We stopped in since we have been meaning to try it since they first opened. The food was very good with generous portions. The hanger steak comes with two sides and a salad which is a substantial amount of food. The French fries come with a creamy aioli sauce and are crispy fries. The Andre’s hot chicken sandwich was fried perfectly and had minimal batter. The food was great we will be back. The beers are a bit over priced, we had four beers and dinner and our bill was $100+ I didn’t think any of the beers were worth $9+ but they were draft jolly pumpkin beers.

Google
When we were first looking at the menu and prices I was thinking that it was really pricey and not worth it, but then I tried the food! The quality matched the price, in my opinion. All of the flavors were very complex and delicious, you could tell the food was made with high quality ingredients. Plus, all of the staff we encountered was friendly, accommodating, and attentive. I really liked that they had multiple N/A beer and mocktail options. One negative note: the mocktails were pretty pricey for what they were, a small glass of black tea, cherry juice, fancy syrup was $8.50 and good N/A cocktails should have an edge to help you sip, rather than drink it too fast.

This location has a new restaurant and this one will be the new cornerstone of the block I'd forgotten how high ceilings and open this place feels. With big chairs and tables spread out everyone has room to spread out and enjoy the time. The bar is a big U with lots of seats and prompt skilled bartenders. They have a great craft beer selection on tap. For food we had the most tender mussels, and the sauce they came in was flavorful and delicious. The steak was very good and cooked perfectly to order. The cheesecake dessert was rich and wonderful, and I'm not even a fan of cheesecake! Be sure to check out this great Tavern!

Google
It was a first time trying out the Bandit Tavern & Hideaway. We were greatly impressed. Besides having an inviting server, our food was satisfying

Google
Got the Brussel sprouts, brisket pizza, and the hot chicken sandwich. The brussel sprouts and pizza were amazing! The hot chicken sandwich was also a great sandwich, very crispy. Our only complaint would be that we wished it was a little spicier, but that’s a personal taste. Colby was a fantastic server, didn’t steer us wrong and was extremely attentive. All around feels like an upgrade to the Jolly Pumpkin.

Google
Everything was wonderful! Elizabeth, our bartender, was friendly, informative, and clearly loves her job. We tried the fries and the potato leek soup. Both were insanely delicious! The only reason for 4 out of 5 stars was because the food pricing was a bit high for what we felt we got. The small cup of soup, although delicious, as $9 and was gone very quickly. Otherwise a great time!

Google
We really liked the atmosphere, and our server - I think his name was Colby - was great. The potato soup was delicious, and I’d order that again. The barbecue chickpea sandwich was interesting, but I’d have enjoyed it more with more barbecue sauce/flavor. If I could order a side of that with it, it would have been perfect. My husband had the barbecue chicken pizza and liked it, but would have enjoyed it more if it was a little spicier. Overall, we will be back to try more of the menu, mainly because the service was SO much better than anywhere else in Royal Oak.

Really enjoyed the challah bun, burger, and toppings, but this rich plate really needed a pickled element. The dark green vinyl upholstery, rich wood tones, and high ceiling make the interior very pleasant!

Yelp
First, the service was fantastic. We arrived about an hour prior to the kitchen closing after a comedy show and there were only a few people dining in. That didn't stop the staff from greeting us with a smile and making sure we felt welcome. Keith was our server and Lenice was tending to the bar but they worked as a team making sure we had a great experience. We ordered the Brussels which were absolutely fantastic. We ordered the burger which I would argue is one of the best in the region in my opinion because it is a blend of meats that are naturally leaner so it was not fatty and greasy which may appeal to some but not what I consider a quality burger. We finished with the brisket pizza which was also fantastic. The chimmichurri sauce ties all of the flavors together perfectly! Our server, Keith was very knowledgeable about all of the products which helped guides our order because we were very indecisive. Overall, great experience! Will definitely be back!

Nicole E.

Yelp
Lenice is waiting on us, she's quite pleasant, friendly and warm too. Interior doesn't look much different than when it was JP. Ordered the harvest salad, jalapeño Napa cabbage slaw; two restaurant week dinners: 1) crispy Brussels sprouts, hot chicken and waffles, cheesecake; 2) truffle fries, truffle pizza, bison chili. $87.49. They charge a 3% for no specified reason. Hmmm. The Brussel sprouts are okay, quite bit pieces and not so crispy and drowning in what tastes like Thai chili sauce. The harvest salad was good. The Jalapeño Napa cabbage slaw was okay, no hint of Jalapeño to me though, still not bad. The truffle fries are good. Show string and a decent amount of truffle oil. The hot chicken is overly breaded, too thick for my liking. The waffles were dry and almost stale to me. The bison soup is so-so, rather runny. The truffle pizza looks like focaccia bread to me, quite a thick crust here. Not what I had envisioned at all. It's the saddest looking pizza ever. A few sprinkles and chunks of cheese at best. It's all dough, the worst kind of pizza imaginable. Three of my slices had 1-2 mushrooms on it, after removing the arugula, how sad. The bits of cheese is extremely salty, wasn't they goat cheese, maybe the Parmesan? Salt lick either way. The cheesecake had a tinge of a frozen feel to it, the berry sauce was good. The cheesecake itself was ok. The salad and fries were good. The main entrees and chili were all rather disappointing to say the least. They give you root beer flavored candies at the end of your meal. The service is very good here, that was the best part of our visit.

Yelp
The Good: I've had three great meals here -- hot chicken sandwich (the chicken breast they used was a huge portion), bbq chicken pizza (surprisingly good), and fried chicken dinner (crispy, boneless, delicious coating). I've also had the Bastone frites (not as good as the Bastone days, but still worth ordering), and jalapeño napa cabbage slaw. The new menu is a huge improvement over Jolly Pumpkin. I wish they would bring back Bastone's steak sandwich, but not to be, I guess. They did a nice job with the interior decor, wide open and spacious, cool bar. Also, huge beer selection. Very clean. The Bad: The service has been mixed. My most recent experience was on a Wednesday night, and they seemed pretty understaffed (like everywhere else in the world, I guess). We had to wait several minutes at the bar --- there was no bartender there. And when we moved to a table to eat, it was a little bit slow for our server to arrive. But once she did, she did a good job. Getting hit with a 3% service fee kind of sucks. The price for the food is already high (I get it, that's everywhere, thanks Bidenflation), but I'm really not a fan of that fee. I suppose it's a way to take away sticker shock from the menu, but there's something that rubs me the wrong way. It's a finger in the eye to your customers. In sum, yes, I'll be back. I like it much better than The Morrie, HopCat, and other Royal Oak offerings.

Yelp
25 minutes after being sat at the bar and literally never even acknowledged.... Not even a glance or a "be right with you." I saw it was insanely busy so I get it but 25 minutes without so much as a glance our way, even looking like they were deliberately ignoring us... not sad to see this place closed down.

Amy W.

Yelp
We decided to end our night here. They have an "Always Sunny In Philadelphia" pop up there that we wanted to experience. Unfortunately, they were closed. We did get to play a little trivia but we weren't there long enough to really participate. I loved the atmosphere. It is a large bar and great for big groups. Definitely a fun place to hang with friends. Hopefully we can make it back before the pop up is gone. What a fun concept!

Annie Y.

Yelp
Finally came to check this place out, I can't see it doing well here. We came for dinner, ended up getting a beer and an appetizer before deciding to leave and eat somewhere This place is comically over priced. $22.5 for a burger and fries??? robbery Also a pretty small menu. I would recommend going literally anywhere else. I understand paying for an experience but this place felt so average. Won't be returning to eat here, really a bummer they decided to use that space for a place like this. Could have been much better. Service was good at least

Taylor R.

Yelp
The atmosphere was unique and fun! It is very open floor plan with booths, tables a bar area and a nice outdoor patio. We went for lunch our server was very friendly and didn't forget to check on us and I got their lunch you pick two meal. I got the harvest salad which was very good I would just suggest some more vegetables in it. I also got the bandit slider which I would compare to a regular burger with crispy onions on it. The bbq sauce was interesting, that I asked for on the side it was more on the ketchup side of things instead of a bbq flavor. My husband got the brisket burger which he said was delicious with a good crunch to it with warm flavorful brisket with fresh veggies. He also had the bison chili which he said was the perfect amount of spice and not over loaded with veggies.

Ben V.

Yelp
The southern menu here is something you can get many places! The jalapeño hot honey was something incredible. It comes with the cornbread skillet which was amazing. The hot chicken sandwich was great too and the duck fat frites could use a little more duck fat. Our server was amazing and very very friendly. I would come back here in the future.

Michael F.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the challah bun, burger, and toppings, but this rich plate needed a pickled element to brighten it up. The dark green vinyl upholstery, rich wood tones, and high ceiling make the interior very pleasant!

Yelp
Hot chicken which would appear to be a featured dish was black and hard as a rock. Kind of like the piece of chicken that might have been left in the fryer for about 5 hours and someone said - "meh, serve it". Skillet pasta was almost as if someone vomited onto a skillet, melted cheese on top of it and then served it piping hot. I ate some of the top layers when it was super hot but as the dish cooled, the dish's true colors showed through and through, a chili dog chili on weird pasta, puked up onto a hot skillet at 3am. Nick the waiter was just fine and no marks against him. The ambience was like a restaurant filled with people who also didn't want to wait for an open table at the other restaurants. We should have taken a photo of the food, but we'd rather remove all forms of memories of that food. Dear Bandit, please hide away and never come back.

Yelp
Get the chicken sandwich and Brussel sprouts app! The ole Jolly Pumpkin in Royal Oak changed its name. They still serve Jolly Pumpkin brew as well as many other on tap. Full bar in the basement and just happened to be a Christmas Pop-up with a Christmas vacation theme. Since we had reservation for dinner the server was able to get us in to the themed bar without waiting in an hour long line. Service and food upstairs was on point. The hideaway bar in the basement was Busy AF and we waited a long time for a drink. Had one and bolted. Great time had by all. Will be going back outside the holiday season.

Nicole R.

Yelp
Decided to stop in recently to take in the former Jolly Pumpkin/ Bastone/ Commune space. I like the ambiance in here as it is a big restaurant and there is ample seating whether you want to sit at the bar and watch tv or come in a group. There is a downstairs bar called the Hideaway but it didn't appear to be open when I visited recently on a Tuesday night. The service here was good and the menu has a good variety all around. I love "cheat meals" which the menu has plenty of but they also had healthier options on the menu too. My friend didn't love her burger but the fries were great with the artichoke aioli served and my margherita pizza was decent but didn't have so much fresh basil on it just lots of tomatoes. I may be used to seeing a whole basil leaf on here but this is a different style. The Brussels sprouts with the pig candy were really good and a sizeble portion too to share. We also tried a side of Mac and cheese which was decent but not outstanding. It could've used some bread crumbs on top. The wines here were good and they had a nice selection. Overall I would come back and did appreciate the coat hooks on the side of the booth- genius.

Nicole M.

Yelp
Great service. Had the pimento cheese dip (7/10... could've used something to differentiate it from any other pimento dip but still delicious), brisket pizza (9/10... the dough was perfect and flavor was insane, minus one pt bc the chimichurri was a garlic bomb and though beyond yummy, only allowed me to eat one piece in a sitting), and the fried chicken plate (11/10 it was perfect). I had a great meal and great experience, they just opened and I'm excited to go back asap.

Jeffrey P.

Yelp
Not the same Jolly Pumpkin. Went here for the first time since they switched names for happy hour. Ordered pretzel bites and you get 6 little pretzel nuggets. They give you a cup of cheese dip which is way too much for how many nuggets you get. The bbq chicken flatbread was good and a large portion. I ordered 2 pork sliders for $6 a piece. They were tasty but I've never paid $12 for two sliders. I was thinking at that price they would be bigger. The staff is awesome and the happy hour beer prices are a great value but I think they are pricing themselves out of a lot of customers

Teresa V.

Yelp
Brussels sprouts and hot fried chicken sandwich were yummy, the burger was okay. Service was fine and enjoyed the ambiance.

Geoffrey V.

Yelp
Gave this place a poor review when it was the Jolly Pumpkin and this one will not be much better. to be clear, maybe it's more like 2.5 but none the less, I will not likely be back. First off, the menu is decent but seems a little pricey for what they have to offer. the drink specials are pretty limited but i did like the smoky Tequila/ mazcal drink . My wife didn't find anything on the list so ordered a blue moon, but alas, the keg was empty. They have daily specials that list the lunch and dinner specials on the same sheet and it's easy to miss that the lunch specials are not just priced for lunch, they are products ONLY available before 4:00 PM. When we went to order the bartender informed us that what we wanted was only available for lunch and that " everyone complains about it" when they are told they are not available for dinner. how hard is it to offer sliders all day??? I ordered the Cobb salad that came with Pig Candy and buttermilk ranch. You can add a Chicken Breast for , like $8.00 so I asked if it was a grilled and the bartender said it would be fresh grilled. The salad was noticeably small for being a $17.00 entree salad ( before the up charge for chicken ) and the dressing was already on it, which I think is weird for a Cobb , the pig candy ...barely noticeable and the "bibb lettuce" was rally just shredded romaine, If i had to guess. As you can likely guess already, the grilled chicken breast was NOT fresh grilled, nor was it even warm worse yet, it came diced in little pieces. What's really annoying is that I pointed this out and the bartender and after running back to the kitchen he came out and said the cook said it was fresh grilled . They offered to make it again but no way I was playing that game when the cook already lied. To their credit, they took the cost of the chicken off the bill. My wife got the bison chili and she said is was good but, even though she was told it had a little kick, she ordered some jalapenos to put on top because it didn't have much of any spice. The fries with artichoke aioli were decent but seemed like mayo with bits of artichoke in it all in all , I feel like they are pretending to be an upscale gastropub but failing to actually even deliver decent bar food.

Ashley R.

Yelp
Everything that we tried was great. Especially the shrimp appetizer. The salmon plate dish is simple but soooo good. And the friesssssss!!!!!

Chuck L.

Yelp
The name describes the pricing! $20 for burger and chips, $10 for chili. In their defense, food was good but very pricey! Service very good, nice place to visit!

Yngwie C.

Yelp
Good food. Good service. Great vibes. Nice spot to stop in when you're in Royal oak and want to grab a drink & food

Candice D.

Yelp
Not a fan of the food at all. The service was fine. But not the best I've had. The shrimp and grits had a really weird flavor. The beignets were flavorless dough. I don't think I'll be coming back.

Jennifer A.

Yelp
Went here for lunch - we were one of 3 tables with people. I ordered the salmon sandwich and my son the Mac n cheese. After waiting almost 25 minutes for our food, the Mac n cheese didn't come with the pig candy or the panko topping as advertised. Our waitress didn't stop by to see how everything was even with only 2 other tables in the building so we had to ask someone else to get her. They discounted the incorrect food item but between that and the slow service, I won't be coming back.

Max T.

Yelp
This place is a shame. It used to be called Jolly Pumpkin and was a Royal Oak staple. They must have been bought up by someone looking for a quick profit because they rebranded and jacked up the prices significantly. The food was pretty bad and very expensive. A burger at this place is now $20 and doesn't even come with fries (A $2.50 additional charge) Someone at my table spent $20 on chili and corn bread and it was pretty garbage... the chili was very watery and the corn bread was dry and overcooked. You will notice that you cannot get a decent sized meal for under $20 here. The drinks are also extortionate. A basic lager will run you $8 and a Jolly Pumpkin beer will cost you $10+. The wait staff was also very green and slow. If you like Royal Oak like I do you will realize that places like this are just trying to rip you off and make the city worse. Please do not support this restaurant and take your money to one of the many great places in Royal Oak. I would come back once they fix their prices and food quality. RIP Jolly Pumpkin

Steve L.

Yelp
We had my wife's 50th birthday party at the Bandit. They were so easy to work with, prompt, and had great service the night of the event! The food was really good, especially the Brussel sprouts. We also had 3 different sliders and all of them were great. If you need a downtown Royal Oak restaurant for a party, I would highly recommend it!

Brooke H.

Yelp
Manager in basement bar was so rude! We asked for one song request and he told us to go kick rocks, even thought we were the only people in the whole bar!

Joan D.

Yelp
This place is a big PASS. Way overpriced for super average food. Plus drinks are overpriced too. Save your money.

Rrisko510 ..

Yelp
Amazing grilled salmon sandwich!! Husband's burger was also good. Friendly wait staff.

Austin T.

Yelp
This place is absolute garbage. Why they got rid Jolly Pumpkin is beyond me. Bartenders are unknowledgeable and Manager is even more delusional. Does not know how run simple inventory and it shows. Dudes a dickhead. Do your job and order things when supplies are low. Very simple. Save your money on this one. It's not going to last long

Matthew M.

Yelp
Service was impeccably slow and disappointing. Went there on a slow Wednesday evening. Waiter easily overwhelmed, confused with simple questions, like "what is your seasonal draft?" Messed up our bill twice. Ordered one beer, two cocktails; took 20 minutes to get to the table. Had the hanger steak, was pretty good but portion was small given the price ($30). Partner had the chickpea sandwich, was just okay. Grits were dry. Fries and aioli were good. Likely won't be back.

D M.

Yelp
Food average, service great. Charge a 3% credit card usage! Had a large group, do not carry that amount of cash!!!!

Kathy L.

Yelp
We went there a couple of weeks before Christmas. Subpar service, overpriced drinks and food. Changed their name, same disappointing experience! Will not be returning.

Michele M.

Yelp
Excellent service, great beer, and wonderful food! I had a Jolly Pumpkin gift card that we weren't quite sure what the balance left on it was, but the manager, who was very personable, gave us a credit towards our bill. Highly recommend! Great atmosphere, too!

Kristen S.

Yelp
Horrible service. We ate $150 worth of food in the restaurant for several hours while watching the Lion's game, and then the bouncer gave us an hard time thinking we had just walked in and told us we couldn't go down stairs. He told us we drank too much even though we barely drank. NEVER coming back again.

Natalie B.

Yelp
I miss the old Jolly Pumpkin :( wait was long for everything and it took us like 30 minutes just to get our bill back so we could leave. The food also was not the greatest and honestly overpriced for the quality and taste.

Michelle Y.

Yelp
We had a snafu with our reservation, but they made it right!!! We had our private room and an amazing time. Everyone from the security staff waiters and managers were amazing!! Had the best time and will definitely be back! Thank you so much!!!

Brooke A.

Yelp
The restaurant is the same place with slow/poor service, just re-opened with a different name. Food was ok but prices are extremely overpriced for such a sub par establishment. I don't see this place doing well and will probably close again eventually. (The good reviews must be for the griswalds hideaway bar in the basement, which is only opened thurs-sat.)

Linda M.

Yelp
Was really excited to try this new place. Our excitement dissipated because the male server was not only slow in the head. It took them over an hour to get our food out. Additionally, I ordered cedar plank salmon and they served it on a dish minus the cedar plank??. Very disappointed. We also ordered drinks and they gave us club soda from the gun that was flat. They also did not have any kind of soda in the bottle as a product offering?? in spite of this disappointment. We are looking forward to trying your Christmas pop-up bar downstairs..... which was the advertised that it was gonna be open the same night we went in. Friday, November 24.
