Best Vietnamese Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This family-owned restaurant is tucked in the corner of a strip mall where customers can also do their shopping at Vien Dong supermarket. They’re only doing take-out for now, due to staff shortage, but are hoping to open up for dining in as they used to before the pandemic. Their excellent bun rieu is currently available from Friday to Sunday but don’t miss the combo banh cuon with tender steamed rice rolls, rice noodles, fried pork patties, and Vietnamese-style pork charcuterie." - Helen I. Google
Authentic Vietnamese place serving only 4 dishes. But if you like made to order banh cuon (steamed rice rolls), cha lua (steamed pork loaf), or best of all, gio chien (fried pork paste), you really won’t be disappointed. These simple items are much better than what’s available elsewhere because of the ingredients and because of their freshness. Yum! Note: You can reheat the fried pork paste in an air fryer at home and it still tastes good, but when it just comes out, the smell of it is so irresistible!

Google
One of the best banh cuon in San Diego! The menu options are straight forward just banh cuon, the topping options and 2-3 different kinds of soup limited time only, until they run out or if they even make it for that day. The place is not fancy, so just eat and go or take to go. They have party trays too, just call in advance.

Google
09-12-24 I ordered $50 party tray included: steamed pork rolls atop with: steamed pork loaf, fried pork loaf and fried fish cake; veggies and fish sauce 08-13-24 -6lbs of steamed pork roll $7/lb -Veggie $1 -Steamed pork loaf $10 -Fried pork loaf $10 When I walked into the restaurant, my order was ready for pick up. I paid and left to my destination, quick and easy. The food was yummy. Everything was piping hot. My family enjoyed it very much. Going forward, this will be my go to place to order all my banh cuon for parties.

Been coming here for my banh cuon fix for years. Never disappointed. It's incredibly refreshing, tasty, and perfect for a summer day. I get the special number 1.

Google
We ordered a party tray of half and half. Half bánh cuốn which is stuffed with meat and the plain, bánh ướt. The tray came with two rows of sliced meat loaf on top and one row of fried meat loaf. Also came with an entire take out box of filled with veggies and a soup container of fish sauce. The fried meat loaf was so good. I wish it came with more. The steamed rolls had lots of meat and the plain was nice and thin not so thick. All the flavors meshed together when you add the veggies and sauce. The tray cost $35 and fed four of us. We also got the meat loaf roll on the side for extra meat and that cost a whopping $7 which is a lot compared to other places. I would recommend ordering the tray if you have more than two people. You get the best bang for your buck. Parking here is super tight. I always fear that I’ll get a hit and run and would park really far just to get some space.

Google
My favorite banh cuon place. Love the meat that come with it. Always go for the Dac biet banh cuon. The bun rieu is ok, but I’ve had better else where in San Diego. I also would recommend the fried pork roll to take home. They sell those in the front. Taste great in bread when sliced, like a Vietnamese banh mi.

Google
Good of food. I recommend everything here. About kitchen. I dont know. They have very little in menu. Thats formula to make them the best quality.

Google
We happened to see this restaurant when go shopping for the first time at Vien Dong Super Market. So we decided to come in and buy some food to go. We are very happy with the friendly customer service. We ordered "bun rieu" and "banh uoc". Very traditional Vietnamese food. Very large portions and great taste. Because we ordered 4 items they even gave us a plastic tray to carry out and put on our car for free. Very nice place to come back.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for breakfast on a Wednesday morning. I was very surprised on how fast our special combination plate came out and how everything was fresh. My husband was craving for banh cuon and we are so grateful that this place is very close to us. The food and service were great. The restaurant itself is outdated and small, but we didn't mind at all as long as the food and service was good, which this place delivered. For what we paid, we felt like what we got was a pretty good deal. We will definitely come back!

Yelp
In San Diego, I would have to say this to the absolute best restaurant for bánh cuốn (rice flour rolls). The menu is very simple. They serve 2 types of rice flour rolls, one with ground meat and the other plain, and then there are a few options for toppings. I came here with my dad and cousins and their husbands, so we ordered a few different varieties to share. This is not a place where you want to take a first date. It's not pretty, but I promise you the food is delicious. Most of their business comes from take-out or party platters, but they do have some tables for dining in. The portions are huge and the price is very reasonable.

Yelp
I had bookmarked this place for a while in Yelp and got to try it for dinner on Saturday. I placed an order to go for combination #1 and an iced coffee, which came out to $18.00. Pros: -free shared parking lot with other businesses -friendly staff -dine in and take out options -generous portions! -they have two options for iced coffee- strong or sweet. I opted for strong which was tasty Cons: -none Other: -I came shortly before they closed so they did not have any egg rolls available. Come early if you want to order specific items on the menu.

Yelp
Delicious, authentic Vietnamese food that you wouldn't normally find at your typical pho restaurant! Most people order party trays but we dined-in and ordered from their small, limited menu. There's several combo options and each one comes with a good amount of food. Super small restaurant with only a couple of tables but there's a ton of parking in the lot. We ordered first and since it takes awhile for them to prepare everything, we went to the Vietnamese market to pass the time. We bought some drinks there which they allowed us to bring in to eat with our food. I ordered the Combo #1 which comes with a bit of everything. My favorites were the rice rolls (soft and silky) and the deep fried pork (not crispy but delicious). There was more than enough food for one person and I ended up taking leftovers home. Each combo also comes with a side of fish sauce and if you're sensitive to spicy, you can request fish sauce without chilis. If you're in the area, stop by and give their Banh Cuon a try!

Yelp
Came here on my way back to LA. A little hole in the wall type of place next to a Vietnamese supermarket. I never had this type of Vietnamese dishes before and had absolutely no idea what it is, but figured I'll just grab a bit of everything in each mouthful, drizzle some fish sauce on it and EAT! It is such a wonderful balance of flavor and deliciously perfect for summer!

Yelp
Finally made it in for Banh Cuon. This is my uncle's favorite spot. They were consistently busy for a Saturday afternoon for the whole duration I dined in. My friend and I both ordered the Banh Cuon Dac Biet, but the Bun Rieu looked and smelled really good. Will come back for that next time. Our meals were very fresh and tasty. Great value as well. It could be enough for two meals. I especially liked the variety of herbs and veggies. They are generous with the protein as well. Only a few tables for dining in. There was a solid line of Togo orders. I like how they only have a few items on the menu. They do Banh Cuon really well.

Yelp
09-12-24 I ordered a $50 party tray. It included veggies and fish sauce, the steamed pork rolls atom with: steamed pork loaf, fried pork loaf and fish cake (see pics) My called in orders were ready for pick up, no wait time at all. Note: If you buy by the pound, it's $7/lb, not $6.

Yelp
No frills, high quality, fresh ingredients. Their banh cuon and banh uot are silky and made to order. I love how their nem chua tastes and their nuoc cham is to die for and extra garlickly. Perfect for dipping the banh cuon and banh uot! Yum! +1 Vibe +1 Taste +1 Presentation +1 Service +1 Value

Yelp
Been eating their banh cuon here for years thanks for to amazing in-laws who are regular and loyal customers here! They've recently increased their variety banh cuon tray from $45 to $50 but still tastes as delicious as ever! I love their basic plain rice paper noodle Pros: -Very delicious and thin rice paper noodle -also serve with minced pork and mushroom options -fish sauce dipping is delicious -banh cong is also superb! -also can buy sticks of Vietnamese ham on the side -also have a variety of other Vietnamese munchies on their menu -fast and efficient service -food wrapped efficiently and neatly -greens included with order is always fresh -party trays are convenient and good prices -shared parking l Cons: -no longer dine in option Tip: Must call to order in advance and they will also give you an estimated pick up time (due to their increased popularity and many orders)

Yelp
Our first visit.. unfortunately my dad and I had food poisoning. He threw up when we got home, I was nauseated and had a run and bad stomach crap and start sweating Service was good, restaurant a little run down. Guess we won't be back at all.

Yelp
The best banh coun I have ever tasted. I mean probably the whole united state. They have the best bun Rui in San Diego if not all over America as well. They only have it on Friday and Saturday
google avatar

Gentil N.

Yelp
Best bánh cuốn ever and very reasonable prices. My new go-to spot for sure. Would recommend getting a mixture of the bánh cuốn and the bánh ướt.
google avatar

Phamhong G.

Yelp
Great food, fair prices, large portions, and speedy service. My go-to spot for banh cuon since I was a kid. You can't go wrong with the special "dac biet" for $13 so that you get a little bit of everything!

Yelp
I was in the area, so I had to stop by Phuong Nga Banh Cuon again, and I'm so glad I did! This place never disappoints. The banh cuon is always fresh and delicious, with that perfect, delicate texture. Every bite is packed with flavor, and they have a great variety of fillings to choose from. Plus, they offer party trays, which are perfect for gatherings! I normally go with my mom, so she can translate for me and help navigate the menu. The place is small, so most of the time, we take our food to-go, and the staff is friendly, making it a great spot to grab a quick meal. If you're in City Heights, do yourself a favor and check this place out--you won't regret it!

Yelp
This was just amazing. I got this on the 4th of July and it beats any normal 4th of July meal. I grew up eating banh cuon, and this was top notch. It was so fresh-- the rolls were bouncy, soft, and stuffed with delicious meat filling. I loved the value of the party platter, and the care of presentation and flavor. The lady on the phone was nice and helpful. Take out only. Definitely would recommend calling for pick up as well. Definitely simple but best place for banh cuon in SD-- only a few things on the menu. Next time, i have to try the bunrieu!

Yelp
I just had the best "banh cuon" (steamed rice roll) in my life! The roll was gently soft but not mushy. The rice roll was really thin. It was rolled multiple times but did not feel doughy at all. These rolls were served warm. Wait. I haven't finished yet. The star of the show is actually the fish sauce. It is sooo good. Garlicky, spicy and savoury. Imagine dipping this delicious rice roll into this fish sauce. Heaven!!! It was so delicious that I had to order one more portion and two more to go.

Yelp
I've eat at Phuong Nga multiple times before, and this is the first time it happens. I was munching on my steamed roll that's when I felt something hard in it, so I pulled out just to see this hardened piece in the picture which was kind of scary. Everything was fine I'm just telling y'all to be extra careful on the cooking next time, or else it could be very dangerous for people. Other than that the food was alright, I have been eating here for a while and I think it's worth it to give it a try.
google avatar

Yelp
No frills, nothing fancy, just consistently delicious bánh cuốn, bánh ướt, and cha. We usually order the đặc biệt to go and it's enough to split between two of us. We recently ate inside for the first time and it was probably the best plate of bánh cuốn I've had. The batter was so chewy and slippery, the fried cha was so savory and tender, the fish sauce was almost too spicy (which is my preferred level of spicy!). We also got a bowl of bun rieu which came out piping hot, even after putting all the veggies in. Overall, it was a great meal and I'll be back for my bánh cuốn fix

Nicole L.

Yelp
Ate at this restaurant for lunch and ordered #1 special, which comes with banh cuon, steam & fried meat loaf, sour pork, and veggies. Good portion size and good price- couldn't finish all my food in one sitting! Lots of phone orders came through while I was dining in. They accept credit card payments too. I'm excited to come back and try other stuff, like their bun rieu.

Yelp
Been missing banh cuon and stumbled across this place. They have a limited menu and specialize in banh cuon dishes. I ordered the special order banh cuon plate which comes with three different types of meat, side of veges (bean sprouts, cucumbers, and herbs) and sauce. The banh cuon was good but a bit too peppery. The restaurant was hard to find but its located in the corner plaza with a supermarket. Service was quick and my food was ready in less than 10 minutes.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
Fairly priced, delicious options and generous portions. I would highly recommend, esp for easy take out dinners. The service is friendly and efficient. Parking is rather difficult but overall decent.
google avatar

Yelp
The one and only best fresh rolled noodles in San Diego . This place authentic. No need drive to Santa Ana for this anymore .
google avatar

Yelp
Service and food is amazing very authentic food I will be back. Family owned their bun rieu is so good ( tomato fish base i think) this is a find gem for Vietnamese food!

Yelp
Unlike most restaurants with an extensive menu, Phuong Nga has a few limited options, but that's because they know what they're good at and lord are they good at it. I've been craving for banh cuon for months now and trying to find a good authentic spot has been hard BUT my search is finally over!! Their service was quick and efficient and the lady at the front was super kind! The inside of the restaurant was clean and bright. And the food... THE. FOOD. Super fresh and so generous with their portions. The banh cuon had the perfect amount of filling with a well balanced mixture of ground pork and vegetables and wrapped tightly with a silky, fresh, bouncy and chewy rice sheet. Came with a side of fresh herbs and can I just talk about that dipping sauce? If they sell it on the side I would LOVE to buy a jar. It had a slight sweetness, but was tangy, salty, and spicy. All flavors blended so well together and I must say the dipping sauce took the banh cuon to the next level. I will say this place was a bit of a drive for me, but it was well worth every mile and I absolutely will commit to the drive whenever I have a craving again. So grateful to have discovered this place!

Yelp
Got the dac biet. Food was freshly prepared. Close to being really good. The fish sauce to dip left something to desire

Yelp
1st time going! Heard about and have been waiting to try it. It wasn't too busy we went in only like 2 customers in front of us. He took our order and our food came out in 10mins. I ordered the #1 special combo bành cuón uot and it was so delicious!!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food fair prices authentic Vietnamese Banh cuon. I really like it a lot! A must try!!!

Sharon L.

Yelp
I love Banh cuon and this place makes very good Banh cuon, this place has become my fav spot to come for Banh cuon, I love how close by it is to me and can place my order over the phone for take out

Yelp
This place never disappoint, it's perfect! I had called and order in advanced. Everything was fresh and good.

Yelp
The most crave worthy Vietnamese dish in all of San Diego. The banh cuon at Phuong Nga has the stamp of approval from all my picky Vietnamese family members, even beyond San Diego. Number one special with the banh cuon uot and all the cold cut meat is my go to. The texture and taste is very consistent. Call ahead for party trays. Banh cuon is a party hit if your group enjoys Vietnamese food and fish sauce. Prices of course went up across the board. That is to be expected these days. The only things I'm not in love with at Phuong Nga is their greens are not always fresh and plentiful. I go to the market next door to buy more of my favorite greens. Their fish sauce is also way too sweet. I prefer using my own fish sauce.
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
As of March 2023, they only take to-go orders! They also take card. So glad I found a good banh cuon place here in San Diego; it's a small business too! I highly recommend their dac biet if you're a first-timer; the portions are very generous and you get to try a bit of everything. I agree with a previous review that said their fish sauce is a little sweeter, but I don't think it got in the way of my experience trying their food. The people working there are accommodating too (ex. they will put your banh mi veggies on the side if you ask)I would absolutely go again and recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was once a Pho restaurant many moons ago and had changed owners and types of food probably 5 times in the past 20 or so years. They do not allow dine in and everything has to be ordered to go. Service was fast and food was made fresh. I went with their popular bánh cuốn and not many other places in SoCal even serve it. In Utah only has 2 restaurants that have it. Delicious and tasty and hope there are other Vietnamese places that will serve this as it is a bit of a drive for me.
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
I am not Vietnamese but I LOVE Vietnamese cuisine. My friends who are Viet though recommended this place and we all went to try their Banh Cuon. This location was tucked away in this plaza that was hard to see from the street. Even though there were no in house dining, I noticed that this establishment had a constant influx of takeout orders from Vietnamese people so it must be quite good and authentic! The Banh Cuon was delicious, we ordered the combos. It's basically this light rice noodle paper wrapped around various meat/vegetable fillings! So yummy and comes with vegetables and spicy fish sauce. Would definitely recommend this place !! 5/5
google avatar

Andrea N.

Yelp
Our go to for party trays! Make sure you call ahead at least one day, otherwise the wait might be hours the same day. Great combo of meats, veggies and sauce, always a crowd pleaser!
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Still the best banh cuon and bun rieu I had in San Diego. They are now allowing dine in. There are only 4-5 tables and they get super busy on the weekends. I recommend calling ahead and placing a to go order. Sometimes when they sell out they close early so make sure you call ahead!

Yelp
Fresh and delicious! Staff is nice, parking is easy and staff is friendly. Their Viet Iced coffee is a must have as well.

David L.

Yelp
Awesome food, always get the banh cuon and love its taste, the sauce (not overly fishy) and the veggies they give with it. Even the meat that comes with it is just better than other places. Good price too, and the people that work there are nice enough (should say thank you when receive a tip though.).

Yelp
Fast service Great fresh food Nice family Great atmosphere Affordable and a simple menu

Yelp
The owner is the best. He always gives me a good time and treats me right. I love his food and his meat.

Yelp
The best bánh cuốn in town! Their bánh cuốn is so fresh and delicious. It is served with a mixed of different herbs/shredded cucumber and bean sprouts along with tasty fish sauce. Bring cash because they don't take cards. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Phuong Nga is the best place in SD for banh cuon! My mom has been ordering from here for years and the food is always on point. They give a lot of food for the price as well.

Lynn M.

Yelp
So delicious, generous portion. Nước mắm so perfect . Fast service. Highly recommend. I love that they give good portion of fresh vegetables for bun rieu

Yelp
Simply amazing. The best spot in SD County for Banh Cuon. In case you aren't familiar, what is Banh Cuon? It's a thin rice paper roll containing minced pork and woodear mushrooms accompanied by beansprouts and fresh herbs. It's topped off with nuoc mam (fish sauce reduction) and hanh phi (fried onions). This dish is a culinary masterpiece. A textbook example of balance, texture, and constraint. Just delicious. There are multiple variants of this dish. Banh Cuon Thanh Tri aka Banh Uot refers to the rice paper rolls sans meat. This dish teams up with meat goodies like gio and cha - (think of them as Vietnamese meatloaf :) Sad to see the original location closed, however, this outpost next to Vien Dong supermarket bears plentiful parking. Huge portions. Fresh and authentic. Very reasonable prices. Friendly service. Extremely recommended!

Yelp
We ordered a party tray of half and half. Half bánh cuốn which is stuffed with meat and the plain, bánh ớt. You can the most bang for your buck. Parking here is super tight and sketchy. I'm always afraid I'll get a hit and run and I would park far just to get space. We did take out but still had to wait. While you wait, you can check out the super market Vien Dong.

Holly P.

Yelp
Ambiance is simple and nothing fancy but don't let that fool you. Best banh cuon place I know! Staff is so so so friendly and welcoming. I drive from oc just to get banh cuon from here for my boyfriend and I. There's no place that remotely comes close to deliciousness.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
DO NOT TRUST THE ADDRESS ON YELP, GOOGLE, AND APPLE MAPS. It will take you to this weird building that's really hard to get into because 1) super steep and 2) maps tells you to turn from the main road (54th) but you can't turn because there's a divider that separates main road from mini road. Keep going down the street from where it's telling you to go. It's in same plaza as Vien Dong supermarket. Or just search up Vien Dong instead which is more accurate directions. Also the outside pictures on yelp is outdated, they have a second location which is the only location now. Its a white building. I spent too long and was so confused trying to find this place. I've eaten here before but not at this new location. Prot tip: Call ahead. When I ordered at the front, it took 20min to make the food. Also order the #1. Its also more food than it looks, could honestly feed 2 people for $9.
google avatar

Casey F.

Yelp
Love their Banh Cuon. I normally get their #4 combo with all meat. I wish their veggies had more basil, and were a little fresher and less steamed. Their dipping sauce is awesome. Just enough spice, sweetness, and fish sauce funkiness!

Alice L.

Yelp
Very authentic and tasty banh Cuon. The best one I know of in San Diego. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
Honestly the best place for banh cuon or banh uot. Our family usually orders the party trays (now $30, gone up $5) and eats it for several days when we are craving it. I introduced this place to my boyfriend last year and now every once in awhile he'll tell me he craves it and wants to it fresh there. When we eat there, we usually order the banh cuon dac biet and that is around $8 and we still end up taking a little less than a meal home. It's a little hole in the wall, there are probably about 8 tables. Don't expect any fancy decor or anything along those lines, literally just tables and chairs. The parking sucks in the plaza because there are so many tiny shops in here and also a laundromat and grocery store so it is always crazy. Parking in the streets is just as bad. I suggest you order to go and go with someone or turn on your emergency lights while you run in and pick it up. Either that or eat at during off hours. Service is very fast and food is always fresh. The banh cuon is super thin and chewy. It comes with meat which is called banh cuon or without which is called banh uot. I prefer banh cuon and always order the special because you get everything. Portion size is huge so very affordable place to go eat at. This place is great for parties do to their $30 party trays. Overall, this place is legit. Five stars!! The best place for banh cuon/ banh uot in San Diego.
