The 13 Best Ice Cream Shops In Austin

"Fans of Arrested Development might know a thing or two about banana stands. In fact, the show inspired its own real-life take on the concept right here in Austin (there’s a second location near UT). Bananas are the name of the game here, but they get the full dessert treatment. They’re served frozen on a plastic spoon and dipped in peanut butter, vanilla, or chocolate (with a vegan option), then covered in toppings. If you’re not sure what toppings pair well with a banana, you’re not alone. Just choose one of the suggested options, like The Gob–a double banana dipped in chocolate and topped with nuts, or mix and match for your own combination. " - raphael brion, nicolai mccrary

Google
Ok this was the most delicious frozen banana dessert I’ve had. You get to top it the way you want. I wish we had one of these where I live because I could have one every day. Highly recommend!!

Google
BEAUTIFUL sweet treats. A little pricey, but worth it! Bananarchy serves very yummy chocolate-covered bananas right off of UT campus. Highly recommend! Server was very sweet too.

Google
Had a pleasant experience at Bananarchy today! Their employee Madison was super kind and helpful, she delivered quick and quality service with a smile on her face. Their deserts really hit the spot and the service is top notch!

Lily L.

Google
Super tasty frozen bananas! I got a chocolate covered with Oreo and peanut butter and it was not over the top with toppings. And despite the chocolate and the Oreos, it was not super sweet. The server was super nice and quick with the order. Loved this place!

Google
I was in austin for work and was staying at a hotel nearby. I looked for desserts in the area and decided to walk to Bananarchy to try it. It was delicious! I loved it. I would 100% recommend. It is inside of a nice little space and there is a security guard stationed to make sure everything is safe. Service was great too. Just go and try it, you won’t regret it!

Google
I got the peanut butter pie. The flavors were good but it’s just wayyyyy too much. Very sweet and overwhelming. If you’re going to get anything, make your own and don’t do too many toppings because the banana is already pretty sweet. I would also get the half portion if you do decide to get something off the menu. I thought this was going to be a somewhat healthy snack or late night dessert but it’s definitely not that.

Nandini B.

Google
Delicious frozen banana desserts that always hit the spot. Although it can take 10-15 minutes for the bananas to be prepared, it is well worth the wait. Bonus points for the Arrested Development references on the menu :-)

Melissa Mendez

Google
Very delicious choco bananas! You can get to choose if you want half or full size and you can build your own with all the toppings and chocolate options. They offer vegan options too.

Yelp
These are a must try!! These bananas were so good. Mine was the m&m one and it HIT. The chocolate dip was so thick and didn't really crack/fall off the banana once you started eating it like a dipped paleta or something... so that's good it wasn't messy + great flavor + frozen banana = happy Bella :) #healthqueen My sister got the Texas Two Step which had chocolate dipping, pecans, toffee, cinnamon, and peanut butter drizzle. This banana was outstanding. For some reason the cinnamon really brought everything together in the best way. The soft banana paired with the crunchy hardened chocolate dipping and the toffee pieces really made this banana extra special. Lots of great textures ‍
google avatar

Silas D.

Yelp
Speedy and delicious. Spring for the wholesie - it's not too decadent. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Dessert food truck on the drag! They have frozen dipped bananas, many options to choose from. Got the Texas 2 step, but substituted the toffee for stroop waffle. The full size was about $8. The chocolate coating was great and they were generous with the toppings!
google avatar

Yelp
Maybe it's a personal preference thing but this is just not a good dessert. The idea is there, but the execution was extremely disappointing and the flavor options are very lacking. I love bananas, but the ones we ordered were clearly over ripened when frozen and had that very unpleasant brown banana flavor and texture. I really wanted to like this place but the desserts we got were pretty close to inedible and we ended up throwing them away which i NEVER do. Two stars rather than one because the people were nice enough, and the prices were reasonable enough for an austin spot
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
I think there are many different expectations for this dessert and when it doesn't fit that expectation people are bummed. It doesn't make this place good or bad just a personal preference thing. I personally just didn't find it good. It's a frozen banana like a popsicle, I would have liked it to be closer to a soft serve texture. However that's not the reason why I gave it two stars. The toppings are good but underwhelming and frankly this place is so expensive for what it is whether you love it or not. A full banana with toppings is anywhere from $5-6.50. This is probably the highest margin business in the world. Wholesale cost is probably $0.15 for toppings and a $0.30 banana.... I could see this being a cheap dessert for a college student given it's location at $2 for a half and $3 a full but much like anything else that is unique in Austin slap on a 100% premium. If I'm being completely honest, I think I'm just jealous of the 75-80% margins that this place brings in and wished I had thought of the idea. Really is the Amazon of dessert spots.

Yelp
Wow. What a cool idea. I was visiting Austin and just browsing on Yelp and saw this and had to stop by after seeing pics and reading reviews. Unique idea and the end product is amazing. They serve the banana at the perfect temperature to devour as well. Not so cold you get a brain freeze but cold enough to stay in one piece. The girl working was friendly and I took her recommendations for making mine but this thing was delicious. Lots of outdoor seating around that seems to be shared with a couple other businesses
google avatar

Tina D.

Yelp
It's located on UT campus, and is a great treat for the heat. You can customize the banana. I had white chocolate and toffee on it. The spoon that comes with is chilled, so it doesn't melt too quick.
google avatar

Sandra B.

Yelp
Surprise dessert spot for valentines day! My husband knows i love dessert but he wanted to be spontaneous and check this spot out instead of going for something on the dessert menu after dinner. Located on UT campus. There wasn't many people around but one other guy and us. We ordered the cookie crumble and the afternoon delight. I was very surprised by how good these were. The banana was basically frozen but not to the point where it hurts your teeth. The flavor combos were excellent. I got a little sick of it half way through though. So many split one with someone !
google avatar

Kate Z.

Yelp
Wow guys, I didn't expect to like this so much, but I shouldn't have been surprised, because frozen banana is literally the best. I even stuck with covering plain, low sugar, which is banana with peanut butter and graham crackers, and it tasted delicious. They know their combos. It's the perfect treat for a hot day. However, I still feel like I can make this at home, so I feel wrong paying for it, but whatever they do they do it well at this food truck. They even have vegan chocolate. The treats came out in like less than a minute too. I may be back :)
google avatar

Brettny J.

Yelp
I tried and liked the Texas Two Step this time. The cinnamon will probably make you cough. I didn't love the taste of the banana this time... it tasted like it was going bad which may be typical with frozen bananas but it kind of ruined it.
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
This place is amazing! I'm from Houston but every time I'm in Austin I make sure to stop here for a sweet treat. This is my all time favorite dessert place bc it feels healthy, I mean it's bananas!! My go to order is a make your own banana, size wholsie with vegan dark Chocolate, pecans and as much peanut butter drizzle possible. I swear by this place, you will love it and leave feeling great! Please come to Houston Bananarchy!!!
google avatar

Bruce E.

Yelp
I went only because I was with my 12 year old granddaughter. Wow was I underestimating. This was a delicious treat. Imagine a cold creamy banana dipped in white chocolate, rolled in toffee bits and drizzled with Nutella. It was a plastic spoon frozen in the end for a handle. They do only one thing and do it very well

Noa C.

Yelp
Marina was super helpful and kind. Her banana was instagram worthy and super delicious!!!
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
This is bananas! I did not expect a frozen banana treat to taste so good. I went for the full size because I was hungry, but I couldn't finish it as it is a really hefty, caloric banana and overwhelmingly sweet. I got it with chocolate and oreos, which was such a tasty dessert. I paid over $6 for one banana, which is quite pricey. You can customize the banana with different toppings and drizzles. Bananarchy is located in a plaza with shared picnic bench seating.
google avatar

Melynda S.

Yelp
Fun dessert place! Bananarchy is a customizable frozen banana dessert place - add a dip like chocolate or peanut butter to a half or whole banana and then customize with drizzles and toppings like Oreos, sprinkles and so much more! They also have signature bananas that you can choose from. And there are vegan options available! It is $3-5 dollars for a simple 1 topping banana, while a signature is $4.50-5.50. While it is good - is it basic and slightly expensive for what it is. Fun place to try, but you can easily recreate at home for much less expensive.
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
It's been over a week and I'm still craving these bananas. I enjoy a good chocolate covered banana, but this is a whole new level. They cover a large banana with whatever toppings you like and have a great selection of pre-selected combinations if you can't choose. I went with chocolate and caramel and toffee and opted for the full banana because I have a major sweet tooth and I can eat a lot. That said, I almost couldn't finish it!!! It was sooooo good. The banana was super fresh and the toppings tasted that way too - I'm always nervous about toppings because so many places have stale ones but that was not the case here. Just...YUM. Also the employee working was super sweet and conversational. I wish the city I live in had this place.
google avatar

Suhasini A.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised with this place, it was a very refreshing treat as well as a healthy one! There are a variety of toppings to choose from including chocolate sauce, m&ms, graham crackers, marshmallow fluff, and plenty more! The service is a 10/10, you order at the counter and the dessert is ready in seconds. It is a food truck so the ambiance is very casual and great for a quick treat. Highly recommend if you love frozen fruit treats - its a must try!

Riley M.

Yelp
Very sad because online said they close at 10:30 on Saturdays, so I walked all the way just for the employee to say she cannot take our order. She claimed they were closing in 10 minutes (10pm) and she cannot take my order since there was a line. Very disappointed as all I wanted was a frozen banana. Will not return.
google avatar

Tracey Z.

Yelp
WOW! this place has been on my list for so long, so glad I finally visited! Will definitely be returning! Great vegan options! The bananas are not too sweet, not too rich! A perfect snack on a hot summer day! I love the variety of toppings to choose from and how each banana can be so different. The Peanut Butter Pie banana is so creamy and the peanut butter pairs so well with the chocolate and banana. The Joe Banana packs a punch. Strong coffee flavor perfect for coffee lovers balanced by a sweet toffee. Delicious!
google avatar

Remy V.

Yelp
Yummy!!!! Bananas are my thing so I had to try this! All the options make this place so great. I got 3 bananas within a span of 2 days..... embarrassing ... NOT!!! Lol I love this place and they need to expand to Dallas! Try the vanilla with graham cracker and toffee all over - amazing
google avatar

Annie M.

Yelp
i LOVE this place!!! Its so freaking delicious. You dont need to ask for many toppings because even just one is sweet enough. Things i appreciate: - the bananas are always perfectly ripe - even if you do delivery with a food app, it always arrives pretty much perfectly in tact - they've never gotten our order wrong, and its always been so delicious! We've been eating bananarchy for a couple of months now, on multiple occasions (I'd say we've ordered from them about 10 times in the past year or so (we love it!). There came a point last december when, two times in a row, i found a tiny piece of tin foil in the chocolate part (I would assume from part of their chocolate melting process), so i reached out and left them a phone call to inform them. Kat from Bananarchy was kind enough to text back and offer a free banana in exchange - and honestly, we've eaten bananarchy two more times since then (it is now march 2022), and we have yet to find a foil piece. Love this place! perfect for a date night or dessert, especially cause they're open a little later than other places :)

Terri S.

Yelp
Delicious!! Just had the Texas 2-Step and it did not disappoint. Will definitely be ordering that again. Would definitely recommend ya'll to try it!!
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
Bananarchy is a fun food truck located in the area next to Urban Outfitters. It's a great snack to grab around campus and the quality of ingredients was very good. In all honesty, i didn't try this place until recently because I never got the hype around a frozen banana dipped in chocolate, but it was better than I expected. I would definitely come back again for a nice treat.
google avatar

mallory t.

Yelp
Maybe they're having sprinkle supply chain constraints. I'm not sure what I actually need to order to get sprinkles on the whole thing. My orders are never consistent. They're so good but it's really annoying to not be able to get the same thing.
google avatar

Suriya S.

Yelp
It's pretty much exactly what you would expect. Frozen banana with chocolate or other toppings. I think it's a bit expensive for what it is but it is a reliable dessert option in west campus. I believe they are also open pretty late. It is located in the space 24 area, next to cava and lucky lab.
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
Amazzzzzzzing!!! I loved Bananarchy! Such a great way to decorate a banana. We had the Texas two step and the Peanut Butter pie. Lots of options of toppings, dips, drizzles and sprinkles. The vegan options were a plus, but there is something for everyone. You will be glad you stopped by this little gem near the UT campus.

Chris M.

Yelp
Lol five minutes a banana. Made us wait 15 minutes to order and then made us wait to order and wait in que. Not evolutionary. Barely banana. Mucho anarchy.
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
You would think one couldn't ever become so obsessed with frozen bananas covered in chocolate, but I have become that person. I'm not even that big of a fan of bananas, but this place just gets me every time. Their desserts are so satisfying & they come without the guilt of eating something like ice cream, cookies, or cake. They have lots of different dipping & topping options, and you can get a whole or a half of a banana. Fun fact about me & this food truck: I used to think it was called the Banachary... until I was humbled by google maps. Anyways, go try this place out!
google avatar

Mariah T.

Yelp
Ok anything chocolate covered is good, but these chocolate covered bananas were out of this world. In Austin their is an over abundance of food trucks. I was looking for a sweet truck and came across Bananarchy. When I GPS it, I had a little difficultly finding it. Just know that you need to turn down a street and it's not on the main drag. I forgot to take a picture in my hastened state. I ordered a customer frozen banana with dark chocolate, peanut butter, and peanuts. It was amazing. The day was kinda rainy so this definitely made up for that.
google avatar

Bradley B.

Yelp
Yummy bananas with a ton of different varieties. The staff was nice too. I would go back
google avatar

Esther S.

Yelp
I see what the hype was about these! Half healthy but half guilty pleasure. I love how refreshing and cold these bananas are! They stay frozen longer than ice cream and can withstand the Texas heat. The banana I got was almost a full foot long and was too big for even me and my roomie! I'll be a regular here as I know I'll get cravings. Only $10 for 2-serving size dessert They really layer on the toppings so you definitely get your moneys worth
google avatar

Kaitlin O.

Yelp
Decided to go for the full size banana rather than the half and it was actually really filling. They put on a lot of toppings so beware if you don't enjoy overly sweet desserts. I got the Cookie Crumble and I could barely taste the banana, so the sweetness really balances it out. My friends both got the Peanut Butter Pie and I don't think they enjoyed it as much due to the overwhelming amount of peanut butter and chocolate dip on top.
google avatar

Aura M.

Yelp
Really cool concept. Frozen bananas. I had the half with chocolate and sprinkles. Very delicious. Made on the spot. Def recommend.
google avatar

Lucy H.

Yelp
I love banarchy! I get the two step texan and it always satisfies my sweet tooth. It has a great crunch from the nuts, and that cinnamon flavor is soo good! The flavorless of the banana balances out the sweetness, but next time, I would take off the caramel for less of a sweetness. Overall, craving bananarchy, great idea, and a great to-go sweet snack!
google avatar

Lilly K.

Yelp
If you dont know the meaning behind this place youll love it even more when you do! As we waited for our bananas we looked them up online and turns out this place only purchases and uses fair trade bananas from socially responsible vendors! They also compost all their banana peels! Such a cool effort to know about. They had a variety of flavors but i settled on the peanut butter pie, which was dipped in vanilla, chocolate and peanut butter than completely coated with graham cracker crumbs. For a full size at $5 you really do get your moneys worth. We made the poor decision to go right after dinner so we werent able to finish the last few bites but this could be its own meal! The bananas are huge and they dont skimp you on the toppings. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating as well.
google avatar

Jane R.

Yelp
TASTY. DELICIOUS. SATISFYING. ADDICTING. Bananarchy is hands down my favorite dessert. I have tried to make my own chocolate covered frozen bananas, but it is impossible to make them like bananarcy. I wish they were open all year! I have been here at least 20 times in the last two years. I typically don't eat desserts. Bananarchy is the only dessert that I cannot say no to! I've tried many of the combinations ranging from making my own to several variations from the specialty menu. My boyfriend knows I love Bananarchy so much, that when he lost a bet, he said he would buy my Bananarchy for the rest of my life!
google avatar

Lee G.

Yelp
Frozen banana on a stick (ok, a spoon) with toppings! Amazing! Tucked away off Guadalupe in a courtyard.
google avatar

Kyle J.

Yelp
Hot damn this place is amazing! As someone who really hasn't had any good experiences with frozen bananas, this food truck turned my thoughts about the whole thing a complete 180. Prices are reasonable and the service is extremely friendly! At some point in my life I want to come back and try all the bananas because they have out there flavors like "chocolate coffee", "peanut butter, vanilla, chocolate dipped with nuts" and their version of the "everything" with 4 different dippings and 11 different toppings. For all those who are concerned, yes the vegan chocolate is great and I like it and I'm not vegan! Go ahead and give this place a try you will not regret it!

Melanie B.

Yelp
The best frozen banana I never knew I needed!! Highly suggest! The halfsie is filling enough in my opinion but they are all so good here.

Emma K.

Yelp
I love Bananarchy! It's just so good and not too expensive for a light but sweet dessert after dinner! Sometimes the wait is awhile but trust me it's worth it. As you can see I have been multiple times and my favorite is the peanut butter pie banana!
google avatar

Reese L.

Yelp
Their prices right now are pretty good. The staff is pretty friendly. One even helped me wrapped the bananas. There are also vegan options if you are vegan. I am not but it's good to know so you can bring your vegan friends
google avatar

Yelp
Food * Ordered halfsies of The Malteser, The Half Step, and The German Chocolate for 4 people, they gave us a couple of free Maltese packs because they are having the Maltese special this week. * The Malteser: My favorite one out of all three, you can really taste the Maltese * The Half Step: This one is also good, especially if you're into cinnamon * The German Chocolate: I'm not a big fan of coconut flakes so this was my least favorite but it's still pretty good regardless. Taste (texture, flavor(bland/spicy/sweet)) * The bananas are served on a plastic spoon stick. This is especially useful because on the last couple of bites there's a 98% chance that the banana will fall off the stick. So you can use the spoon to scoop the last bites. Atmosphere * It is located within Space 24 Twenty, which is an event space owned by Urban Outfitters. So the furnishings and setting are very nice and urban. Plenty of wooden chairs and tables. It's a nice place to chill * Space is outdoors so it can get really hot during the summer, but they do have a couple of electrical outlets in the area even though it is and outdoor space * Since it is located near UT, the crowd is mostly college students * Plenty of street parking available near the area
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Exactly as advertised! I had the vegan chocolate peanut butter joint and it was Fuego. Staff is friendly and efficient too. Yum!!
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
Perfect treat! I ordered the Strawberry Nutella and it was just as delicious as it sounds.
google avatar

Paisley T.

Yelp
Bananas? Dipped in chocolate? On a stick? Ummm..Hullo. YEEESSS!!! Roll up your sleeves for some legit gourmet banana dipping. This is isn't some kiddie snack. (oh but they'd love it tho). I love that the menu isn't 8 miles long and that they have really thought thru flavor combinations. And with ingredients on hand they can customize to your tastes too. They got these bananas down to a science. Anything you pick will be good. I had a the texas two-step (without cinnamon) and now I'm holding my hand to my hear swearing a vow of undyling love to banarchy. Holy bananas! Did I mention it was good? Oozy chocolate, peanut butter, toffee, and nuts....oh baby. By they way, they are HUGE! This isn't your kiddie size after school treat (like I said). Even the half size is so BIG you'll probably have to share. How about them bananas? And the grip of the spoon is genius. Makes so much sense. Stick it to the man, bananarchy.
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
Great healthy-ish dessert option for those of us that are health-conscious/trying to reach fitness goals. I ordered the frozen banana with vegan chocolate and nuts. Overall thought the chocolate was much too thick and the nuts too salty, which made this healthy-ish dessert less healthy and appealing for me. Also I couldn't make sense of the spoon stuck to the end of the banana - was it supposed to be used as a stick or as a utensil to eat the banana? It'd be much easier to eat the banana on an actual stick than a floppy spoon.
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
First customers on opening day with no one else around! Wow. If you don't want to stand in line, head to the 53rd Street location. Well, until every other person in Austin hears about the new location. Had a Halfie of the Texas Two Step. A Frozen nanner dipped in chocolate, with toffee pieces, pecans, cinnamon and peanut butter drizzle. Yeehaw! Felt like two-steppin' after eating this delicious bit of cowboy heaven.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a healthier take on desert, Bananarchy is your place. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Usually I go for a chocolate dip with Oreo and coconut. Another favorite is one of the specials they had which was called the Banana Unsplit - whip cream, strawberry jam, nuts, and chocolate dip. I've been here many times and always leave satisfied!
google avatar

Remedy R.

Yelp
If you're craving something sweet but also don't want to feel like you're indulging too much, this is the place for you - or if you simply are a banana fantastic. I like how they offer vegan dips & toppings and also plenty of non chocolate options (I don't like chocolate - shocking, right?). I also like to get the 1/2 banana size. A full frozen banana is a bit too much frozen banana for me.
