp
Good flavor, just a little too spicy for me, but if you can handle the pepper this is a good option.

Keith R.

Yelp
The worse Jamaican food in Kendall and over price. Service was very poor and confrontation when we asked about high price $15.52 for a curry goat. Place not so clean and young boy sitting with no mask. We went there twice First and Last. DON'T EAT THERE!!!

Justin M.

Yelp
Banana Hut just might be the most overlooked eatery in Kendall, but probably all of Miami. When I die, Banana Hut is gonna cater that shindig. I can't believe it's taken me this long to try their food. I've lived in and around the area for years now and it took a Postmates casual browse to finally decide. I ordered the jerk pork and the charcoal smoke is on point. I've never been to a Caribbean cookout before but I imagine this isn't too far from how jerk pork is traditionally prepared. The dry rub on it was revelatory. It's like that one scene where Homer Simpson hallucinates after eating a hot chili, that's what my palette experienced. It was transcendent. The veggies weren't boring, they were steamed and absorbed the assortment of spices of the jerk pork. The rice and beans weren't dry either. I'll definitely be either eating at or ordering from this place again.

Nadine T.

Yelp
We were in the West Kendall Miami area today and were craving some yardee food to eat. Google directed us to the nearest Jamaican restaurant Banana Hut. We got the jerk chicken and red peas soup. When I ate the jerk chicken-OMG! it taste so good! The authentic flavor of the spices and the wood-burn smoke flavor had my taste buds watering for more. It's one the best jerk chicken I've had in a long time. It reminded me of back home in Jamaica. It was so good that I had to turn around and head back on the turnpike to Banana Hut to get more delicious jerk chicken to take home. The red peas soup was also very delicious and full of food with authentic spices. The guys at Banana Hut are very nice people. We will definitely be back again now that we've found the best Jamaican restaurant. Nuff Respek Banana Hut!!!

Andrew K.

Yelp
Best jerk i have had outside of Jamaica. Very authentic. Cooked over charcoal and you can tell the difference. Had the jerk chicken, jerk pork and curry chicken. All were outstanding.

Max T.

Yelp
Come on in and let Michael take care of you, this is the best Jamaican food in Kendall, and debatably Miami. I get the jerk pork, and a curry chicken patty, which never misses. The meat is grilled to smoky perfection with great flavor, and mixes perfectly with the rice and peas. Patties are flavorful and fresh. Portions are generous and affordable, and will likely you last you two meals.

Sareyna I.

Yelp
Lawd... talk about good!!! On vacation and we just happened to be in the area and needed a good meal before heading to the airport. We definitely will be visiting again!

Emily G.

Yelp
First time eating Jamaican food , the Jamaican jerk was bomb , portions are huge rice was okay , plantains were a little greasy .

Kiara M.

Yelp
Small restaurant and genuinely good. Authentic Jamaican food that tastes amazing. The price is good and the food even better. Bring cash because there's a 4% service charge for card. I'll definitely be back for more. This was my first time here and it was great. The food is fresh and hot and I absolutely loved it. Ordered jerk pork, veggies, plantains, rice and peas with a brown stew gravy.

Kix K.

Yelp
I currently live in Michigan but when I used to live down there my friends took me to this restaurant multiple times and I fell in love with their jerk pork !!!! A lot of flavor and just one word - tasty ! Now I order jerk pork or chicken in here hoping it tastes like the one from here .... unfortunately nothing like their jerk pork/ chicken. I really miss their food it's definitely worth trying and still my favorite Jamaican restaurant :)

Cristina P.

Yelp
Haven't been here in years since I moved from Miami. My dad and I used to go frequently. Best jerk chicken IN MIAMI!!!!!!!!

Sharonda D.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never been here before. It's literally around the corner from me. This may have been my first visit but it won't be my last. The place is clean and the food is AMAZING!!! I haven't had better jerk chicken in Miami, ever!!! I had every intention to share my food with my family because the portion was huge but I ate it all and I don't regret it!! I'll have to get enough for the whole family next time.

Veronica M.

Yelp
I live so close to this restaurant and have never been to it. I was going to go to La Perla, which I always go to but saw this place and thought let me try it out. I hopped on to yelp and read the reviews and liked what I saw. When we when in the place isn't too big but right when you walk in they have an open kitchen and you're able to see the chefs right away, everybody was so welcoming greeted us and asked if we have ever been. We told him that it was our first time and that we were excited to try it out we wanted to eat their jerk chicken and it was amazing. The taste was amazing bit spicy but I'm into spice, the rice was super good the veggies that come on the side where good wished I would of gotten a little more you also get sweet plantains on the side. I also had these fritter patties that were awesome I got two of them. Will be coming back I want to check it out on a Friday because I want to eat there conch soup.

Alex A.

Yelp
I have been to many Jamaican Restaurants all over Miami. This place has my Favorite Jerk Chicken in town. Guarantee it. Or your Money Back.

Mady L.

Yelp
Best oxtail and patties in town! The jerk pork is great too! We can't get enough banana hut. Consistently delicious! And an absolute favorite of ours!

Claudia O.

Yelp
The most delicious food and the staff is the friendliest. The jerk pork was to die for and the oxtails were so tasty and delicious. This is definitely one of the best Jamaican restaurants I've tried all over Miami. We loved it !!!!

B. B.

Yelp
This place is my new favorite. Highly recommend the jerk chicken, festivals, goat head soup, and the ice cream is fantastic! And they have ting and the guys are funny and easy to talk to.

Natasha T.

Yelp
Authentic Jamaican food! I had the curry chicken today. And it is delicious! Had to put down the fork to write a review. The food is hot and fresh as well. I didn't really know where I wanted to eat today. I am well pleased and satisfied with my lunch from Banana Hut.

Lem W.

Yelp
Customer service was great that's about it. I ordered oxtail and white rice w/ plantain. The oxtail tasted okay and they were pretty big but the rice was bland had no salt and the plantain was dried out and tasted old.

Robert V.

Yelp
I had the oxtail with rice and peas and it was really good it had the taste I was desiring and will definitely be back. Looks like they have authentic Jamaican food here. Small place so not too many can dine here

Meshia F.

Yelp
The jerk chicken and jerk pork are definitely falling-off-the-bone authentic. And their gungo peas and rice is amazing. Peg bread fi top it off.

Neal K.

Yelp
Food is good. But poor business people. The week before I spent $85 on take out. I thought it was nice to purchase some Caribbean ice cream that they sell. When we opened it up it was terrible, obviously re frozen. When I took it back i was greeted very unpleasantly by the owner or manager. Food might be good but I am never going back!

Yelp
I visited Banana Hut yesterday (Saturday). It was an overall okay experience. Location: This restaurant is located in a plaza all the way in Southwest Miami near the Kendall/Richmond Heights area. The plaza is not that diverse, mostly Latin/Hispanic customers all around so I was surprised to see a Jamaican restaurant smack dab in the middle of a Latin sea of patrons. Decorations/Atmosphere: There were no real decorations or ambiance to speak of. The place is small. It has a few chairs & two small tables. If you want, you can eat there but it is such a tight space, most people don't. Customer Service: There was one middle aged man working the front counter & by the time I had arrived he had just finished assisting 3 (three) people who came before me. He was not very friendly nor did he formally introduce himself so I don't know if he was the owner or just someone who works there. Judging by the size of the place, he may have been the owner. Food: The food here is fairly priced and cheap. All of the food was sitting in warmers & had been made earlier in the day. That does not bother me one bit but I know some Yelpers like their food made upon order. I ordered jerk chicken with rice & peas and gravy on the rice; there was also cabbage & two sweet plantains in the meal. The food was decent. The jerk seasoning was pretty good, nothing awesome but not bad. The chicken was kind of dry in the middle but it was very soft. Would I drive all the way from South Miami to beyond Richmond Heights to order food here again? Probably not very often.

Cathie C.

Yelp
Come on mon, this is the best Jerk chicken other than home cooking. The new owners are very accommodating. Most of all the food is the best. Not toooo spicy. This is a tiny place but there are chairs and tables for a few.The service is friendly and normal time. You know this is the island style. No rushing , no drama. Come and enjoy or take home.

Jake H.

Yelp
Was looking very forward to trying out their food. Parking was a nightmare. Circled the lot several times and finally gave up. I'm sorry I didn't get to try the food but the location sucks. The owner should demand rent refunds due to lost customers.

Mark T.

Yelp
This spot is incredible. Make sure you choose Banahut for authentic Jamaican Jerk.... Patties are great

Nikki G.

Yelp
My first time trying Jamaican food and I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything was. Got the jerk chicken and it came with rice, bean and plantains. Service is a bit slow like someone has mentioned but it's worth the wait!

Sarah C.

Yelp
Some of the best beef patties I've ever had! Always fresh and flaky and never short on meat!

Brandon C.

Yelp
This is a great restaurant and great food but the rice and peas from the ox tail wasn't pleasing would have been five star so waiting until next time

Tony C.

Yelp
Best jerk and Jamaican cuisine I have had Jerk Chicken in every known Jerk Oasis in the USA and Jamaica and Banana Hut's is right there with the best of them. The Seasoning is right and the meat is fresh and cooked to perfection. The Proprietor is intricately involved in the preparation and serving from start to finish and you feel at home while you are there. All the other fare is done just as well and fresh to order.

Paula R.

Yelp
I order food all the time from here. My usual order is curry chicken with rice and side of beans and vegetables. I also tried the jerk ribs hot and spicy pretty delicious. I never ate at the restaurant because it is extremely small . There doesn't seem to be much space only for take out. The food is always tasty and delicious. The staff is friendly. If you are trying to eat healthy this is not a place to go . That's why i don't eat here regularly

Michael M.

Yelp
The place is a hole in the wall but that doesn't take away from the food. There are only two very small tabels to sit at and it is a tight fit so it is pretty much a takeout restaurant. You can tell that the chef-owner is very passionate about his cooking. I have only had the chance to eat here once and it was a good experience. I had the curry goat with rice. The goat was a very good portion and had a very good, curry flavor. Couple the leftover sauce with the rice and you have a delicious meal. I have had my fair share of Caribbean curry sauces in my lifetime but this was one of the better, more memorable ones. If you want to eat outside the box, I would definitely say give this place a try.

Janio V.

Yelp
I've never been there so I cant comment on the actual location. I gave my card to one of my co workers who went there though and he brought be back jerk chicken. This was amazing. The food was on point. The rice was great, the amount of seasoning on the chicken was just right. I definitely want to go and check it out, and will.
