The 17 Essential Restaurants in Columbia, Home of the University of Missouri

"Whether you’re ordering for takeout or dine in, head to Bangkok, downtown on Cherry Street, the go-to place for Thai food in Columbia. The restaurant features traditional Thai dishes like frog legs, phat see ew, pad thai, and coconut curry. But be warned: Dishes come in a range of spice levels, up to level five, and the kitchen will not remake your order if you overestimate your spice tolerance." - Chloe Konrad

Return trip to this delicious restaurant. Order freshly cooked. Menu has no pictures available only descriptions of choices. Ask waittress for favorites if new to this restaurant very helpful waitress. Our party of seven had variety of dishes. I am no expert to explain dishes. Drunken selection with chicken was superb. Their signature Phai Thai dish with PB in was plentiful and delicious, can never go wrong with this selection. Had sauce on side . The chicken was very moist in all our dishes! Our service was great and no wait to be seated which was unusual as this is a busy establishment. Recommend this restaurant for quiet, comfortable atmosphere & delicious entrees amongst friends. Family. We will return in near. Future. Our visit was 4/15/25

Google
my girlfriend and I had dinner here recently, and we loved it! everything tasted very fresh, and the pineapple fried rice was some of the best I've ever had...they made it absurdly spicy just like I requested! service and atmosphere were excellent as well....they were busy, and we were up on the second level, but our server still came up to check on us often. we'll definitely be back next time we're in Columbia!

Yamini Bellam

Google
Green Curry Lo Mein is my favorite so far. It’s so flavorful.I would suggest getting spice level of 3 for even people who can tolerate spice.

Google
Our main entrees were fine, but our appetizer order of crab rangoons were raw twice, stretchy wonton wrapper. The first time, our waitress said, "oh yeah, that's wrong, I'll put another order in for you." The second time, they came out the exactly same way, still with cold middles and stretchy wonton dough, and she said that's how they always come out and she won't be able to take them off the bill (not that I had asked for that). Still, wild we paid $8 and didn't get to have a single crab rangoon.

Had a take out order. I’ve been eating at Bangkok Gardens since they opened up on 9th street. Never have I had poor quality of food until now! WHAT HAPPENED?? Does John not work there anymore? We couldn’t get shrimp as a protein-without an explanation. I love love this restaurant, but was so very disappointed in the quality of food, portion size etc. definitely not what I expected and I’ve enjoyed in 20+ years. I live 45 minutes away and this is the go to place we always get food from when we’re in the area to eat.

Google
On the expensive side, and portions per dish are very inconsistent. Village rolls were nice and large, but dripping with insane amounts of oil and we couldn't tell if they had given us vegetable rolls or chicken. It was just a ton of very bland cabbage. Demon chicken was a good level of heat for the authentic thai level, and had a nice smoky char on the veggies, but not much other seasoning to round it out. Serving was surprisingly small for an $11 dish, and while they were generous with the large charred veggies there were 5 pieces of tough chicken total. Wife got drunken noodles with chicken which was much better seasoned, if maybe a little too sweet. Portions were larger for this one, but again it was mostly vegetables, with a few pieces of rubbery chicken. Not bad all together, but not worth returning for the price for the servings.

This has been my favorite restaurant for over 20 years. The food is incredible and the service is fantastic. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This is a regular date night for my girlfriend and I. It is a bit pricier at dinner but lunch has a great appetizer and drink combo. Service is consistently good but sometimes the wait is slightly longer when busy. Ambience is very cool and good for date nights. Portions are huge, I will be returning.
google avatar

Brianna R.

Yelp
The wait staff was attentive and the location is good. However, the food was bland and there was no difference in the Pad Thai spice level between no spice and medium-hot spice. The price was also expensive for the portion sizes. There are better Thai restaurants in Columbia.

Sophia A.

Yelp
Delicious! Split the Thai-phoon appetizer platter and a fried rice dish. Both were excellent. Highly recommend the appetizer because you get to try just the right amount of everything. Service was super fast! Lovely place to eat.

Yelp
Very good Asian cuisine, easy to find, great staff that is helpful and polite. Very cool decor

Yelp
Very disappointed! Food was not spicy at all. We ordered a three spice level. The food was also barely warm and swimming in water/oil, no sign of Curry. Very small portions and way overpriced! Stay away!
google avatar

Rebecca I.

Yelp
Good Thai food for the area, but a little on the pricey side for not being as authentic. The food was tasty and there are a lot of options as well as spice levels. Service was fast and prompt, however we were charged for a meal we didn't order.
google avatar

Karl B.

Yelp
Grrrrr. Jason charged me for an extra meal we didn't even order. My date looked at the receipt and pointed it out and it was removed. Not a good look so be certain to check your receipt with a fine-tuned comb. As far as the food goes it was both mediocre and pricy. The fried pork dumplings was the highlight of my meal - those were good. I also had the Phat Thai which was edible but nothing special. The portion size was less than giving and for $16 it wasn't worth it. Also, I had the Ginger Limeade as a drink and was dismayed to learn there were no refills. Had I known this I wouldn't have gotten it as it was full of ice and $4. I mean, give me a break. They don't offer soda refills and then they magically charge me for an extra meal noone ordered. Not a good look. I wasn't impressed and I won't be back. There are other places in Columbia that have better reviews and have more potential to be better than this place.

Hillary H.

Yelp
I ordered the Pad Thai and coconut curry, both with chicken, for take out. It was $39 for two dishes! The pad Thai was good but the coconut curry was BARELY edible. It was full of large pieces of chicken (which I ended up giving to my cat) and lots of bamboo and very liquidy curry sauce.

Yelp
Got drunk and dump'd while at Bangkok Gardens. I mean who knew drunken noodles and dumplings paired so well. *** I was in Columbia for a department workshop and we decided to have lunch at Bangkok Gardens. I highly recommend the Phat See Eiu or Demon Chicken. Both are busting with flavor and drenched in spice if you like things HOT, but you can control that with ranges from mild to Volcanic

Yelp
Found this place totally by accident. We were going to go to a different place but it was closed so we came here instead - beautiful accident. We got the lunch special - food was flavorful, nice portion, and price was decent. Where they truly shine is how they cater to food allergies. They are so good at making sure you get what you want and in a way that is most palatable for you. I'd highly recommend.

Gaurav K.

Yelp
The Bangkok Gardens is a wonderful place to be, and the food is delicious. But I just wanted to note on the service, one of the servers was very bland. and she did such a mechanical job that it looked unreal, it was one of the important days when me and my daughter went for a lunch, and this server had very mean expressions. it was hard to get her attention as well.
google avatar

Shana M.

Yelp
Demon chicken level 3, drunkin noodles with chicken and rice noodles, crab ragoons! It all slaps, it's bussin! Thai ice tea, ginger limeade, lemongrass lemonade, so delicious! This is one of my very favorite places to eat in Columbia. The freeze dried candy is also a fun treat.

Yelp
Best coconut curry ever located in downtown columbia mo. The restaurant itself has quiet the aesthetic. But no really try the coconut curry.
google avatar

Shay D.

Yelp
I have been trying to find decent pad thai, at-least to my liking. This place delivered. Someone told me about it and so I have been at-least 3 or 4 times now . I always end up getting the pad thai haha. I just love pad thai and have no tried anything else. The thai is pretty close to what I want and like. I love their chicken rolls and the crab rangoon sauce. Ooo lets not even mention, the thai tea. O baby.
google avatar

Mia Z.

Yelp
bangkok gardens is a more high end thai restaurant in columbia. we got the pad thai and oh brother it was HOTthe crab rangoon was pretty good but didn't have that much filling. also lunch specials are mid and i wouldn't really consider them "specials" because everything was still really expensive...thai tea milk was excellent :)
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered pad see ew and got rice noodles covered in McDonald's sweet n' sour sauce . My friend ordered pad Thai- it was white .

Yelp
I'm sorry, I don't review hardly ever. Tonight we had the following carry out: Pad Thai w/shrimp Fried Siam Village Rolls #22 Red w/ Shrimp level 4 The rolls were ok. We each took about 3 bites of our respective meals and then tried each other's. Not good. Maybe it was because it was near closing, maybe it's acceptable in the Midwest with limited exposure or options, but simply not good. Not good, but still expensive. I'm not a food critic and don't have artful words for why, but I don't know a time in my life or my wife's where either of us hasn't eaten a meal we paid for. We ended up running to Taco Bell.... I'm sorry for the bad review, but unacceptable. Here's some points to improve on... Dry rice Mush noodles Over use of MSG flavoring Shrimp were off (both dishes) Flavor that was extant, was off putting. To the business, good luck. To the customer, manage expectations.

Yelp
Pretty much as good as I remember it--used to come here back in my ol' university days, at the old 9th street location. Flavors are great, ingredients are fresh, and the chef is no less sadistic when it comes to the spice level. I like spicy foods, and ordered 4 (out of 5) spice level, and I'm enjoying it, but in retrospect, probably should have gone with a 3. This is right on the border of intensely hot & flavorful, and taste-bud destroying, brain-melting "what was I thinking?" hot. Flavors behind the heat are spot-on, though. Would definitely recommend--but tread carefully.

Yelp
While traveling I found this amazing spot to get some delicious food and drinks. The staff are very knowledgeable about the menu and are extremely helpful with suggestions. On the suggestion of Jason I got the number 9 with tofu spiced lvl 3. Perfect amount of heat mixed with the veggies and rice made a perfect dinner after driving all day. Masks are required so covid is still a thing when you read this, being yours with you. You will not be disappointed eating here.

Yelp
I had high expectations of Bangkok Gardens going in, and while the atmosphere/decor was nice, my meal was a bit underwhelming. I ordered the coconut curry (level 3/5 spice), and the flavor was pretty bland. Furthermore, the curry consisted of probably 80% bamboo with only a small portion of chicken. Coconut curry is a typical order for me at Thai restaurants, so I am pretty familiar with how it is usually prepared. That being said, my curry was sub par. I asked for a sauce to add flavor to my curry and the waiter brought peanut sauce, which was nice of him, but it didn't help much. Given my experience with my meal, I would've given the restaurant a 3 star review. However, my boyfriend enjoyed his meal (fried pork with sweet and sour) and because the restaurant setting itself was nice and the service was good, I would probably go back and try something else from the menu.

Vona K.

Yelp
Truly the most unsatisfying meal we have had in years. $17 for a watery, tasteless Tum Yum soup we had to fill with soy sauce just so it had any flavor, and another $17 for very mediocre, small portioned red curry in which we could not even identify a curry taste. We walked over to Pizza Tree after and ate a slice each because we were still hungry $46 later. If you want Thai, go to Tiger Chef on Rangeline.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by everyone I asked for a good Thai restaurant. For a Thai food lover and trying it from many different cities/places, this was just okay. *But for columbia this was the best Thai food I had here. The staff was friendly. The happy hour drinks were good and lasted till 8pm.

Annie F.

Yelp
Great lunch special! $17 for app, food, and drink! Loved the crab Rangoon and pad Thai

Yelp
Someone please give your wait staff a xanex. We came in as a party of 3 on Saturday night at 7:50. Host was just chilling at the bar, seemed confused on how to seat people. Our waitress was a MESS from beginning to end. Asked us to repeat our order 20 min after ordering, running around like a maniac, not getting our orders right, not bringing what we asked for, literally SNAPPING at us for asking for chopsticks. I have never seen such poor service in terms of lack of attention and hospitality. Skip the pad Thai. Doesn't taste like any pad Thai I've ever had before. The curries were much better - like other yelp reviewers mentioned, coconut curry is the way to go. Oh, and if you get a drink, don't expect to get it. Brought out the wrong check. Need I say more?
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Came here on a date night not really knowing what to expect. The manager greeted us, we looked at the menu and decided to stay. I ordered the Moo Taud and my girlfriend ordered the Coconut Curry. Each were with a level 3 spiciness. While my dish had plenty of food and great flavor. The Coconut Curry was rather bland and didn't have much meat in it. We asked for some peanut sauce to maybe enhance the flavor somehow and it didn't do much. For the price, you get a great amount of food, but you might need to be selective on the dishes you pick.

Misty M.

Yelp
We had lunch here with friends and the Drunken Noodles were fantastic! The Crab Rangoon was the best I've had!

Yelp
It takes me just over an hour to drive to Columbia, but the food is worth every minute of highway time. I usually order the dumpling soup, which is a variation of hot and sour soup with some (pork / vegetarian) dumplings tossed in. I usually order the spicy at level three which is a solid heat you'll feel for quite some time. The level four is native Thai and the level five is volcanic and comes with a warning/disclaimer. But the level three will give you a nice burn that keeps on giving the next day (if you take my meaning). The service is always friendly and prompt. I received my soup ina timely manner and in a bowl large enough to bathe in. The spice from the soup is an instant kick the moment your lips touch the broth and there is another spicy kick from the lime juice when you swallow. It is the perfect combination of HOT and SOUR. The ingredients in the soup are fresh and bountiful. While my personal fave is the mushrooms, there plenty of other delicious items like the dumplings and the Bok Choy. Steamed rice is served with the dish and is a nice compliment to be added to the soup or kept separately to cleanse your palate. The serving size is perfect and I usually can't eat the final few spoonfuls, but completely worth your time.

Yelp
I absolutely love Thai food and this place definitely didn't disappoint. Everything tastes fantastic, the service is great, and the atmosphere inside the restaurant is lovely. I really enjoyed the Thom Kha Kai, a coconut milk soup with ginger, galangal, kaffir leaves, lemongrass, onions, potatoes, tamarind, and chicken, and the friends that I visited with adored the Phat See Eiu (Drunken Noodles) and Coconut Curry. There are definitely Thai restaurants out there, but Bangkok Gardens is probably one of the best selections I've seen in Columbia.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch while traveling from KC to STL and it was worth the drive from the highway. I'd been wanting to go back since I moved out of CoMo many years ago. The service was polite and the food was prompt. I wouldn't order the crab Rangoon (app special) again, they were small and too crispy for my liking. The chai iced tea and my #13 were great. Spice level #3 wasn't that hot. The lunch special is two free eggs rolls when you order a drink, so I really didn't need the Rangoon. The pork egg rolls were outstanding. I haven't had anything like it. The outside was more crispy than I'm used to, the inside was hot, fresh and loosely rolled. It was good with and without the sauce.

Yelp
I used to live this place I have been eating here since it was a small join up on 9th. However in recent years it's just not what it was. Not sure if ownership has changed or if the owner got tired of running his business. When you place an order, if you can because they are ALWAYS closed, they act pissed that you are bothering them to make Thai food in a Resturant. The portions have gotten smaller and price has gone up and this was before COVID and inflation. Their menu is unique but this place has really stumbled in a community with quickly changing clientele (college kids) they have stopped Carey g about returning customers.
google avatar

Enrique S.

Yelp
Our table of 4 was a mixed bag. Two people really enjoyed their meal and 2 didn't. We got there at 6:00 on a Friday evening and the place was about 1/3 full on the main level and empty upstairs. The place was clean. The wait staff was attentive. The phat thai was not good - we got one with peanut sauce and one without. One with pork and one with chicken, two different heat levels (2 and 3)...the both came out with chicken for the meat and they mixed up our orders and couldn't tell which was which. The Tiger Claw was good though as were the spring rolls. Maybe we caught them at a bad time...I will try this place again.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
Been here twice for takeout in the last month. Yes get the #7 ground beef. Their spice level is hotter than mine. 2 is plenty spicy. Thai tea good (hard to eff that up!).
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
First, let me say that Bangkok Gardens is a great option for Thai food whether you are newbie or a Thai food lover. This is due to their wide selection of food options and the ability to customize the spiciness of your dish. We split a steamed dumpling appetizer, the highlight of which was the sweet sauce. It was the right amount of food to split between two people for an appetizer. For dinner, I order the Phat Sieu with tofu at a level 2 spiciness. I ate the entire thing, which says a lot. The veggies had the right amount of crunch, and the tofu was cooked perfectly for my tastes. The sauce had just the right amount of spice and the noodles were slurpable. The only change I would make next time is to ask for less sauce, as the last few bites were swimming in it. When we went for dinner on a Saturday, we only had to wait 15 minutes for a table. They have some lounge-like waiting areas, which is much more enjoyable than standing awkwardly near the door. The setup of the restaurant is unique and contributes to the experience. There are two stories, with an atrium in the middle, so the upstairs seating overlooks the downstairs. Definitely different than most of what you'll find in Columbia. Overall, a safe bet and solid choice for Thai food.
google avatar

George H.

Yelp
Went to Bangkok Garden for dinner. I had the Thai spring rolls with shrimp. They were super fresh, and had a good amount of mint which I really like. The peanut and plum dipping sauces were very good as well. For my main course I had the coconut curry in medium spicy. It was very good And was loaded with chicken, potato, and carrots. The portion size was such that I had plenty for lunch the next day.
google avatar

Kaylee S.

Yelp
I love Thai food, and this place doesn't disappoint. I can't speak to the authenticity of everything since I'm not Thai, but I can say that their curry is some of the best in town. I came here about 30 minutes before closing with a group of 6 (yeah I know) and at that time you might expect the staff to be a little tired and exacerbated but they were nothing but kind and welcoming given the situation (don't worry, we made sure to tip a lot). The only downside is that their food tends to be inconsistent. I usually order the Green Curry Lo Mein with tofu, and sometimes I'm only given 3 pieces of tofu while other times they give me 10 huge chunks of tofu. I don't really mind, though, since I've had far more good experiences than bad.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to eat in Columbia. In the past few years the wait staff has suffered but lately they've turned it around. The last time I was there the waiter was awesome and it's a testament to how crucial it is to find good servers.
google avatar

Azile Y.

Yelp
We got take out and shared the massaman curry and the #14 Saam Ka-Sat- both we're delicious!!

Mariah T.

Yelp
Amazing gluten-free options & celiac safe!! Very attentive service & food arrived quickly! Will definitely visit again.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Great little place in downtown Columbia, Mo. had the Demon Chicken today-Excellent! The Crab Rangoon was crispy with molten cheese-perfect!
google avatar

Ahmad H.

Yelp
I was very surprised by this place. Great staff and the prices are reasonable. They have a wonderful whiskey collection. I never guessed I'll find this in Thai restaurant.
google avatar

Kat M.

Yelp
Delicious, fast, great atmosphere and great service. We went for lunch during a work day and even though they were very busy, we got a table and were served pretty quickly. The server was great. The food arrived at our table in not time and was delicious. The portions are generous, but not enormous, well worth the cost. Overall it was a great lunch experience!

Cristie S.

Yelp
The Pad Thai noodles were mushy and short. As thought I received what had to be scrapped off the bottom of the pan. The flavor was not good and I like Thai food practically anywhere. I would not return or recommend.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Love this place. Really forest place for a date. Tons of seating on the inside and offers a really cool atmosphere. The chicken pad Thai is my go-to when I come here with the Thai tea. They are both so so good. The pad Thai has a huge portion and is decently priced. I always have leftovers. Best Thai place!
google avatar

Patricia G.

Yelp
Favorite restaurant in town. My gma took me there for the first time back in 2011, and I've been hooked since then! The entire menu never disappoints! The staff is friendly, especially the manager Nat, who seems to never forget a face and always greets customers. I would always recommend the drunken noodles for first timers! Ps you get to choose which meat (or vegetarian options are available) you want and spice level!

Shanin R.

Yelp
This is a drink on the rocks and this was the only proof I could capture. Very stingy with their drinks and terrible costumer service.
google avatar

Lynnet P.

Yelp
Great menu! There were 5 of us and all of us ordered something different. Their Pad Thai was excellent. I ordered Thai Basil Stir fry which is a traditional Thai dish. It wasn't on the menu but she showed me something very similar. It was perfect, packed with flavor. We went on a slow night close to closing and they were very gracious and accommodating..
google avatar

Phil D.

Yelp
I've had a lot of Thai/Asian food, from many cities, and this place was AWFUL. The Dumpling Soup was all red pepper flakes and no flavor. All of the noodles dishes were bad, from the Phat Thai to the Drunken Noodles to the Lo Mein. Even the Dragon Chicken had no Thai flavor, with just chunks of chicken and veggies. Service was good, but maybe just have a drink at the bar and eat somewhere else.
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
Damn. The Thai iced tea and coffee were delicious. I ordered the 3 curry pork- to die for! Be careful when picking the degree of heat. I got the 4 out of 5 and whoa. My Bella ordered the kao paht with pork. They know what they're doing here. Definitely coming back.
google avatar

Joshua H.

Yelp
I had a $3 off coupon for this place and I herd good things about its authenticity to I had to give it a shot. I did take out ordering this time and what I got was the Phat Thai and the Phat Thai Peanut which is a spin on their original of course by adding peanut sauce. I got both with a level 3 heat index. I should have been more reserved being a first time consumer of their food in that a 3 proved a little too much for even my taste buds! Damn! The food was good no question but despite my dragon breath and runny nose while eating the food, all was very enjoyable. The cost was 12 bucks for each dinner entree (before discount) and the helping was more then enough for 1 person, 2 people could get their fill off 1 entree. I got mine with chicken for both versions of the Phat Thai which worked well as does chicken with any dish of course. The peanut spice version did leave my gut with a burning, quesy feeling however and it lasted a good 2 hours post consumptions so maybe it was the heat, the sauce, the salt? Who knows? Next time I wont go as hot and I may get more adventurous and try something in the curry family.

Yelp
Really uncomfortable chairs. They said is right next to the door. It was so cold I couldn't take my jacket off the whole time and was still cold.
