Bao Battersea - Review - Battersea - London - The Infatuation

"There aren’t many chances for genuine respite in the brick and steel end-times bunker that is Battersea Power Station. But Bao, with its warm wooden floors, gently glowing orange lamps, and families finding peace over Taiwanese fried chicken nuggets, is one of them. Come with a gaggle of small people who’ve fallen out in the Lego store and need a pillowy, sweet bao stuffed with tender pork to put things right. Or pitch up at the pretty 1940s-inspired counter if you’re shopping alone and have hit sensory overload. The beef noodle soup, slick with spiced beef butter, is a good way to reset frazzled systems. But the best things on the menu here remain the doughy, comforting, handheld buns." - Sinéad Cranna

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Came here on a weekend with a few friends and had a great time! 🙌 Service was smooth and efficient ✅ with dishes coming out one after another 🍽️. Perfect way to enjoy smaller plates to share 🥢 and mains for ourselves. Yes, it’s a little on the pricier side 💰, but absolutely worth it for the quality. Everything was clean, presentable ✨, and most importantly — fresh and delicious 😋. Would definitely come back! 🔥

We’d give this a 3.8-star rating if we could. It’s not bad, and some of their baos are okay, but overall this feels like a heavily modified version of so-called Taiwanese “street food” adapted for Western diners. It has the look of the dishes—ish—but not the depth or authenticity of the flavours. The seasoning of the beef noodle soup is quite off. The beef lard and oil overpower the actual star of the dish—the beef—leaving only a faint hint of salt and lacking the soy-sauce base that usually defines this heavier style of noodle soup. The coriander had almost no aroma; I even wondered if they might have used parsley instead. The two look similar, but the flavour is completely different—or perhaps it simply wasn’t fresh, as the fragrance was entirely gone. The meats aren’t the freshest either, especially the pork in the pork bao, which has a noticeable gaminess. The beef in the noodle soup is overcooked to the point of being mushy, losing the texture that should give it a nice bite. Their “Taiwanese” fried chicken is really just a weaker version of Japanese karaage—wrong seasoning, and served with a sweet chilli sauce that screams “orientalism” more than authenticity. The Lu Rou Fan was probably the most disappointing dish we tried, especially since we had high hopes when we saw it on the menu. The fried egg on top was nicely done, and the meat tasted okay—just a bit on the dry side. But we couldn’t understand why they added pork floss. It’s an odd choice for this dish and made an already dry bowl even drier. A more traditional Lu Rou Fan would have the braising liquid spooned over the rice, allowing the dish to be moist and flavourful. The fat from the stewed pork normally adds richness and creates textural layers, but none of that was present here… A quick note on the service: we arrived during a quiet hour when there were only a few diners in the restaurant. The staff were visibly free, chatting among themselves, while we stood at the front waiting to be seated. It’s not that we minded waiting, but with plenty of empty tables and no rush, choosing to finish their conversation before acknowledging customers felt a bit off. That said, the environment is nice. If you want somewhere with a vibe that’s a bit different from Chinatown, it could still make a decent date-night spot, make sure to avoid peak hours though. Just… don’t call this an authentic Taiwanese restaurant.

The food was genuinely good — when I first tasted it, I even thought I’d definitely come back again with friends. But after the service I experienced, it’s a hard no. The waitress (the one with the wolf-cut hairstyle) gave me attitude for no reason. She slammed the plates down loudly, rolled her eyes several times, and even did it again when I simply asked for the bill. It completely ruined the experience.

Honestly, the music, ambiance and food are amazing! Excellent customer service. 💖 The crispy chicken Bao Bun is my favourite! I kept coming to eat it!!! MIGHT ORDER IT x3 next time! 🤣 💖 I did ordered new foods and drinks along the way!! I came to know Bao after I saw there was a promotion before but I was craving for it the whole time during my lunch break at Battersea 🤪

Food is great! My favourite is the taiwanese chicken. Loved the food here, and price is very affordable! If you’re seating in the indoor dining, the tables and chairs are too small & could be slightly tight. My partner who is 6ft tall found the space too small, however it didn’t ruin the experience. Service and food were great!

Had some of the most wonderfully cooked noodles with tofu and spice. These were genuinely some of the best noodles I've ever had. The bao buns actually weren't that nice however, I had the vegetarian bao. However, my fiancée who had the non-veggie bao buns said they were lovely.

We had the best experience here! The beef noodles melted in the mouth, the grape beer was unusual in the best way possible & delightful. The bao buns were soft & flavourful. Everything we tried was amazing! The playlist that one of the staff members had on made the experience even more enjoyable. We’ll be back soon!

Really good food and service. The restaurant was full and the lady allowed us to book and come back in 30 mins. You receive a message when the table is ready. Love the food and the vibes. Only think I could recommend is increase the portion for the noodles: just add 100 grams of noodles more. Keeps you full and doesn’t cost a fortune to you.
