Where to Find Terrific Thai Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Nestled in a nondescript Solana Beach strip mall, this popular longtime standby, around since 2004, has lines out the door on a Saturday night. Try the chicken satay, marinated in coconut milk, or the creamy panang curry with chicken. The drunken noodle dish is a must-try as well." - Helen I. Hwang

Google
Good food, typical of this type of Thai restaurant. The pad thai and drunken noodles were reliably good, meaning they didn't have a special flair but they were flavorful and well prepared. We will go back when we're in the area.

Google
Limited seating and we were lucky to get a spot without a reservation! It’s definitely worth the wait if you can’t get in right away! Huge portions and friendly service. Food is fantastic and you’ll want to come back to try more! Highly recommend! Chicken pad Thai and Thai tea pictured.

Google
A reservation is a must at this restaurant unless you don't mind waiting... my mistake that I should of tried calling to ask (apparently they do take reservations over the phone). My friend and I arrived at 6:30 on a Friday. The wait was a good 30 minutes. The restaurant is very small and tables are close together filled with customers and busy servers. The decor is all tastefully done. We ordered a couple cocktails while looking over the menu. We chose the Bay Puffs, Small Tom Kha, Pad Thai w/Shrimp, Massaman Beef and the Crispy Chicken. Service is fast and the food and drinks arrive fast. The Puffs were good. The soup, pad thai and beef were excellent with the heat we requested. The chicken was the weakest, bland. All in all a very good meal and we would definitely be back. Atmosphere: small, busy, nice decor. Service: very good. Food: very good.

Google
Top Shelf Thai! Unfortunately I ate the food too fast to take photos. Everything was amazing starting with the Tom Kha soup. I had the Roast Duck Curry with (6-7) spice out of 10 which was perfect for me but I like it hot. The shining star was the Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. It’s the best I’ve had outside of SE Asia.

We were added to a wait list and told 15-20 minute wait time. It was busy, but we did not get seated for 60 min. We sat about 5 min and no waiter with water or menus. A table of six was seated after this time and a few more minutes elapsed. The waiter finally comes up to our table and passes us to give water and menus plus drink menuto the table seated next to us. The casually drop two menus at our table, but no drink menu or water. My friend asked for water and was acknowledged. At least 5 more minutes and finally we were brought 2 glasses partially filled, one with lemon and one without. They looked like they had come from a prior diner’s table. The woman delivering asked if we were ready to order and we said yes. She then disappeared. The final straw was after a few minutes the waiter came near our table, passed by us and took the order of the table next to us who was seated later than we were. We had heard great reviews about the food, but the service was awful and we left. The table next to us was 3 behind us on the list. Extremely disappointed.

Google
Made a 7:30 PM reservation for 10 guests. Arrived at 7:30 and seated at 8 PM in a room tucked away with no AC - just fans (August) - so it started out quite warm. We all ordered hot dishes, and by the end of the meal, it was way too warm to finish eating or enjoy the atmosphere. Ordered a variety of dishes, and everyone loved their meals! Yellow Curry with Vegetable Red Curry with Vegetables Green Curry with Chicken Several Pad Thai dishes (Chicken & Seafood) Tom Yum Soup Mojito, Thai Martini, Lychee Martini The food was served fairy quickly, and we all chose our own heat levels (3-10). My husband and I chose 6 & 7 (we typically love heat), and it was a good spot - maybe could've even gone down a couple knotches, so every bite wouldn't be so spicy. Very reasonably priced! Server was friendly and funny. Plenty of vegetarian options. Other than the warm room, the atmosphere was nicely decorated and inviting. Would definitely return and recommend for a nice Thai meal! And there's a little something for everyone even if they aren't familiar with the cuisine.

Google
Stayed at the hotel across the street and this place was highly recommended by the front desk. It was amazing! Definitely the best Thai food I have had in a long time. The pineapple fried rice had such great flavour, my kids scooped it up in no time. The green curry had just the right spice and the veggies were fresh and crunchy. Very authentic, would totally go back!

Google
Best Thai take out dinner in San Diego County. Great staff with so much patience!

Yelp
I stopped by with my wife on a Thursday night and we got there right as it opened. I can't remember the name of our server, but she was super nice and welcoming. My wife is vegetarian and they had a ton of options on the menu for her. We ordered tofu summer roles, vegetarian pad Thai and the green curry with chicken upon the server's recommendation when I asked. Honestly, the food was absolutely excellent. It was so flavorful and we are definitely coming back to try more dishes. We're only an 45 minutes north up the coast, so can't wait to stop by again. Definitely come here, don't think twice.

Yelp
I am seldom in the area so it's been over a decade since I ate here but we had a fantastic lunch! We ordered: 1. Crab fried rice: generous servings of crab! Great for 3 people- we devoured every last morsel. 2. Honey roasted duck- everyone's favorite though it was a tough call- perfectly crispy skin- cooked and seasoned so perfectly. 3. Green curry- you know it's gonna be good when you see clusters of green peppercorn still attached to the stem! We sopped up every last drop of the sauce with rice. Takes me back to my childhood- it's been a long time since I had a curry so delicious. I would happily eat here again and again. Service was exceptionally patient and courteous given that it was a packed house at noon on a weekend. Food was delivered very quickly and water refilled regularly. Parking was also very easy in the big lot. I would recommend all 3 of these dishes we ordered to anyone!

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE this place! In my opinion, one of the best places to get Thai food in San Diego. I have been coming here for years with my family and friends and this place never disappoints. The pad Thai is so flavorful and has a great sauce to noodle ratio. My favorite curry is their red curry-- I always get a spicy level of 5-6. I recommend calling ahead for reservations here because I swear they are pretty packed every day they're open! The service here is great and the staff is very friendly. The interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated and there's plenty of parking available.

Yelp
This place should not be rated anything lower than a 5!!! The service, ambiance, food quality, and portions are all amazing!! We ordered these three dishes and it was enough for lunch for all 3 of us for the next day. This will definitely be added to my local rotation!!
google avatar

Julianne C.

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai food place ever. I can't count the amount of times i've gone back. No matter how long the drive, I will drive up here. I always get their Pad Thai, Yellow Curry, Sweet and Sour Soup, Flower Cups appetizer and Satay Chicken appetizer. This is a must try place

Yelp
Ordered takeout and the workers were Very friendly! Opted for the crab fried rice and Thai iced tea. The Thai iced tea was definitely yummy. The crab fried rice was ok... good but the crab wasn't hitting like it should if I'm making any sense; however, I did eat it all! Super cute inside and out!!

Yelp
The word is out! ( Unfortunately. ) Because the food is good the ambience is good and the service is excellent., That's why it's always crowded now. People know a good thing when they taste it. Kudos
google avatar

Yelp
I LOVE this place. It's really fresh. Cute little place. We ordered a stir fry, the fresh rolls and pad Thai. So good will definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Came in around 7pm and requested a table for 2, we were told it was going to be 20 minutes. We checked in 30 minutes later and were told there was one more party ahead of us...another 30 minutes later they said that we were now next. Finally got seated and our waitress tells us someone is bringing water, great so I then tell her we are ready to order and she just walks away. Literally walks away, doesn't say she'll be back to take our order. That's what upset me the most besides the hostess lying about the expected wait time.

Yelp
Great place for Thai food. Our friends recommended this place for dinner and we got three dishes and all of them were nicely done and delicious. Pork fried rice, beef pad Thai and Siamese twins. All with the right level of seasonings and spices. Just a great place for take out....you can dine in too.....
google avatar

Nina S.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite Thai restaurants in North County. Great service and delicious food. Definitely get the spring rolls and the chicken satay -- best I've had! We also love the pad Thai and the curries.
google avatar

Yelp
This container is maybe 1/4 full, but it cost $18, is there a noodle shortage I don't know about?
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Stir fry: vegetables or tofu 5/5 Pad Thai beef :4/5 Freshly made, huge portion, price is reasonable. Walk distance to sand pebble resort/Solana beach.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate a birthday for my coworker and I see why she picked this place! It was very delicious and in a really nice spot. They were able to accommodate our party of 9 without a reservation fairly nicely. There was only seating inside. However, they do have a rule that the whole party must be present before seating and you have a limit of 90 minutes for your stay. The food came out fairly quick, we all ordered a lunch special which came with delicious soup. The waitress was nice and refilled our waters the perfect amount. I would definitely come here if I was craving thai- very satisfied! My only concern was there was a lot of little gnats (they leave their door open so it's easy for them to fly in) which was a little annoying. Other than that, 5 stars for sure.

Yelp
Overall, a decent Thai restaurant. We came here on a Friday evening and got seated immediately. But, you may want to call ahead if you have a bigger group or show up at a busier time of the day. Lots of parking in the parking lot. I always get Drunken Noodles with chicken so that is what I ordered here too. I went with an 8/10 spice level but I would've handled 9 easily. If you're not one for spicy food, probably better to go with a 5 or 6. The Drunken Noodles was very very good. Lots of flavor, veggies and well-cooked chicken. My friend got a Yellow Curry. In their words, it was "cute" which basically means it was just ok. Nothing mind blowing. The service could be better. They aren't really very friendly, more like, do your job, and move on.

Yelp
Soooo good!! We love going here, every single time. Prices are fantastic and the food is the best around. Summer rolls, Tom Kha soup, yellow curry, drunken noodles, pad thai. The only dish I've had so far that wasn't my favorite is pad see ew - just a little bland and the noodles were overcooked. But I literally crave their tom kha soup and curry. I'm excited to branch out and try their kow soi! Friends service. Authentic ambiance. Just a wonderful hidden gem!

Yelp
Bangkok Bay My colleague and I had the pleasure of a dinner at Bangkok Bay. It had been a few years since my last visit to the restaurant. Parking is easy in front of the restaurant. The restaurant service is quick and efficient. We ordered a wide array of appetizers; summer roll, pot stickers and chicken satay. The were all nicely prepared. For main courses we had the Pad See Ew and the duck curry. Every dish was excellent. My colleague said It was the best Thai meal that he has had in North County San Diego. Enjoy.

Yelp
Pangang curry seafood combo is my go to. Come for lunch and it's 30% less than dinner price for that one. They have great hot tea. I like the ginger tea (a little sweet, which I love). Food comes quickly and it was easy to walk in and get a table for lunch on a Friday.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. My buddy, Bob, and I have dinner here about once a month. I always order the Seafood Pad Thai with a side of Peanut Sauce and a Thai Iced Coffee. Fantastic!

Yelp
Located not far from the Solana beachfront in a strip mall with parking, this small, eclectically decorated Thai restaurant is a hidden gem. This was our first visit and we followed the directions of the chalk-board sign that said to wait outside, but after several minutes and nobody coming out to check us in, we stepped inside, where after a few more minutes, we were seated in a cozy booth. We enjoyed some delicious bay puffs for an appetizer followed by a Panang Curry and coconut ice-cream for dessert. All were delicious. Clean bathrooms -- my husband actually came back from the bathroom saying 'Five Stars'. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the service was spotty. One of the waitresses was not dressed professionally. They brought us white rice instead of brown at first. When the entrée was delivered, the waitress said she'd be back with utensils and plates. We probably sat there two minutes waiting while I could see her flapping around in the back doing something else and our food was staring at us. After viewing the dessert menu, we hadn't actually ordered any and the waitress brought over a dessert. We decided to keep it. Free parking in the strip mall. I loved the eclectic decor, the food was great, prices average, so I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Meh whatever happened to Bangkok Bay! We have been here a few times before but today's dinner was just mediocre. What we got Spring Roll Curry Puff Star Ton Pra Ram with Tofu Garlic and Pepper with Tofu Drunken Noodles Coconut Icecream - really good! The appetizers were okay. But the entrees were just disappointing. The Pra Ram with Tofu was served on a bed of spinach with one measly broccoli and one carrot. Only the tofu was stir fried and not the vegetables. Ditto for the Garlic and Pepper with Tofu. It was just the strangest Thai food I have had. The only thing we actually liked was the coconut ice cream. It was really creamy for a vegan ice cream and delicious. Our three appetizers and three entrees came to a whopping 100$!! Not sure if we ordered the wrong dishes or came on a wrong day. But it was over priced and mediocre! And I don't see myself coming back.
google avatar

Norbert K.

Yelp
Bangkok Bay was a convenient walk from our townhouse in Del Mar. We always enjoyed the food here. The dining room is a bit over decorated. Service can be spotty. Still, we we stop here every so often for Thai food. I like their curries. Drunken Noodles is also a favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Way hai food in San Diego! Love the honey roasted duck, mango stick rice is a must!
google avatar

Yelp
Went on a Saturday night. Service was amazing, the restaurant is cozy, clean and authentic. Everything we tried, a curry, the twisted sister and chicken satay were all delicious with generous portions. The coconut ice cream is the perfect dessert.
google avatar

Beth T.

Yelp
This is located in a strip mall, as you approach the restaurant you are tantalized by small hanging lanterns and plush garden plants. Delightful to say the least. As you walk in the walls are covered in old wooden planks and there are beautiful paintings covering the walls, I felt so cozy and taken care of right from the start. We ordered family style, Green curry Pad Thai Pad see mow All delicious, Probably the best green curry I've ever had. They seem to really have it put together with production and quality of flavor to portion size, of you are looking for a Thai restaurant this Is it! 5- amazing experience! you must come and eat here! 4- loved it come try it! 3- good restaurant, if you're in the area it's a good option 2- eh 1- don't bother

Yelp
Went here again today. The pad thai was delicious and I would definitely get it again. The panang curry was spicy even though I said no episode. Would like to try the puffs appetizer, fried rice, and house salad. The lunch specials were a good deal and the food came out really fast.

Yelp
01-06-2023 Ordered: -Red Sea $24-- liked it. However, lacked that deep tasty flavor that I craved and had the last three times I dined here. Plenty of mussels, zucchini and carrots. There were 2 pieces of medium size scallops. -Seafood Po Tak $23-- flavorful. Website stated "firepot". However, clearly soup brought out in a pot, no "fire". Soup was room temperature. We went on a Friday night. It was cold out, looking forward to hot soup. Disappointed, asked our server to warm up the soup. She did. Better than when it was brought to our table, but still was not hot enough. Service: Fast and cordial.
google avatar

Jenn K.

Yelp
Pretty solid pad Thai. they have a lunch special and it's a decent portion. There's not much of a wait whenever I go
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
I really liked the decor, and I think we all enjoyed the food. The problem with my review will be that we were so focused on intense and enjoyable conversation that I was not evaluating the food. But it must have been very good else I would have noticed that!
google avatar

Alicia K.

Yelp
If it's your first time 100% try the fresh spring rolls, papaya salad, pad thai (one of the best we've had!), and red curry! The staff is always very friendly and the atmosphere is cute and authentic.
google avatar

Heather Y.

Yelp
Omg!! These summer rolls are the worst i've ever had. Rubbery rice paper was hard to chew.

carolyn c.

Yelp
Some of the best Thai food we've ever had - wish we had this place back home in New Mexico

Deborah B.

Yelp
Haven't been here for quite awhile and it is excellent! Food delicious especially papaya salad my favorite. Service the best! Som and Kevin so efficient and friendly. Ambiance very comfortable. Keep up the great work. Will be back!
google avatar

Macy M.

Yelp
Superb food! Loved the experience of an authentic Thai restaurant with great service and food. The portions are quite large and the pricing is great. Definitely a good place to dine in!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
We are going n town to visit relatives. Our relatives told us that Bangkok Bay is rated the best Thai restaurant in the area. The food proved it was true. The service was quick and helpful. We had a table in the back that was low in noise with a nice ambiance.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
A hidden gem right underneath your nose. This absolutely adorable small mom and pop vibe restaurant serves some of the best Thai food around, at least in my opinion. Great stop at lunch - they have discounted smaller portions of their famous dinner dishes, or stop by for dinner and take home delicious leftovers! Service: outstanding! Decor, looks like you stepped into Thailand, rustic garden with lots of authentic wood work and original pieces from Thailand. Food: the best around; period! Hope you get a chance to try it!!
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
Went to Bangkok Thai and had a wonderful dinner with friends. Both my wife and I shared the Beef Salad, Panang Chicken, and some Spring Rolls we shared with our friends. The food was excellent. and our servers were fun and attentive. We've been there many times and always come away saying, "This is the best North County Thai restaurant.
google avatar

Lara ..

Yelp
Excellent across the board -- food, service and ambiance. Enjoyed lunch with someone who lived in Thailand and never would have discovered it otherwise.
google avatar

Kayiona G.

Yelp
I absolutely love the atmosphere. It is so calming and I like the dim lighting. The workers are very sweet. I got the twisted sister, crying tiger, and bk fried rice. My favorite dish will always be the twisted sister. I would highly recommend coming here. I went around 5:45pm and it was already getting crowded. This is definitely a local favorite.
google avatar

Marla M.

Yelp
Went for an early lunch here today. I've always loved this place. Have come for dinner countless times. However, today was subpar in several areas. Is this place going downhill? The soup with the lunch special was basically mildly flavored water with some raw vegetable thrown in. Neither me nor my lunch companion took more than two spoonfuls. The Pad See Ew was bland and just didn't taste great. And the kicker...I spent the rest of the day with a stomach ache and running to the bathroom. I missed out on an evening at the beach with my family. I don't think I'll be returning to this restaurant any time soon. So disappointed.

Mark W.

Yelp
What a fantastic find, excellent food and service. would definitely eat here again!!!!!!!
google avatar

Enrique G.

Yelp
A good Thai, good value, good Food and Good attitude. It is a bit blah but it works, you go there have a good meal and pay accordingly. Not sire I'd make this my favorite but definitely will Come back for more.

Yelp
Absolute wonderful hole in the wall restaurant. Everything is super delicious and the wait staff are excellent. If you love Thai food I highly recommend giving it a try.
google avatar

Jamie J.

Yelp
I had such a nice experience with the staff. I was traveling for for work and eating alone and the staff made me feel comfortable and made a great recommendation on the food choice. It's a short walk from the Marriott and will be remembered for next time I'm in the area.

Katie ..

Yelp
Amazing food and great portions! We like a little more spice but when we requested spicier next time they delivered. Hope you try it!

Christina Z.

Yelp
Have tried four different dishes from this place, and every single one was delicious. Pad thai (really creamy), chicken satay (so yummy), pad see ew (super fresh veggies) and kow sai noodles (INCREDIBLE). The portions are GIANT and the dishes are piping hot and delectable! Most definitely will be continuing to come to Bangkok Bay!
google avatar

Emme F.

Yelp
This is my go-to take out spot! Every gathering or date night my first request is Bangkok Bay. Hands down the best Thai food in the area. Definitely call ahead for take out and make a reservation for dine in because the line is always out the door. The Kow Sai Noodles are my new favorite. They have a yummy crunch and are a great combo of curry and noodles. Highly recommend!
google avatar

JiaJia T.

Yelp
Located in a shopping plaza, half hidden by the greeneries, which make it feel more tropical. The service was super friendly and the pad Thai and massaman curry were both on point although the flavor was a bit on the sweeter side. Lunch specials were also a good value.

Aaron P.

Yelp
I wish I could give more stars. Our waitress named Om went above and beyond. First, she brought a table outside for us so we could sit with our dogs. Second, she brought a treat for the dogs. Third, she made time during the busy dinner rush to come check on us and the dogs. This was arguably the best service we have ever received. And by the way- the food was fantastic. They have made a lifelong customer. Thank you for a wonderful evening
