"How wonderful to have Bao Mi in New Orleans. This downtown shop specializes in grab and go Vietnamese food — favorites like banh mi, bao, and vermicelli bowls, not to mention the ridiculously good bulgogi fries. With a number of longtime Vietnamese restaurants closing in recent years, it’s heartening to see a new, modern Vietnamese option for downtown workers and city residents alike. Find Bao Mi in the Louisiana State University Health Foundation building, Monday through Friday, closed weekends." - Clair Lorell

This was seriously one of the best places I’ve been to on my trip to New Orleans. We didn’t even intend to come here- just needed something fast to eat before leaving for the day. I came with some international friends and even they said it was some of the best food they’ve had in the U.S. so far (we’re living in California but have been on many trips across the country). I seriously don’t know how they don’t have a line out the door! 10/10 try this place out!

Update 6/2025 - I got the chance to try the vermicelli bowl this time, and it was yummy. First time here. I got the Bao Pew Pew Shrimp, it had a kick to the sauce. It was delicious. I will definitely come back to try another item off the menu

Pretty solid overall. Food is on the Vietnamese side — rather than the “Americanized Vietnamese” style, thankfully. Parking is fine—street side. It looks like paid street parking but it’s NOPD so they ain’t quick to ticket. Food? Ordered the pork and spring roll vermicelli dish. Strong 4 star. The spring rolls? 4.5 star ($6 for two). I don’t like mint (or whatever; never have and never will) but very good. The bao? Ordered the 3 combo $15 (va $10-ish for two). Taiwanese style and pretty good. The KFC is Korean fried chicken inspired, 5 star. The bulgogi is 4 star, solid but nothing wow. The other? 4 star bc I can’t remember so look at the pic. The kumquat tea? $4 a cup. Sweet, so it seems westernized to fit their taste buds. Friend liked it. Me? Personally, I’d cut the sweetness by half and beef up the tea leaves. Overall, it’s a solid 4.5 star. Pricey, $30/person. So for value, I’d skip it. For food, it’s very good and thus gets a 5 star — especially in the middle of the medical complex with limited food options. Hopefully they last for years bc the med students could use a place like this.

Amazing food and service! The pew pew shrimp Bahn mi was absolutely amazing as well as the traditional Bahn mi. The egg rolls are authentic and taste great. The KFC chicken sandwich was crispy and full of flavor. Would highly recommend coming to eat here. For desert, the iced coffee was delicious and a must have. Thank-you for a wonderful experience.

Google
Amazing vermicelli bowls!! Fast, friendly service. We stopped by here on a Thursday after a business meeting. Slightly after lunchtime so they had lots of people in the kitchen, but not a ton of people waiting in line. We ordered at the counter and the lady was nice enough to explain BAO and Bahh Mi were. my coworker ordered the grilled pork Bahn Mi (aka: sandwich) and I ordered the garlic butter, shrimp vermicelli bowl. And I was super thirsty so I ordered the jasmine tea. There were many more shrimp on the vermicelli bowl then I could’ve imagined, and they were cooked to perfection with fantastic spices, not very spicy, but very flavorful. I must’ve read the menu too quickly as I thought the bottom was only filled with vermicelli and was happy to find out that there was actually lettuce and carrots, and cilantro underneath. I don’t like eating heavy lunches and carbs make me sleepy so this was fantastic. Fish sauce also does come with the vermicelli bowl so all of us together is very tangy and tasty especially if you love fish sauce . My coworker enjoyed the sandwiches and said they were delicious. The staff was pretty amazing and was even up for taking a picture when I asked of the full kitchen . I think the vermicelli bowl was a lot of food for the money and I even had a little leftover - Bonus. The jasmine tea was a little sweet, but not bad on the sweet side… Super flavorful. I would order it all again !! Where the store is located is a little tricky as you can’t see it from one side of the building and you have to walk all the way around smoothie king to see it on the other side

Google
The food was excellent! It was so good I forgot to take the before pics. :-) Staff was friendly and welcoming. I had the garlic butter shrimp rice bowl and hubby got it with noodles. Perfecto!!! The vegetables were so fresh like we were on a farm. 10/10 We also tried the Bulgogi fries...mmmmmmhhhmmm yes Sir!

Google
This tucked away place is the best Vietnamese food I’ve ever had. Hands down. Everything is elevated, has an edge of deliciousness and slight edge of uniqueness I haven’t experienced in this cuisine for a long time, while remaining true to the cuisine. The coffee is incredible too. I drove all the way back home from a work break to finish both the sandwich and coffee!

Google
Vermicelli was excellent. The spicy sauce they include with the popcorn chicken was also really good. Staff's frienely. The interior is very bare, but its not a deal breaker. Will definitely be back to try more next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
I had the Shrimp Bowl and it was so delicious! The food was fresh and there were a tons of different flavors and it felt very healthy. The restaurant is really accessible from downtown hospital area so it is easy to stop by and pick up a to go order.

Yelp
I've been here twice and really enjoyed the food both times. I visited here most recently on yesterday and ordered the lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl that comes with a delicious sauce that you can pour over it. I also ordered the shrimp spring rolls that come with a tasty peanut sauce. The food is so flavorful. It's not a big place but there are tables and so we ate inside. We also managed to find street parking. The staff person who took my order at the counter was friendly. This is a place that I will likely come to again and again.

Kristen R.

Yelp
Food was fresh and tasted so good. I ordered over the phone and my order was ready when I arrive. Nice window view and the perfect stop for a quick bite to eat.

Emily V.

Yelp
I ordered take out from here via Uber eats. I tried the vermicelli bowl with pork and an egg roll as well as the KFC chicken bao. I expected the chicken to at least come covered with a sauce like traditional Korean fried chicken and it didn't which was a bummer. It was still delicious though. I liked my vermicelli as well. I would try it again and try some different things next time.

Yelp
The food here is bursting with Asian fusion flavor! Staff are wonderful and the service is very quick and fast. It's located in the heart of New Orleans downtown medical center so if your there, be sure to stop by! There is plenty of street parking. I tried the shrimp banh mi and the bulgolgi fries. Both were delicious! The shrimp was marinated with some sauce that reminds me of the bang bang shrimp from bonefish grill. The fries were a perfect blend of beef, sauces and fries. Can't wait to come back to try the other menu items!

Nini K.

Yelp
food is really good. i usually go when i'm peak hungry, so the sizes are a bit small, but delicious. Staff is friendly. For being in a bit of a weird area, it's nice inside!

Yelp
Solid lunch place, fresh ingredients, a refreshing alternative to the usual lunch fare. The place is clean, the people are very service oriented, you can tell they take pride in their work. I would definitely recommend it and will be going back.

Jey R.

Yelp
This place is on the side of a building so you've probably passed it and didn't even know it. We saw the sign go up behind our usual smoothie king and wondered what it was. When we realized it was bao we already knew we had to try them. We ordered the KFC bao and the bulgogi fries. Both were great choices. I can't wait to go back and try more things.

Yelp
Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 (quick) Experience: 10/10 (funny engaging staff) Environment: 10/10 (Wet wipes in bathroom!) Price: 9/10 This place is great. They are very quick with your order. They have a pretty good variety to choose from on the menu. Everything in the restaurant is clean. You can tell they take care of their kitchen. You can watch as they make your food. I love the baos. I love foods that are soft and chewy. The Banh Mi's are also some of the best in the city, made with nice crunchy Vietnamese style french bread. I am a fan of anything unique that i can't order anywhere else. They have a few unique drinks. Don't go there without trying Kumquat Jasmine Tea or Jalapeño Limeade. Although my preferred drink of choice there would be the Vietnamese coffee. It has ALOT of caffeine. My favorites: Pew Pew Shrimp Bao, C-Asian Street Corn, Garlic Butter Shrimp, Pulled Chicken Banh Mi, and the KFC Bao. Also, on a side note, this is probably the only restaurant I've ever seen, considerate enough to leave wet wipes in the bathroom! I don't know why, but this left a very good impression on me. Lol!

Yelp
I finally had a day where I could make to Bao Mi during a weekday and try them out. We got the beef bulgogi fries, an order of the bulgogi bao and an order of the KFC bao. The fries were delicious! The beef was cooked well and there was a nice spicy mayo on top of crunchy fries. The bao from the bulgogi bao are fried which adds a nice crunch, I definitely enjoyed those more than the KFC bao. Those had a slightly sweet flavor that I didn't care for. The jalapeño limeade has a nice sour and slightly spicy taste.

Alicia M.

Yelp
I ordered through Uber Eats and the packaging was super cute. It set the stage for what I believed would be a very flavorful meal. Well...everything else went downhill from the point. I tried the KFC baos and there was nothing KFC about the chicken. It seemed like a low quality cut of meat and it was flavorless. The bulgolgi beef baos were better, but still lacking flavor. That was unfortunate because they looked delicious. Overall, I wasn't impressed with my food and the baos here are super expensive compared to other tastier places.

Dave K.

Yelp
amazing beef bulgogi bao. the meat thinly sliced, with pickled carrots. perfectly cooked flash fried bao very thin crisp and then warm soft inside, not sure if the sauce was yum yum but is wasn't over powering and perfectly balanced. two for 10 bucks and served in a cute box.

Kayley B.

Yelp
Food- vermicelli salad and spring rolls are very good Ambience- I usually just do pick up. Service- They are not the friendliest, and the cashier always looks angry.

Lyna M.

Yelp
Great food options and delicious flavors in both items we got. Definitely will return when I visit Nola again. Friendly service as well. The jalapeños limeade was a hit! Everyone knows I love my spicy drinks so I will be making this at home lol.

Yelp
New restaurant near my work! We watched this place as it moved towards opening and cheered when the sign went up. And this week I finally remember to go over and get lunch! I ordered tofu bao (new on the menu this week) and shrimp spring rolls. Both were delicious. The bao was nice and spicy and I was worried about the texture of the bao and the tofu together but it was great. Plus my spring rolls were huge. I also tried the kumquat jasmine tea which was more like an Arnold Palmer to my surprise. Tasty but probably not my thing. Service was great and speedy. There are some seats for dining in, but we took our food to go. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Wow! Brand new Vietnamese fusion restaurant located downtown, just a few footsteps away from LSUHSC. The location is extremely convenient, and there is plenty of garage and street parking available. I stopped in today to check out the menu, but was told the soft opening is tomorrow. The staff are fantastic! They were so friendly and were happy to show me a menu. I've attached a photo, although I was told that they will be expanding the menu in the future. The current menu appears to offer something for everyone - whether you're a meat lover or vegetarian, I'm sure everyone in your crew will be able to find something that suits you. The interior is modern and super clean. I can't wait to update my review once I get to try the food, especially their Vietnamese Iced Coffee. Go out and give some support to this new, local business! UPDATE: 12/6/21 SHRIMP BANH MI AMAZING FRESH SPRING ROLL AMAZING FRIED SPRING ROLL AMAZING. 10/10

Paula D.

Yelp
Great service. The pew pew shrimp bao mi's are really good. And the provide complementary water in this heat.

Frank A.

Yelp
Only photo I was able to take was of the Bulgogi fries because I couldn't help but dive in mouth first. Bao Mi just opened up and it's definitely worth trying. The food shmacks and comes out fresh, hot and quick. I ordered the egg rolls, bulgogi fries, a pew pew shrimp banh mi and beef bulgogi banh mi. Everything hit, this place doesn't miss. Definitely will be eating here a lot especially since it's down the street from where I live. 10 out 10 recommend.

Julia P.

Yelp
Grabbed a bite from their pop-up at the Nola Nite Market. The bulgogi fries were a stand-out dish- the fries were light and crispy on the outside yet soft and fluffy on the outside. The sauce added a spicy little kick, and the tender, juicy beef brought the whole thing home. The Pork Belly bao was a much lighter treat in comparison: tender, glazed pork belly combatted with the light cabbage on top and the crunch of the peanuts. Will definitely be stopping into their location to sample more delicious bites from their menu.

Stephanie L.

Yelp
Literally the best. Will come back over and over again. Love this place. Yelp requiring 85 characters is silly lol. Love the corn.

Sierra M.

Yelp
I saw this restaurant were the 2023 WINNERs of the fried chicken festival so i knew i had to check them out. I never knew i worked right across the street from this small restaurant, so i decided to walk on over on my lunch break. Again this place isn't the biggest the have maybe two tables and 5 bar stools, but the people were friendly and the food is FRESHHHHH! Everything was seasoned to my liking and that spicy aioli sauce i could put on anything! The prices are decent for the serving size. I would recommend this place :)

Z A.

Yelp
Really good banh mi. The location isn't amazing (except for med students and people at the hospital), but that makes it feel like a hidden treat. Not much of a sit down place and the ambiance leaves much to be desired, but great for take out.

Amanda K.

Yelp
Bao Mi is the newest kid on the block in the medical center corridor, and I think its safe to say they will be able to hold their own when compared to other restaurants the area. I was lucky enough to get a bite to eat there at their soft opening on Thursday, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Although the original plan was to eat inside, our littlest kiddo was taking a nap... so to go it is! Matt ordered the Pew Pew Shrimp Banh Mi, Vietnamese Egg Rolls, Spring Rolls and a couple of Vietnamese Iced Coffees, which we enjoyed right outside of the restaurant thanks to the plentiful street parking! There's also a parking garage directly across the street, which will become a convenient necessity as this place gains popularity. Now this is important - they use DONG PHUONG bread y'all! So you know the Banh Mi is going to be good. Our Banh Mi was full of flavor and a bit of spice thanks to the Bang Bang sauce and fresh jalapeno slivers hidden under the large fried shrimp. The egg rolls were crispy and the filling was unique in that it combined ground pork AND ground shrimp. Although I've definitely never had this type of filling before, it was definitely tasty especially paired with the sweet chili sauce. The spring roll ingredients were super fresh, which is always evident in this type of dish - otherwise the exterior gets dry and too chewy. These were unique in that they included cucumber! I've never had a spring roll with cucumber, but it was actually a nice surprise! The cooling effect of the cucumber paired nicely with the spice from the sriracha in the peanut sauce, so I really enjoyed this combination. The iced coffees were perfect - not too bitter or sweet, and a great little kick of caffeine to get you through that afternoon slump. I would say their soft opening was undoubtedly a success. I definitely recommend giving these locals your business, while getting yourself some amazing food in the process!

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!!! I ate a late lunch here with one of my co workers and loved it! I got a beef dish and it was amazing. I am posting a pic bc I forgot the name. If you haven't been here visit asap. I'm

Yelp
Sensational. Authentic. Fresh. Incredible.. it's a really great spot with the best staff and service. Chill environment... it's a must must try!

Jadie T.

Yelp
Ever since that day I've been thinking a bao mi and these dishes! If you're looking for a quick bite to eat on your lunch break or on the way home, do yourself a favor and stop by! I was able to try a little bit of everything! Loved it all!! DELICIOUS! Can't wait to try their fried baos next!

David N.

Yelp
New place located on LSUHSC campus next to Smoothie King. Clean inside and well kept. Friendly staff. Called ahead for takeout. Packaged well. Got the daily special (Paneéd Pork Banh Mi) and Combo Spring Roll. Both were excellent. Fresh and tasty. Very convenient location to walk to while on campus. Highly recommend!

Jovonna D.

Yelp
My coworkers and I grabbed lunch from this nice spot. We decided to all get something different because we couldn't decide. Everything looked so good and the food did not disappoint. The Pew Pew Banh Mi is to die for--we all agreed!!! The shrimp were fried nicely, not hard and the flavors really paired well together. My favorite! The pulled pork was tender and flavorful. It came with a house BBQ sauce that complimented it well. Last, we tried two of the Lent specials: Garlic Butter Shrimp Banh Mi and Fried Catfish Banh Mi. The Catfish was fried golden brown, crispy like I like, seasoned well but the lemon aioli was a bit strong. The garlic shrimp made the bread a little soggy but was still edible. Not as tasty as the others we've tried but still a good one. *Not pictured: Bulgogi Fries. You want this, trust me. You will not be disappointed. Tender beef, cilantro, onions ON FRIES!! And, they give you plenty. It was large enough for 4 of us to share. We're addicted and have already been six times in the last two weeks. The staff are friendly and service was excellent, which makes for an even better experience.

Deanna H.

Yelp
The staff is VERY friendly. I don't even think I waited 10 minutes for my food. The fries were beautiful but it's a no from me. They were so nasty and I'm honestly disappointed because they look like they'd be bursting with flavor! The sauce was very bland and the fries were old I want to go back to try something else but I probably won't.

Hanan H.

Yelp
Def a 9/10! It's a little hard to find but def worth it when you taste the food there! I recommend getting a kfc Bao mi and a bulgogi Bao mi your first time so you can try both popular items. Also highly recommend the bulgogi fries!!!!! The food is pretty great and the staff are friendly. The only downside is the dining area. It's pretty small so don't go in with a big group!

Thao N.

Yelp
Fast service, flavorful baos, and convenient location. The bulgogi bao is my favorite! So much flavor well balanced with the pickled carrots. The baos are fried, which adds a whole new level of texture of deliciousness! It was also nice touch to have homemade halloween treats as a dessert option. Ordered the pork belly banh mi, bulgogi bao, and KFC bao. LOVED all of it. Don't miss out on this place. Thanks yall for being in such a great location for quick lunch.

Toni L.

Yelp
So I ALWAYS try to remind myself to take pictures before I eat but I ALWAYS FORGET bc the food smells so good & im always hungry when I'm picking up my food! This place is easily one of my favorites! I come at least once a week! I've tried a majority of everything & they've never disappointed me! My favorite are all the Bao options (of course) but spring rolls, noodle dishes, and banh mi's are bussssin

Lauren F.

Yelp
I am truly at a loss compared to what other are saying. I ordered take out via telephone. The prices are outrageous for what you get and the quality and taste were subpar. The garlic shrimp vermicelli: the mint leaves would have been a nice addition had they not been black. 1/3 of the box constituted a large container of fish sauce-small portion of the actual meal. The garlic shrimp sauce was pretty boring. Very little meat in the spring roll, but the grilled pork that was there was very good. I liked the addition of the lettuce leaf in it, as well. Given the plethora of other excellent Vietnamese restaurants in the area, I will not be retuning.

Brent B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Great peanut sauce and the pew pew shrimp sandwich was amazing, definitely will return!

T M.

Yelp
Visited this place a few times to try out a handful of items. The bulgogi fries. Not bad. Flavorful. A bit salty. Fries are crunchy and the sauce is a nice touch of flavor to the beef. The pork belly banh mi. The pork belly is tasty! And probably the best protein for their banh mi. It's fatty, meaty, and perfectly cooked. The pork belly bao. Similar to the banh mi. The KFC bao. The KFC is crispy, juicy, and meaty. Probably better than the pork belly version. Shrimp bao. The sauce is the star of this item. The shrimp is deep-fried and nicely battered. The bao itself is fluffy, and the protein is nicely proportioned to the bao breading. The vermicelli bowl (egg roll, pork skewer). Only $1 more than the pork skewer to add the egg roll and it is definitely worth it. The flavor of the egg roll is nicely balanced with the whole dish. Crisp until it soaks in the fish sauce. The pork is nicely seasoned and the bowl itself has a nice balance of fresh veggies and protein. Could be spicier. If there's an option to make their items spicier, that would be great. If there's an option to mix and match the bao then that would be great too. Or a sampler option. Overall the food is good. The price is a bit high for the items.

Santos C.

Yelp
Came twice and the food is amazing. The employees are extremely kind, I was missing an order of spring rolls and he ended up giving me a cold drink while I waited.

Michael M.

Yelp
Top notch! Loved everything. Super authentic and fresh packed with so much flavor. Can't wait to go back!

Danielle B.

Yelp
The food here was outstanding! Came during lunch and the staff was very friendly and service was quick. My family tried the bulgogi fries, pew pew shrimp bao, a bang mi, egg rolls, spring rolls and the popcorn chicken. Everything was hot , fresh and delicious!

Kenneth S.

Yelp
Food was AWESOME! First time that I've tried a Bahn Mi sandwich and it wont be my last. Customer service is also great which is a huge plus!
