"Husband and wife duo Randy Goodman and Nancy Hunt opened the bistro in 2008 on Division Street, where it quickly became a community staple due to its rustic French menu, exciting European wine list, and friendly, neighborhood vibes. Sadly, Goodman passed away in 2018. A heartfelt newsletter sent out this weekend expressed gratitude towards the team, the community, and Goodman." - Alex Frane

Bar Avignon has a new chef. The food was amazing. I went during Portland dining week allowing me a chance to try a variety of dishes. Everything was savory. I did feel like I could've used more balance in my meal. That was also my decision in the choices I made when ordering. I ended up feeling a bit weighed down after it was all over. Great ambience and strategically placed seating. It has a lot of seats but you don't feel cramped.

The ambiance is lovely! However, we struggled with the service. We made a reservation and everyone before and after us was seated. We were finally seated at the bar just while we waited for a table. 30 minutes later... had to go remind the hostess we were waiting for a table. We ordered falafel but it was quite dry.

Lovely spot with French cuisine. A very intimate location. Great happy hour. The mussels are sooo good! A great wine selection

I joined my sister and brother-in-law for our weekly dinner and we chose Bar Avignon for they had not been and it was ages since my last visit. We had an amazing dinner with attentive and knowledgeable service, outstanding food and warm welcoming ambiance. If you have never been, go. If it has been awhile, go back. The food and service should rank at the top of any list, too often long standing restaurants fall out of the limelight... This is one that stands the test of time.

Very cute restaurant- with a lovely array of twinkly stars hung from the ceiling. Definitely make a reservation if you’re planning to go on the weekend- the host had to turn away at least 6 groups while we were there! I’m a bit disappointed that the menu wasn’t as broad, innovative, or inclusive as I expected: not a lot of vegetable dishes or vegan options. We had the sunchoke soup, duck fat fingerling potatoes, and mushroom risotto which were excellent but not anything to write home about. However I particularly loved the Avignon Lemon Drop- the whole glass was sugared, not just the rim! I would recommend just dropping in for a drink at the bar.

Really well informed staff, providing detailed information for ordering. Food menu is simple, but perfectly designed to go with drinks. A lovely place to relax with friends.

Food and drinks were excellent. Service was friendly but a bit slow.

This place is amazing! The wine selection is outstanding and the food is wonderful. The creme brulee was a bit too sweet and didn't have the right texture, and the bread was good but not great. However, everything else was perfect! Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and just the right amount of attentive. I also really love the decor with those sparkling metal stars hanging from the ceiling. As they move they reflect the light along the edges and really stand out. Wonderful atmosphere for dates or good times with friends.
