Bao Mi is the newest kid on the block in the medical center corridor, and I think its safe to say they will be able to hold their own when compared to other restaurants the area.
I was lucky enough to get a bite to eat there at their soft opening on Thursday, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Although the original plan was to eat inside, our littlest kiddo was taking a nap... so to go it is! Matt ordered the Pew Pew Shrimp Banh Mi, Vietnamese Egg Rolls, Spring Rolls and a couple of Vietnamese Iced Coffees, which we enjoyed right outside of the restaurant thanks to the plentiful street parking! There's also a parking garage directly across the street, which will become a convenient necessity as this place gains popularity.
Now this is important - they use DONG PHUONG bread y'all! So you know the Banh Mi is going to be good. Our Banh Mi was full of flavor and a bit of spice thanks to the Bang Bang sauce and fresh jalapeno slivers hidden under the large fried shrimp. The egg rolls were crispy and the filling was unique in that it combined ground pork AND ground shrimp. Although I've definitely never had this type of filling before, it was definitely tasty especially paired with the sweet chili sauce. The spring roll ingredients were super fresh, which is always evident in this type of dish - otherwise the exterior gets dry and too chewy. These were unique in that they included cucumber! I've never had a spring roll with cucumber, but it was actually a nice surprise! The cooling effect of the cucumber paired nicely with the spice from the sriracha in the peanut sauce, so I really enjoyed this combination. The iced coffees were perfect - not too bitter or sweet, and a great little kick of caffeine to get you through that afternoon slump.
I would say their soft opening was undoubtedly a success. I definitely recommend giving these locals your business, while getting yourself some amazing food in the process!
