Let’s be real: Bánh Mì Phượng is probably the most famous sandwich shop on the planet thanks to Anthony Bourdain. Because of that, it’s now a mandatory stop for every tourist. But after standing in an insanely long line for what felt like forever, I have to say it: it is totally not worth the hype.🤔🤨 The scene outside is pure madness—crowded, sweaty, and stressful. And the sandwich? Honestly, it’s just okay. It’s not bad, but it’s definitely nothing special. With the massive volume they pump out daily, the soul of the bread feels lost. It’s a mass-produced experience where you’re just another number in a queue. If you’re looking for a "culinary miracle," you’re going to be disappointed. It’s the kind of place you visit just to say you’ve been there, not because the food actually blows your mind. The only upside is the location in the heart of the ancient town, surrounded by those iconic yellow walls and pretty flowers. It’s a nice view, but it doesn't make the mediocre bread taste any better. If you want to taste real, authentic Vietnamese Bánh Mì, Hoi An has so many other hidden gems like Bánh Mì Madam Khánh or small street carts that offer way more flavor with zero wait time. Skip the tourist trap, save your time, and go explore the local spots instead. Your taste buds (and your patience) will thank you.🇻🇳

A very good Banh Mi, super affordable too, but not sure if it counts for the best I’ve had. I thought the bread could be warmer and it could hold all ingredients better. With that said, it’s still one heck of a sandwich and gorgeously done with a little of every meat and ingredients. I ordered their spring rolls too which was generously filled. wish I could eat more of it

Best Bánh Mì I tasted in Vietnam so far. This is a fast pace area. We didn't even have to wait to be seated. Food prices are really affordable especially for tourists. I would highly recommend this place if you will go here in Hoi An.

It was actually very easy to find this place because many people were waiting outside, but the line moved quickly. My wife and I ordered the mix, BBQ pork, passion fruit juice, and mango juice. The BBQ pork was a little spicy, but very good, and the baguette was incredibly crispy. The mix is their signature Bánh mì, and it was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. I’ve really been into Bánh mì on this trip, and this shop is the best place for any Bánh mì fan. If you come to Hoi An, you should definitely try it.

Being a huge Banh Mi fan, I made it my mission to find the best one in Hoi An. The top contenders, of course, were Banh Mi Phuong and Madame Khanh (The Banh Mi Queen). We started with Banh Mi Phuong, it’s the one that Anthony Bourdain famously loved, so expectations were high! Both places have indoor seating, which is great since you can actually sit down and enjoy your sandwich comfortably. I ordered a pork and a chicken banh mi to compare fairly. Unfortunately, the chicken banh mi at Phuong’s was quite a letdown; the meat was dry, the filling wasn’t generous, and the pâté didn’t have much punch. The pork version was better and had more flavor, but the bread could’ve been fresher. Overall, it just didn’t live up to the hype. Next stop: Madame Khanh, and wow, what a difference! I ordered the exact same sandwiches, and this time I was blown away. Both were packed with ingredients, full of flavor, and the pâté… OMG 😲 unreal! The BBQ pork was my absolute favorite, but honestly, I’d order both again in a heartbeat. So yeah, for me, Banh Mi Phuong sadly lost this round. Maybe it’s not quite what it used to be back in Bourdain’s day. Hats off to The Queen 👑 she completely lives up to her title! 🥖

Good banh mi with vegan option as well! I love the coconut coffee, very creamy and coconuty and the stir fry morning glory with rice is honestly a family favourite despite its simplicity. Definitely has the "wok hey"! The chicken rice is great too! Overall highly recommend and price is reasonable despite being a tourist spot. Do try out the local huda beer if you like light beer.

We ordered the mixed Bahnmi here, taste wise was average, not enough veges inside :( This shop is located on a busier street so it’s quite crowded, the sitting space is quite squeezy. Fruit juice and smoothies were good though! Overall the dining experience was average.

After a lackluster banh mi from a place down the street which has rave reviews, I had to come try this one for myself. There was literally no wait here (the other place was packed) and after 6 minutes, I got my sandwich. I ordered the exact same sandwich as I got at the other place... mixed. Immediately, this one stood out. The filling was ample and you could see each and every component. I could also taste the ingredients. The textures were also very balanced and not a mushy mess. After the first banh mi (which I only ate half of) I couldn't finish this one. I carried it for the rest of the day and ate it several hours later. Although the bread got a little wet from the ingredients by then, it was still very tasty. I am so glad I did not trust those other reviews and came here as well. Definitely a far superior sandwich by a long shot!
