Shayona Cafe, Tucked Inside a Chino Hills Mandir, Is a Portal to India - Eater LA

"Nearly every visitor to the Chino Hills location makes a pass through the Shayona Cafe, the mandir’s on-site restaurant and grocery store. While the fluorescent-lit restaurant may not offer the same charm and grace as other parts of the mandir property, it is an important gathering point for worshippers, travelers, tourists, and locals. Spread across both a daily hot food selection and frozen foods and dry goods over in the grocery area, the cafe’s modest and mostly traditional offerings are a taste of home for many people of Indian descent, and a taste of India for those who have never been there." - Nandita Godbole

This is a self served eatery operated by the BAPS temple. We visited it on Memorial Day for lunch and the place was pretty crowded. The food here was mostly different than the dishes from your local Indian restaurants. Most items were unrecognizable to me (due to my own lack of knowledge). The Punjabi samosas were pretty good. All dishes were vegetarian (I believe) and spicy. Once paid, we ate at its outdoor dinning area with a nice cool California breeze.

Nice 👍🏼👍🏼 Great vegetarian without onion or garlic. Affordable because “we cant take money from god.”

We have been regular visitors of this cafe but the constant money minded expansion of this cafe has deteriorated the quality and ingredients quality over the time. Which directly reflects in taste and also after effects in the stomach. They started using more and more plastic for packing all Hot 🔥 Food They started putting more and more sugar in all sweets. Using palm and canola oils in all snack items. I hope they realise and correct this soon and start thinking for people' s health, not just their bank balance.

Went on a weekday and was disappointed with the limited menu, still gave a try to thali and chole bhature. Neither of the item tasted good. Below average food but the only good part it the money goes to the temple. So, won’t say wasted money there but nothing good about that taste.

Very good quality of food, fresh and delicious. Next to the temple visitors centre. Available Indian snacks and dine in food items. Excellent Thali available sometimes, which is a must try.

Great store to shop for a wide variety of Indian snacks. It’s all vegetarian store. They have all kinds of sweets like kaju katri, peda, pak, and many others made of milk, nuts, sugar and jaggery. They have savory snacks that are usually consumed during festivals or even during fast. They also have a cafe serving fresh food like samosa, dabeli, poori and sabji, dosa, thali and much more. Definitely visit this when you visit the temple which is a wonder of its own kind!

Good vegetarian food and deserts. All kinds of Indian snacks are available here. Loved their authentic vegetarian thali which is pretty simple yet very tasty. Decent number of tables are available to eat food after Darshan. Indian sweets and yummy deserts like Shri Kand are available here. The menu is however very limited though.

With the exception of Dahi Vada rest of the snacks and hot food from the Cafe is below standard. They can definitely get some tips from Jay Bharat and Surti Farsan

Yelp
This shop is pretty cool! There's a huge variety of Indian sweets and snacks. There are so many options! We got a couple items to try. There's also a hot foods area where they sell foods like samosas. There was a line to pay but it moved pretty quickly. There's lots of seating available inside and outside.

Yelp
Great cafe next to the BAPS temple. Gated area just tell the attendant you're visiting. Head right and park in designated areas. The cafe will be the small building with outdoor seating area. Lots of sweet and savory items to choose from. All made fresh in house. Hot prepared items, masala tea & samosas. On the weekends they have more prepared food items available. I luv papdi chips! This cafe has some of my favorite ones. Masala please! Luv that spice. It has a sort of egg yolk sort of flavor, crispy and light. It's hard to have just one. Thank you friend for introducing me.

Yelp
OMG absolutely come hungry! So many choices of hot food to ead,and it's attached to a mini market.so grab your goodies, go outside and enjoy the patio while you eat your delicious foods. Try a lil of everything! Again service and customer service is good. They will answer questions before you buy, but signage clearly stated what's inside each food item I can't wait to return!

Yelp
This review is about the sweet and snacks place. The store has lots of variety of it and so much cheaper than Bhanu or Punjab in Rosemead city. It has warm food like freshly made puri and lots of places to sit down and enjoy. There is also masala tea. See pics . Dec 28,2024

Yelp
Limited options when I was there. I heard normally there is a full menu at the cafeteria but the options they had when I was there were very limited and simple. I would like to try their regular menu if it has not been discontinued.

Yelp
This is actually a café and a store. The door to this area brings you into the store and the café is inside to the right. To get to this café & store, you need to go to BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills. It is a Hindu Temple. The Café is open daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Someone had said that the mango lassi from here was the best they ever had, so I wanted to try it for myself. While it wasn't the best I have ever had, it was good! It was very refreshing! I selected it & a Masala Chhas from the refrigerator. They are ready made & bottled drinks. We didn't care for the Masala Chhas, which is an Indian Spiced Buttermilk. I bought them from the café area. At the cashier's area, you can also buy a few snacks as you pay for your other purchases. It's quick and convenient to add on some Aloo Puffs, Samosas, or Patra. After we enjoyed walking around the temple grounds, we came back to the store. We shopped and bought some pre-packaged snacks to take home. The store is full of both sweet & savory snacks! If we go back, I might try their Thali. I love Thalis because you get a little bit of a bunch of dishes. They're served only Thursday-Sunday.

Yelp
We've ordered the combo plate from the cafe without knowing what's in it. Well, we finished everything no explanation is needed. We also bought some goodies called London chocolate and another one with dates and pistachio but I forgot the name. Those were delightful and not too sweet. I wish this location was close by because I'd eat there again if it were.

Yelp
Limited options - was too early for lunch but overall good snacks and one could do some shopping in their store there.

Yelp
I can't speak for the cafe food, but my partner and I did order the following prepackaged snacks: Milk Cake: solid milk cake. Not too sweet with a nice semi-chewy texture. Almond Cookie: Yumms. Also not too sweet, but have a very nice loud crunchy. I could probably finish the whole package in one sitting. Samosas: decent. Nothing that really stood out but the bread was very flaky and there was a decent amount of filling.

Yelp
Very rude staff in the entrance of the temple. They implemented a wristband system and I asked when it started the lady said it's been for a long while. Which is a lie! I explained I donate and come often so I knew she was lying. Done with this place

Yelp
So tasty! It looks like the cafe was under construction. They still have great food, but I don't think that it was their full menu.

Yelp
Good Gujrati freshly made food. Service n ambiance is ok. The most I like about this place is that food is fresh... not like typical restaurant, where all food items are premade and they are warmed up for serving.

Yelp
Very nice place on weekday. Lively peaceful setting. Walked around and enjoyed it. Nice cafeteria. Most things were not available in cafeteria on weekday since they were out of staff.

Yelp
If you are Diabetic and even if you are not , the food from this place will make you one. They put Sugar in every food; in sweets, understandable. They should stop calling their mix AFRICAN CHEVDO ; and name it Potato Mix instead. This place has turned into a PROFITEERING place instead of SEVA. The community must act and discourage UNHEALTHY practices; especially at a place of Worship and SEVA.
