Best Mezcal Bars in Austin | Eater Austin

"This small mezcal bar is found within downtown rooftop bar Arriba Abajo inside of the Thompson Austin hotel. The small ten-seat bar is dedicated to serving mezcal to the public , and also offers private mezcal tastings in a swanky space. There are indoor dine-in areas." - Clara Wang

My wife and I went here while visiting Austin. We chose this place because it was conveniently located near our hotel. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. I would highly recommend the carnitas enchiladas. The drinks were reasonably priced for Austin and they were very good. I think we may have been there on a slow night (summer Monday), but I could see this being a fun place to hang out when there were more people. It has a great outdoor area and a smaller indoor area near the bar.

Google
Driving from Round Rock just to check out this place, I was disappointed there was a large party reservation when we got there. The manager/bartender that greeted us went above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing experience regardless. I want to personally say thank you. You all were awesome and everything we drank was just as amazing! Very much appreciated!!! 10/10 Highly Recommend! Shout Out to our bartender, drinks were freaking exceptional!!!

Google
I am just beginning my adventure in tequila and Bar 508 was a fantastic start. The bartender was great and was able to provide some great recommendations. Tried a custom made drink by the bartender, an old fashioned with tequila, and a fantastic Smokey mezcal. Went back a 2nd night and Matt was my bartender. He was fantastic and made some great recommendations and was fun to talk with. Wish I lived in Austin to enjoy this place more often.

Google
Beer was cold but the tacos were terrible. They took 15 minutes to come out and when they did they were not even hot. The tortillas were straight out of a bag, and not heated. Any decent Taqueria would spend the time to warm up the tortillas, and the best places know to put the corn tortillas on an open flame for a little bit. On top of that way too much salt, and no salsas.

Google
Ian the bartender was fantastic. He was great, accommodating, and kind. He made a phenomenal non-alcoholic margarita. Great open-air atmosphere and the perfect spot for food and drinks before attending any live show in Austin.

Google
Loved this place. Staff was awesome and the drinks were really good! Highly recommended!!

Google
Funky/fun ambiance in an old restored house connected to Pelon's Tex-Mex with great outdoor patio and a few bar games! Ask Natalie the sweet bartender to tell you the story about her very creative cocktail pictured..or try the Mezcal twist on an Old Fashioned, super good!

Google
Good first experience. Love all these mezcal bars in Austin. All around cool vibe. Hope you get some food items soon. The wife and I will be back.

Yelp
Jae was amazing! He made sure to come by to ensure our night was going smoothly on drinks, food, etc. Super friendly, professional, and thoughtful. Parking - there's a public parking lot, dirt plot, right beside if you drive. Vegetarian options? YES. Love that this place has more veggie options than most. We will come back because of that. Their red wine was great!

Yelp
Don't get discouraged at first look. This place is a gem. Marvin is an amazing bartender and the food was delicious!!!! The meat is slow cooked for a day and everything is made with love. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Came here last weekend for a friend's birthday and really enjoyed the ambiance and service! Martin was our bartender and he was very attentive and friendly. He took some group photos of us too. We enjoyed our time here and then headed to Cheer Up Charlie's. I didn't have a drink so I can't comment on that, but everyone else in our group of 6 enjoyed their margaritas! Thank you, Martin!!!!!

Yelp
The only times I have been to Bar 508 Mezcalerita has been for SXSW events and yesterday for an Espolon event. From events for Vevo, Comedy Central and Espolon everytime this venue turns into such a unique space. The Vevo event being on my top 5 list of SXSW memories! (Saw Ludacris, Common, Nelly held my hand while he sang hehe) There are different levels to get different view points and indoor and outdoor seating. Some covered and some open air, but mostly covered by trees. If you are looking for a venue to plan your next event this is a very versatile spot to check out. This time around for the Espolon event we spent most of our time inside the little house at the bar with Jewels since Espolon surprisingly was not giving out complimentary beverages. Jewels was awesome and gave us a little history on the semi creepy hands hanging from the ceiling haha she said when the owner bought the place he found all left hands little arms in the attic. Why??? We do not know haha but hey it adds some quirky character and a good story lol

Yelp
Fabulous first-time mezcal experience! Ean (Ian) was fabulous at explaining the taste and how to start drinking it. I was very appreciative of his enthusiasm and patience.

Yelp
Cool mezcal bar just off the beaten path of DT by 6th St. They have a good collection of mezcal cocktails, the one with egg white in it was pretty good! I would at least go for this one first! Where it really shined were the tacos, tried all of them and they were each good in their own ways. Didn't have a bad taco in the whole bunch. The shrimp tacos were absolutely amazing, wish I had gotten more of these! Cool vibe being so close to 6th and also down the street from several music venues including Stubbs!
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
This bar has a lot of class. They serve Mezcal and tell stories about it. What I like about mezcal such as silencio is the smell ... and taste and feel.
google avatar

George K.

Yelp
Average bar. Did not try the food. Jojo was a very entertaining bartender. Definitely not cheap.
google avatar

Yelp
Cutest little bar right by the Holiday Inn as well as some of the other hotels in the area. It's a super low-key place for a late night snack (tacos), unique craft cocktails and very friendly bartender that love their craft!

Yelp
Coming to back to write a review since I came across my photos from when I was in Austin a few weeks ago. We thought it looked cool from outside, so we walked in. It felt kind of weird walking up because it looks like you're walking into someone's yard and into their house. I slowly opened the door just in case I was! It was a chilly week in Austin (sadly for us). Upon entry, we were greeted with warmth that felt like that from a fireplace. It was so cozy! The decor is all wood and tall chairs. Super chill vibe. The bartenders were really friendly and gave us some suggestions for our time in Austin, which turned out to be great advice! I don't recall which margarita I had, but it was spicy and delicious. My friends enjoyed their drinks as well. If I found myself back in Austin, I would definitely visit again. I would love to spend some time on that beautiful patio!

Yelp
Jojo took care of us! He put the spice in our spicy mezcal drink. The drinks were amazing and jojo was even better

Yelp
We showed up around 9pm on a Saturday. The atmosphere looked cool and the menu looked tasty for both drinks and food. We sat down at the bar and it took a while before the barkeep even acknowledged us. I could tell she was having a rough night so I wasn't worried about it. When we finally ordered, they were out of 4 out of the 8 cocktails on the menu. So I finally found a drink they had and when we got it, it was very disappointing. I wanted it to be good because I did not want to be a problem customer, but it was really bad for $14. We told her and she was nice and didn't make us pay for it. All in all, we won't be back but most likely just a bad night for the bar. The restaurant area looks much more promising.
google avatar

Chad W.

Yelp
Kelly the bartender to terrible.. Horrible attitude! Watched her cut off a group of 8 guys for no reason other than she was pissed about or something.. barb was empty and now I know why.. If you're walking by keep going

Yelp
We came during the day a few weeks ago as Bar 508 recently began serving coffee and breakfast and have been back every week since. Coffee is great and the breakfast tacos are the best we've had in Austin! The Red River breakfast taco is incredible. So glad we found found this spot, couldn't recommend it more!
google avatar

Yelp
Really rad Pina Colada ft. Mezcal. Very much enjoyed my time at this bar, post-Empire Ctrl. Room.

Melissa V.

Yelp
The vibe here is absolutely incredible!! I would come here every single day if Jojo was here!!! He was absolutely incredible; his energy, his recommendations, literally everything about him!!! First time here and will 100000% be coming back!

Yelp
Wow! What an experience. From the moment my group of 10+ walked in, Jake greeted us and was genuinely happy we were there. He then educated us on the menu & made great suggestions for each party member's taste preferences. Finally, Jake lit the place ON FIRE & by that I mean a very delicious drink. A one of a kind ending to a great trio in Austin.

Yelp

Yelp
Bar was still in soft opening phase - went on Sunday afternoon they had loud pop music from every speaker on every level of the patio. We had a group who wanted to actually talk to one another (7) so would have liked one quieter area esp as many patios were empty due to heat. Bar attendant (young woman) knew nothing about mezcals...why would she not be rained for a bar with over 30 mezcals?? Thankfully manager (Dan?? Not sure) knew his stuff. I hope it improves as it had potential and multi-level patio idea was cool as was location.
google avatar

Sonja B.

Yelp
Matt was awesome. He made the menu and threw it behind him when we asked about what he suggested. He made us multiple drinks and charged almost nothing. Awesome guy who knows his tequila. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Elon G.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I wandered into this bar on a Monday night after we decided it was too cold to see the Waller Creek light show. When we entered the bar we were greeted by Jake, a personable bartender with a fantastic beard. We were the only people in the bar but were soon accompanied by others. Jake is a passionate, energetic, and caring bartender that takes pride in his job. We told stories, were taught tricks, and even tried one of our new favorite drinks (the mescal daisy) which SHOULD BE ON THE MENU. It was so tasty and was like nothing I've ever had before. It's safe to say that this is one of our new favorite bars in town and we will be back, with hopes that our new favorite MESCAL DAISY is on the menu.

Yelp
A cool, chill bar along 8th and Red River. There's lots of areas to hang out at, including an expansive patio to chill out at. They serve cold beers, and lots of tequilas. The inside bar is the best place to get a drink, and belly up to the bar. The Lone Star tall boys are serves super cold, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Be sure to check out the washers game out on the east side of the bar. Parking is nearly impossible around here, but so is most of the Sixth Street area.
google avatar

Viviana G.

Yelp
We stopped in at the tequila bar before a concert. Don't worry they have beer which was my brothers question. They have small seating area out front but more patio seating outback. Staff was very friendly and helpful. My brother and I killed time playing one of their outdoor games. They have mixed drink cocktails and it's wooden and homey in the inside. I would recommend this spot to my tequila drinking friends.

Yelp
With intentions of grabbing a spicy margarita at Pelons, I found myself intrigued by the spacious patio and bar next door. This is a converted house similar to a Rainey street bar but in the middle of Red River next to the old Jamie's Village. The patio is shaded by a huge old oak tree and has cool lighting. The drink menu consists of margaritas, cocktails, beers, wine. Most intriguing was the margarita menu. I tried the spicy margarita with patron silver and citronage, fresh lime juice, grapefruit and muddled jalapenos with chili salt on the rim. It was pretty good but the spice was mild. I also had the house made sangria with Spanish red wine, brandy, orange liquor infused with fruit served on ice. The sangria was not too sweet and the perfect patio weather drink. I had a sip of the Cuernos Largos which is their strongest drink with a 2 drink max. The Cuernos was no joke, it was tasty, strooong and in true Austin fashion it was "burnt" orange. Some of the other drinks that looked enticing was the Texas sipper with St Germaine and Tito's vodka, the skinny mojito and the bloody Mary with black pepper infused vodka and zing zang. The drink menus are the same as Pelon's but they do not serve food at 508. However there is a food trailer called Zorro's serving up mini tacos on site. Their happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3pm-6pm and consists of $3 wells, $4 wine, $5 sangria/house margaritas.

Yelp
Yummy drinks awesome bartender Matt made us some special off the menu cocktails that were off the chain! I had a spicy drink and my bf had a spicy sweet one both amaze balls! The atmosphere is great with a cute little patio and fun decor inside. Friendly staff and patrons. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
Drinks are over priced. The bartender comes off as a snob. Twice I've been here and I just don't care for his energy. I asked for a Mexican martini with no olives/ olive juice. His response " so you want a margarita" I said if that's what it equates to... the "margarita" was terrible, no sweetener what so ever. My date had to drink it and I ordered something else. Some currant drink. I only go here before catching a show at Stubbs, don't think I'll be back anytime soon.

Yelp
We dropped in around 9 pm. The bar was near empty with the exception of the bartender Kayla and one patron. The bar is small but inviting. It's got a chill and relax atmosphere. Who perused the menu and decided on a Tres Leches cake and 2 tijuana bulldogs. We had good conversation with the patron and bartender. Very friendly staff. Easy going and relaxed. Service was friendly. Bar was clean. Cake was tasty. Drinks were awesome. Absolutely enjoyed my experience. Wish we could've stayed longer but work is inevitable. If you're in the area drop in. They have lots of tequila to chose from. I don't drink it but if you're a tequila drinker you might find something that interests you.

Yelp
REALLY great, really inventive drinks. The bar menu for food is pretty great too. The mezcal-topped Queso flammedo was really tasty and special. The cocktails are awesome. They have a good happy hour. Natalie, the bartender is awesome. She'll make you feel right at home!

Yelp
Loved Rich our bar tender! Set us up with some Kick ass Mezcal plus jalapeño muddled Reposado Margaritas! YUM!

Brian S.

Yelp
In town visiting and was walking by and decided to stop in because we liked the music they were playing. We were pleasantly surprised by the amazing service and attention we received. Although it is deemed a Tequila Bar, Kayla went above and beyond with her local hospitality. She also makes a darn tasty 'White Russian' 508 is off the beaten path but totally worth stopping in for a drink or two or three. Thanks Kayla for making us feel right at home!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Love this place. Ask the bartender to make you something off menu, something spicy and you will not regret it! Until next time, 508...
google avatar

Ryan G.

Yelp
Glad we stumbled upon this place! My colleagues and I checked out Bar 508 for happy hour recently since we were going to dinner at Stubbs later in the night and this was right across the street. At 5:15pm we had the place to ourselves, which was surprising given the great space and atmosphere. The bartender talked to us for quite a while and gave us the lowdown on all the drinks, and let us sample a couple of the specialty cocktails on tap. I was very pleased with both of the happy hour cocktails I tried! Normal, non-HH prices seemed pricey (+$10), so HH drinks were a steal.
google avatar

Karinna L.

Yelp
It has been difficult finding a bar that is welcoming and that makes one feel like at home. Bar 508 was exactly that. We stumbled upon this bar and the bartenders immediately greeted us and explained their menu. Brittany was phenomenal. My spouse ordered an old fashioned made with Mezcal which she had never had before. Mezcal is not for everyone but Brittany went above and beyond to switch her drink. She was very understanding and genuinely cared for our experience. I had their white sangria for my drink and ordered the papas tejanas which were both delicious. I highly recommend this place for those looking for a low-key place to enjoy good drinks, tapas, and friendly service!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Super rad spot in Austin with some of the nicest bartenders. Appreciated the drink menu options too. I'd suggest the Ox Dovetail or the Mezzlle cocktails and the Burrata y betabel for a quick snack.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
This place is super cool! Really great drinks and the food looked good and will be returning to try out the food. Cool ambiance and vibes! Service was good too. Cant remember the girls name but she made several fantastic recommendations and we loved everything we tried. Will be returning
google avatar

Juliana B.

Yelp
Matt makes some of the best drinks and we always have a fun time when we go there. The drinks are high quality and they'll tailor your drink to what you want and your individual flavor profiles. One of my favorite Austin spots!
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Dirty glasses and not the greatest selection of tequilas for a "tequila tasting bar". Rustic Texas space...great ambience for a tequila bar but they really need to offer cleaner glasses and a better selection of tequilas.
google avatar

Magdalena P.

Yelp
The bar is small and there was only one bartender so we waited about 15 minutes to get our drinks. This place is OK but nothing special. I would not recommend it.
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place so I'm going to forge ahead and give it 5 stars. I also feel like a total hypocrite for doing so. 508 is one of those trendy cocktail places that are driving out the seedy dive bars I love so much in Austin. 508 is one of the bars that is Dallas-ing my Austin. But I'll drink the Kool-Aid. Or in this case the spicy margarita. Oh yes. It is made with Patron silver and lots of citrus stuff and then has chili salt on the rim. It packs a bite and doesn't cost something ridiculous but is $8.50. You need one of these with a taco from the food trailer Zorro. Or maybe two of these. Other cocktails sport Mexican fare and were flying off the bar as fast as they were being made. They have a nice outdoor area too. I strongly recommend.

David G.

Yelp
I don't even use Yelp, but I created this account to get online and share how awesome the bar tenders are here. I've been there several times and have only ordered off the menu once, because I enjoy having Matt experiment with ingredients to make a unique drink every time. Also kudos for having drinks that are actually spicy! They're so hard to find in this city.
google avatar

Luis B.

Yelp
This is a small bar with a nice friendly staff. Margaritas hit the spot on that day where I felt that i was melting outside and needed a frosty alcoholic beverage. They have a taco truck outside that serves three days a week but unfortunately not on the day that I was there. Margaritas give me munchies so i wish they offered some salty treats at the bar. They had a decent selection of tequilas and a few tv's for entertainment. Music was good and their velvet room is a cool contrast to the wooden bar area.
google avatar

Chiqui B.

Yelp
I've always felt that instead of salt, margaritas should have Lucas on the rim. *Props if you know what Lucas is.* Lo and behold, 508 has made my vision happen. Yes! Their margaritas are tasty, and buzzlicious. The bartenders were trying to sell us on the idea that they're a Rainey Street-feel bar with a restaurant attached to it. Whatevz, just give me another 'rita.
google avatar

Suzanne V.

Yelp
Meh. Drinks were ok, but the bartenders sure seemed busy for the amount of people there (few). The manager decided to close at midnight so he could "go home early", which is good for my liver, bad for fun. But mad props to DJ Dolomike for his spins that night.
google avatar

Yelp
Found 508 - Tequila Bar via Yelp while visiting Austin on Cinco de Mayo.... Cute place with seating inside and out. There were two bar areas and a restaurant. At first take, it was clear they were short staffed but Shane and Kayla made the most of it. Had a lot of laughs with the bartenders and patrons too! Shane made an excellent Patron Margarita. Marissa took good care of us when we headed to the restaurant for dinner. Salsa was hot (so be warned) but it was yummy. As were our meals. I would definitely head back to 508 - Tequila Bar!
google avatar

Jacob L.

Yelp
Stubbs BBQ was super packed, so we came across the street at the recommendation of a fellow Socal friend. When you get a Mexican food recommendation from someone in Socal, take it! The food was quite tasty. I had the carnitas enchiladas, my friend had the carnitas tacos. I washed mine down with a Shiner while my buddy went for the Lone Star. A little more 'tex mex' than traditional mexican, but still quite yummy. Service was great, food was tasty, waitress was friendly, that's how all restaurants are supposed to work!
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
I'm Ok with spending some time and $ at this whimsical yet historic tequila shack. You can find everything your libated mind could want for, secluded dar rooms tucked out of the way, complete with mirrored walls and comfy sofa, giant JENGA and other simple human games, decent soundtrack to back it all up and ample patio spaces. I'd like to see some consistency in the volume of the outdoor speakers, every couple minutes the volume would jump to a level that produced cringe inducing distortion and confusion (to be fair I'm easily confused). I don't know if it was a technical problem of somebody kept bumping the knob... I don't mind getting twisted, just be careful about twisting my knobs...
google avatar

Tiger H.

Yelp
This bar is the spot for a pre + post show turn up. The drinks are great (especially the Moscow mule with lime). The bar tender is legit + cares about quality.
google avatar

Phillip H.

Yelp
Reviewing this place as a date spot. Roll the dice and try it. It's not romantic per say, but neither am I. Here's what's good though. Tequila and cocktails. Eclectic seating styles and areas. You can sit at the bar or find a quiet area. If things aren't going well your only 1 drink from saying "well I need to get going" and if it's going well your right in the thick of red river so you can say "let's split a don Julio 1942 and figure out where to go next."
google avatar

Yelp
What a lovely evening! The bar was fairly empty on a Tuesday night and we struck up a conversation with the bartender. Had a great time. We had a couple beers and some really good queso. The bar used to actually be the owner's home until they opened Pelon's next door and then turned the home into a bar some time later. Perfect, chill atmosphere. I will definitely be back. Good people!
