--Coaster Countdown to #400, part 2--
The (((SIREN SONG))) of Cincinnati.
Board the world's longest inverted roller coaster, and be prepared to get scared sh*tless.
One of the many things that makes this ride so cool is that it's the first inverted coaster built in the USA since Kansas City's Worlds of Fun debuted 'Patriot' all the way back in 2006. That means that for a span of 8 years, no inverted coasters were built on American soil. Then in 2014, like a distant shriek from a maritime siren, BANSHEE arrived. And holy moly does she have something to say!
Screaming through 7 inversions, this coaster was built on the ashes of the ill-fated Son of Beast. Kings Island even used this to their advantage at the official ride announcement/unveiling, wherein a piercing wail is heard, which causes the silhouetted graphic of SoB's wooden structure to crumble. The video is actually very, very cool, and definitely worth a few minutes of your time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUrQU3PG1nc
It's only fitting, then, that a large stone marker and eternal flame mark the spot of the once-mighty coaster that ruled the land. A classy--if bittersweet--gesture on behalf of Kings Island, acknowledging the troubled wooden coaster's legacy.
~Special ride elements~
*dive loop
*vertical loop
*zero-G roll
*pretzel knot (back-to-back dive loop & Immelman combo)
*vertical loop
*in-line twist
The single coolest feature of Banshee isn't her top speed of 68mph, but when she actually hits it. Most coasters experience their peak velocity at the bottom of the first drop, whereas Banshee reaches her maximum kinetic energy following the zero-G roll, just prior to entering the 'pretzel knot' element (inversions #4 and #5). Because of the topography of the land, the layout stretches into a ravine where the terrain actually dips down......meaning that after inversion #3 is when you're going fastest. You'll definitely feel the train picking up speed, which adds to the excitement.
Another feature unique to Banshee is its second inversion--a vertical loop--that wraps around the lift hill. Following Kumba @ BG Tampa and Riddler's Revenge @ SFMM, this is only the 3rd Bolliger & Mabillard coaster to use such a tactic. I have to admit, it's pretty awesome to see the chain lift "threading the needle".
Oh, and I should mention that 3/4ths of the way up the lift hill lurks an audio clip of a shrill screech that plays whenever a train of victims nears the top. Additional psychological torture, you know, in case you weren't already pissing your pants. I've been told by Kings Island staff that on a clear day you can hear the Banshee's "wail" throughout the entire park.
Lastly, the purple track and blue supports make a big visual impact, and the smooth operation combined with comfortable restraints make for an overall very pleasant ride experience. Imagine 'Batman' on Jose Canseco-scale steroids, and you might get an idea of how intense this roller coaster is. For those who can't get enough adrenaline coursing through their veins, riding in the front row at nighttime could be the most exhilarating 2 minutes and 40 seconds of your life.
SCREAM for me, baby! The louder the better, cuz you know that's how I like it.
