Best International Restaurants in Ferndale, Michigan - Eater Detroit

"Long a jewel of Ferndale, Bangkok Cafe is consistently excellent and their prices have remained reasonable and the service stellar. The menu is lengthy but is classic Thai: curries, pad cashew, pad thai, fried rice, rice noodles, served with a choice of beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, crabmeat, or scallop. Mind your spice level. Entrees are enough to serve two." - Monica Williams

Delicious chicken fried rice. The pad Thai was also very good (but the chicken fried rice was better!) The atmosphere is kinda strange, it seems like there’s a lot of boxes that are not put away but I’m guessing they use the main dining room for storage since you cannot eat inside if you want full service. They just don’t offer it. The food was ready very fast (10 minutes) and the portions were huge and lasted at least two meals. Paid around $40 for all the food pictured, including the tip. I would definitely order from here again.

Google
I decided to try this place on my lunch break, tempted by the rave reviews and my craving for Thai food. I ordered my usual Thai dish—chicken pad Thai with a side of coconut curry sauce. The meal was decent and I’d order from here again. You get a great amount of food for the price which is a plus. Additionally, the staff was very helpful, especially since it was my first time ordering/trying this restaurant. 8/10.

Google
I love Thai food, and this is definitely in my top 5 for metro Detroit! I ordered the Pad Se Ew with shrimp, and it came out literally less than 5 minutes after I ordered. They only do carry out right now but there is seating available. My food was super hot and SO good! I didn’t love the spring roll but I just prefer the smaller version. I parked in the lot next door for $1.25/hr

Google
This is by far the best Thai restaurant in the Detroit area. Everything is affordable and they give you large tasty portions. Their recipe and quality of the food hasn’t changed at all since I ate here as a kid. Ordered the chicken and shrimp fried curry. Spicy and yummy as always. Wish there were more restaurants like this around. 10/10 ;)

Google
Best Thai food hands down 🙌🏽 I always get the pad prik with shrimp and chicken. Worth it for the price. I love my food spicy and they give it to me spicy when I ask. I just wish you could get noodles with some entrees. The lady I spoke with said I couldn't even pay an up charge for noodles 😖

Google
Take-out and "self-serve" only. But the food is terrific, and has been for a long time. I ate here when I was a teenager, and I made a trip from where I live in Windsor just to have some Prince Chicken.

Google
This place had very good reviews so we gave it a try, we're out-of-towners. Being vegan and vegetarian we were able to order a couple of items off the menu, and they were excellent. Our friend who is not vegetarian had gotten there before us and finished his meal already and he gave us a tip - their dishes are really, really hot and spicy! So we ordered a four out of ten on the heat scale, and he was right! The waitress said that was a medium level, but boy was it HOT! My eyes were watering and nose running - but it was so good I couldn't stop eating. Huge heaping portion, enough to take home for a second meal. Yes, the decor of the place isn't high-class, but who the heck cares when the food is this good! I'd give this place 5 stars if they had more vegan choices on the menu, that's my only critique.

Google
been going here for 40 years I'm 50 now, i have worked in 3 different THAI restaurants for a period of 16 years, this ones still the best, fried rice is amazing, I get beef extra hot , last time the beef was kinda tough, so this time I got vegetable, minus bamboo and chestnuts, it was slappin straight off the hook, still number one in my book, ordered turned around to get water , sir your foods ready literally 2 minutes , wow 🍚🍤🍲🍚

Yelp
My family has been eating here almost weekly (but at least twice a month) for more than a decade now and it is always fantastic. The Pad Ped is to die for and something I used to think about constantly when I briefly moved away. I've tried to order similar dishes elsewhere just to see what's up and none are even close to as tasty! There are a lot of complaints on here about the service but if you've been there more than once you'll see that it is incredibly busy. Everyone who works here is clearly moving as fast as they can to get everyone food as fast as they can... cut them a bit of slack people! Sorry they don't have time to ask you how your day was when there are clearly a thousand other things going on at the same time!

Yazzy J.

Yelp
The food is amazingly good, in my opinion, I always get the chicken pad Thai or the shrimp, I totally recommend going, but I can only speak for me.

Yelp
This place used to be our absolute favorite for decades ! But they have gotten so cheap and unconcerned with customer service that the dining room looks like a storage closet and you can't even have someone serve you anymore. We saw the state of the place and walked out. Very disappointing. it seems like people in the city have given up on human interactions and concern with cleanliness what customer service, otherwise a place like this couldn't exist.
google avatar

Elaine W.

Yelp
Very good restaurant! Good food, huge portion and very reasonable pricing. Not the best Thai food, but for the price, really can't ask for more. Also no dine in service, but can order take out and eat there. Important to know their spicy level is outrageously spicy! For someone who loves spicy food, the medium level was intolerable. I actually asked for my Pad See wew to be remade to mild and they kindly accommodated!

Yelp
Got the green curry and the chili curry. Let me warn you first and foremost how spicy this place was. The chili curry, beef, with no added spice, is INEDIBLY spicy. Beef tastes like spicy beef Jerky which I was not anticipating. Had one bite and knew it was not for me. UNPLEASANTLY spicy and I consider myself able to take spice. Had this replaced with green curry with shrimp. Not too creamy. Not too flavorful. Not too unique. It was made WITHIN 5 minutes of taking back the previous dish. So speed was good but there is something about a dish made in 5 minutes that makes you question things. It's thai. It's spicy. It meets minimum standards. Ambiance is self serve (bc understaffed). Don't think I'll return. Just not special.

Yelp
Opened up my food "chicken & shrimp fried rice....they don't clean the shrimp...I would've never thought that a well established business wouldn't clean out of the shrimp ‍

Yelp
9-18-2024 I went and the young lady in the front attitude was nasty. She wouldn't speak up and on top of that was shaking her head when I said what I didn't want in my second dinner which was shrimp fried rice. I get the food home and eat it was throwing up in 15 minutes do not eat here. Food was disgusting !
google avatar

Vivian D.

Yelp
Bangkok cafe has some delicious food. I have never had a bad meal here. But their bathroom is too disgusting for me. I can't go there ever since I saw the restroom.
google avatar

Joey B.

Yelp
Not quite like bangkok96 by my house, but yhe coconut soup is amazing. Love ordering here when I'm at the cigar lounge next door.

Stylesby H.

Yelp
The food is excellent and budget friendly and everything is always made to perfection whenever I order my food extra spicy. The atmosphere is very peaceful.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the food and it was well priced, fresh and delicious. I had never tried tom kha gai and loved it- not spicy as I worried. The restaurant has several spacious and clean tables to eat at, it was very uncrowded and we recieved our food quickly; however it is small so on more busy evenings I wouldn't count on a table. The girl at the counter was nice and friendly as well. Overall loved it, may go back during the week I'm in town.

Yelp
Great Food .VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!! Basically this restaurant is primarily a carry out restaurant. The phone is always busy or it constantly ring and the we they pick up they are rude.
google avatar

Allen K.

Yelp
My how things have changed here. The was really good at one time. Worst customer service ever. I said hello three times and the cashier never responded. The Tom Yum soup was too salty to eat. The pad Thai had no flavor. The inside looks like it has not been cleaned or remodeled in years. I will never return. So sad.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
This place has Great food and Great service. We ordered this yesterday and finished it all the sad part is that I'll be bk again today.

Yelp
Bangkok Cafe runs like a well-oiled machine. First of all...shrimps chips...love em! They are available pre-made at the counter along with a few other snacks. I get the same thing each time I stop in for a carryout, so I can only speak to the Pad See Ew. I've had this dish at many restaurants and theirs makes my "top 5". The dish is always consistent. I add shrimp and extra broccoli. Yes the see ew here comes with broccoli. I've not had broccoli in the dish at other restaurants. Anyway, you can order your dish with a range of spiciness. I'm a wimp, so I always order mild. The noodles are usually cooked on par, the shrimp are fresh and plump and the broccoli is cooked medium with a little crunch. I love the bean sprouts and egg, they definitely top the dish perfectly. I also order the spring rolls which are good. The ladies working the cash register are definitely about their business. Don't go in there unsure about why you're there and CALL AHEAD...the place is busy with a steady flow of customers from open to close. There are a scant few dining tables, however they're currently only open for carryout. Oh, and parking is paid on the street and lot.

Yelp
WONDERFUL food! This restaurant is a Ferndale institution. I've visited them over decades and the food is fresh, fast and flavorful. Great portion size for the price. The fresh rolls are exceptional and their fried spring rolls load in the vegetables and filling. I always get the chicken curry, the pad Thai is great and their menu offers a plethora of vegetarian choices. One note, they give you a choice of your "spice" level - mild medium or hot. Their spice is intense....I love a strong kick to my food but here I always order MILD (fyi) I have to give props to their staff, they are ALWAYS busy and they deliver your meal in record time. STRONG recommendation for this business.
google avatar

Mista D.

Yelp
Good food overall, though I've only tried one specific thing from there, which is the shrimp fried rice.
google avatar

Marissa C.

Yelp
I decided to give this place a try the other day after a long week of work with no motivation to cook food for myself. First, I think the pricing is quite fair for the amount of food that you get. I placed a phone order and my food was ready in the actual amount of time given so great service. Overall the noodles were excellent! They were saucy and had all the right flavors. Warning: this can get very spicy! Think of fire ramen as the marker for medium level of spicy. I enjoy it but I know some people may not. Overall, great experience!

Samantha S.

Yelp
Food is always great! Portions are large and prices are small. Their vegetable delight is my favorite in metro detroit!

Rae B.

Yelp
Always delicious and great customer service. Wish they were open more................................they are one of my favorites I just don't go often much anymore because of their weird hours and closed during random days
google avatar

Dindada D.

Yelp
Takeout place is "busy"! I'll be taking them back as I always do! I suggest you call ahead, but the wait isn't very long.

Kay D.

Yelp
I'm here often and the food and service is consistent and fast. No frills but shareable portions at a fair price. I miss the pre Covid experience, but I still give it 5 stars.
google avatar

Ashley N.

Yelp
I actually stumbled upon this place because I was trying to go to a different Bangkok, but realized I placed my order here and ended it up liking it even more. I have only had their shrimp fried rice which is a huge portion that can be eaten over days. I have also had their sizzling rice soup, chicken wings, fresh rolls, and spring roll. Everything has been excellent. They are also very inexpensive. I have already been back a few times as once I first stumbled upon this gem.
google avatar

Mae C.

Yelp
Literally so delicious! The portions are huge and everything is what you'd expect of a fresh Thai takeout experience. I really like how they use big pieces of veggies in their dishes. The chicken satay is also huge and the best I've had in the Royal Oak / Ferndale area.

Jospeh N.

Yelp
This has been my favorite Thai restaurant for years! They have the best Thai food around I stop trying other Thai restaurants because nothing compares to this place!!!

Teresa B.

Yelp
I give this place a one star not because of their food but their customer service which in my opinion is equally important. They didn't put my spices in my carry out bag on more than one occasion. On Apr 3rd I went in to pick up a $38.00 order and ask if I could be accommodated an extra spice and I was told NO it's .50cents and then asked what about the times you didn't give it to me. The person in charge said "do you want it or not " My response was no I shouldn't have to pay for something you owe me. Mine you the spice is equal to a teaspoon in size.I spend money with this place on a continuous basis. Now I'm thinking they are deliberately leaving the spice out to make sure they have enough to make an extra .50cents on customers. Count your change this place is starting to act greedy. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Bangkok 9 Mile in Ferndale.
google avatar

Stacey B.

Yelp
It's very difficult to find a good Thai place, but Bangkok is it for Ferndale! I work in Detroit, but near Ferndale, and was craving Thai. I tried Bangkok due to the reviews, and it did not disappoint! Indoor dining is closed for now, but carry-out is available. I ordered a spring roll and Pad Prik (#13). I also had a hard time dining an updated menu, so I grabbed one of those too. The food was delicious! Their spring rolls are a decent size and filled with a ton of cellophane noodles & veggies. If you have the opportunity, check this place out!
google avatar

Ahren S.

Yelp
Generational family ran and operated, this Thai place will get you whatever you want in just 5 minutes. No joke, the food quality is not anything special but to be able to knock out any flavor on their menu in 300 seconds, pipping hot and large portions...that's 5 stars in my book
google avatar

Khori C.

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai restaurant. Their Fried rice is the best. I get chicken fried rice or chicken and shrimp fried rice. They have the best spring rolls. Pre-covid you could dine in with wait staff, now you can only do carry-outs. They will allow you to sit at a table with your carryout but no refills for drinks. You will have to pay for another drink which sucks.
google avatar

Jodi F.

Yelp
Unfortunately I always forget to take pictures of the food -- when the Tom Yum soup arrives with its multitude of fresh veggies and pieces of chicken, I grab a spoon and dig in. Then I think... "I forgot to take a picture for yelp." So enjoy the basically devoured soup picture. This soup is Incredible. Next -- KISS Me. I'm not asking you to kiss me, especially after I eat this dish (appropriately named) -- chicken with fresh garlic. Oh my. I add some broccoli which goes perfect. I did remember to take a picture this time. But not until I scooped it onto my plate. Oops. Anyway - this is one of the best Thai dishes I've ever had. And did I mention for three of us - two entrees with rice, an appetizer and two soups - $25. So affordable too. You'll love it!
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
I have been a long time fan of Bangkok Cafe. Pad Thai chicken with Shrimp medium spice is perfect EVERY.Dang. TIME. I have no negative remarks. LOVE THIS SPOT. Even to fight Ferndale traffic, construction and parking is worth it. For COVID-19, they are limiting carry-out to call ahead only. Then entry into the foyer one person at a time. Kudos! They have hand sanitizer and notices posted.
google avatar

Tariq M.

Yelp
I love the food here, but they hardly answer the phone. I have to call about 10 times to get a answer or I'll just show up in person to place a order cause I want to avoid calling all together. With that being said, having to put up with all that, the food, it's worth it. If I can give them 1 piece of advice, FIX THE PHONE SYSTEM!!
google avatar

Harold P.

Yelp
The best takeout Thai food in the area bar none. They have been excellent for decades.
google avatar

Stefanie D.

Yelp
One of the best Thai restaurants in the area. I would have preferred my curry veggies with shrimp in a separate container than the rice. I will request next time. Great tasting and quality. Thanks
google avatar

Jesus E.

Yelp
Definitely a great option for Thai food! This low key, hole in the wall restaurant has a bit of charm to it despite looking like it has seen better days. The pad see ewe with chicken I had was so delicious! The noodles were a bit smaller than the flat and wide noodles I'm used to but it tasted great which is all that matters. I got it medium plus in terms of spiciness and it was perfect for me. The noodles were perfectly coated in the delicious sauce making each bite a joy! Would have preferred Chinese broccoli with it but not a deal breaker. Portions were huge and I had left overs as a pretty big lunch the next day! I was really impressed and happy with the customer service. The woman who served us was was very friendly and sweet!
google avatar

Carmen J.

Yelp
the go to Thai spot for my family ! always on point :) Had the vegetable curry today , the flavor was great !
google avatar

Sheila M.

Yelp
I used to love this place until my son attempted to get carry out twice and they harassed him for having a handicap. He has gotten food from there every week for the past 5 yrs and when he asks if they can bring food out to his car because he's on crutches and can barely walk and carry food they ridicule and make fun of him. WTF this community supports you through co-vid and has supported you for many many years and this is how your going to treat someone when their down? We will never be back to your restaurant again. SHAME ON YOU!!
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible food. Great portions, at a great price. Rare that anyone answers the phone for call ahead orders.
google avatar

Ken J.

Yelp
The food here has always been my favorite. I live in Canton now but anytime I'm in the area, it's a must have. For over 20 years this was our go to place for Thai food. Always. We've never been disappointed with the quality or portions. When we could go inside to order or eat, the staff was always friendly courteous and very pleasant. I was so glad to be able to enjoy their great food again even in these difficult Covid times.
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
Came here the other day for an early dinner and I have to say the pad Thai was probably the largest portion I've ever received from a Thai restaurant. The sauce was on the lighter side and didn't have crazy depth of flavor but it was palatable. They were also generous on the shrimp and they weren't small either which was a big plus! The drunken noodles here had basil in it which made the dish overly floral and changed the flavor profile of the standard dish for my unadventurous dining partner. The noodles were the same as the pad Thai when we've order this dish anywhere else it's always the wide flat noodles (the kind you get in pad seew). We also tried the chicken fried rice which was hella bland. Almost zero flavor going on in that dish so after one bite we didn't touch it again. Overall decent- the pad Thai was the best out of the three dishes ordered but there's much better out there in my opinion!
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
Had eaten here a a couple of times before in the past, since my best friend lives in Ferndale, but went with another friend a while back and ordered my usual go to Pad Thai. It took a bit longer than usual, but then again it was a busy night. My friend had Pad Prik with beef and I got the shrimp Pad Thai. I ate less than half of my dish as it wasn't sitting well with me. I left the rest behind as it had left a bad taste in my mouth. Needless to say I was sick the rest of the night and it was something either with the shrimp being bad or eggs or the sprouts. I will not be back as my stomach feels awful when I think about how sick I got from the food last I was at this place. Maybe it was a fluke but I can't go back there.
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
Been looking for a Thai place near the Detroit area. We drove by this place and a friend recommended it and my family decided to try it for lunch. My husband got the Drunken Noodles with beef at medium spice and I got the Pad Thai with chicken with no spice so I could share with my child. Right off the bat, the portions are huge! Each plate for like $10 it is totally worth it. DPad Thai is usually my go-to and it was alright at Bangkok Cafe. It was a little bland for my taste. I could taste all the flavors there it just wasn't elevated as much as I would like. I wonder if I got mild spice if that would have changed it at all. The Drunken Noodles on the other hand were really tasty! Medium spice def has a kick but not overwhelming! It was very flavorful. If I was to go back, even though Pad Thai is my fave Thai noodle dish, at Bangkok Cafe, I'd go with the Drunken Noodle between the two!

Tamara B.

Yelp
This is the best place for Thai food in the area. The service is usually good. A subpar on the ambiance but the food makes up for it.
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
This restaurant brings back memories for my boyfriend and I. Used to come on dates here all the time when we lived not too far away. I'm glad we came for lunch. For starters we ordered soups on this cold, snowy day. Soups were tom yam gai and tom kha gai. Tom yam gai was sour with plentiful veggies and chicken. Tom kha gai was with sweet coconut milk and chicken. My boyfriend ordered his original favorite chicken pad thai medium spice and I ordered my favorite chicken gang gai with mild plus spice. Service is always great! Love how the restaurant is in the heart of downtown Ferndale!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
From what i remember, Bangkok Cafe is one of the 1st places to offer Thai food in the area. So many years later, it is still my favorite. I no longer live in the area, but this is 1 of my first stops when visiting. Be advised that this is a no frills restauraunt, loud with basic decor and uncomfortable seating. Go for the food, not the ambiance, and you will be pleased.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
We've are vegetarian (not Vegan) and have been coming here for years. We always do carry out. We've tried many other Thai restaurants and many are very good but Bangkok Cafe has consistently great flavor and very reasonable price. In addition they are super fast. Usually the food is ready in 10 minutes so we just call it in, drive over, and pick it up. I don't think we've ever had it take more than 20 minutes and that is rare (if Ferndale is going crazy with some event). We enjoy the Tofu Pad Thai and the #7 vegetable curry. Also love the Fried Tofu side with its tasty sweet peanut green onion sauce. If you are looking for fancy, this will not be the place. The menu, while it has many choices, is classic simple Thai, never changes. But if you are looking for a very quick Thai meal that you can count on, this is the place. The people are great too and MAN do they work hard.

Ryan K.

Yelp
I don't understand how this place does it. The food.. is amazing, the service is great. Priced very affordable and is always ready by the time I get there and served with a smile. Every time I visit I swear the food gets better. The chicken fried rice I order has never disappointed. This place is so good I've started what I call 'Thai food Friday' I swing by every week or other week and get a big plate of fried rice and it sets the tone for the weekend. Thank you to all its employees, the cooks, everyone involved. (I'd take a photo but I inhaled my dinner already)
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
We used to come here all the time when we lived closer, but we "rediscovered" this spot tonight as it suddenly became convenient again, and you know what? It was great! Fast, affordable, huge portions, delicious. I think we're back to making this our go-to Thai spot, it's been challenging to find someplace consistently good.
google avatar

Yelp
They have one phone and never answers the phone. I came up there around 8:34 and the door was closed. Penny came out and said the cooks were gone for today and they only have one phone line so they can't answer all the calls. As a business if you know this is an issue with people getting thru and trying to spend their money with your business why wouldn't you improve your phone system it's 2022. They was so rude Penny walked off and locked the door on me cause I advise I was going to do a review on this business. If you close at 9 and a customer walks in a 8:35 more order should be taken. Restrictions is usually with call in orders. The service was unacceptable and very Rude.
