Oh, how the mighty have fallen. For the longest time, I was going to Banh Mi at least every other week and telling anyone I could how it's the best banh-mi sandwich out there. I never minded the wait, because I would simply chit chat with the proprietress behind the counter about life, culture, and - above all - cooking while waiting for my sandwich to be crafted to protection. Other people complained about the slow, one-person operation, but I actually enjoyed the opportunity to talk to one of the few lady entrepreneurs of the neighborhood.
Being entrepreneurial myself, I spent a couple of years working seven days a week building up my own thing, and unfortunately was not able to get to Banh Mi. Friends had picked up orders for me and I figured they weren't as good because they weren't ordered specifically by me, in person. Alas, I finally went a couple of more times in the last few months, only to find that the team had changed...
...and so had the food. And now it's moved to a nicer location, but the food still disappoints.
It's not that Banh Mi 2.0 is bad, it's just not nearly as good, and certainly no longer worth going out of your way for.
For that, I pour out a bit of my Bia Saigon, for a fallen homie.
